    Unpacking Household Engel Curves

    No full text
Acknowledging that decision making does not happen at the household but at the individual level, can household Engel curves be safely estimated based solely on household level data? Answering this question implies to consider the intrahousehold Engel curves (IECs) and to assess how estimates of such IECs relate to standard household Engel curves estimates. Aggregating the IECs to household level reveals confounding factors in standard household Engel curves, including intra-household inequality. A unique data set for Senegal is used to estimate IECs. Large discrepancies are found between the standard estimates of Engel curves and the consistently aggregated IECs. The main source of the discrepancy is a household fixed effect on intra-household spending behavior, which is only partially offset by differences in intra-household inequality. Results suggest that income elasticity of food consumption might be overestimated by as much as 43% by the standard household Engel curve estimation

Physical activity mediates age differences in cognition among Tsimane forager-horticulturalists

National audienceBackground: The Tsimane and Moseten of the Bolivian Amazon are highly physically active and exhibit low rates of cognitive impairment and brain atrophy. Methods: We use structural equation modelling to examine how their physical activity levels mediate the relationship between (1) age and cognition, and (2) age and cognition via brain volume (BV). Results: Tsimane males (n = 305, mean +/- SD age = 59.94 +/- 9.68) and Tsimane females (n = 265, mean +/- SD age = 59.28 +/- 9.79) exhibit significantly higher levels of physical activity than Moseten males (n = 106, mean +/- SD age = 58.15 +/- 9.93) and Moseten females (n = 96, mean +/- SD age = 56.63 +/- 9.69). Physical activity significantly mediates the relationship between age and cognition in Tsimane males (indirect effect estimate beta=0.01, P < .01) and Tsimane females (indirect effect estimate beta= -0.04, P = .01), but not in Moseten males or females. Conclusions: Among Tsimane males, who are more physically active than Tsimane females, the association between age and cognition via BV is significantly mediated by physical activity. Among Tsimane females, mediation occurs directly via physical activity, bypassing BV. These results suggest that mechanisms of cognitive differences across ages differ by sex and population. Studying the relationship between brain atrophy and lifestyle in nonindustrialized populations elucidates biological and environmental correlates of brain health

fabryka. A web application for easily analysing & exploring the fabric of archaeological assemblages

    No full text
International audienceThis article presents fabryka 1.1, an open access R shiny web application dedicated to the fabric analysis of archaeological or geological assemblages. The fabric is a statistic made of the orientation and dip of elongated particles and archaeological objects. It provides information about the nature of the geological processes involved in the formation of the deposits and their impact on the preservation of the archaeological assemblages. This statistical analysis is not easily accessible to non-specialists and is particularly time-consuming, sometimes requiring the use of several software, some of which are chargeable. fabryka uses classical analytical procedures (Benn, rose, Schmidt and Woodcock diagrams and statistical tests on orientations) for analysing the fabrics of objects and includes a spatial method. New statistical methods and new ways of exploration are proposed in the application and in this present article. You can use fabryka by following this link https://marchaeologist.shinyapps.io/fabryka/ or by launching the application in Rstudio thanks to its script. The fabryka application files, made in R (R Core Team 2025) by using the R package shiny (Chang et al. 2024), and this article, written in rmarkdown (Allaire et al. 2014; Xie, Allaire, and Grolemund 2018; Xie, Dervieux, and Riederer 2020), are both available online in a public github repository ( https://github.com/marchaeologist/fabryka/tree/main )
