    Effects of heat and pesticide stress on life history, physiology and the gut microbiome of two congeneric damselflies that differ in stressor tolerance

    The combined impact of toxicants and warming on organisms is getting increased attention in ecotoxicology, but is still hard to predict, especially with regard to heat waves. Recent studies suggested that the gut microbiome may provide mechanistic insights into the single and combined stressor effects on their host. We therefore investigated effects of sequential exposure to a heat spike and a pesticide on both the phenotype (life history and physiology) and the gut microbiome composition of damselfly larvae. We compared the fast-paced Ischnura pumilio, which is more tolerant to both stressors, with the slow-paced I. elegans, to obtain mechanistic insights into species-specific stressor effects. The two species differed in gut microbiome composition, potentially contributing to their pace-of-life differences. Intriguingly, there was a general resemblance between the stressor response patterns in the phenotype and in the gut microbiome, whereby both species responded broadly similar to the single and combined stressors. The heat spike negatively affected the life history of both species (increased mortality, reduced growth rate), which could be explained not only by shared negative effects on physiology (inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, increase of malondialdehyde), but also by shared effects on gut bacterial species' abundances. The pesticide only had negative effects (reduced growth rate, reduced net energy budget) in I. elegans. The pesticide generated shifts in the bacterial community composition (e.g. increased abundance of Sphaerotilus and Enterobacteriaceae in the gut microbiome of I. pumilio), which potentially contributed to the relatively higher pesticide tolerance of I. pumilio. Moreover, in line with the response patterns in the host phenotype, the effects of the heat spike and the pesticide on the gut microbiome were mainly additive. By contrasting two species differing in stress tolerance, our results suggest that response patterns in the gut microbiome may improve our mechanistic understanding of single and combined stressor effects

    This dataset includes the original photographs used for the comparative table of cephalopod ink stains and various corroded metals' powders in the Figure to be published in: Morrone, Daniele. ‘Rusty, Suppurated, and Discharged like Sēpía Ink: Scientific Knowledge, Animal Lore, and Colour Classification in Plutarch’s De Sera Num. 26, 565b–d’. Early Science and Medicine 30, no. 1 (2025): 1–25. The 7 photographs are shared in their full resolution and without digital alterations, except for the one named "Whole sheet + colour chart, DarkTable corr.JPG". This photograph, also showing a colour chart as evidence for the stains' colours' fidelity, was edited using the software DarkTable to standardise the colours' appearence based on the included colour chart. Its corresponding original, unaltered photograph is included in the dataset as "Whole sheet + colour chart, Original.JPG". All photographs were taken in the laboratory of the “G. Ciamician” Department of Chemistry at the University of Bologna by Daniele Morrone and Giacomo Montanari, who also conducted the required experiments

    This dataset is developed for the CELSA research project 'Humour and Conflict in the Public Sphere: Communication styles, humour controversies and contested freedoms in contemporary Europe'. The project sets out to conduct an interdisciplinary analysis of the interrelatedness between digital humor and social conflict. The dataset contains data for 550 items of digitally mediated humor (e.g. online memes, cartoons, video's, posts) created in the context of specific cases of socio-political conflict in four European countries (i.e. Belgium, Belarus, Estonia and Poland). The dataset offers coding of linguistic markers such as genre, humor mechanisms and communication style as well as a mapping of the discourse which the humorous items spark on social media. Here, comments made as a reactions to the humor on social media platforms are coded for types of response (e.g. positive, negative, humorous, non-humorous) as well as the incidence of meta-comments (comments on comments) and other linguistic metrics for analysis (e.g. types of speech used in audience reactions). The data was coded indepentently by four researchers with a background in each respective country in 2023-2024. This dataset can be used, for example, to analyse audience reception of digitally mediated humor, or allow the (cross-national) analysis of the impact of different humoristic genres in digital public spheres

    Steam network simulation data

    This dataset contains observations of the simulation of an industrial steam network. The data was generated from a model created in the Modelica environment Dymola. The main components of the model were imported from the libraries ClaRa and TransiEnt. The primary purpose of this dataset is to fit models for energy flexibility controllers targeting the reduction of carbon emissions, energy costs, and steam blow-off. This data is generated by putting a PI controller in the control loop. It reads the pressure measurements at each steam header and operates the different steam generators and pressure reduction valves to track the nominal pressures of the plant. Multiple weeks' worth of data is provided, which affect the simulation via the electricity and natural gas prices, the carbon intensities of electricity and natural gas use, and the net steam consumption profiles at each steam header

The dataset consists of code, written in the computer algebra software package Magma, that provides a high-level implementation of this algorithm. The code can be ran by all parties holding a Magma license, but in fact it is simple enough to be run in the Magma Calculator (http://magma.maths.usyd.edu.au/calc/), which is freely accessible. The claims in the article do not depend on this implementation. It is rather the other way around: the code serves as an illustration, for testing purposes, of the algorithm described in the article

    PREMISES: Smart Meter Measurements

    The PREMISES Smart Meter Measurement dataset contains electrical consumption data, as well as water and gas consumption when available, for 3 households in Belgium. The measurements were obtained using the local P1-Port interface and the open software tool: https://github.com/ejpalacios/p1-reader-premises. Electricity measurements are sampled at 1-second intervals, while gas and water cumulative values are given every 5 minutes. Metadata on household composition and energy efficiency (EPC and E levels) are provided. Likewise, we include details on whether the house has on-site PV generation, electric vehicle charger, and heat pump.
