GROWTH AND YIELD OF BABY CORN AS INFLUENCED BY NITROGEN FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT

NSECT PESTS OF LETTUCE AND THEIR BIORATIONAL MANAGEMENT

ENTOMOLOGYThe experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural
University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from 10 November, 2019 to 20 February, 2020
to record the insect pests of lettuce and to evaluate their biorational management practices. The
experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications.
There were six treatments viz.; T

= Abamectin @ 1.0 ml/L of water, T

= Bacillus thuringiensis
and abamectin @ 1.0 ml/L of water, T

= Spinosad @ 0.5 ml/L of water, T

were used at 7 day interval. Flea beetle (Monolepta signata Olivier), Tobacco caterpillar
(Spdoptera litura Fabricius), Aphid (Lipaphis erysimi Kaltenbach), Jute hairy caterpillar
(Spilosoma obliqua Walker), Grasshopper (Oxya velox Fabricius) and Red pumpkin beetle
(Raphidopalpa foveicollis Lucas) were recorded. The lowest percent of leaf infestation (10.70,
4.67, 4.76, 5.07, 5.03 and 8.74% respectively) of Flea beetle, Tobacco caterpillar, Aphid, Jute
hairy caterpillar, Grasshopper and Red pumpkin beetle were observed in T
3
(Spinosad 45SC)
treatments as against the highest (26.93, 18.81, 18.22, 37.67, 24.70 and 26.93%) was observed in

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT NITROGEN DOSES AND VARIOUS IRRIGATION LEVELS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUSTARD

FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF ROSE CULTIVATION IN KALIGANJ UPAZILA OF JHENAIDAH DISTRICT

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSThis study was conveyed to financial profitability and resource use efficiency
measurement of rose cultivation in Kaligonj upazila of Jhenaidah district. In this study,
a total of 60 farmers were selected as sample and a structured questionnaire was used
to collect data in the period of January-February, 2021. In this study, Cobb-Douglas
production function was used to analysis factor affecting of rose production. From this
study, it was calculated that the average per hectare total cost for rose production was
Tk. 628728 as well as variable cost and fixed cost of rose production per hectare was
TK.483128 (76.84%) and TK.145600 (23.16%) respectively. Additionally, per hectare
total gross return of rose production was estimated Tk.1246712. The net return per
hectare from rose production was Tk. 617984. Moreover, gross margin of rose
production was TK. 763584. Furthermore, Benefit Cost Ratio of rose production was
1.98 on full cost basis which indicates that the rose production was profitable venture
in the study area. The result also revealed that land preparation cost, seedling cost, MoP
cost and insecticide cost had positive and significant effect on gross return of rose
production whereas manure cost and TSP cost had negative but significant effect on
gross return of rose production. Additionally, the expense on human labor, manure,
TSP and irrigation were over-utilization and expense on land preparation, seedling,
Urea, MoP and insecticide were under-utilization in rose production. The present study
identified some problems faced by the farmers. Lack of technical knowledge, nonavailability
of HYV seedling and infestation of insects and diseases are main issues
observed in rose cultivation
GROWTH AND YIELD RESPONSE OF WHITE MAIZE (SAUWMOP T61G) TO DIFFERENT SPACING AND IRRIGATION FREQUENCIES IN RABI SEASON

DETERMINANTS OF PESTICIDE USE AND RISK PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOUR IN CAULIFLOWER PRODUCTION

AGRICULTURAL STATISTICSIncreasing demand for food and the diminishing agricultural land has resulted in
farmers putting great efforts to increase crop yields by using more fertilizer and
pesticides. Pesticide use in agricultural production has, however, produced undesirable
effects on human health and the environment. The study was conducted to examine the
determinants of pesticide use and risk protective behaviour in cauliflower production
in some selected areas of Bogura district in Bangladesh. Besides, attempt had given to
describe the socio-economic characteristics of the cauliflower farmers, to identify the
factors that significantly influence farmers use of pesticides in cauliflower production,
to compare the use of pesticides among cauliflower farmers and investigate the
comparison of risk protective behaviour among cauliflower farmers. Two upazilas
called Shibganj and Shahjahanpur under the Bogura districts was selected purposively
for the study on the basis of extensive cauliflower production. Simple sampling
procedure was used to select a sample of 99 respondents. Data were analyzed using
descriptive statistics, Multiple linear regression coefficients of contributing
determinants related to the determinants of pesticide use in cauliflower. Results
indicated that safety behaviors in pesticide use were inadequate, particularly in majority
of the farmers were overusing insecticides, fungicides and herbicide. The majority of
the farmers (54) did not use mask as a result of low education levels, high cost and low
availability. Due to their low levels of education, high costs, and lack of access, the
majority of farmers (58) did not know about pesticide toxicity. Findings from the
Multiple linear regression coefficients model estimation indicated that use of NPK and
Highest education level of family are significant at 5% level and plot size is significant
at 1% level and significantly influenced the amount of pesticide usage. In order to allow
correct pesticide usage for improved livelihoods and environmental protection, the
study advised the implementation of risk protective measure, safety training programs
and suitable extension services. In terms of public policy, developing and executing
targeted interventions aiming at the limit of detrimental consequences of excessive
pesticide use on human health and the environment
COPROLOGICAL INVESTIGATION FOR GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITIC INFESTATION IN GOATS IN GAZIPUR, BANGLADESH

MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN MEDICINEGastrointestinal parasitic (GIP) infestation is one of the major hindrances in goat
production in Bangladesh. The aim of the current study was to look at the prevalence
of GIP infection in goats in Gazipur district of Bangladesh. A total of 50 fecal
samples were taken from various areas of Gazipur District and were subjected to
routine coprological investigation (direct smear, flotation and sedimentation) to detect
the eggs of gastrointestinal parasites. The result showed an overall prevalence of 54%
GIP in goats in the study area. Individual parasites observed in the fecal samples were
Strongyles (38%), Fasciola sp. (24%), Strongyloides spp. (12%) and
Paramphistomum sp. (10%). Jamnapari goats were more prone to GIP infestation than
Black Bengal goats. Female goats (64%) demonstrated higher rate of GIP infestation.
Non-dewormed goats were significantly more susceptible to GIP infestation. Further
study with broader area and sample size with extensive epidemiological data along
with the risk factors will provide a clearer picture of GIP infestation status
MARKETING CHANNEL AND EFFICACY OF AMAN RICE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF CUMILLA DISTRICT

AGRICULTURAL STATISTICSAman rice is a popular variety of rice grown in Bangladesh, particularly in the Aman season (JuneNovember).
The
marketing
channel
efficacy
of
Aman
rice
in
Bangladesh
is
critical
for
the
success
of
farmers,
traders,
and
other
stakeholders
involved
in
the
rice
supply
chain.
The
purpose
of
this
thesis
is to evaluate the effectiveness of different marketing channels used to distribute and
promote Aman rice in selected areas of Cumilla districts.
Marketing channels for Aman rice include traditional channels such as wholesale markets,
retailers, and local vendors. The study adopts a survey research design, where data collected from
135 respondents, comprising of farmers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers in the study area.
This thesis examines the marketing channel efficacy of Aman rice in selected areas of Cumilla
district, utilizing General Formulas of Gross Marketing Margin, Marketing Cost, Net Margin, and
Shepherd's Formula for Efficacy Model. The research aims to identify the most effective marketing
channels for Aman rice and recommend strategies for enhancing their effectiveness.
The results reveal that there are four marketing channels for Aman rice in the study area, namely,
channel I (farmer to faria to consumer), channel II (farmer to bapari to consumer), channel III
(farmer to aratder to consumer), and channel IV (farmer to miller to consumer). Using the
composite index formula, the study finds that channel IV has the highest marketing effectiveness,
followed by channel III, channel II, and channel I.
The findings of such research can provide insights into the most effective marketing channels for
promoting and distributing Aman rice, as well as the potential for expanding market reach and
increasing sales through innovative marketing strategies.

YIELD GAP MINIMIZING STRATEGIES FOLLOWED BY TOMATO GROWERS OF BURICHANG UPAZILA UNDER CUMILLA DISTRICT

SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2019Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L) is one of the major vegetable crops cultivated in
Bangladesh, which plays a major role in supplementing the income of small and marginal
farmers of Burichang upazila under Cumilla district. The objectives of this study were to
describe the socio-economic profile of tomato growers; to determine the extent of tomato yield
gap minimizing strategies by the growers; to explore the contributing relationship between the
socio-economic profile of tomato growers with their yield gap minimizing strategies; and to
identify the causes of tomato yield gap. The study was conducted with randomly selected 101
tomato growers in one union of Burichang upazila under Cumilla district. A pre-tested
interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents during 22
February, 2021. Yield gap minimizing strategies of tomato cultivation was the dependent
variable and it was measured on the basis of a five (5) point rating scale with 15 strategies were
used. The majority (57.43%) of the tomato growers had medium tomato yield gap minimizing
strategies compared to 26.73% of them having high tomato yield gap minimizing strategies and
15.84% having low yield gap minimizing strategies. Among 11 selected characteristics of the
farmers 4 characteristics namely, yield gap of tomato cultivation, education, professional
training experience and farmers’ knowledge on tomato cultivation had significant contribution
to their tomato yield gap minimizing strategies. According to Causes Index (CI), “early
message of weather forecasting” ranked first followed by “inadequate extension service to
support tomato production”, “high cost of inputs (seed, fertilizer and pesticides)” and “pressure
from middleman to sell produces at lower price.” Education of the farmers had most significant
contributing factor on their practice of tomato yield gap minimizing strategies. So it can be
concluded that education increased knowledge and ability of farmers to understand and
response to advance agricultural practices which drove them to adopt advance strategies to
minimize tomato yield gap.
