Partisan Judges
This article argues that both Republicans and Democrats should look for judges who have intellectual humility and an ability to work with others—even as both parties also look for judges who are generally likely to advance positions favored by them. Part I explores the divergence between the public’s perception that the political views of judges matter and the insistence by most judges that they do not. Ample evidence supports the public’s view, and for judges to be trusted authorities, they should admit this truth. Part II suggests that even after recognizing that political views matter, both political parties (and others choosing judges) should look for judges with intellectual humility. Doing so would help to achieve procedural-justice goals, which are critical to public acceptance of court decisions and perceptions of court legitimacy. Doing so would also provide better substantive judicial decisions by more use of reflective thinking, more cooperative group decision-making, and better judicial administration
Analyzing the Role of Donald Trump as a Catalyst for the Surging European Far Right
Only about a quarter of the world population is currently living under a democracy, down from 54 percent in 2006 (Owens, 2023). In the United States, President Donald Trump’s sweeping executive actions and increasingly unchecked power have many worried about a possible deterioration in the sturdiness of American democracy in the coming years (Barrow, 2025). Meanwhile in Europe, far-right movements such as Germany’s Alternative for Deutschland and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in France have scored historic wins at the ballot box (Green, 2024).
The parallel rise of authoritarianism in so many different nations suggest a potential connection between these far-right movements. Previous literature has posited that nearby countries caving in to authoritarianism could cause others to do the same (O’Sullivan, 1996). This recent far-right wave could be the result of something very similar. In the United States, this began in 2016 with Trump’s first electoral triumph on an anti-establishment, populist platform that aimed to “Make America Great Again” with policies such as tax cuts and immigration restrictions. Europe’s far-right turn less than a decade later closely mirrors the playbook of the American right. This presents the possibility of the United States as a sort of patient zero for the subsequent rise of far-right populism in Europe, with like-minded sentiments traversing the Atlantic Ocean and leading to a rapid decline in western democracy accelerated by the digital age.
This research will test two hypotheses on the causes of the recent far-right wave in Europe. The first posits that Europe’s far right surge is merely a symptom of the global economic slump coming out of the pandemic. The second suggests that the European far right’s rise is an example of policy diffusion from the United States, with politicians adopting the tenets of “Trumpism” to generate electoral success. The first hypothesis will be tested using a variety of socioeconomic metrics from the IMF and other international organizations as well as tracking electoral support of far-right parties over the last decade, while the second will be examined via a rhetorical analysis of multiple speeches from far-right leaders through the lens of the Narrative Policy Framework (Jones et al., 2022)
The Prevalence of Cytauxzoon felis in Southern United States
Cytauxzoonosis, caused by transmission from a tick infected with the pathogen Cytauxzoon felis, is considered an emerging tick-borne disease in domestic felines. While not as fatal in other vertebrates such as the reservoir host Lynx rufus (bobcat), in domestic cats, infection is fatal nearly 100% of the time. This study sought to screen ticks pulled from felines for the pathogen across three states in an area identified as a hotspot. Out of 80 ticks screened, 12 tested positive for the pathogen. The positive population of ticks came from 3 neighboring counties in Southern Missouri: Jasper, McDonald, and Newton. McDonald County yielded the highest percent prevalence of 64%. The results of this study yielded a distribution map displaying positive tick specimens across Southwestern Missouri to aid in the research for a competent vaccine
Exploring User Sentiment on Social Issues via Neural Network Transfer Learning in Digital Communities
Understanding public sentiment on social issues is crucial for gauging the stance of the general population. Traditionally, surveys have been a common approach for this. However, to capture more candid opinions, social media provides a rich source of unadulterated opinions. By analyzing social media statements, we can gain insights into the perspectives of specific groups. More specifically, we will investigate the attitudes of the public into the relationship between hard work and success in the workplace.
Using a neural network trained on tweets from X, formerly known as Twitter, we can categorize each tweet as either pro-luck or pro-meritocracy. But will this neural network, trained on a particular set of tweets, accurately assess sentiment on slightly different topics from the same platform? This is where the concept of transfer learning comes into play. We have trained our model with certain topics, but we are interested in testing it against related, but different topics. Transfer learning is a useful technique in neural networks since it eliminates the need to train a neural network from the start, which could be both time consuming and costly. However, it\u27s crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of the transfer learning model to gauge its reliability
The Use and Implications of the Visual Presentation in the 2024 Presidential Debates
In this study, the two 2024 presidential debates were analyzed for a variety of different trends including: who was on screen, the different camera shots used, and camera movement. Looking specifically at who was on screen, coding counted the moderators, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Six different camera shot types were also analyzed including: wide-overview shot, split-screen format, single medium shot, two-shot head on, two-shot low camera angle, and two shot high-camera angle. Camera movement behaviors were: counterclockwise motion, clockwise motion, zoom-in, zoom-out, and no movement. Video formats of the 2024 CNN and ABC debates were run through Observer XT, a coding software, and were examined for the frequency and duration of each behavior. After that, all coding was exported and sorted for each behavior throughout both of the debates. Patterns and trends for each debate are also analyzed. Results share what shot type and movement type was used most frequently and took up the most time during each debate, as well as who spent the most time on screen
Development and Validation of a Computational Fluid Dynamics Model Using Wind Tunnel Experiments
A gas release computational fluid dynamics model was developed and validated using a previous wind tunnel experiment conducted by Daniel Williams. This simulation was modeled using CHEM software, and based on experimental conditions used in the University of Arkansas’ Chemical Hazard Research Center’s wind tunnel. These include ultra-low wind speeds, working in the atmospheric boundary layer, and using finite release durations with a neutrally buoyant gas. The simulation was developed in two phases: inflow and release. The inflow phase consisted of the development of the atmospheric boundary layer. The data from the simulation aligned well with the wind tunnel data. The release phase of the simulation consisted of the entirety of the tunnel and the gas release. The results from the simulation indicated a consistent leftward motion in all of the trials. Possible causes for this could be the small lateral range used for the simulation, periodic boundary conditions exacerbating meandering, and the small number of runs compared with previous data. Some future steps would be to continue to develop the release phase of the model further. Once developed, this model can be used to determine causes of cloud edge trends and predict experimental data before experiments are physically run. Additionally, because of how well the alignment was between the previous data and the simulation, the inflow phase can be used for other experiments with the same wind speed. However, it would also be worthwhile to compare Reynolds stress components for additional confirmation of dataset agreement
Who’s in control? Perceived stress and emotional regulation partially mediate the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on mental health and life satisfaction.
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur during the first 18 years of life and have a strong potential to negatively impact health and well-being in adulthood. The exploration of this connection is important because health and lifestyle behaviors have been linked to the leading causes of death in the United States. ACEs have been found to alter brain development and have been associated with mental health issues and lower life satisfaction, but information about the pathway between these connections is scarce. The present study aimed to investigate if inadequate emotional regulation and higher levels of perceived stress, stemming from ACEs, may explain the relationship between ACEs and mental health issues as well as the relationship between ACEs and lower life satisfaction. Evidence of partial mediation was found in that emotional regulation and perceived stress partially mediate the relationship between ACEs and mental health, and ACEs and life satisfaction
