Troublesome Medicine Man : Representations of the Sword Bearer Incident in Newspaper Coverage
Newspaper coverage of Native Americans during the nineteenth century had an “artistic bias,” or a tendency to emphasize action, danger, and treachery as a part of the “Indian formula.” This meant that vast amounts of journalistic zeal was spent on instances of conflict and tension between tribes, within tribes, between tribes and white settlers, or between tribes and the U.S. military, while times of peace and instances of cooperation received miniscule amounts of attention. This was largely motivated by a desire to justify American western expansion and the need to “civilize” Native groups. This “Indian formula” was also applied in the coverage of the Sword Bearer Incident of 1887, a rebellion by a group of young Crow (or Apsáalooke) warriors led by Sword Bearer (or Wraps Up His Tail), on the Crow Reservation. Newspapers used their coverage of the Sword Bearer Incident to pursue their own agendas by using different approaches, criticizing governmental policy, reporting inaccurate information, and perpetuating negative biases and stereotypes about Native Americans
A LabVIEW-Based Open-Source Data Acquisition Program for Acoustic Emission Sensing
Acoustic emission sensing is a growing field of analysis and testing that benefits from its non-destructive nature, enabling operators to detect faults, the severity of impacts, the propagation of cracks, and much more without damaging the system being tested. However, the use of proprietary software to collect, analyze, and display data hinders the field, as access to this crucial information makes consistent and in-depth data analysis impossible. To this end, this paper details an open-source code made in the programming language LabVIEW for the express purpose of allowing the user to have full access to all data and fully customize the methods of data processing. A simple tapping test is conducted to demonstrate the different outcomes of data between an industry-standard data acquisition unit running a common software AEwin and a national instruments unit running this LabVIEW code
The Odds of War: Links Between Conflict and Service Member Health
With the recent uptick in global tension and warfare between states, it is increasingly important to understand the nature of different types of conflict and how they affect the most important resources any nation\u27s arsenal - the service member. Although there is a significant amount of raw data for casualties across all recent U.S. conflicts, there are remarkably few studies that examine the impact of specific conflict types directly on veteran disability levels. This paper uses recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau\u27s Community Population Survey (CPS) Veterans Supplement to examine three major conflict periods and their differing effects on U.S. service members\u27 health. Our findings indicate that disability incidence and severity are influenced to different extents by periods of conflict broadly and by combat in specific branches of service. The data also established that more combat-intensive periods have a stronger combat effect on disability measures compared to lower tempo conflicts or periods of peace. Additional findings related to service member race are also included and prompt questions for further research
Food Security in Mauritius
Located over 600 miles off the East coast of Madagascar, Mauritius is an island nation with a population of over 1.2 million people. In the summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to travel to Mauritius and conduct a representative food insecurity survey alongside other University of Arkansas and University of Mauritius students and professors. With more than 400 surveys in over 80 locations, we gathered data in every district on the primary island of Mauritius. The group used a survey based on the standard USDA question list and compiled the results to find that the population of Mauritius had a rate of food insecurity of ~48%. Beyond the surveys, I was able to have tremendous personal and professional growth throughout the trip
Building Neocolonial Foundations: The British Government and the Decolonization of the Gold Coast, 1948-1957
In this thesis, I examine the ways that the government of Great Britain attempted to create a pro-Western state in Ghana during the decolonization process, which spanned from the Accra Riots in 1948 to the finalization of independence in 1957, with Kwame Nkrumah’s election as president. Since Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain its independence, it provides the initial example illustrating how the British government during the decolonization process in sub-Saharan Africa tried to cultivate states that would align with their interests following independence. To achieve this goal, I will rely on primary sources from the British Foreign Office, Dominions Office, and the Commonwealth Office. Secondary sources will include historical analyses of Ghana’s independence to illustrate the role of the United Kingdom in exercising a form of neocolonial control in Ghana post-independence. An analysis of the evidence demonstrates that the British government sought a degree of control in Ghana in the years following independence. Furthermore, this work seeks to establish the United Kingdom’s trend of westernizing future independence processes for other British territories throughout Africa and elsewhere in its expansive empire. By examining the United Kingdom’s role in decolonizing the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence, it becomes clear that Britain attempted to reapply this approach to other decolonizing nations. This research does not seek to take an original position on either Ghanaian independence or its significance in African affairs. Rather, this work seeks to apply paradigms previously identified by historians to new regions. Previous historians’ work on evaluating the importance of Ghana’s independence will be used to illustrate the effect impact the new nation had on the rest of the continent. Engaging with this scholarship is important since it further highlights the pro-Western positions that former British territories in West Africa assumed following independence
Examination of Language Sample Analysis in Children Who Are D/hh Using CLAN
Hearing is the building block of developing receptive and expressive oral language skills used to effectively communicate. Children who experience hearing loss typically experience delays in phonological, morphological, semantic, and even pragmatic development. Understanding the specific language challenges faced by deaf and hard of hearing (D/hh) young preschool-age children is crucial for developing targeted intervention strategies aimed at optimizing their language development. This research aims to analyze the nuanced aspects of phonological, morphological, semantic, and pragmatic language development among D/hh children, shedding light on areas that may require specialized support. The preliminary research will inform best practices in language assessment for children who are D/hh. By observing and evaluating the language skills of D/hh children within the Head Start program who have a hearing loss. Data will be gathered using Computerized Language Analysis (CLAN) software to analyze language samples. The utilization of CLAN software enables the examination and quantification of language samples, allowing for a thorough exploration of the linguistic abilities and challenges faced by D/hh children in real-world settings. Conducting an in-depth analysis of language samples will increase our ability to discern and gain deeper insights into the specific language skills for children who are D/hh
