EFFICACY OF SOME SELECTED BOTANICALS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF SQUASH

ENTOMOLOGYExperiment was conducted in research field of the department of entomology,
Sher- e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in order to evaluate the efficacy
of some botanicals against major insect pests of squash. The experiment was
laid out seven treatments and three replications in a randomized complete block
design (RCBD). The treatments were neem oil, neem seed kernel extract,
datura seed extract, garlic bulb extract, mehagany seed extract, black pepper
seed extract and control. In context of controlling fruit fly infestation in squash,
lowest fruit infestation in terms of percent fruit infested (6.17%@1 day after
first spray, 9.09%@7 days after first spray, 14.90%@7 days after second spray,
24.33%@7 days after second spray) obtained from neem oil treated plots.
Similarly, lowest population of aphids (6.54 aphids per leaf and 4.23 aphids per
leaf during vegetative and fruiting stage respectively), red pumpkin beetle (0.18
per plot and 0.69 per plot during vegetative and fruiting stage respectively) and
epilachna beetle (0.02 per plot and 0.29 per plot respectively) obtained from
neem oil treated plots. Moreover, the lowest leaf damage (5.66% damaged
leaves per plant) obtained from neem oil also. However, highest yield of squash
in terms of fruit length (37.48 cm) and yield (38.64 ton/ha) was obtained from
neem oil treatment. Among the botanicals neem oil was the best for control of
major insect pests of squash

PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF HOMESTEAD VEGETABLES PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NETROKONA DISTRICT

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSThe present study is an attempt to examine profitability analysis of homestead vegetables
production in some selected area of Netrokona district in January 2021 to March 2021. In
total 30 farmers were randomly selected from three villages namely Patra, Kashimala and
Dampara in Purbadhala upazila under Netrokona district. The major findings of the study
revealed that production of all the selected homestead vegetables was profitable. Gross
cost of producing tomato for small, medium and large farm were Tk. 3136.17, 3207.31
and 3040.80 respectively and in cabbage production for small, medium and large farm
were Tk. 3159.26, 3059.77 and 3163.82 respectively and the corresponding gross returns
for small, medium and large farm in tomato production were Tk. 7087.80, 7473 and 7602
and in cabbage production were Tk. 5752, 6120 and 6800, respectively. Net returns for
small, medium and large farm of producing tomato were Tk. 3951.63, 4265.70 and
4561.20 and for cabbage production were Tk. 2596.74, 3065.23 and 3636.18
respectively. Benefit cost ratio of tomato is highest for the large farm (2.50) followed by
the medium farm (2.33) and small farm (2.26). In cabbage production, benefit cost ratio
is highest for large farm (2.15) followed by the medium farm (2.00) and small farm
(1.82). The farmers earned the highest profit from tomato followed by cabbage. The
study reported some problems and constraints faced by the farmers during production and
marketing of selected homestead vegetables. These problems were: lack of capital,
inadequate supply of good quality seeds, unavailability and high prices of insecticides,
high prices of fertilizers, inadequate storage facilities, dominance of intermediaries and
lack of market information. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations
were made to improve practices for selected homestead vegetables production with a
view to increase the income and employment opportunities of the farmers
INFLUENCE OF ELICITORS AND SEED RATE ON ENHANCING GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF BLACK CUMIN (Nigella sativa)

experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of nitrogen and zinc on the growth
and yield of onion. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor A: 0 kg/ha (N

(0 kg/ha) treatment gave the shortest plant (43.83 cm). The maximum
(8.02) number of leaves, highest leaf length (39.87 cm), highest length of bulb (4.81
cm), highest diameter of the bulb (4.40 cm), maximum stem diameter (1.50 cm), fresh
leaf weight (22.82 g), dry leaf weight (11.94 g), maximum (48.70 g) fresh bulb,
maximum (3.53 kg/plot) yield, and maximum (17.56 t/ha) total yield also performed by

(140 kg/ha). Among all the growth as well as yield and yield attributing traits Zn

However, the maximum height (54.32cm) of the plant, the highest (9.85) number of

weight (25.30 g), dry leaf weight (13.56 g, maximum length of bulb (5.23 cm), highest
diameter of the bulb (4.81 cm), maximum fresh bulb weight (57.68 g) of the, highest
yield (3.96 kg/plot) of the plant, and the maximum total yield (19.78 t/ha) of the plant
also found in N

replications. Data were collected on different aspects of growth, yield attributes, yield
and seed quality of T. aman rice. Results revealed that, BRRI dhan32 gave the highest

) and maximum seed germination percentage (87.06%). This
may be attributed to the maximum number of effective tillers hill

(14.83), longest
panicle (28.64 cm), the highest number of filled grains panicle

ENTOMOLOGYThe present experiment was conducted to study the incidence of insect pests in broccoli and their
eco-friendly management using neem products during November 2019 to February 2020 at the
central experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The
experiment comprised of seven different treatments (neem oil, neem seed kernel extract, neem
seed extract, neem leaf extract, neem bark, extract, neem bark powder and untreated control).
The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications.
Different treatments expressed significant differences on morphological, physiological
parameters, yield attributing traits and yield of broccoli. Among different treatments, neem oil
showed the best performance in reducing the number of cabbage worm, diamondback moth,
cabbage semi-looper, aphid and flea beetle (1.73 cabbage worm, 1.59 diamondback moth, 1.17
cabbage semi-looper, 1.16 aphid and 0.87 flea beetle, respectively), leaf infestation (15.41%) and
plant infestation (33.33%) per five tagged plants and increased plant height, leaf length, leaf
breadth, card length, card diameter, card perimeter and yield (42.69 cm, 40.12 cm, 13.76 cm,
22.11 cm, 20.11 cm, 38.23 cm, 16.23 ton ha

Xanthomonas citri pv. ctitri (Xcc), causing citrus canker - the most devastating disease of
citrus, has been studied through biochemical analysis, morphological characterization and invitro
management by selected botanicals. The laboratory works has been done at Central
Laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. In biochemical
test, the pathogen reacted on Gram Staining and Kovac’s negative but the isolate was positive
for KOH. All isolates were found rod shaped, with colony colour ranging from yellow to pale
yellow with mucoid surface. Altogether 100 fruits and 300 leaves samples were collected
from three markets and four nurseries of Dhaka districts, respectively and pathogenicity of
Xanthomonas citri was tested. The isolates showed varied reactions in the symptoms
development. In total, eighteen isolates from infected fruits and twenty one isolates from
infected leaves were characterized. The isolates viz. Xcc-F-1, Xcc-F-2, Xcc-F-3, Xcc-F-4,
Xcc-F-5 and Xcc-F-6 were found highly virulent and produced typical symptoms at the point
of inoculation within 13 to 15 days while isolates Xcc-F-1 to Xcc-F-21 developed symptoms
within 12 to 15 days in leaves. Six botanical extracts namely, Neem (T
1
), Tulsi (T
2
), Ginger
(T
3
), Turmeric (T
4
), Garlic (T
5
), and Onion (T
6
) were evaluated for their efficacy against
Xanthomonas citri. Zingiber officinale (Ginger) showed the highest 15.87 ± 0.0 mm and 9.40
± 0.0 mm diameter inhibition zone against the isolated bacteria in 1:1 (25g) and 1:2 (100g)
concentrations, respectively followed by 7.50 ± 0.0 mm diameter recorded in Azadiricta
indica in 1:4 concentration. Allium sativum extract showed the lowest 8.0, 6.70 and 5.83 mm
diameter of inhibition against the isolated bacteria in all concentrations. The present
investigation concludes that there exist pathological and biochemical variations amongst the
different isolates of Xanthomonas citri pv. citri and the tested botanicals showed promising
performances in control the pathogen in- vitro
