    EFFECT OF DIFFERENT GROWING MEDIA ON BASIL VARIETIES IN SIMULATED INDOOR VERTICAL FARM

Wazed Mia Central Laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2020 to April 2021 to evaluate the effect of growing media on basil varieties in simulated indoor vertical farm. The experiment consisted of two factors; Factor A: Growing media (3 levels) as- M 1 - cocopeat (20%) + vermicompost (70%) + soil (10%), M 2 - vermicompost (90%) + soil (10%), M 3 - biochar (10%) + vermicompost (80%) + soil (10%) and Factor B: Variety (2 levels) as- V 1 - Italian sweet basil and V 2 - Holy basil. The two factors experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Different growing media and varieties significantly influenced on different growth, yield parameter and nutrients of basil. In case of growing media, the highest plant height (39.08 cm), the number of leaves/plant (86.67), the length of leaf (9.37 cm), leaf breadth (5.33 cm), fresh weight (147.83 g) and dry weight (69.62 g), oil content (1.23%) were found from M 1 and those were minimum in M 3 . Considering the varieties, V 2 produced the highest plant (33.26 cm), leaf number (68.11), fresh weight (127.76 g) and dry weight (54.57 g). Moreover, the highest length of leaf (9.92 cm), leaf breadth (5.72 cm), essential oil content (1.17%) were from V 1 . Regarding the combined effect, the highest plant height (43.60 cm), leaf number (100.33), fresh weight (159.49 g) and dry weight (74.78 g) were observed from M 1 V 2 and the lowest plant height (16.27 cm), fresh weight (90.09 g) and dry weight (23.46 g) were observed from M 3 V 1 . However, M 1 gave highest results in P (1.11%), K (1.93%), Na (0.68%) and S (0.67%) and M 3 gave the lowest results. In variety, P (0.92%) and S (0.63%) content were highest in V 1 , lowest in V 2 . Furthermore, K (1.62%) and Na (0.63%) content were highest in V 2 , lowest in V 1 . In combination, the maximum P (1.3%), and S (0.71%) content in basil were found in M 1 V 1 ; minimum P in M 3 V 2 and S in M 3 V 2 . On the contrary, Maximum K (2.2%) and Na (0.76%) were found in M 1 V 2 , minimum in M 3 V 1 . The results showed that the use of vermicompost with cocopeat increased the growth, oil and nutrients in both basils

    EVALUATIONS OF GROWTH AND NUTRITIONAL PROFILE OF MICROGREENS OF DIFFERENT CROPS UNDER VARIOUS LEDs LIGHT SPECTRUMS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN HORTICULTUREThis present study was conducted at an indoor structure on the 5 floor of Dr. Wazed Mia Research Centre, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. During the period from November to December, 2020. The experiment comprised of single factors that is viz., Five different concentrations of LEDs light (White light L 1 II : 100; Red light L 2 : 100; Blue light L 3 : 100; Red: Blue light L 4 th : 70:30 and Red: Green: Blue light L 5 : 70:10:20). Four different crops (C 1 : Mustard, C 2 : Lettuce, C 3 : Broccoli) were used as microgreen crops. Results showed that the highest hypocotyl length of C 1 , C 2 , C 3 and C 4 were (10.53cm, 8.47cm, 15.23cm and 11.43cm) from the treatment of L 4 C 1 , L 4 C 2, L 4 C 3, and L 4 C 4 whereas the lowest (7.67 cm, 5.53 cm, 11.2 cm and 7.73 cm) were found from the control treatment L 1 L 4 C 3, and L 4 C 1 C 4 , L 1 C 2 L 1 C 3 and L 1 C 4 respectively. Treatment of L 4 registered the highest fresh weight of C 1 , C 2 , C 3 (0.1, 0.1, 0.1 and 0.1kg) and yield (0.115, 0.110, 0.135 and .125kg). The treatment L 4 C 1 , L 4 C 2, L 4 C 3, and L 4 C 4 gave the highest SPAD value C 1 (16.9nm), C 3 (55.3nm) and C 4 (49.9nm), nitrogen (%) of C 1 (16.93%), C 3 (55.27%) and C 4 (93.93%), potassium (%) of C 1 (0.19%), C 2 (0.19%), C 3 (0.22%), C 2 (0.22%) and C 4 (0.23%), C 3 : Radish, C 4 C 1 and C 4 , L 4 (38.2nm), C 2 (38.23%), C 2 (0.16%) and antioxidant capacity of C 1 (0.19%) and C 4 (0.18%). The highest and lowest gross income was obtained from L 4 C 1 , L 4 C 2, L 4 C 3, and L 4 C 4 treatment and L 1 C 1 , L 1 C 2 L 1 C 3 and L 1 C 4 treatment. The highest (4.1, 3.9, 4.9 and 4.5) and lowest (2.6, 2.4, 2.7 and 2.6) benefit cost ratio was noted for L 4 L 4 C 3, and L 4 C 4 treatment and L 5 C 1 , L 5 C 2 L 5 C 3 and L 5 C 4 treatment. So, Red and Blue (70:30) light can be economically used

    MORPHOLOGICAL STUDY AND ECONOMIC CONSIDERATION OF CAULIFLOWER CULTIVATION ON ROOFTOP GARDEN USING VARIOUS COMPOSTS

The experiment was laid out in CRD having single factors with three replications. The treatments of this experiment were T = Control (recommended dose of chemical fertilizers), T 1 0 = Vermicompost (10 t ha -1 ) + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers, T 2 = Sawdust (15 t ha -1 ) + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers and T 3 = Cowdung (20 t ha -1 ) + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers. The seedlings of the vegetable (BARI Fulkopi-2) was collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. From the results the maximum pure curd weight per plant (551.60 g), yield per plot (3.95 kg) and yield per hectare (19.75 t) were observed from T (vermicompost @ 10 t ha -1 1 + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers) treatment. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was found to be the highest (3.33) in the treatment of T (vermicompost @ 10 t ha -1 + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers). Thus it was apparent that vermicompost treatment gave the highest yield per hectare (19.75 t) than the other treatments (sawdust and cowdung) and the highest gross return (Tk. 395000.00). The results clearly showed that rooftop is suitable for vegetables production and yield at the rooftop garden

    IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON LIVELIHOODS OF STREET VENDORS IN DHAKA CITY, BANGLADESH

Street vendors in Dhaka city are an integral part of urban economies. Since the COVID-19 pandemic affected all areas, they also suffered from this situation. The study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the livelihoods of street vendors. To attain the objectives, primary data were collected from 122 respondents using simple random sampling in three areas of Dhaka city with a pre-tested questionnaire in March-April 2022. Descriptive statistics and the livelihood assessment index (LAI) method were used to analyze the data. The results showed that COVID-19 had a negative impact on the livelihoods of street vendors. The pandemic affected different capitals of the sustainable livelihood framework (SLF) in different ways, with social capital extended and financial and human capital compensating, while other capital remained constant. Street vendors' household income decreased during the pandemic, and though many were expected to migrate to the village, only a few did. Street vendors managed to sustain their livelihoods through vending businesses, taking loans from various sources, and spending their previous savings. To protect this vulnerable group from future similar events, they need to be encouraged to save more and strengthen their social capital. This study provides a clear understanding of the adverse effects of COVID-19 on the livelihoods of street vendors in Dhaka city. It highlights the need for effective policy measures to mitigate the impact in the future

    EFFECT OF DIFFERENT PLANT EXTRACT ON YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF COUNTRY BEAN

    A Thesis Submitted to the Institute of Seed Technology Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN SEED TECHNOLOGYThe experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2019 to April 2020 to study the effect of different plant extract on yield and seed quality of country bean. The experiment consisted of 7 treatments such as T 1 (Neem seed extract), T 2 (Neem oil), T 3 (Mehogoni seed extract), T 4 (Black pepper extract), T 5 (Garlic extract), T 6 (Tobacco extract) and Untreated control. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results revealed that at early, mid and late pod development stage, the minimum incidence of number of bean pod borer larva plant (5.97, 7.89 and 8.54, respectively) and number of aphid plant -1 (2.49, 2.23 and 4.27, respectively) was recorded in the T 2 (Neem oil) treated whereas untreated control treatment showed highest incidence of bean pod borer larva and aphid plant -1 . Considering pods plant at early, mid and late pod development stage, the highest number of healthy pods plant (88.11, 138.90 and 72.77, respectively) and highest pod weight plant -1 (483.33, 658.33 and 247.33 g, respectively) were harvested from T 2 (Neem oil) treatment. In terms of % reduction of infestation over control by number and weight, T 2 (Neem oil) treatise with the showed best performance and this treatment also showed the highest number of inflorescence plant -1 (30.86), number of flower inflorescence (10.57), pod length (11.19 cm), number of pods plant (1470.67 g), pod yield (14.71 t ha -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 (16.01), number of pods inflorescence ), seed yield plant -1 (326.03 g), weight of pods plant -1 (179.90 g) and seed yield ha (1799.00 kg) followed by T 5 (Garlic extract) treated plot whereas untreated control showed poorest results. The treatment T 2 (Neem oil) also produced the best quality seeds and showed highest seed germination (92.67%), shoot length (8.01 cm), root length (4.17 cm) and seed vigor index (1129.00) of 12 days aged seedlings followed by T 5 (Garlic extract) treated plot whereas untreated control treatment gave the poorest result. So, it may be concluded that the treatment T 2 (Neem oil) can be considered as best against aphid and bean pod borer infesting country bean and production of quality seeds

    RESPONSE OF DIFFERENT GENOTYPES OF BORO RICE TO FOLIAR APPLICATION OF MICRONUTRIENTS UNDER SALINITY STRESS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYThe field experiment was conducted at net house of the department of agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from November, 2019 to March, 2020 to evaluate the effect of foliar application of micronutrients for increasing salinity tolerance in rice plants. The experiment consisted of three factors. The factors were: factor A: Salinity level (2): S₁ = Control (No saline water) and S₂ = 150 mM NaCl; factor B: Micronutrients (4): M₁ = Control (No micronutrients), M₂ = Zinc (0.5%), M₃ = Boron (0.5%) and M₄ = Zinc (0.5%) + Boron (0.5%); factor C: Variety (5): V₁ = BINA dhan10, V₂ = BINA dhan8, V₃ = BRRI dhan29, V₄ = BRRI dhan47 and V₅ = BRRI dhan67. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD factorial design with three (3) replications. Results showed that the salinity stress-imposed plants S₂ (150 mM NaCl) were out-yielded by producing 58.23% lower grain yield than control plants S₁ (No saline water). The treatment S₂ (150 mM NaCl) also showed the shortest plant at harvest (78.69 cm), lowest tillers hill −1 (6.27), shortest leaf at harvest (28.50 cm), narrowest leaf at harvest (1.45 cm), shortest panicle length (18.56 cm), lowest filled grains panicle⁻¹ (52.04), highest unfilled grains panicle⁻¹ (17.07), maximum weight of 1000-grains (17.86 g), straw yield (21.69 g hill ), biological yield (42.40 g hill −1 ) and harvest index (48.84%) in compare to control or no salinity stress-imposed plants. Significant differences existed among different levels of micronutrient applications with respect to yield and yield attributing parameters. A yield advantages of 5.28 g, 5.31 g and 10.94 g hill −1 over M₁ (No micronutrients), M₃ [B (0.5%)] and M₂ [Zn (0.5%)] applied pot, respectively was found which was possibly aided by taller plant (86.24 cm), higher tillers hill −1 (7.94), longer panicle (22.21 cm), maximum filled grains panicle⁻¹ (67.79), lowest unfilled grains panicle⁻¹ (12.19), highest weight of 1000-grains (20.93 g), straw yield (26.07 g hill −1 ), biological yield (56.31 g hill −1 ) and harvest index (53.70%) in the M₄ [Zn + B (0.5%)] treatment. On the other hand, treatment M₃ [B (0.5%)] gave similar results to M₄ treatment in some parameters like—plant height, tillers number, leaf length, unfilled grains panicle⁻¹, panicle length, weight of 1000-grains, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. M₃ [B (0.5%)] or M₄ [Zn + B (0.5%)] treatment seemed promising in mitigating salinity stress in rice field compared to individual application of zinc or boron. Results also showed that V₅ (BRRI dhan67) exhibited its superiority to other tested variety BINA dhan10, BINA dhan8 and BRRI dhan29 in terms of seed yield, the former out-yielded over V₁ (BINA dhan10) by 13.34%, V₂ (BINA dhan8) by 1.27% and V₃ (BRRI dhan29) by 1.20 % higher yield. Interaction of S₁V₂M₁ (No saline water × BINA dhan8 × No micronutrients) performed better in most of the studied parameters. The S₁V₂M₁ treatment combination also showed better performance in terms of grain yield. Taking together these results suggested that B (0.5%) or Zinc (0.5%) + Boron (0.5%) combined application along with variety BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan67 showed better performance under salinity stress condition

    USE OF MODERN ONION CULTIVATION PRACTICES BY THE FARMERS OF PABNA DISTRICT

The study was undertaken purposively in Santhia upazila under Pabna district. Validated and well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 120 farmers during 15 th February to 15 th March, 2021. Descriptive statistics, multiple regressions were used for analysis. The majority 52.94 percent of the farmers had medium use of modern onion cultivation practices compared to having 19.61 percent high and 27.45 percent had low use of modern onion cultivation practices, respectively. Among 12 selected characteristics of the farmers 4 characteristics namely, education, training exposure, onion cultivation experience and onion cultivation knowledge of the respondents had significant positive contribution with their use of modern onion cultivation practices. The rest 8 characteristics namely, age, farm size, onion cultivation area, annual income family income, income from onion cultivation, extension contact, problem faced in onion cultivation and attitude towards onion cultivation had no significant contribution with their use of modern onion cultivation practices

    STUDY ON FIELD AND STORAGE PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF DISEASES OF SIX BARI ONION VARIETIES

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PLANT PATHOLOGYThe experiment was conducted in the field and store house of Spices Research Centre, BARI Shibganj, Bogura, Bangladesh during 2019-2020 to evaluate the field and storage performance of six varieties of BARI Piaz viz., BARI Piaz-1, BARI Piaz-2, BARI Piaz3, BARI Piaz-4, BARI Piaz-5 and BARI Piaz-6. The field experiment was conducted for producing bulbs and observing the field performance. In the field BARI Piaz-4 showed maximum plant height (50.39-71.50 cm), bulb length (7.57cm), bulb diameter (4.97cm), single bulb weight (71.33g) and yield (36.53t/ha). Where BARI Piaz-5 showed minimum plant height (43.05-58.61 cm), bulb length (4.84cm), bulb diameter (3.91cm), single bulb weight (41.17g) and yield (14.64 t/ha). On the other hand, highest disease incidence of purple blotch (4.19%) and Stemphylium (43.41%) were observed in BARI Piaz-5 where lowest disease incidence of purple blotch (3.49%) and Stemphylium (34.91%) were observed in BARI Piaz-4. After air dried the harvested onion bulbs of six varieties were stored in the store house. Bulbs were stored in a wooden structure under ambient condition. The average air temperature of the store house was 27.19-29.30℃ and humidity 61.63-80.90%. Different storage performances were recorded at an interval of 15 days viz., 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135 and 150 DAI. Highest number of sprouted bulbs were observed in BARI Piaz3 at 15, 30, 45, 60, 75and 90 DAI. Where lowest number of sprouted bulbs were observed in BARI Piaz-4. Total percent of sprouted bulbs 8.51%, 38.51%, 46.34%, 14.33%, 29.67% and 15% were observed in V 1, V 2, V 3, V 4, V 5 and V 6 respectively. Highest number of rotten bulbs were observed in BARI Piaz-3 and lowest number of rotten bulbs were observed in BARI Piaz-4. Total percent of rotted bulbs 56.17%, 56.83%, 73.17%, 40.27%, 58.16% and 62.99% were observed in V 1, V 2, and V 6 respectively. At storage, total maximum bulb weight loss 78.70% was observed in BARI Piaz-3 where minimum weight loss 49.42% was observed in BARI Piaz-4. From the study it is found that BARI Piaz-4 performed best than the other varieties at storage. Where BARI Piaz-3 showed lower performance. Aspergillus niger, Fusarium sp. and Penicillium sp. have been found to cause diseases during postharvest storage condition. In this study, 65% rotten of onion bulbs by Aspergillus niger, 20% by Fusarium sp., 10% by Penicillium sp. and 5% by other pathogens were found

    INFLUENCE OF ORGANIC MANURES ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MINT, CHILLI AND INDIAN SPINACH USING GEOTEX VERTICAL FARMING TECHNOLOGY

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HORTICULTUREThe experiment was carried out at the “Horticulture Farm” of Sher -e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during December 2019 to May 2020 to study the effect of different organic manures on growth and yield of horticultural crops like mint, chilli and indian spinach. (7x4) sq feet vertical structure was used. Each pocket contains 4 kg growing media. Long lasting and eco friendly geo textile cloth was used to make pocket for crop plantation. Those pockets were attached with vertical structure. The experiment consisted of one factor and these are T 1 iii :Control; T 2 :2 kg vermicompost and 2 kg soil per pocket; T 3 :1.5 kg vermicompost, 0.5 kg coco fibre and 2 kg soil per pocket and T 4 :2 kg kitchen compost and 2 kg soil per pocket. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded on growth, yield components and yield of mint, chilli and indian spinach and significant variation was observed for most of the studied characters. In case of mint the highest production from individual plant was recorded from T 3 (1.5 kg Vermicompost, 0.5 kg coco fibre and 2 kg soil per pocket) which was 151.40 g per plant. The lowest production from individual plant was recorded from T 1 (control) which was 80.00 g per plant. In case of chilli results revealed that the highest fruit production (88.43 g) was obtained from T 3 (1.5 kg vermicompost, 0.5 kg coco fibre and 2 kg soil per pocket) which was significantly different from others treatments. On the other hand the lowest fruit production (24 g) was obtained from T 1 (control) which was statistically similar to T 4 (2 kg kitchen compost and 2 kg soil per pocket) and the yield was 29.67 g. In case of indian spinach the highest production from individual plant was recorded from T 3 (1.5 kg vermicompost, 0.5 kg coco fibre and 2 kg soil per pocket) which was 290.66 g. The lowest production from individual plant was recorded from T 1 (control) which was 71.33 g

    RESIDUAL EFFECT OF CHITOSAN RAW MATERIAL POWDER ON YIELD PERFORMANCE OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) UNDER TOMATO-OKRA CROPPING SYSTEM

    A Thesis Submitted to the faculty of agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN SOIL SCIENCE SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021An experiment was conducted at the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, during the kharif 1 season (May to September, 2019) to examine the residual effect of chitosan raw material powder on yield performance of okra under tomato-okra cropping system. BARI Dheros-1 was used as test crop. The experiment was carried out in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with the four replications. The experiments were consist of five treatments having four levels of CHT raw material powder. The treatments were T 1 = 0% CHT raw material powder (control), T 2 = 0.1% CHT raw material powder applied in the previous expt., T 3 = 0.2% CHT raw material powder applied in the previous expt., T 4 = 0.3% CHT raw material powder applied in the previous expt. and T 5 = 0.4% CHT raw material powder applied in the previous expt. .Yield and yield contributing characters positively responded with increasing rate of CHT raw material powder. The fruit yield significantly increased in T 4 treatment 7.31 t ha -1 (45.08% yield increased over the control) compared to T 1 control treatment 5.04 t ha -1 . But T 3 treatment shows statistically identical fruit yield 6.36 t ha -1 (26.19% yield increased over the control) compare to the T 1 control 5.04 t ha -1 . The residual effect of the chitosan raw material powder has a positive effect on the increase of total nitrogen, the highest N value 0.112 % was recorded in T 5 treatments and lowest value was observed in T 1 control treatment. From the three layer of soil the maximum value of the soil pH 6.74, 6.66 and 6.53 of 030 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-90 cm respectively, organic carbon content 0.70%, 0.66% and 0.60% of 0-30 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-90 cm respectively, and organic matter content 1.21%, 1.14%, and 1.03% of 0-30 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-90 cm respectively in the postharvest soils were found in the T 5 treatment and lowest values were observed in the control treatment. Above discussion revealed that the yield and yield contributing characters of okra and some chemical properties of soil were improved due to the residual effect of CHT raw material powder. Residual nitrogen value indicates that the CHT raw material powder has a slow releasing nitrogen supplementation, soil organic carbon and soil pH. These results suggest that the residual effect of CHT raw material powder could play an important role to improve the sustainable soil health
