FACTORS INFLUENCING THE LIVING STATUS OF THE TEA GARDEN WORKERS

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMThe objectives of this study were to describe some selected characteristics of the tea
garden workers; to assess the factors influencing the living status of the tea garden
workers. The study was conducted with randomly selected 104 tea garden workers in
Tuker bazar union of Sylhet sadar upazila under Sylhet district. A pre-tested interview
schedule was used to collect data from the respondents during 05 March to 05 April,
2022. Factors influencing the living status of the tea garden workers was the
dependent variable and it was measured by on basis of contribution scores. Factors
influencing the living status of the tea garden workers and the 10 selected
characteristics of the respondents contributed the independent variables of the study.
Regressions analysis was used to examine the contribution of the selected
characteristics of the respondents. The highest proportion (74.04%) of the tea garden
worker had medium contribution as compared to (15.38%) and (10.58%) having low
and high contribution. There is a significant contribution of respondents’ age,
education had negative and annual family income of the respondents had significant
positive contribution with their factors influencing the living status of the tea garden
workers and the rest seven characteristics namely, family size, length of working
experience, number of dependent members, time spending household management,
organizational participation, extension media contact and credit received had no
significant factors influencing the living status of the tea garden workers
INCIDENCE OF INSECT PESTS ON CAULIFLOWER AND THEIR MANAGEMENT

ENTOMOLOGYThe study was conducted in research field of the Department of Entomology, Shere-Bangla
Agricultural
University, Dhaka in order to study the incidence of insect
pests on cauliflower and management of major pests. Five treatments such as
Sevin, Abamectin, Spinosad, Cypermethrin and control were used in this study.
The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD)
with four replications. Eight insect pests such as diamond back moth (Plutella
xylostella L.), cabbage butterfly (Pieris brassicae), tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera
litura Fab.), mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.), flea beetle (Phyllotreta
cruciferae Goeze.), painted bug (Bagrada cruciferarum Kirk.), whitefly (Bemisia
tabaci Genn.) and cabbage aphid (Brevicornye brassicae L.) was found to infest
cauliflower in field of which the former four was frequently observed and the
latter were appeared in traces. Population of diamondback moth, tobacco
caterpillar, cabbage butterfly and aphid were gradually increased with the age of
the crop and the peak population was observed at 45

SW, respectively. In context of controlling insect pests of cauliflower,
the lowest number of diamondback moth caterpillar population (0.42 larvae per
plot), aphid (13.08 aphids per plot), tobacco caterpillar (0.98 larvae per plot) and
cabbage caterpillar population (0.13 larvae per plot) obtained from Spinosad. The
same treatment also gave the highest curd yield (51.48 t ha
-1
) of cauliflower.
Considering pest infestation, curd yield and environmental safety, spinosad may be
used for the management of major insect pests of cauliflower
EFFECT OF ORGANIC NUTRIENT SOURCES ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF KOHLRABI (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes)

treatments. With application of organic nutrient sources the maximum yield per plot was
obtained from N

treatment (3.86 kg) while the minimum yield per plot (2.26 kg) was
obtained from the control treatment N

PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT MEDIA FOR MOTHER CULTURE PRODUCTION OF DIFFERENT MUSHROOM SPP.

HORTICULTUREThe experiment was conducted at Mushroom Development Institute, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during
the period from June, 2019 to May, 2020. The experiment was laid out following completely
randomized design with four replications. Three mushrooms species viz, oyster mushroom, straw
mushroom and button mushroom were grown for mother culture production on three different media
of rice grain, wheat grain and sawdust respectively. All parameters were significantly influenced by
different media with different mushroom variety except length of stalk and diameter of pileus of straw
mushroom. Combined effect of straw mushroom and wheat grain media gave the highest potential
result in mycelium run rate (0.72cm/day), total number of effective fruiting body (72.8), biological
yield (940.10g), economic yield (935.47g), length of stalk (3.20cm), diameter of stalk (1.96cm), and
thickness of pileus (1.68cm). In wheat grain media, button mushroom also gave the highest biological
yield (830.20g). Oyster mushroom, button mushroom and straw mushroom grown separately in three
different media, among these oyster mushroom gave the highest biological yield with rice grain media
which was 144.33g and 140.43g, respectively. In wheat grain media, straw mushroom and button
mushroom gave the highest biological yield which were 940.10g and 830.20g respectively. All the
three mushroom spp. showed lowest biological and economic yield in sawdust media. In case of oyster
mushroom the highest biological efficiency was found in rice grain media 72.2% but straw and button
mushroom, the highest biological efficiency was found in wheat grain media which was 23.5% and
37.7% respectively. The lowest biological efficiency for oyster, straw and button mushroom was found
in sawdust media which were 57.2, 13.7% and 25.2% respectively. According to this result, it was
clearly indicated that oyster mushroom gave higher production in rice grain media, straw and button
mushroom both gave higher production in wheat grain media and it was more economic than other
media substrate

ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF LEAF MINER AND FRUIT BORER IN TOMATO

ENTOMOLOGYThe experiment was conducted under the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural
University, Dhaka in order to assess the efficacy of some promising botanicals
against tomato leaf miner and tomato fruit borer. There were seven treatments and
three replication per treatment used in a randomized complete block design
(RCBD). The treatments were Neem leaf extract, Datura seed extract, Garlic bulb
extract, Mahogany seed extract, Black pepper seed extract, Alamonda leaf extract
and control. In case of leaf infestation by tomato leaf miners, the lowest leaf
infestation (2.08% per plant) during the vegetative stage was obtained from neem
leaf extract and the highest leaf infestation (10.19% per plant) was obtained from
the control treatment (untreated). Similarly during fruiting stage, the lowest miner
induced fruit infestation (3.18% per plot) was obtained from neem leaf extract
whereas; the highest fruit infestation (14.64% per plot) was obtained from the
control treatment (untreated). The lowest number of tomato fruit borer infested
fruits in early, mid and late fruiting stage was 2.67, 5.63 and 4.48 fruits per plot
which are obtained from neem leaf extract. On the other hand, the highest infested
fruits were obtained from control treatment (11.33, 16.28, and 13.55 fruits per plot)
respectively. However, in terms of healthy fruits per plot and weight of healthy fruits
per plot, highest yield was obtained from neem leaf extract in all fruit bearing stages.
Current study will help in botanicals control of tomato leaf miner and tomato fruit
borer in tomato plants
AiSTUDY iON THE ENGAGEMENT OF RURAL WOMEN IN DWELLING AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN SELECTED AREAS iOF DHAMRAI, DHAKA

SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021The study's primary objectives are to ascertain rural women's level of engagement n
household agricultural activities at Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka district, and to analyze the
relationships between selected characteristics of rural women and their level of
engagement n household agricultural activities. The research is being undertaken in
two villages inside the Kulla union, namely Chandrail and Sastapur. Between August
20 and September 20, 2020, data were gathered from 100 rural women utilizing a pretested
interview schedule. To quantify the factors in the investigation, precise scales
were developed. Correlation(s) tests were utilized to identify the relationships
between the independent variables and the study's dependent variable. The findings
indicated that the majority of rural women (73 percent) had a moderate level of
participation in domestic agricultural activities, compared to 20% and 7% who had a
low level of engagement and 7% who had a high level of engagement, respectively.
Correlation analysis revealed that seven of nine independent variables, namely farm
size, family income, cosmopoliteness, extension contact, agricultural training,
knowledge about homestead agricultural activities, and attitude toward dwelling
agricultural activities had a significant positive relationship with rural women's
participation in dwelling agricultural activities. The other two factors, namely the
rural women's age and education level, exhibited no significant link with their
engagement in household agricultural operations. The PCI ranked 'lack of necessary
agricultural land' first, followed by 'lack of adequate fertilizers', 'lack of proper
knowledge', 'lack of proper capital', 'lack of quality seeds', 'lack of extension workers,
'lack of adequate insecticides', 'lack of marketing opportunities, and 'lack of
communication facilities
ADVERSE EFFECT OF FLOOD ON FISH PRODUCTION AS PERCEIVED BY THE FARMERS OF GANGACHARA UPAZILA UNDER RANGPUR DISTRICT

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMBangladesh is frequently cited as one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change specially to
flood. Every year flood affects the farmers of Bangladesh in agriculture and fisheries sectors and
causes a huge economic loss. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the adverse effect of flood on
fish production as perceived by the farmers and to explore the relationship between the selected
characteristics of the fish farmers and their perceived adverse effect on fish production. The study
was conducted at three (3) selected unions (Gajghanta, Morneya and Barabil) of Gangachara
Upazilla which known as severe flood prone areas under Rangpur District. The data were collected
from 103 flood affected fish farmers who were proportionately and randomly selected as the sample
from the three (3) selected unions. The researcher himself collected data by personal contact with the
flood affected fish farmers through a well structured interview schedule during the period from 16
july to 07 August, 2022. The study explored that majority (59.2%) proportion of the fish farmers
perceived medium adverse effect of flood, while 40.8% perceived high adverse effect of flood on
fish production. On the basis of Standardized Adverse Effectiveness Index (SAEI), it was observed
that ‘outbreak of fish diseases due to flood’ ranked 1st followed by ‘destruction of pond/hatchery
dike’, ‘unavailability of fair price’, ‘unavailability of transportation facilities’, ‘pollution of
pond/hatchery water’, ‘unavailability of Labour’, ‘invasion and Penetration of undesirable species
due to flood’, ‘unavailability of storage facilities’, ‘unavailability of inputs’, ‘unavailability of eggs,
larva, fry, fingerling etc.’, ‘unavailability of marketing facilities’, ‘unavailability of necessary
chemicals’ and ‘unavailability of weather information’. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation coefficient
(r) was computed to determine the relationships between the selected characteristics of the
fish farmers and their perceived adverse effect on fish production. The result showed that age,
education, fish farming experience, training received in fish farming, fish farm size, and extension
media contact of the farmers had negative significant relationships with their perceived adverse
effect of flood on fish production. On the basis of the findings it may be concluded that reducing
adverse effect of flood is very essential to regularize fish production during flooding time. Emphasis
should be given to reduce higher order of adverse effects of flood on fish production
IMPACT OF WATER DEFICIT ON MORPHOLOGY AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF HYBRID AND INBRED RICE (Oryza sativa L.) VARIETIES

AGRICULTURAL BOTANYThe pot experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of the Department of Agricultural
Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, during the period from November 2019 to
May 2020 to study the impact of water deficit on morphology and yield attributes of hybrid
and inbred rice varieties. The experiment comprised of two factors viz. Factor A: Variety
(4), V₁ = BRRI dhan92, V₂ = Heera 4, V₃ = Aloron and V₄ = BRRI hybrid dhan5; factor B:
Water deficit (3), T₁ = Control, T₂ = Water deficit at 45–55 days after transplanting
(tillering) and T₃ = Water deficit at 85–95 days after transplanting (flowering). The result
revealed that V₃ (Aloron) exhibited its superiority to other tested variety Heera 4, BRRI
hybrid dhan5 and BRRI dhan92 in terms of seed yield. V₃ (Aloron) out-yielded over V₂
(Heera 4) by 5.08% and V₄ (BRRI hybrid dhan5) by 11.43% higher yield. V₃ (Aloron) also
showed the tallest plant at harvest (91.60 cm), highest SPAD value (40.02), the highest
number of filled grains panicle⁻¹ (157.56), lowest number of unfilled grains panicle⁻¹
(28.08), the highest weight of 1000-grains (25.30 g), higher straw yield (7.56 t ha⁻¹), the
highest biological yield (14.38 t ha⁻¹) and harvest index (47.14%) than other tested varieties
in this experiment. On the other hand, the variety V₁ (BRRI dhan92) returned with 17.18%
lower yield than variety V₃ (Aloron) which was significantly the lowest compared to other
varieties under study. Significant differences existed among different water deficit
treatments with respect to yield and yield attributing parameters of rice. A yield advantages
of 1.81 t ha⁻¹ and 3.63 t ha⁻¹ was observed from T₁ treatment [Control)] over T₂ [ Water
deficit at 45–55 days after transplanting (tillering)] and T₃ [Water deficit at 85–95 days
after transplanting (flowering)] treated pot, respectively. The higher amount of yield from
T₁ treatment was possibly aided by the tallest plant at harvest (91.81 cm), highest number
of tillers hill⁻¹ at harvest (11.68), highest number of leaves hill⁻¹ at harvest (78.73),
maximum leaf area index (4.49), highest SPAD value (46.20), higher number of filled
grains panicle⁻¹ (167.08), lowest number of unfilled grains panicle⁻¹ (28.90), highest
weight of 1000-grains (28.40 g), the highest straw yield (9.23 t ha⁻¹), biological yield
(17.36 t ha⁻¹) and harvest index (46.81%). It was observed that water deficit at flowering
stage (85–95 days after transplanting) could be move detrimental to rice plant than water
deficit at tillering stage (45–55 days after transplanting) and significantly reduced yield
attributes and yield of rice. Among the interaction effects, T

in most of the growth and yield attributing parameters along with grain
yield. Aloron variety seems promising for combating water deficit in rice field and
produces significantly higher yield compared to other varieties
