    ENHANCEMENT OF GERMINATION, SEEDLING GROWTH, WATER RELATION BEHAVIOR OF WHEAT THROUGH OSMO AND HYDRO PRIMING UNDER DROUGHT STRESS CONDITION

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYA laboratory experiment was carried out at the central laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Dhaka-1207 during the period from December 2019 to February 2020 to find out the effect of various Mannitol concentrations on the germination, seedling growth and water relation behavior of wheat under drought stress condition. This study consisted of two different experiments. Mannitol was used as priming agent and PEG (Polyethylene glycol) was used for inducing drought stress. Ethanol was used as surface sterilizer of wheat seeds. The data on different parameters were recorded for analysis the result of this experiment. For the first experiment four levels of mannitol such as 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% were used for osmopriming and water was used for hydropriming. Seeds primed with 2% mannitol gave the best results on studied parameters. Results revealed that the seed primed with 2% Mannitol for 9 hours showed the highest germination rate (98%), shoot length (162.3 mm), root length (183.3mm), shoot dry weight (12.2 mg), root dry weight (13.5 mg), fresh weight (354.0 mg), water saturation deficit (29.75), relative water content (70.25%) and vigor index (338.69). Seeds without osmo priming and hydropriming showed lowest results in studied parameters. In the second experiment, 2% mannitol primed (9 hours) seeds of wheat with and without drought (PEG) stress condition was evaluated. The drought stress level was induced by 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% PEG solution. It was observed that the genotype BARI Gom 31 primed with 2% mannitol for 9 hours seeds placed without drought (control) gave the best performance on studied parameters but under drought stress, the highest germination rate, shoot length, root length, shoot dry weight and root dry weight, fresh weight, relative water content and vigor index were achieved from primed seeds placed on 5% PEG where primed seeds placed on 20% PEG induced drought condition showed lowest results in respected parameters. From the result of the study, it was revealed that seeds primed with 2% mannitol for 9 hours showed the best results compared with water primed and non-primed seed under drought stress condition

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF SAU SHADA BHUTTA-3 UNDER DIFFERENT SPACING AND IRRIGATION FREQUENCY IN RABI SEASON

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYAn experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka to investigate the effect of different spacing and irrigation frequency on the growth and yield response of Shada bhutta-3 during October-2019 to February-2020. The experiment was consisted of two factors. Factor A: Irrigation frequencies (3) viz ; I 1 : Irrigation at 30 days interval, I 2 : Irrigation at 35 days interval and I 3 : Irrigation at 40 days interval and Factor B: Different spacings (4) viz ; S 1 ii : 40 cm × 20 cm, S 2 : 40 cm × 25 cm, S 3 : 50 cm × 20 cm and S 4 : 50 cm × 25 cm. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. Results indicated that irrigation frequency, different spacing and their combination had significant effect on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of Shada bhutta-3. In case of irrigation frequencies the maximum cob length plant -1 (17.26 cm), cob circumference plant -1 (14.94 cm), grain weight cob -1 (90.44 g) and grain yield (9.04 t ha -1 ) were observed in I 1 treatment. At different spacing the maximum cob length plant 1 (15.44 cm), number of rows cob -1 -1 (17.26 cm), cob circumference plant (14.52), number of grains row -1 (28.40), and 1000 grains weight (396.67 g) were observed in S 4 treatment. The maximum grain yield (9.37 t ha -1 ) was observed in S 1 treatment. In case of combination, maximum grain yield (9.54 t ha -1 ) was observed in I 1 S 1 (I 1 : 30 days irrigation interval along with spacing S 1 :40 × 20 cm) treatment combination whereas minimum grain yield (7.45 t ha ) was observed in I 3 S 4 treatment combinatio

    EFFECT OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZER APPLICATION ON RICE PRODUCTION (BRRI dhan29)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Soil Science Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN SOIL SCIENCEThe experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period from December 2020 to May 2021 to examine the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer application on rice production (BRRI dhan29). The experiment consisted of eight treatments viz. T ii 0 (control; no nutrient application), T (100% RDCF: N 120 P 20 K 40 S 20 Zn 2.5 kg ha -1 ), T 2 (100% cowdung - 10 t ha (100% poultry manure - 5 t ha -1 ), T 4 (50% RDCF + 50% cowdung), T (50% RDCF + 50% poultry manure), T 6 (25% RDCF + 75% cowdung) and T 7 5 (25% RDCF + 75% poultry manure). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that a significant variation among the treatments was found while different nutrient levels (organic and inorganic) applied in different combinations. The treatment T 1 (100% RDCF: N 120 P 20 K 40 S ) exhibited the highest plant height at 60, 90 DAT and at harvest (83.73, 95.87 and 94.37 cm, respectively) while the treatment T (50% RDCF + 50% cowdung) showed the highest number of tillers hill -1 4 (13.13, 15.33 and 17.73, respectively) whereas control treatment T (no nutrient application) showed the minimum results. Again, the treatment T 4 0 (50% RDCF + 50% cowdung) showed the highest number of effective tillers hill -1 (16.33), flag leaf length (24.28 cm), number of filled grains panicle (165.40), panicle length (25.94 cm), 1000 seed weight (21.90 g), grain yield (7.66 t ha -1 ), straw yield (8.96 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (46.09%) followed by T (50% RDCF + 50% poultry manure) and T (25% RDCF + 75% poultry manure) whereas the control treatment T 0 7 (no nutrient application) performed the lowest results on the respected parameters. In case of post harvest soil, different treatments of organic and inorganic fertilizers combinations showed non-significant variation on particle density, pH and organic carbon content but available P and S of post harvest soil affected significantly. The treatment T (50% RDCF + 50% cowdung) showed highest P (23.42 ppm) and S (27.40 ppm) content of post harvest soil whereas the lowest P and S content was obtained from control treatment T 4 (no nutrient application). So, the treatment T 4 0 (50% RDCF + 50% cowdung) can be considered as very promising treatment for rice production (BRRI dhan29) to obtain higher grain yield

    EFFECT OF STEM PRUNING ON YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING CHARACTERS OF CHERRY TOMATO IN SOILLESS CULTURE

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HORTICULTUREA pot experiment was conducted in the semi-greenhouse at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka 1207, Bangladesh, during October 2019 to March 2020 to investigate the effect of stem pruning on yield and yield contributing characters of cherry tomato in soilless culture . The experiment consisted of three level of pruning viz. P ii 0 = No pruning; P = One stem pruning and P 2 = Two stem pruning and four different cherry tomato varieties viz. V = BARI Tomato-11; V 2 = BARI Tomato-20; V 3 = Red Star and V = SAU Tomato-2. There were 12 treatment combinations and experiment were setup in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. In case of pruning, the highest plant height, maximum branch number per plant, maximum chlorophyll content, minimum days required for first flowering and first fruiting, maximum flower cluster per plant, maximum fruit number per plant, highest single fruit weight (9.31 4 g), highest amount of TSS (9.46 degrees Brix) and yield per plant (2.37 kg) were obtained from P treatment at 60 DAT. Similarly, in case of varieties, the highest plant height , maximum branch number per plant, maximum chlorophyll content, minimum days required for first flowering and first fruiting, maximum flower cluster per plant, maximum fruit number per plant, highest single fruit weight (8.50 g), highest amount of TSS (8.92 degrees Brix) and yield per plant (2.63 kg) were obtained from V treatment at 60 DAT. In combined effect, the highest plant height , maximum branch number per plant, maximum chlorophyll content, minimum days required for first flowering and first fruiting, maximum flower cluster per plant, maximum fruit number per plant, highest single 2 fruit weight (12.42 g), highest amount of TSS (10.53 degrees Brix ) and yield per plant (2.98 kg) were obtained from V 2 P 2 treatment. Among the treatment combination, V 2 P (BARI Tomato-20 variety with two stem pruning) treatment seemed to be more promising for obtaining the maximum yield of cherry tomato

    GROWTH AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.) VARIETIES UNDER SALINITY

Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, from November 2019 to April 2020 to evaluate the performance of different tomato varieties e.g. BARI Tomato 2 (V1), BARI Tomato 15 (V2), and BARI Tomato 16 (V3) under different level of salinity e.g. 0 mM (S0), 75 mM NaCl (S1) and 150 mM NaCl (S2) in completely randomized design with three replications. The experiment revealed significant negative influence of salinity which decreased plant height, leaf number, branch number, chlorophyll content, growth rate, fresh and dry weight, fruit number etc. resulting yield loss. Damaged by S2 salinity is more severe than the S1. In normal condition V2 produced highest yield following V3 and V1. But severe salinity stress reduced yield by 32.66%, 43.9% and 42.8% in V1, V2 and V3 respectively. So, considering yield performance V1 variety is more tolerant to salinity than the other tested variety

    EFFECT OF INDUCED SALINITY STRESS ON GERMINATION AND ION ACCUMULATION OF COWPEA

This study was conducted to assess the potential for salt tolerance of cowpea genotypes during the germination and early vegetative growth. From the germination test, twenty best performed genotypes were grown at 0, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m at greenhouse of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in two factors Complete Randomized Design with two replications. Factor A was twenty cowpea genotypes and Factor B was four NaCl concentrations. From the result, it was found that TVU-2398 and TVU-1330 showed the highest SPAD value (53.1 and 53.62 SPAD unit). In the leaf, the highest Na was found in TVU-1330 (0.206%) and K + in TVU-2398 (0.24%) and TVU-1330 (0.242%). In case of stem, the highest Na + was found in TVU-1330 (0.29%) and TVU-2398 (0.29%) and K + in TVU-1330 (0.206%). So, the genotypes TVU-1330, TVU-2398 and TVU1059 were performed best under salinity condition than other genotypes

    IMPROVEMENT OF YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF SOYBEAN THROUGH INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT

IN SEED TECHNOLOGYThe experiment was conducted during October 2019 to April 2020 to improve yield and seed quality of soybean through integrated nutrient management. The variety BARI Soybean 5 was used as the test crop. In this experiment, the treatment consisted of fourteen different levels of integrated nutrient management viz. T = no chemical fertilizer, no organic manure (control), T 2 = cow dung (10 t ha -1 ), T = vermi compost (5 t ha -1 ), T 4 = recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) ( Urea 50 kg ha 3 -1 1 ,TSP 150 kg ha , MoP 100 kg ha -1 , Gypsum 80 kg ha -1 , Boron 8 kg ha -1 ) T = trichoderma compost (2 t ha -1 ), T 6 = biochar (10 t ha -1 ), T 7 = cowdung (10 t ha -1 5 ) +50% RDF,T = cowdung(10 t ha -1 ) + 75% RDF, T 9 = vermi compost (5 t ha -1 ) + 50% RDF, T 10 8 = vermi compost (5 t ha -1 ) + 75% RDF, T 11 = trichoderma compost (2 t ha -1 ) + 50% RDF, T = trichoderma compost (2 t ha -1 ) + 75% RDF, T 13 = biochar (10 t ha -1 )+ 50% RDF, T = biochar (10 t ha -1 ) + 75% RDF. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Different levels of integrated nutrient management showed statistically significant variation on all parameters of soybean. The tallest plant (37.3, 50.67, 52.53 and 52.93 cm at 30, 50, 70 days after sowing and at harvest, respectively) was recorded from Biochar( 10 t ha -1 )+50%RDF. The maximum number of leaves plant -1 , pod length (cm), number of pods plant -1 12 14 , number of seeds pod -1 and thousand seed weight (g) as well as the highest seed yield (1333 kg ha ), stover yield(181 kg ha -1 ), biological yield (1513 kg ha -1 ), was observed from Biochar( 10 t ha -1 )+ 50% RDF. On the other hand, the lowest seed yield (639 kg ha ) was observed from T 0 (control) treatment. The highest harvest index was recorded from T (biochar 10 t ha -1 ) treatment . The highest germination 94.33% was obtained in T (Biochar 10 t ha -1 + 50% RDF) treatment.. The highest germination index, coefficient of velocity, energy of emergence, shoot length, root length, vigour index, viability was recorded in T 13 (Biochar 10 t ha -1 + 50% RDF) treatment.. Therefore Biochar(10 t ha ) + 50% RDF may be possible to use in reducing inorganic fertilizer which will increase seed quality with lower production cost without significant yield reduction of soybean

    FOOD SECURITY STATUS OF FISHING HOUSHOLDS IN KISHOREGANJ

The study briefs out the existing issues of food security in haor area of Nikli Upzila. The overall objectives of this study were to examine the present socioeconomic status of the fishing household, which factors were constraints for food security and identified the problems of accessing foods in Nikli Upazila of Kishoreganj district. A total of 110 sample respondents were interviewed by using simple random sampling techniques. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Socioeconomic status and problems faced by the respondents were assessed by using descriptive statistics and presented in tabular form. The extent of dietary diversity which was used to assess the food security status was assessed using descriptive statistics also. The factor determining the food security status of the small scale fishing community at Nikli Upazila was assessed using binary logistic regression analysis. After analyzing the respondent data, result showed that the average family size of sample households was 5.32 and 69.09 % of the survey respondents were found to have no education. Besides among the respondents 59.09 % hold yearly income from BDT 160000-190000. After analyzing, it was found majority of the expenditure spent on food items which hold 55.3 % of total cost. The result showed that age of the respondent, food expenditure, education, access to information having loan were significant factors those affect food security status of the fishing households. Various issues like climate change, population growth, increasing cost of food, uncontrolled market etc. were found to be encountered by respondents in the research region when attempting to obtain food. The respondents ranked the increasing cost of food items as the most serious problem among the six challenges. Therefore, it is highly needed to emphasis government support to ensure the food security

    CLYBIO CONCENTRATION ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CABBAGE UNDER DIFFERENT COLORED SHADE NETS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Horticulture Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka; in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN HORTICULTUREThe experiment was conducted at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to evaluate the growth and yield of cabbage as influenced by two different factors such as factor-A: Colored shade nets viz. without a net (N 0 ), white net (N W ), pink net (N P ), and blue net (N B ), and factor B: Clybio concentration viz. no Clybio application (C 0 ), Clybio concentration at 1000-fold (C 1000 ), and Clybio concentration at 500-fold (C 500 ). The experiment was set up in Split Plot Design with three replications. Data on different growth, physiological and yield parameters were taken in which all the treatments showed significant variations. The use of white shade nets (Nw) provided with better head length (16.0 cm), head diameter (55.7cm), single head weight (1.1 kg), and yield of 45.8 t/ha in comparison to other nets or no net use. Alongside, the sole application of Clybio to cabbage as a 1000-fold liquid solution (C 1000 ) resulted in maximum single head weight (0.8 kg), and yield of 33.3 t/ha while the maximum head length (14.8 cm) was from 500-fold Clybio solution (C 500 ), and head diameter was statistically insignificant between C 1000 . Maximum yield per hectare (62.5 t) was found from N W C 1000 and minimum (20.8 t) was from N 0 C 0 . In consideration to the overall performances, white shade net (N W ) along with the application of 1000-fold Clybio solution (C 1000 ) has the potential for better cabbage production

    PREVALENCE AND PROFILING OF ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY OF A KEY PUBLIC HEALTH PLAYER ESCHERICHIA COLI FROM COMPANION ANIMAL IN DHAKA CITY

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Medicine & Public Health Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN MEDICINE SEMESTER: JULY-DECEMBER 2019This study was conducted in order to isolate, identify and to profiling the status of antibiotic sensitivity of the important public health organism Escherichia coli of companion animal. A total of 30 fecal samples of cats and dogs were collected from two different regions of Dhaka city, aseptically and inoculated onto various culture media for isolation of E. coli. The microorganisms were isolated and identified by performing cultural characteristics and biochemical tests. The study had been conducted based on species, age, location and gender of host species. The prevalence of E. coli infection in cat was 66.67% and in dog was 60.00%, respectively with same ratio of resistance in male and female in dog whereas in cat female were more resistance than male. To perform the disc diffusion method for profiling the antibiotic sensitivity, 10 commonly used antibiotics were used. The highest rate of resistance was recorded in Metronidazole (57.89%) and Amoxicillin (52.63%) followed by Co-trimoxazole (41.10%), Ciprofloxacin (31.57%), Ceftriaxone (31.57%) and Azithromycin (26.31%). The highest rate of sensitivity was recorded to Cefixime (52.63%) followed by Ciprofloxacin (36.84%), Cefuroxime (36.84%) and Gentamicin (36.84%). Data from this study reveal that companion animal like cat and dog carry multi-drug resistant E. coli sp. which can be transferred to human and can cause a public health hazard
