IMMEDIATE OVERDENTURE – AN ALTERNATIVE OPTION IN PREVENTIVE PROSTHODONTICS

    Get PDF
Extreme cases of dental neglect are often managed by short and convenient treatment procedures that are actually determined by economic factors rather than indicated treatment options. One such indication is for the use of an immediate overdenture that involves two conventionally different complete dentures, an immediate denture, and an overdenture of any one type. Basic principles in Prosthodontics stress on bone preservation at all levels. The most competent method of alveolar bone preservation is the preservation of teeth. This article in the form of a case report presents a case of extreme dental neglect that was successfully rehabilitated with an immediate denture that was supported in the maxillary arch by the roots after undergoing endodontic treatment

CANINE RETRACTION IN ORTHODONTICS: A REVIEW OF VARIOUS METHODS

    No full text
In orthodontic space closure procedure, retracting the canines separately in the first step and reducing the tendency of the maxillary molars to displace forward is known as separate canine retraction or ‘‘two-step’’ technique of retraction. Canine retraction mechanics is generally divided into sliding (frictional) mechanics and loop (frictionless) mechanics. Methods of canine retraction in sliding mechanics are; elastic modules with a ligature, elastomeric chains, closed coil springs and in loop mechanics, the methods are; PG canine retraction spring, Burstone T loop attraction spring, opus loop, mushroom loop, and rectangular loop. Extraoral methods include direct head gear retraction and other methods include rapid canine retraction through the distraction of periodontal ligament and retracting the canine with rare earth magnets. Other than fixed appliances, a removable appliance that is used for retracting canines is; U loop canine retractor, helical canine retractor, buccal canine retractor, palatal canine retractor, supported and self-supported canine retractors. Thus, depending upon the techniques employed, a number of procedures are used for the retraction of canine. The individual operator must choose the method of preference to treat the malocclusion which requires the desired movement of teeth with minimal time to produce an aesthetic and functional occlusion

THE EFFECT OF OBESITY MARKERS ON PEAK EXPIRATORY FLOW RATE IN YOUNG SAUDI ADULTS

    Get PDF
Background: Obesity is one of the major health issues worldwide and so is in Saudi Arabia. It has enormously contributed to the increase in the incidence of diabetes and cardiopulmonary problems. However, very few studies are available where the effects of obesity on pulmonary functions have been investigated in young healthy Saudis. The aim of this study was to examine the lung function in the form of Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) in healthy adults grouped into non-obese, pre-obese, and obese. Moreover, Study groups were analyzed for the PEFR changes in association with different obesity markers other than BMI. This was to identify the obesity markers that may have a better association with lung function impairment than Body mass index (BMI). Methods: Young healthy students ages 18-19 years were selected for this study. Their height, weight, waist & hip circumference, and PEFR were measured. On the basis of BMI, subjects were divided into non-obese18.5-24.9, pre-obese 25-29.9, and obese > 30. All the analyses were performed using Graphpad Prism version 4 Mac (Graphpad software). Results: Average values of all the morphometric parameters except height obtained from both pre-obese and obese subjects when compared with non-obese showed significantly higher values. Both the pre-obese and obese subjects showed a reduction in PEFR compared to the non-obese. However, this reduction was found significant only in obese subjects. Further, PEFR showed a significant negative correlation with BMI, Waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and body fat percentage. Conclusion: Obesity produces significant deterioration in the PEFR in young healthy subjects and this deterioration is found to have a significant negative correlation with all the different obesity markers. This study also reveals that about 50% of young students belong to either pre-obese or obese groups and this rising trend needs to be addressed

    CEREBROTENDINOUS XANTHOMATOSIS: HEARD OF IT?

    Get PDF
Cerebrotendinous Xanthomatosis (CTX) is a rare, autosomal recessive, lipid storage disorder, characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol and cholestanol, predominantly in the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, tendons, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The usual conundrum is an amalgam of the primary symptom, as mentioned above, along with features of cerebellar ataxia, juvenile cataract, and subcutaneous swellings over tendons. Mental retardation is a very striking and prominent feature in this syndrome. Prompt diagnosis is vital, as patients benefit from therapy with chenodeoxycholic acid and the progress of the disease can be halted prior to irreversible neurological dysfunction. This is our experience

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Curcuma longa Linn. on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induced retrograde amnesia and its nootropic activity in rats. Sixteen male Albino-Wistar rats randomized into control and test groups received methylcellulose (0.5%, 2ml/kg, p.o) and Curcuma longa Linn. (60 mg/kg, p.o) respectively for 7 days. Elevated plus maze (EPM) used to evaluate the effects of drugs in rats. Baseline Transfer Latency (TL) compared to TL before ECT for improvement in learning and memory. TL 24 hours after ECT compared to TL before ECT for protective effect on ECT induced retrograde amnesia. Compared to baseline, mean TL before ECT significantly decreased within the test (38.8±18.8 vs. 18.6±8seconds; p=0.038) and control groups (41.0±21.5 vs. 21.1±13.7seconds; p<0.033). There was no significant difference in TL between groups (p=0.674). After ECT administration, mean TL in control and test groups were 19.2±12.8 and 12.5±2.9seconds respectively. Compared to TL before ECT, the decrease in TL after ECT between the groups was not statistically significant (p=0.256). But within the group, the test group rats showed a trend towards attaining protection against ECT induced retrograde amnesia (p=0.07) as compared to the control group (p=0.272). Curcuma longa Linn. may be useful in attenuating ECT induced retrograde amnesia. Further dose-ranging preclinical studies are required to evaluate the efficacy of Curcuma in protecting against ECT induced cognitive dysfunction

AN UNUSUAL ASSOCIATION OF ACUTE HEPATITIS A

    Get PDF
Acute Hepatitis A is very common in children, particularly in developing countries. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with acute hepatitis. Rare presentations include cholestatic, with jaundice lasting 10 weeks or more, relapsing, with two or more bouts of acute HAV infection occurring over a 6- to 10-week period, and fulminant hepatic failure. Gall bladder abnormalities are fairly common in hepatitis A infection but cholecystitis is extremely rare. Although Acalculous cholecystitis carries a bad prognosis, hepatitis A associated cholecystitis resolves spontaneously and carries an excellent prognosis. We here present a case of Hepatitis A associated Acalculous cholecystitis. A review of the literature follows

STUDY OF VARIATION IN THE HIGH DIVISION OF SCIATIC NERVE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE

    Get PDF
The sciatic nerve which is a branch of sacral plexus divides into its terminal branches i. e. tibial and common peroneal in the posterior compartment of the thigh. But sometimes rarely it divides in pelvis and exit through pelvis by different routes. Because of this variant course, it bears varied relationships with the muscles of the gluteal region. The nerve may be compressed by muscles or vessels. This results in the Sciatica of nondiscogenic variety. So the aim of this study is to define the level of exit and division of the sciatic nerve

A STUDY OF SOCIAL PHOBIAS AMONG URBAN AND RURAL ADOLESCENT BOYS: WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO OBESITY

    Get PDF
The aim of the present study is to analyze the effect of obesity upon social phobias among urban and rural adolescent boys. For the present study, 200 obese adolescent boys (Av. age 15.25 yrs.) and 200 normal-weight adolescent boys (Av. age 15.12 yrs.) from various govt. and private schools of Chhattisgarh operational in rural and urban areas were selected to serve as a sample for the present study. The criteria for selection of subjects were based on WHO (2000) classification of body mass index (BMI) which BMI between 18.0-24.99 is considered to be normal weight while BMI >30 is considered to be obese. To assess social phobia or unrealistic fear of social activities, Jodhpur Multiphasic Personality Inventory prepared by Joshi and Malik (1981) was preferred. To conduct the study, a 2X2 factorial design was set up in which grades of BMI automatically have two levels i.e. normal and obese. Similarly, urban-rural belongingness also has two levels i.e. boys of urban and rural areas. 2X2 ANOVA results showed that obese adolescent boys had a significantly higher level of social phobia as compared to normal adolescent boys. Phobic personality disorder was not found to be significantly different in a group of urban and rural adolescent boys. The two-factor interaction effect of obesity and urban-rural belongingness upon phobic personality disorder i.e. social phobia among adolescent boys was not found to be statistically significant. It was concluded that obesity in adolescence may lead to unrealistic fear about social circumstances i.e. phobic personality disorder
