Predmatematičke vještine temeljne su vještine koje djeca razvijaju prije nego počnu formalno usvajati nastavne sadržaje matematike. Razvijena vizualno-prostorna percepcija, sposobnost planiranja i organiziranja prostornih i vremenskih odnosa, snalaženja u vremensko–prostornom sustavu, pohranjivanje i pamćenja brojčanih informacija, ovise između ostalog o načinu i intenzitetu poticanja predmatematičkih vještina u predškolskoj dobi djece.

The SUVAG Polyclinic Library is a specialized library within a scientific institution. It houses various collections, including a Reference Collection, a Doctoral and Master's Thesis Collection, a Periodical Collection, and a Verbotonal Collection. The Reference Collection contains a wide array of resources, such as general and subject-specific encyclopedias, lexicons, dictionaries, handbooks, and specialized materials like atlases, all in print form. In response to changes in access to such sources, the library has provided links to the most pertinent online resources on its website. The Doctoral and Master's Thesis Collection compiles the theses of SUVAG Polyclinic employees that have been defended at universities in the Republic of Croatia. Given that SUVAG Polyclinic is a scientific organization registered in the fields of biomedicine, humanities, and social sciences (specifically, speech and language therapy), these theses are predominantly defended at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Philosophy, and Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences. Notably, since 2021, SUVAG Polyclinic serves as the scientific and educational base of the University of Rijeka, allowing students to access the library materials and collections. The primary purpose of the Doctoral and Master's Thesis Collection is to gather, process, store, and ensure the availability of dissertations and scientific master's theses from the institution's employees. The Periodical Collection comprises a printed collection of older scientific journals, primarily in the fields of biomedicine, speech and language therapy, and phonetics, along with an electronic journal collection subscribed to by the Croatian academic and scientific community through the Ministry of Science and Education. The Verbotonal Collection holds significant value for the institution's history and ongoing work. It encompasses publications related to the verbotonal theory and method, established by Petar Guberina, the founder of SUVAG Polyclinic. SUVAG Polyclinic is a unique healthcare institution in Croatia and a global center for the development, interpretation, and dissemination of the verbotonal theory and its applications. The Verbotonal Collection includes monographs, conference proceedings, and project documentation published by the SUVAG Polyclinic concerning the verbotonal method, as well as scientific and professional journals issued by the institution and school magazines from the SUVAG Elementary School, providing insight into the work of verbotonal teachers and rehabilitators. Within the institution's DABAR system repository, there is a virtual collection housing all issues of the internal professional journal "Verbotonal Conversations," which was published from 1995 to 2004. Additionally, the SUVAG Polyclinic's repository includes scientific and professional papers from SUVAG scientists and experts, with the majority being related to the verbotonal method. Over time, the Verbotonal Collection has evolved into a hybrid collection encompassing all scientific and professional productions related to the verbotonal method. Furthermore, the institution publishes monographs closely tied to verbotonal theory and the verbotonal method. In today's context, electronic resources hold an increasingly vital role in the libraries of hospitals and healthcare institutions. The SUVAG Polyclinic Library combines both print and electronic information sources, procuring print materials from various sources while gaining access to e-resources for scientific and academic institutions in Croatia through the National and University Library. As a registered scientific organization, SUVAG Polyclinic has secured access to the most relevant international databases. By maintaining its collections, the SUVAG Polyclinic Library fulfills its primary role, supporting the professional, scientific, educational, and research activities of the institution's employees

Challenges in verbotonal hearing therapy of pediatric and adult cochlear implant users during the COVID-19 pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has caught the whole world by surprise, and there is almost no profession in which the repercussions of the pandemic and the so-called “new normal” have not been felt. The profession of speech and hearing therapy was exposed to challenges and conditions to which it had to adapt on the fly. Cochlear implant users depend on the process of fitting their sound processor which is done face to face as well as live aural therapy. Verbotonal hearing therapy is part of the verbotonal method of speech and hearing therapy that requires the patient to be actively involved and present in the same space with the therapist. During the lock down phase of the pandemic, SUVAG Polyclinic’s Center for Cochlear Implants selected an online space for its patients and transferred as much therapy online as it was possible. Discord was the platform used by the Center for Cochlear Implants. It is a well known social platform used for messaging, voice and video calls and for the exchange of media and files in private chats and servers, especially in the gaming community. It is completely free to use and the interface is very much user friendly so our patients haven’t had difficulties in setting up their profile. By using Discord we ensured rehabilitation continuity and gave our patients the best possible treatment during the ban of all non-urgent health care services. After the pandemic a questionnaire was presented to our patients and to the parents of our younger patients to evaluate their satisfaction with the service our Center provided. The outcome was a high satisfaction rate among our patients with the provided service. Many of the patients are not residents of Zagreb which made them concerned how are they going to participate in therapy due to the closed borders between counties. This online platform made it possible. Given the results of our survey and experience with online based hearing therapy it is safe to say that a fortunate outcome of the pandemic was tele-therapy that became a part of our daily practice. That being said, it is important to note that no amount of tele-therapy will ever provide the result face to face therapy provides

Improving rhetorical skills by using the Verbotonal method

For more than 60 years, the Polyclinic for the Rehabilitation of Listening and Speech SUVAG in Zagreb has been developing and administering diagnostic and rehabilitation methods and procedures primarily for the hearing impairment and speech and language disorders, but at the same time implementing contemporary teaching methods in the field of foreign language learning as well as development of communication skills. The multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to each patient/learner is deeply rooted in the concept of the Verbotonal system, the original scientific theory in the field of speech communication of the academician and founder of SUVAG, Petar Guberina, and comprises knowledge of general linguistic theory, audiology and neuropsychological theory of auditory perception. The Verbotonal method, derived from the application of the Verbotonal system, brings together experts from various professional and scientific fields (medical, social, humanistic, artistic, technical) united in a common area of interest: speech communication. "The program for improving rhetorical skills using the Verbotonal method" was based on the interdisciplinary approach, respecting the basic theories of the Verbotonal method, part of which are individual students’ needs. Teaching units are designed in such a way that it enables students with speech and language difficulties to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and expression skills. These units include: the importance of communication in personal and professional development, the history of rhetorics, public speaking skills and argumentation, stage speech, phonetic rhythms and dramatization. Rhetorical skills enable participants to effectively express their thoughts, ideas, creative potentials, and to transfer knowledge and experience gained in various fields of activity to others in the most effective way. Working on rhetorical skills is necessary, not only to achieve the usual given academic achievements, but also to achieve competencies that will make them competitive in the labor market in the future. We believe that the program provides an opportunity to effectively develop rhetorical skills in people who find it more challenging due to speech difficulties than the rest of the population

The association between naming difficulties, aphasia severity and demographic variables in nonfluent post-stroke aphasia

    No full text
Background: Naming difficulties are present in all people with aphasia (PwA), regardless of the type and severity of aphasia. Several studies have reported a significant association between naming difficulties and aphasia severity (Saber-Moghadam et al., 2022). However, results linking naming difficulties and aphasia severity to demographic variables are contradictory (Johnson et al., 2019). This study aimed to determine the association between naming, aphasia severity, and demographic variables. Methods: 30 PwA who suffered a left ischemic stroke and non-fluent aphasia were included in this study. There were 20 male and 10 female participants between the ages of 23 and 88 years and they were examined in the period from 1 to 72 months post-stroke. The entire battery of the Croatian version of the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT-HR, Swinburn et al., 2021), was administered to all subjects. Data on the severity of aphasia based on the total score on the Language Battery and performance on the Naming subtest were extracted. Using nonparametric Spearman’s Rho coefficient, the correlations between CAT-HR total score, naming, and demographic variables were analysed. Results: The results showed that naming is highly correlated with aphasia severity, but there was no association of these two variables with age and time post-stroke. Conclusion: Based on the strong correlation between naming and the severity of aphasia, as well as the lack of association with demographic variables, it seems that the naming abilities of people with non-fluent aphasia are more dependent on stroke related variables and overall aphasia severity than on demographic variables

Besides causing serious threats to people’s physical health and lives, pandemics can lead to psychological distress. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and mental health among adults in Croatia and its association with sociodemographic factors, perceptions of pandemic, locus of control, coping with stress and perceived social support. A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted using a snowball sampling technique. The online survey collected information on sociodemographics, chronic health conditions, self-isolation measure, perception of COVID-19, mental health status, locus of control, coping with stress and perception of social support. Mental health status was assessed by the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). A total of 1482 participants (252 males and 1230 females) completed the study. The mean age of the participants was 33.3 ± 12.2 years, 43 % of the participants had elevated levels of anxiety and 18 % suffered from severe and extremely severe anxiety, 33 % had elevated levels of depression and 12 % suffered from severe and extremely severe depression, and 55 % had elevated levels of stress with 13 % suffering from severe and extremely severe stress. The strongest predictors of mental health symptoms were coping with stress, locus of control, and perceived social support. These results highlight the necessity of implementing psychological interventions during the pandemic to improve the mental health of the adults and vulnerable groups in particular that should include identified factors associated with better mental health status such as coping with stress focused on problem, social diversion and social support

The therapy dog – Support in the educational setting and mental health of children with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic

Unatrag dva desetljeća sve više raste interes za korištenje terapijskih pasa u obrazovnom okruženju, posebice u radu s djecom s teškoćama u razvoju (Brelsford i sur., 2017).
