DETERMINANTS OF SUSTAINABILITY OF HOMESTEAD GARDENING IN SALINITY AFFECTED COASTAL ZONE

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMSustainable homestead gardening provides economic profitability, social wellbeing and
environmental soundness. The objectives of this study were to describe the socioeconomic
characteristics of the coastal homestead gardeners, to measure the extent of sustainable homestead
gardening, and to determine the contributory factors of sustainable homestead gardening in salinity
affected coastal zone. Data were collected from 108 homestead gardeners of four villages under
Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat district, using a structured interview schedule. Multiple linear
regressions were applied to examine the contribution of the selected factors of the homestead
gardeners. 53.7 percent of the homestead gardeners belonged to medium sustainable category
followed by low sustainable category (26.9 percent) and high sustainable category (19.4 percent).
Around 76.3 percent (R² = 0.763) of the variation in the respondents’ sustainable homestead
gardening can be attributed to their level of education, family size, homestead garden size, annual
family income, organizational participation, contact with extension agent, knowledge in homestead
gardening system, access to ICTs, access to financial institutions, climate smart agricultural
practices and technologies. Multiple linear regression indicates that knowledge in homestead
gardening, access to ICTs, and organizational participation were significant contributing factors. It
can be concluded that improving knowledge and access to ICTs and organizational participation are
a key to achieving sustainable gardening in salinity affected coastal zone. DAE should invest in
increasing education of the gardeners towards the sustainability of homestead gardening in this
regard
SYSTEMS OF MUSTARD INTENSIFICATION AS INFLUENCED BY VARIETY AND SULPHUR

Dhaka to study the systems of mustard intensification as influenced by variety and
sulphur, during the period from October 2020 to February 2021 in Rabi season. The
experiment was consisted of two factors and followed by randomized complete block

SEMESTER: JULY-DECEMBER, 2021The present research was carried out at Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of
Biotechnology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 from the period
of January 2020 to September 2021 to evaluate the effect of different plant growth
regulators on in vitro callus induction, shoot regeneration and root formation for Tea.
The experiment was conducted at Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3
replications. Four levels of BA (1.00, 2.00, 3.00 and 4.00 mg/L) alone and in
combination with four levels of NAA (1.00, 2.00, 3.00 and 4.00mg/L) were used for
shoot induction. The treatment 2, 4-D was used for callus induction. Different
concentration of IBA (300, 400 and 500 mg/L) was used with different dipping time
for root induction of regenerated shoot in natural open condition. The highest
percentage (86.51%) of callus induction was observed in combined treatment of 2.00
mg/L BA + 1.50 mg/L 2, 4- D with minimum (2.12) weeks. Highest percentage
(84.39%) of shoot induction was recorded with 2.00 mg/L BA+ 2.00 mg/L NAA as
well as in minimum (32.43) days. Maximum number of shoot (1.42, 2.46 and 4.49)
and the highest length of shoot (1.41, 3.28 and 4.61) at 60, 90 and 120 DAI were
recorded from the treatment 2.00 mg/L BA + 2.00 mg/L NAA. The highest
percentage (75.32%) of root induction with minimum (6.02) weeks was recorded
when regenerated shoots were dipped in 500 mg/L IBA solution for 30 minutes. The
highest number of roots (4.20 and 7.80) and highest length of roots (3.31 and 5.80
cm) were recorded in 500 mg/L IBA concentration in 30 minutes dipping time. No
root induction was recorded in controlled treatment. The protocol developed from the
present study might be useful for large scale production of healthy, disease free
planting material for Tea
EFFECT OF FERTILIZERS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SWEET POTATO (Ipomoea batatas L.) AT FARMERS’ FIELD OF BOGRA IN BANGLADESH

not only for its high market demand but also its high nutritious value. Present study
was conducted to evaluate the effect of fertilizers on the yield of sweet potato at
farmer’s level in Bogura, Bangladesh. The experiment was carried out in Randomized

plant 27.33 and number of branches per plant 6.77 respectively) and in T
2
fertilizer
application, and V

treatment. The highest vine length, number of leaf and number
of branches per plant were shown during 100 days in V
4

2
treatment. The result
indicates that V
2

2
produced highest tuber length (16.67cm). The result also indicated
that V

SALINITY IMPACT ON SOIL PROPERTIES AND BRINJAL PRODUCTION IN COASTAL AREAS OF BAGERHAT AND PIROJPUR DISTRICTS CONSIDERING CHANGED CLIMATE

the major natural hazards hampering crop production in costal part of Bangladesh. This
study aimed to determine the salinity on physical and chemical properties of soil in
coastal areas (Bagerhat and Pirojpur district) of Bangladesh and also to observe the salt
tolerance of morphological, physiological and yield traits of brinjal genotypes. The
stability analysis of binjal genotypes was observe at different location of farmer’s field in
the coastal area. The study areas Electrical conductivity (EC) ranged from 7.35 to 1.13
dS/m and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) values ranged from 5.99 to 49.37 with the
highest salinity was in the month of May. Low concentrations of total nitrogen,
phosphorus, exchangeable calcium and magnesium and high level of exchangeable
potassium was found in the study area. In case of four different treatments germination
percentage was maximum rather than control ranged from 63.74 to 90.24 at T
(4 dS/m
NaCl), with an average of 80.63% in BARI Hybrid Begun 2. Effect of salinity was also
observed on plant height (cm), root, leaves, stem fresh weight and dry weight (g/plant),
number of leaves/plant, length and width of leaves (cm), days of first flowering, number
of cluster/plant, number of branches/ plant, number of fruits/plant, fruit diameter (cm),
individual fruit weight (g), weight of fruit/plant (Kg), Leaf Area Index (LAI) and
chlorophyll content. Leaf length significantly reduced irrespective of genotypes. Leaf
breadth at vegetative stage of eight brinjal genotypes recorded 18.95 cm at control
environment, while 15.56 cm at T
1
(4 dS/m), 12.77 cm at T
(8 dS/m) and 8.84 cm was
recorded at T

(12 dS/m), i.e.53.33% reduced leaf breadth from control environment. In
the reproductive stage maximum leaf area index (LAI) was recorded in F

CAPACITY OF THE SUB-ASSISTANT AGRICULTURE OFFICERS (SAAOs) OF GAZIPUR DISTRICT

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMThe current study was primarily intended to examine the capacity of the Sub Assistant Agriculture
Officers (SAAOs) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and to determine the
correlations between each of the SAAOs selected characteristics and their capacity. Age,
academic achievement, service length, job facilities, mass media contact, and farmers' problem
awareness were the selected characteristics of the SAAOs. All the five upazilas of Gazipur district
were chosen as the locale of the study and data were collected from 98 SAAOs, of those five
upazilas. The data were gathered by the researcher himself through personal contact with a wellstructured
interview schedule. The capacity of the SAAOs was assessed by their respective
supervisor (AEO) and three farmers from the relevant block of the concerned SAAOs. Finally,
capacity of a SAAO was finally measured by the average of supervisor and farmers’ rating.
Majority (56.1%) of the SAAOs had medium capacity and 33.7% and 10.2% had low and high
capacity. Thus, overwhelming majority (89.8%) of the SAAOs had low to medium capacity to
perform their duties. From spearman’s rank correlation, it was found that there were significant
correlation between service length, job facilities, mass media contact and farmers’ problem
awareness of the SAAOs with their capacity. From the findings, it may be concluded that SAAOs
having more service length, job facilities, mass media contact and farmers’ problem awareness
had more capacity to provide necessary agricultural advisory services to the farmers
EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SALT STRESS CONDITIONS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF BRINJAL (Solanum melongena)

crop plants. A pot experiment was conducted during November 2020 to March 2021 at
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 to evaluate
the effect of different salt stress levels on growth and yield of brinjal namely BARI
Begun 1, BARI Hybrid 2, EG 203. The three salinity levels (4 dS/m, 8dS/m, 12dS/m)
along with a control where only water was applied which were inclined by irrigation of
NaCl salt solution. The experiment was placed out following two factor Randomized
Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that BARI
Begun 1 gave the tallest (40.95cm) plant at control while it was 24.32 cm at 12 dS/m
salinity level. Like plant height all the other parameters i.e. no of leaves (13.74), leaf
length (15.6 cm), leaf breadth (6.7 cm), chlorophyll content (35.5) etc. were also
decreased with increasing of salinity level. Maximum number of fruits per plant was
obtained at control in BARI Hybrid 2 and decreased in higher salinity. Individual fruit
weight of BARI Hybrid 2 (127.67gm) was highest among the varieties. Yield per plant
was maximum in BARI Hybrid 2 (5.22 kg) obtained at control and minimum in EG 203
(2.16) under 12 dS/m salinity level. Yield contributing characters i.e. no of fruit/plant,
fruit diameter (cm), individual fruit weight (gm), yield/plant etc. were also decreased
with the increasing of salinity level. Therefore BARI Hybrid 2 performed best among
the selected varieties and can be added in the saline area of Bangladesh
EFFECT OF GLYPHOSATE HERBICIDE ON PHOSPHORUS AVAILABILITY AND SUBSEQUENT GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHEAT

SEMESTER: JAN-JUNE, 2021A field experiment was conducted in Grey Terrace soils under Madhupur Tract
Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ-28) during 2019-2020 to observe the effect of
glyphosate on wheat growth applied before crop establishment to the soil. The
experiment was tested by applying glyphosate 2 and 7 days before land
preparation. The soils under two different phosphorus doses (minimum
phosphorus and high dose of phosphorus) and three glyphosate doses (no
glyphosate, recommended dose of glyphosate and high dose of glyphosate).
Twelve treatments were studied in split-split plot design with three replications.
The growth and yield parameters of wheat, weed biomass and P concentration
were varied due to the plant back period, glyphosate and phosphorus doses
applied to the soil before crop establishment. When glyphosate applied 2 days
before, emergence, germination and plant growth were hampered in compared
to 7 days before application. Application of high glyphosate dose with high P
significantly reduce yield and yield contributing characters of wheat crops. The
phosphorus concentration in clay loam soil was also the highest recorded in the
high glyphosate combined with high P dose. When glyphosate was applied at
the recommended dose 7 days before land preparation, the yield and yield
contributing characters were not hampered compared with high dose of
glyphosate. The key result from the experiment was the interaction of plant
back period and high rate of glyphosate with high dose of P fertilizer, leading
to a negative effect on wheat phenotypic and yield characters in clay loam soil.
The interaction of recommended dose of glyphosate and phosphorus reduce the
weed biomass and increase the phosphorus availability in clay loam soil, and
thus reducing the total cost of production for wheat. However, most of the
effects were observed at the initial stage of crop growth

SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021The research aims to investigate the current supply chain, impact of post-harvest losses on
marketing margin and efficiency, and seasonal price variations of flower. The research was
based on both primary and secondary sources of information. About 95 respondents were
selected using simple random sampling from Jashore and Dhaka city to provide primary
data. Additionally, this study considered four different types of flowers, including roses,
marigolds, gladiolus, and tuberose. Gladiolus has the highest total cost per hectare and
marigold had the lowest. On the other hand, retailer had the highest estimated marketing
cost per hundred flowers and they added the most value. Additionally, gladiolus had the
highest marketing margin before and after the post-harvest loss, followed by rose, tuberose
and marigold. In Jashore district, the seasonal price indices for gladiolus were highest in
December and lowest in July. Furthermore, gladiolus had the highest seasonal price indices
in October and the lowest in August in Dhaka city. Based on the findings of this research,
it is recommended to maintain post-harvest losses properly specifically providing freezervans
for
