In order to reassess the influence of Le Corbusier on my own architectural and academic education, my final project as a student is addressed in the face of nine works of outstanding masters and architects of the last century who were my referents. This essay is mainly grounded on the project teaching approach carried out in Rosario’s School of Architecture from 1956 to 1959. This critical and analytical interpretation enables to recognize the diversity of both visible and hidden influences exerted by the above-mentioned works on my final project. It also helps to reveal the comprehensiveness and deepness of the role that Le Corbusier played in the evolution of the architectural production and thinking throughout that period.
We have been taught and we have learned how to draw a croissant, how to measure it and how to lay it out. We could carry out the blueprints for building a set number of croissants. But, where does the taste fit in this process? How do we represent it? And, if the taste is missing, does architecture exist? It seems that we need other means to represent (and reflect upon!) what we cannot see and measure. Which is the relationship between drawing and text in architecture? We are dealing with not only representation but also project. Do drawings and words suffice to express everything that matters in a project? The architectural discipline regards drawing as one of the most important tools in spite of the fact that it is bisected by textual and material dimensions. Therefore, an exclusively graphic perspective implies a meaningless reductionism. The aim of this paper is to introduce the intersections lying between word and line as constitutive features of the project genesis considering that both of them should be present in order to attain mutual effectiveness.
This conversation has been held in Rosario’s Tenth Congress of Students of Architecture (CREA). It aims to blur the boundaries between architectural theory and practice linking the research topics addressed by Flores & Prats’ studio to the academic activities developed by the School of Architecture of Barcelona. Grounded on their works, their training process for students and their fruitful relationships with artists and actors of other disciplines, Flores and Prats pose their concern for both the present situation of architecture as a discipline and their peers’ professional formation. They reflect on the difficulties of issues related to building and city rehabilitation based on their own academic and project process experience. They deal with the creative stage as well as the previous historical and social assessment as necessary means to become aware of the actual context within which each project will be carried out.
Boris Ivelic is founding member and Director of the Master’s Program in Architecture with a Nautical and Maritime Major of the Architecture and Design School of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (EAD-PUCV). He lives in Ciudad Abierta where he has been working and studying for more than forty years along with other professors. EAD-PUCV is nowadays an international reference; it has played a key role in our Faculty as regards the incorporation of contents dealing with the link between architecture and landscaping as well as the development of practices 1:1. This interview contextualizes the relationship between our institutions and addresses the concept of maritime territory and its significance to understand both tangible and intangible dimensions of the Chilean territory. It also approaches the influence that this notion has exerted on EAD-PUCV undergraduate and postgraduate academic and scientific production.

Due to its inner material need, an architectural work is always controversial: each architectural form has its own specific aesthetic dimension through which the figurative relationships with the environment become the urban life fundamental. This polemos is rooted in the archaic essence of architecture; it deals with the representation of values, hopes and collective expectations of city inhabitants. It is through the tense interplay between the uniqueness of contemporary architecture and the aesthetic diversity of its products that representation is intended to shape the reasons and relations set among the invisible world of ideas, the architect productive subjectivity and the material complexity of architecture. The notion of representation as figurative construction is grounded on the definition of a new similarity concept. What the project imitates by means of the icon is a particular figurative and conceptual synthesis which sees architectural work as the highest tension point between the material world and the spiritual world, i.e., between the visible and the invisible. As project icon, Renato Rizzi’s work wound brings into play the fundamentals of the individual architectural work.
