    EFFICACY OF SOME SELECTED BOTANICALS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF SQUASH

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Entomology Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfilment of the requirements For the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN ENTOMOLOGYExperiment was conducted in research field of the department of entomology, Sher- e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in order to evaluate the efficacy of some botanicals against major insect pests of squash. The experiment was laid out seven treatments and three replications in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The treatments were neem oil, neem seed kernel extract, datura seed extract, garlic bulb extract, mehagany seed extract, black pepper seed extract and control. In context of controlling fruit fly infestation in squash, lowest fruit infestation in terms of percent fruit infested (6.17%@1 day after first spray, 9.09%@7 days after first spray, 14.90%@7 days after second spray, 24.33%@7 days after second spray) obtained from neem oil treated plots. Similarly, lowest population of aphids (6.54 aphids per leaf and 4.23 aphids per leaf during vegetative and fruiting stage respectively), red pumpkin beetle (0.18 per plot and 0.69 per plot during vegetative and fruiting stage respectively) and epilachna beetle (0.02 per plot and 0.29 per plot respectively) obtained from neem oil treated plots. Moreover, the lowest leaf damage (5.66% damaged leaves per plant) obtained from neem oil also. However, highest yield of squash in terms of fruit length (37.48 cm) and yield (38.64 ton/ha) was obtained from neem oil treatment.     EFFECT OF FERTILIZER DOSES ON MORPHOLOGICAL AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF MUSTARD VARIETIES

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Botany Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL BOTANYThe experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research Farm, Dhaka during Rabi season, December 2020 to February 2021 to find out the effect of fertilizer doses on morphological and yield performance of mustard varieties. The experiment comprised of two factors - the treatment consisted of four different levels of fertilizer application viz. F 0 = Control (no fertilization), F 1 = 85% fertilization compared to recommended fertilization (204 kg ha -1 Urea, 136 kg ha xi -1 TSP, 68 kg ha MoP and 119 kg ha -1 Gypsum), F 2 = BARC recommended fertilizer dose (100%) (240 kg ha Urea, 160 kg ha -1 TSP, 80 kg ha -1 MoP and 140 kg ha -1 Gypsum) and F 3 = 115% fertilization compared to recommended fertilization (276 kg ha -1 Urea, 184 kg ha -1 MoP and 161 kg ha -1 Gypsum) and three different varieties viz. V 1 -1 -1 TSP, 92 kg ha = BARI Sarisha-9, V 2 = BARI Sarisha-14 and V 3 = BARI Sarisha-15. The experiment consisted of two factor and laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The collected data were statistically analyzed and a significant variation among the treatments was found in respect of majority of the observed parameters. The highest plant population (66.33 m -2 ) was recorded from F 3 treatment. The tallest plant was recorded from 115% fertilizer application (F 3 ). Significantly maximum branches plant -1 , dry matter weight plant -1 , siliqua plant -1 and seed siliqua -1 were recorded from F 2 and F 3 treatment with 100% and 115% fertilization, respectively. The maximum thousand seed weight (2.98 g) was recorded from V 3 (BARI Sarisha-15). The highest plant population (77.25 m ) was observed in case of BARI Sarisha-15. The tallest plant of mustard was found in case of with BARI Sarisha-15. The maximum branches plant -1 , dry matter weight plant , siliqua plant -1 and seed siliqua -1 were obtained from BARI Sarisha-14 (V 2 ). The highest yield of seed (0.95 t ha -1 ) was obtained from BARI Sarisha-14. The combinations of different fertilizer doses and varieties had significant effect on almost all the parameters. The higher yield of seed was obtained from F 2 V 2 (1.15 t ha -1 ), F 2 V 3 (1.08 t ha (1.16 t ha -1 ) treatment combination. The highest biological yield (4.02 t ha ) was obtained from F 2 V 3 and the highest harvest index was obtained from F 2 V 2 -1 -1 -1 -2 ) and F 3 (30.75%) and F 3 (29.37%) treatment combination. Considering the results, it can be concluded that both the variety BARI Sarisha-14 and BARI Sarisha-15 provided better yield than the other variety and F 2 and F 3 fertilizer dose provided better yield for most of the mustard varieties. Bari Sharisha-14 (V 2 ) with 100% (F 2 ) fertilization resulted comparatively better morphological, physiological and yield characteristics

    PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF HOMESTEAD VEGETABLES PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NETROKONA DISTRICT

    A thesis submitted to The Department of Agricultural Economics, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSThe present study is an attempt to examine profitability analysis of homestead vegetables production in some selected area of Netrokona district in January 2021 to March 2021. In total 30 farmers were randomly selected from three villages namely Patra, Kashimala and Dampara in Purbadhala upazila under Netrokona district. The major findings of the study revealed that production of all the selected homestead vegetables was profitable. Gross cost of producing tomato for small, medium and large farm were Tk. 3136.17, 3207.31 and 3040.80 respectively and in cabbage production for small, medium and large farm were Tk. 3159.26, 3059.77 and 3163.82 respectively and the corresponding gross returns for small, medium and large farm in tomato production were Tk. 7087.80, 7473 and 7602 and in cabbage production were Tk. 5752, 6120 and 6800, respectively. Net returns for small, medium and large farm of producing tomato were Tk. 3951.63, 4265.70 and 4561.20 and for cabbage production were Tk. 2596.74, 3065.23 and 3636.18 respectively. Benefit cost ratio of tomato is highest for the large farm (2.50) followed by the medium farm (2.33) and small farm (2.26). In cabbage production, benefit cost ratio is highest for large farm (2.15) followed by the medium farm (2.00) and small farm (1.82). The farmers earned the highest profit from tomato followed by cabbage. The study reported some problems and constraints faced by the farmers during production and marketing of selected homestead vegetables. These problems were: lack of capital, inadequate supply of good quality seeds, unavailability and high prices of insecticides, high prices of fertilizers, inadequate storage facilities, dominance of intermediaries and lack of market information. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations were made to improve practices for selected homestead vegetables production with a view to increase the income and employment opportunities of the farmers

    INFLUENCE OF ELICITORS AND SEED RATE ON ENHANCING GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF BLACK CUMIN (Nigella sativa)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN HORTICULTUREThe experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, during November 2020 to March 2021 to study the influence of elicitors and seed rate on enhancing growth and yield of black cumin (Nigella sativa). The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: different types of elicitors as, T 1 = salicylic acid 50 ppm, T 3 = gibberellic acid 100 ppm, T 4 = pinching and Factor B: different levels of seed rate as, R 1 = 8 kg/ha, R 2 = 10 kg/ha, R 3 = 12 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The collected data were statistically analyzed. Results revealed that in terms of elicitors, the highest seed yield per hector (3.29 t) was recorded from the T 2 (salicylic acid 50 ppm) treatment which is statistically similar with (3.19 t) T 4 (pinching) treatment compared (1.90 t) to T 1 (control) treatment. Again, in terms of different levels of seed rate treatments, the highest seed yield per hector (3.30 t) was found from the treatment R 3 (12 kg/ha seed rate) compared (2.33 t) to R 1 (8 kg/ha seed rate) treatment. In case of combined effect of elicitors and seed rate, the highest seed yield per hector (3.89 t) was found from the of T 2 R 3 (salicylic acid 50 ppm and 12 kg/ha seed rate) treatment combination which is statistically similar (3.64 t) to T 4 R 3 (pinching and 12 kg/ha seed rate) treatment combination and the lowest was obtained from T 1 R 1 (control and 8 kg/ha seed rate) treatment combination. The highest BCR (3.57) was obtain from the treatment combination T 4 R 3 (pinching and 12 kg/ha seed rate) where the lowest BCR (1.83) was found from T 1 R 1 (control and 8 kg/ha seed rate) treatment combination. So, it can be concluded on the basis of economic point of view that the treatment combination T 4 R 3 (pinching and 12 kg/ha seed rate) best and profitable than other treatment combination for black cumin cultivation

    EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND ZINC ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF ONION (BARI Peyaj- 6)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Soil Science Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN SOIL SCIENCEThe research work was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Shere-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the Rabi season of December 2021. The experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of nitrogen and zinc on the growth and yield of onion. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor A: 0 kg/ha (N 0 ), 60 kg/ha (N 1 ), 100 kg/ha (N 2 ), 140 kg/ha (N 3 ) and Factors B: Levels of zinc (3 levels) 0 kg/ha (Zn 0 ), 2 kg/ha (Zn 1 ), 4 kg/ha (Zn 2 ). The two factors experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Results of the experiment revealed that N and Zn significantly influenced yield parameters and yield of BARI Peyaj-6. The nitrogen level of N 3 (140 kg/ha) gave the tallest plant (48.29 cm) while the N 0 (0 kg/ha) treatment gave the shortest plant (43.83 cm). The maximum (8.02) number of leaves, highest leaf length (39.87 cm), highest length of bulb (4.81 cm), highest diameter of the bulb (4.40 cm), maximum stem diameter (1.50 cm), fresh leaf weight (22.82 g), dry leaf weight (11.94 g), maximum (48.70 g) fresh bulb, maximum (3.53 kg/plot) yield, and maximum (17.56 t/ha) total yield also performed by N 3 (140 kg/ha). Among all the growth as well as yield and yield attributing traits Zn 2 (4 kg Zn/ha) performed better than the other treatments. Among different combined treatments, N 3 Zn 2 (140 kg N/ha and 4 Kg Zn/ha) performed the best in respect of all yield and yield contributing characteristics while the lowest value of those parameters was observed in the control treatment combination of N 0 ii Zn 0 (kg N/ha and 0 kg Zn/ha). The combined effect of nitrogen and zinc was also significant in respect of several traits. However, the maximum height (54.32cm) of the plant, the highest (9.85) number of leaves, leaf length (43.17 cm), stem diameter (1.58) of the plant, maximum fresh leaf weight (25.30 g), dry leaf weight (13.56 g, maximum length of bulb (5.23 cm), highest diameter of the bulb (4.81 cm), maximum fresh bulb weight (57.68 g) of the, highest yield (3.96 kg/plot) of the plant, and the maximum total yield (19.78 t/ha) of the plant also found in N 3 Zn 2 (140 kg N/ha and 4 kg Zn/ha) treatment combination. Therefore, it is concluded that the treatment combination N 3 Zn 2 (140 kg N/ha and 4 kg Zn/ha) may be recommended for maximizing the yield of BARI Peyaj-6 at Tejgaon series soil

    EFFECT OF TRANSPLANTING DATE ON YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF T. AMAN RICE VARIETIES

    A Thesis submitted to the Institute of Seed Technology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN SEED TECHNOLOGYA field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to find out the effect of transplanting date on yield and seed quality of T. aman rice varieties. cultivated during aman season (July 2019 to December 2019). The experiment comprised two factors viz, factor A: Variety – 3, i) V 1 = BRRI dhan32, ii) BRRI dhan62 and iii) V 3 = BRRI dhan80; factor B: Date of transplanting – 4, T 1 = 01 July; T 2 = 15 July; T 3 ii = 30 July and T 4 = 15 August. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on different aspects of growth, yield attributes, yield and seed quality of T. aman rice. Results revealed that, BRRI dhan32 gave the highest grain yield (5.01 t ha -1 ) and maximum seed germination percentage (87.06%). This may be attributed to the maximum number of effective tillers hill -1 (14.83), longest panicle (28.64 cm), the highest number of filled grains panicle - 1 (114.16), highest 1000-grain weight (23.84 g) and highest vigor index (2067.54) in this variety. Out of 4 dates of transplanting treatment, T 3 (Transplanting on 30 July) produced the highest grain yield (5.23 t ha -1 ) and maximum seed germination percentage (90.95%). This treatment also showed the maximum number of effective tillers hill -1 (14.99), longest panicle (28.35 cm), the maximum number of filled grains plant -1 (119.59), highest weight of 1000-seed (24.23 g) and highest vigor index (2232.91). Regarding the interaction of variety and date of transplanting, the interaction of V 1 T 3 (BRRI dhan32 when transplanting on 30 July) was the highest yielder (5.82 tha -1 ) among the other interactions which was attributed to higher 1000-seed weight. Besides this, the interaction V 1 T 3 also gave maximum seed germination percentage (92.89%) and highest vigor index (2377.98). Considering the above result, it may be concluded that BRRI dhan32 transplanting on 30 July was found superior in producing the highest yield and best quality seed production

    INFLUENCE OF PLANT DENSITY ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF QUINOA (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.)

The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design (factorial) with three replications having three rows spacing as 30 cm (L 1 ii ), 40 cm (L 2 ) and 50 cm (L 3 ) and four plant spacing as 15 cm (P 1 ), 20 cm (P 2 ), 25 cm (P 3 ) and 30 cm (P 4 ). Data on different growth parameters, yield components and yield were recorded. The collected data were statistically analyzed. Seed yield, straw yield and biological yield were significantly affected by closer row spacing (L 1 ) but plant height, number of branches plant -1 , number of leaves plant -1 , dry weight plant , effective inflorescences plant -1 , ineffective inflorescences plant -1 -1 , seed weight plant , husk weight plant -1 , 1000-seed weight and harvest index were not significantly affected by row spacing. For plant spacing, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index were not significantly affected but all other parameters significantly influenced by plant spacing. Results showed that the highest plant height (67.96 cm at 50 DAS ), number of leaves plant (16.17 at 25 DAS), number of branches plant -1 (1.26, 11.44, 16.00 at 25, 50 and at harvest, respectively), effecetive inflorescences plant -1 -1 (16.13), seed weight plant (11.33 g), dry weight plant -1 (0.17 g at 30 DAS ), ineffective inflorescences plant (1.42), husk weight plant -1 (2.61 g) were recorded from wider spacing of P 3 and lowest ineffective inflorescence plant -1 (0.70) was found from plant spacing of P 4 . Considering interaction effect of row and plant spacing, 1000-seed weight was insignificant but all other parameters were significantly affected where the highest seed yield (2.15 t ha -1 ) and straw yield (1.59 t ha -1 ) was recorded in lower row spacing 30 cm (L 1 ) with 20 cm plant spacing

    INCIDENCE OF INSECT PEST IN BROCCOLI AND THEIR ECOFRIENDLY MANAGEMENT USING NEEM PRODUCTS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Dept. of Entomology Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENTOMOLOGYThe present experiment was conducted to study the incidence of insect pests in broccoli and their eco-friendly management using neem products during November 2019 to February 2020 at the central experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The experiment comprised of seven different treatments (neem oil, neem seed kernel extract, neem seed extract, neem leaf extract, neem bark, extract, neem bark powder and untreated control). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Different treatments expressed significant differences on morphological, physiological parameters, yield attributing traits and yield of broccoli. Among different treatments, neem oil showed the best performance in reducing the number of cabbage worm, diamondback moth, cabbage semi-looper, aphid and flea beetle (1.73 cabbage worm, 1.59 diamondback moth, 1.17 cabbage semi-looper, 1.16 aphid and 0.87 flea beetle, respectively), leaf infestation (15.41%) and plant infestation (33.33%) per five tagged plants and increased plant height, leaf length, leaf breadth, card length, card diameter, card perimeter and yield (42.69 cm, 40.12 cm, 13.76 cm, 22.11 cm, 20.11 cm, 38.23 cm, 16.23 ton ha -1 , respectively) of broccoli. The order of rank of efficacy of the treatments applied against the insect pests of broccoli was T 1 >T 4 >T 2 >T 3 >T 6 >T 5 >T 7 . From the experiment it was revealed that, neam oil is a good botanicals against the insect pests of broccoli which is eco-friendly and non-hazardous to human health

    MORPHOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF Xanthomonas citri CAUSING CITRUS CANKER AND ITS in-vitro CONTROL WITH BOTANICALS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Dept. of Plant Pathology Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN PLANT PATHOLOGY SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021ABSTRACT Xanthomonas citri pv. ctitri (Xcc), causing citrus canker - the most devastating disease of citrus, has been studied through biochemical analysis, morphological characterization and invitro management by selected botanicals. The laboratory works has been done at Central Laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. In biochemical test, the pathogen reacted on Gram Staining and Kovac’s negative but the isolate was positive for KOH. All isolates were found rod shaped, with colony colour ranging from yellow to pale yellow with mucoid surface. Altogether 100 fruits and 300 leaves samples were collected from three markets and four nurseries of Dhaka districts, respectively and pathogenicity of Xanthomonas citri was tested. The isolates showed varied reactions in the symptoms development. In total, eighteen isolates from infected fruits and twenty one isolates from infected leaves were characterized. The isolates viz. Xcc-F-1, Xcc-F-2, Xcc-F-3, Xcc-F-4, Xcc-F-5 and Xcc-F-6 were found highly virulent and produced typical symptoms at the point of inoculation within 13 to 15 days while isolates Xcc-F-1 to Xcc-F-21 developed symptoms within 12 to 15 days in leaves. Six botanical extracts namely, Neem (T 1 ), Tulsi (T 2 ), Ginger (T 3 ), Turmeric (T 4 ), Garlic (T 5 ), and Onion (T 6 ) were evaluated for their efficacy against Xanthomonas citri. Zingiber officinale (Ginger) showed the highest 15.87 ± 0.0 mm and 9.40 ± 0.0 mm diameter inhibition zone against the isolated bacteria in 1:1 (25g) and 1:2 (100g) concentrations, respectively followed by 7.50 ± 0.0 mm diameter recorded in Azadiricta indica in 1:4 concentration. Allium sativum extract showed the lowest 8.0, 6.70 and 5.83 mm diameter of inhibition against the isolated bacteria in all concentrations. The present investigation concludes that there exist pathological and biochemical variations amongst the different isolates of Xanthomonas citri pv. citri and the tested botanicals showed promising performances in control the pathogen in- vitro
