EFFECT OF NPK AND BENZYLAMINOPURINE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CHICKPEA

levels of NPK was assigned to main plots and benzylaminopurine level to sub plots
with three replications. Data were recorded on growth, yield components and yield of
chickpea. The significant variations were observed for most of the characters studied.
In case of NPK fertilizer management, the maximum pod length (1.68 cm), seeds pod

EFFECT OF SUBSTRATE OF MOTHER SPAWN ON CONTAMINATION AND YIELD OF OYSTER MUSHROOM (Pleurotus ostreatus)

PLANT PATHOLOGYThe experiment was carried out during the period from November 2020 to March 2021
to find out the effect of substrate of mother spawn on contamination and productivity
of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). Nine different treatments were used as viz.

= White maize. The experiment was
laid out in single factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with replications. The
highest mycelium running rate of mother spawn (0.85 cm/day) was observed when the
rice grain was used. The minimum duration required from incubation to completion of
mycelium running of mother spawn (16.33 days) and maximum mycelium weight
(4.08) was observed in rice. The minimum duration required from incubation to
completion of mycelium running in yield packets (18.33), from stimulation to
primordial initiation (5.89 days), from primordial initiation to 1st harvest (5.67 days)
and the lowest total harvesting period (40.00 days) were found when mother spawn of
rice was used. Again, the maximum number of primordia (87.33), effective fruiting
body per packet (31.00), the highest length of pileus (5.17 cm) and width of pileus (7.49
cm) were found at mother spawn of rice. Oyster mushroom grown on sawdust
substrates where mother spawn of rice inoculated gave the highest biological yield
(175.67 g), economic yield (168.33 g) and biological efficiency (35.13%). During the
cultivation period four contaminants namely Trichoderma sp. Penicillium sp, Rhizopus
stolonifer and Aspergillus niger were isolated and identified from contaminated
substrates. Percent contamination of fungi gradually increased with the increase of days
after stimulation. After 45 days after stimulation (DAT), packets inoculated with rice
and wheat mother spawn were not contaminated. Among the treatments, the
performance of mother spawn of rice was better economically as well as growth and
yield performance for the cultivation of oyster mushroom
COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF CHEMICAL FUNGICIDES AGAINST SHEATH BLIGHT DISEASE OF RICE IN AMAN SEASON

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of chemical fungicides for
the management of sheath blight disease of rice at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural
University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during July 2019 to November 2019, following
randomized complete block design (RCBD) and complete randomized design (CRD)
with 3 replications for in vivo and in vitro experiments, respectively. Sheath blight
disease susceptible variety BR 11 was used in these experiments. Fifteen treatments

GENETIC DIVERSITY ANALYSIS OF GREEN CHILI (Capsicum frutescens L.)

SEMESTER: JAN-JUNE, 2021The present research work was conducted to study the characterization and genetic
diversity analysis of green chili during the period from October 2019 to March 2020 in rabi
season in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla
Nagar, Dhaka 1207. In this experiment 20 chili genotypes were used as experimental
material in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of
variance revealed highly significant differences among genotypes for different characters
studied. The highest phenotypic co-efficient of variation (70.09) and genotypic co-efficient
of variation (69.64) was found in yield per plant (g). High heritability coupled with high
genetic advance and genetic advance in percentage of mean was found in yield per plant
(g) which indicated predominance of additive gene expression on this character and direct
phenotypic selection of this character. The genotypic correlation coefficients were higher
than the corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficients, indicating strong inherent
association between the characters under studied. Investigation on character association
indicating that yield per plant had the highest significant positive correlation with
individual fruit weight in both genotypic and phenotypic level. Path analysis revealed that
plant height (cm), number of primary branches and individual fruit weight (g) showed
positive direct effect on yield per plant (g) indicating that direct selection based on these
traits. Principal component analysis identified three principal components, which
contributed 68.06% of cumulative variance. The 20 genotypes were grouped into five
different clusters. The highest intra-cluster distance was computed for cluster V. The
maximum inter cluster divergence was observed between cluster III and V and the lowest
was between cluster I and II. Therefore, considering the magnitude of genetic distance,
contribution of character towards divergence, magnitude of cluster mean and agronomic
performance the genotypes G18 from cluster V for number of primary branches, G14 from
cluster IV for individual fruit weight (g) and days to first harvest and G5, G11 and G13
from cluster III for yield per plant might be considered better parents for future
hybridization programme
YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO AS INFLUENCED BY BIOADSORBENT IN ARSENIC TREATED SOIL

significant portion of Irrigation water is arsenic (As) contaminated. To produce safe potato under As
contarnmated soil. a pot experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangia
Agncultuml University. Dhaka during the period from November 2020 to Apnl 2021 to find out thc effect
of nee husk 3S an bro-adsorbent to decontaminate As toxicity in potato. TIle experiment consisted of two
factors. Factor A: Arsenic levels (4) vi:.. ASo:control (0 mg As kg" soil). As,: 20 mg As kg I soil. Asj: 40
mg As kg·1 soil. and Asc 60 mr As kg" soil. Factor B: Rice husk levels (4) viz .• Ro: control (0 g kg I soil),
RI: 20 g kg" soil. Rl: 40 g kg' soil and RJ: 60 g kg" soil. TIIC experiment was laid out in a randomized
complete block design with three replications. Data were recorded on yield and some quality contributing
parameters of potato. Results revealed that As and/or rice husk had significant effect on most of the yield
lind quality contributing parameters studied in this experiment. The result revealed that number of tubers
plan r1 gradually increased with increasing both As and rice husk levels. On the other hand. mean tuber
weight decreased with increasing As level, but in case of rice husk and their combination had no effect
this parameter, Yield of potato (g plant') gradually decreased with the increase of As levels while
increased with increasing rice husk levels. The maximum yields (runge 399.33- 416.67 g plant I) were
obtained from ASoR2• ASoR,. As1RI, AsIRl and As,RJ whereas, the minimum was from As)RJ (350.33 g
plant I). Specific gravity and dry matter content of both flesh and peel showed negative trends with
increasing As levels in soil. vice- versa results were recorded from rice husk levels. The combined effects
of As and rice husk had significant effect on specific gravity, but not on both flesh and peel dry mailer
content. The highest specific gravity (1.0749 g ern") was observed from~. Therefore. potato growers
can grow potato up to 20 mg As kg" contaminated soil treated with 20 g rice husk kgl soil. which
contains safe As load than the critical one (0.157 mg As kg -I FW) for human consumptio
INFLUENCE OF BUD PRUNING AND FOLIAR APPLICATION OF ZINC AND BORON ON GROWTH, FLOWERING AND YIELD OF BRINJAL

brinjal. BARI Begun 8 variety was used as planting material. The two factors experiment

(No pruning). The present result also shows that foliar
application of zinc and boron significantly increased the growth contributing characters,
fruit weight as well as yield of brinjal. The combined effect of apical bud pruning and foliar
application with 0.2% (Zn+B) produced the tallest plant (56.00 cm), at harvest the highest
number of fruits per plant (19.67), the highest yield per pot (1.97 kg),the highest yield ton
per hectare (33.00 ton), whereas the lowest value was found from P

FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION IN RDA DEVELOPED IRRIGATION AND WATER DEVELOPMENT PROJECT: CASE OF RICE GROWERS IN NORTHERN BANGLADESH

MANAGEMENT AND FINANCENorthern regions of Bangladesh are particularly exposed to droughts. Rural
Development Academy (RDA) situated in that part is engaged to deliver
sustainable rural development through innovation and practices. This study
identified the factors driving the participation of farmers in RDA developed
irrigation project by employing descriptive statistics and logistic regression
model. Primary data were collected from 100 respondents from Bamunia,
Rohimabad, Katabaria, Shotibari and Chockpahari villages of Shajahanpur and
Sherpur Upazilla under Bogura district through face-to-face interview.
Approximately, 77% of the respondents were under water development project.
The findings indicated that education of the respondent and farm sizes were
crucial for project participation. To increase the project participation, this study
also draws some recommendations such the relevant authority could invest on
improving the knowledge of the farmers by educating them through training,
ensuring the availability of such project in different locations can also help
farmers to deal with water crisis during drought season

SEED HEALTH STUDY OF SELECTED SEED SPICES AND CULINARY HERBS OF BANGLADESH

PLANT PATHOLOGYA laboratory experiment was carried out to evaluate the seed health and
quality status of selected seed spices and culinary herbs viz. coriander,
cumin, dill, black cumin, fennel and fenugreek during July 2019 to
December 2020 at Seed Health Laboratory of Department of Plant
Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Seeds of 15 varieties were collected from local market and Spice
Research Centre, BARI, Bogura. Seed health study was conducted by
following the rules of International Seed Testing Association (1999). In
inspection of dry seed method, pathogenic structures, fruiting body and
physical abnormalities viz. deformed, shrinkage, swelling, spotted and
undersized seeds were recorded. It was exposed that seeds of selected
spices and culinary herbs yielded six fungal species in blotter method.
Through blotter plate method, the incidence and frequency of identified
pathogen has been recorded. The identified fungi were Aspergillus flavus,
Aspergillus niger, Fusarium sp., Alternaria spp., Chaetomium sp. and
Rhizopus sp. Percent pathogen incidence of identified fungi and
unidentified pathogen were also recorded. The highest percentage of seed
borne pathogen infection was found in the local seeds; 68.2% in
coriander, 43.65% in cumin, 71.9% in dill, 47.5% in black cumin, 56% in
fennel and 54.5% in fenugreek seeds. Most of the seed-borne pathogens
reduced the germination and produced diseased seedlings in blotter
method. Considering the frequency and occurrence of seed borne
pathogen, 54% pathogenic infection was recorded in three varieties of
coriander. However, in cumin 81.88% seed borne pathogenic infection
was found in two varieties. Moreover, in dill, black cumin, fennel and
fenugreek seeds, seed borne pathogenic infection were 49.5%, 71,88%,
63.75%, 61.5% respectively
