    EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SOURCES OF NUTRIENTS ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF BEETROOT (Beta vulgaris L.)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN HORTICULTUREA field experiment was accomplished in the Horticulture farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2020 to March, 2021 to study on the effect of different sources of nutrients on the growth and yield of beetroot. The experiment comprised of eleven levels of T 0 ii : N 0 P 0 K 0 + No Organic Manure + No Biochar (Control); T 1 : NPK 100% (RDF)/ha; T 2 : Biochar 10 t/ha; T 3 : Organic Manure 15 t/ha; T 4 : NPK 50% (RDF)/ha + Biochar 10 t/ha; T 5 : NPK 100% (RDF)/ha + Biochar 5 t/ha; T 6 : Organic Manure 7.5 t/ha + Biochar 10 t/ha; T 7 : Organic Manure 15 t/ha + Biochar 5 t/ha; T 8 : NPK 50% (RDF)/ha + Organic Manure 7.5 t/ha; T 9 : NPK 50% (RDF)/ha + Organic Manure 7.5 t/ha + Biochar 5 t/ha and T 10 : NPK 100% (RDF)/ha + Organic Manure 15 t/ha + Biochar 10 t/ha treatments were used in this experiment arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different parameters were taken where all treatments showed significant variations. The maximum yield (41.21 t/ha) was recorded from T 10 (NPK 100% (RDF)/ha + Organic Manure 15 t/ha + Biochar 10 t/ha) and the lowest yield was (21.35 t/ha) obtained from T 0 . The analyses revealed that (NPK 100% (RDF)/ha + Organic Manure 15 t/ha + Biochar 10 t/ha) treatment was the best in terms of net return (8,75,100 Tk.) with a benefit cost ratio of (2.13), it was obvious from the above results that the treatment of (NPK 100% (RDF)/ha + Organic Manure 15 t/ha + Biochar 10 t/ha) was more profitable than rest of treatments

    EFFECT OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF VERMI-COMPOST AND MACRO NUTRIENTS ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF GARLIC (Allium sativum)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HORTICULTUREA field experiment was conducted at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during October 2019 to July 2020 to study the effect of different levels of vermi-compost and macro nutrients on the growth and yield of garlic. Garlic variety ‘BARI Rashun-3’ was used as planting material in this study. The experiment consists of single factor. Twelve treatment combinations were tested in this experiment: T 0 = Control, T vermi-compost, T 2 = 4 t ha -1 vermi-compost, T 3 = 6 t ha -1 1 = 2 t ha vermi-compost, T = 50% NPKS (RDF), T 5 = 100% NPKS (RDF), T 6 = 2 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 50% NPKS (RDF), T 7 = 4 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 50% NPKS (RDF), T vermi-compost + 50% NPKS (RDF), T 9 = 2 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF), T 10 = 4 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF) and T vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 12 treatment combinations having three replications. Data on different growth and yield parameter of garlic were recorded and significant variation was observed for different treatments. Plant height and number of leaves plant -1 value of garlic was recorded to be the maximum from treatment T 10 (4.00 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF)) at different days after sowing (DAS). But, the highest bulb diameter (3.32 cm), the longest clove (3.44 cm), the highest bulb length (2.43 cm), the maximum number of cloves bulb -1 (21.25), the maximum fresh weight of bulb (35.11 g), the maximum dry weight of bulb (4.95 g), the highest fresh clove weight (6.93 g), the maximum dry clove weight (1.89 g), the maximum fresh weight of leaves plant (25.31 g), the maximum dry weight of leaves (3.31 g), the highest bulb yield plot (1.45 kg) and the maximum yield of garlic (14.53 t ha -1 ) was recorded from T11 (6.00 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF) treatment. The highest benefit cost ratio (2.57) was attained from the treatment combination of T vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF)). The second best benefit cost ratio (2.52) was acquired in T 10 (4.0 t ha -1 vermi-compost + 100% NPKS (RDF))

    EFFECT OF POTASSIUM AND PHOSPHORUS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF OKRA IN ROOFTOP AND FIELD

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCEAn experiment was conducted at two locations, the roof of the Biotechnology Department and Agroforestry research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during April 2021 to September 2021 to study the effect of potassium and phosphorus on the growth and yield of okra on rooftop and field. The experiment was conducted in RCBD design with three replications. The MSTAT-C computer package was used for processing and analysis of data. The mean differences were adjusted by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level of significance. Three levels of Potassium K 0 : 0 kg K 2 O ha -1 , K 1 : 50 kg K 2 O ha -1 , K 2 : 80 kg K 2 and three levels of phosphorous P 0 : 0 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 , P 1 : 80 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 , P 2 O ha : 120 kg P 2 were used as treatments in this experiment. The results showed that application of different levels of potassium plus phosphorus, significantly influenced the growth and yield of okra. In both locations, the maximum mean values were recorded from K 2 O ha -1 with 120 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ) treatments whereas the minimum were recorded from K 0 (control). Based on the present results, it can be suggested that the combined use of 80 kg K 2 O ha -1 with 120 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 increased plant growth and yield of okra in both the locations

    YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO (SOLANUM TUBEROSUM L.) AS INFLUENCED BY SPLIT APPLICATION OF NPK AND IRRIGATION

    A Thesis Submitted to The Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYA field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from September-2020 to February-2021, to study the yield and quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) as influenced by fertilizer and irrigation frequency. The experiment consisted of two factors, and followed split plot design with three replications. Factor A. Different fertilizer application frequency (3) viz: F = Split 2 times N and K (50 % basal N and K of RDF + 25% N and K each at 30 and 45 DAP), F = Split 3 times N and K (40 % basal N and K of RDF + 20% N and K each at 30, 45 and 60 DAP) and F = Split 3 times N and K and 2 times P (40 % basal N, K and P of RDF + 20% N and K each at 30, 45 and 60 DAP +60 % P at 30 DAP ) [ Application of recommendation dose of fertilizers according to Fertilizer Recommendation Guide ( FRG),2018 ] were placed in the main plot and Factor B. Different irrigation frequency (3) viz: I 1 3 = Three irrigation (20, 30 and 60 DAP), I = Four irrigation (20, 30, 45 and 60 DAP) and I 3 2 1 = Five irrigation (20, 30, 45, 60 and 75 DAP) were placed in the sub-plot. Among different treatment of fertilizer application frequencies, the F treatment produced the highest tuber yield (21.89 t ha -1 ), specific gravity (1.084 g cm -3 3 ), starch content (13.90 %), as well as the highest yield of graded A (0.40 %) and B (29.56 %) of potatoes. Regarding various irrigation frequencies, the highest tuber yield plant -1 (296.47 g), tuber yield (22.48 t ha -1 ), starch content (13.90 %), highest dry matter content of tuber (19.80 %), and highest graded A (0.53%) and B (30.84 %) type of potato yield were all found in the I 2 treatment. In terms of combination results, the F 3 I treatment combination showed the best results, recording the highest tuber yield (23.50 t ha 2 -1 ), starch content (13.90 %), dry matter content tuber -1 (20.80 %), starch content (14.80 %) and yielding the highest A (0.72 %) and B (32.13%) graded of potatoes. Therefore, it was indicated that cultivation of potato through application of recommendation dose of fertilizer through split 3 times: N, K and 2 times P (F 3 ) combined with four irrigation (20, 30,45 and 60 DAP) (I ) would help to enhanced yield and qualities of potatoes

    EFFICACY OF COMMONLY USED ANTHELMINTICS AND THEIR EFFECT ON BODY WEIGHT OF INDIGENOUS CATTLE AT JHIKARGACHA, JASHORE

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Animal Production and Management, Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ANIMAL SCIENCE Semester: January - June, 2021A coprological investigation was carried out to detect some variable wise prevalence of gastro- intestinal (GI) nematode infection in indigenous cattle and to know the efficacy of some commonly used anthelmintics on them. The faecal samples were collected from 112 indigenous cattle from Jhikargacha Upazilla of Jashore district with a random sampling. The study was conducted February 2020 to January 2021. Faecal sample examination of all the selected cattle showed that 29.44% (33) animals were affected with single type of GI nematode. Among them, Toxocara vitulorum is highly prevelant with a prevalence of 9.82%. Other species, namely Trichuris trichiura, Bunostomum phlebotomum, Haemonchus contortus and Strongyloides papillosus are also found significantly. Mixed infections were observed in 8.03% cattle where two or more species of nematodes are noticed. The prevalence of gastro-intestinal helminths was significantly higher in young cattle (50%) than adult (22.5%) cattle. About 33.33% male and 26.86% female cattle were infected with at least one type of gastro-intestinal nematode infestation. Both mixed and single infection was significantly higher in male cattle than those of female cattle. During summer season, prevalence is found higher (35.71%) than winter (20.51%) and rainy season (32.26%). Extensive rearing system is identified as more prevalent (34.78%) in gastro-intestnal nematodiasis than intensive (25.0%) and semi-intensive rearing system (26.31%). Cachectic animals having body condition score 1, are highly prevalent (33.33%) than others. The efficacy of Pipervet® and Almex® against Ascaris infection of were found 100% and 80% respectively whereas Levavet® and LTvet® were found 100% and 90.91% effective against single type of infection with Trichuris trichiura, Bunostomum phlebotomum, Haemonchus contortus and Strongyloides papillosus. The efficacy of Levavet® and LTvet® against mixed infection were 100% and 83.3% respectively . Using Pipervet®, Almex®, LTvet® and Levavet® body weight was gained after 1 month 8.88%, 10.41%, 6.57%, 6.17% respectively. These differences were not statistically significant

    PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF DATE PALM MOLASSES COMMERCIALIZATION IN SELECTED PLACES OF JASHORE, BANGLADESH

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agribusiness Management, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTUTAL STATISTICSThe objectives of this paper were to explore socio-economic profile and measure profitability analysis of date palm molasses producing households. Primary data collection was carried out at three upazila of Jashore district along with fifteen key queries. This research was based on field data purveyed from 75 households following purposive sampling technique. Cobb-Douglas production function was applied to determine the effects of premediated cost factors on molasses commercialization. Tapping tree contract, earthen sap pot, labor wage, firewood and marketing cost factors had significant impact on molasses turnover. Large scale production (BCR 2.21) was explored more profitable than marginal scale (BCR 1.88). The average market prices were attained BDT 232.93/kg (large scale) and BDT 219.90/kg (marginal scale). Almost 98% respondents privileged with nutritious food intake and had over 80% significant impact on livelihood and societal security. Finally, some perplexities were distinguished including adultrated molasses presence in market, lack of efficient artisans, theft plausibility and quality date palm saps shortage along with compatible suggestions to reincarnate such signature

    PROFITABILITY AND WOMEN EMPOWERMENT OF PABDA FISH PRODUCTION IN MYMENSINGH DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

It is necessary to increase fish production and more participation of women eventually increases fish production. The main objective of the present study was profitability and women empowerment of Pabda fish production in Bangladesh. Data were collected from 100 Pabda fish farmers in two villages namely, Koltapara and Ramgopalpur villages of Gouripur Upazilla under Mymensingh district where an adequate amount of Pabda farms were available. Data were collected by using a pre-tested interview schedule. The study found that gross return was Tk 2265088.73/hectare, net return Tk 988425.11 /hectare, gross margin was Tk 1110491.20 /hectare. BCR based on variable cost was 1.96, and BCR based on total cost was 1.77 which indicated that Pabda fish production was profitable in the study area. The study found that fingerling cost, salt and lime cost, feed cost, medicine cost, and water pumping cost had a significant impact on Pabda fish production. Production efficiency of Pabda fish was 96 percent. The study found that farmers wives involved in different agricultural activities including Pabda fish production. Women in Pabda fish farming still need to be empowered more and trained to enhance their capabilities and involved in Pabda fish system production. In this study number of problems were also identified which were classified as technical problems, economic problems, and social problems during Pabda fish farming. Some policy recommendations were also given at the end of the study which will be helpful to the Pabda fish

    MARKETING SYSTEM OF EGG IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF TANGAIL DISTRICT

Three villages from Gopalpur Upazila and two villages from Ghatail Upazila were selected for this study. In total, 52 egg producers were selected purposively for the study. Out of 52 samples, 32 were from Gopalpur Upazila and 20 were from Ghatail Upazila. Primary data were collected during March to June, 2022 through field visits. The required data were collected through structured interview schedule from the 52 egg producers. The secondary information sources were DLS reports, BLRI reports, Bangladesh economic review, BBS, different journals, newspaper, relevant websites etc. Descriptive statistics and Profit equation were used to address the main objectives of the study. The results of the study showed that, per 100 layers, average total cost for egg production was Tk. 1,98,966.98. Per 100 layers gross return from egg production was estimated Tk. 2,85,165.8 and per 100 layers average net return of egg production was Tk. 86198.82. The study considered land use cost, housing cost, equipment cost, feed cost, day old chick cost, transportation cost, maintenance cost, veterinary cost, electricity cost and miscellaneous cost. The study identified the exiting marketing channels in the study area. The study also identified that egg producers were facing some problems such as: price of poultry feed and feed materials, high price of veterinary drugs, lack of government support, lack of information in layer farming system etc. If these problems could be solved within the shortest possible time, all the egg producers could be able to earn a much higher profit than the existing level. On the basis of findings, some recommendations were made for the development of egg production and marketing in Bangladesh

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUSTARD AS AFFECTED BY VERMICOMPOST WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF FERTILIZER

    A Thesis Submitted to The Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYThe experiment was conducted at the Agronomy farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh to find out the growth and yield of mustard as affected by vermicompost with different levels of fertilizer during the period from November 2021 to March 2022. Two factors experiment was laid out in Split Plot Design with three replications. Three mustard varieties viz. V 1 ii (BARI sarisha-14), V 2 (BARI sarisha-16) and V 3 (BARI sarisha-18) in association with four treatments of inorganic fertilizers with or without vermicompost viz. control treatment T 0 (RDF), T 1 (RDF + vermicompost 2.5 t ha -1 ), T 2 (75% RDF + vermicompost 2.5 t ha -1 ) and T 3 (50% RDF + vermicompost 2.5 t ha -1 ) were considered for the present study. Among three varieties, V 3 (BARI sarisha-18) showed best performance for most of the parameters and gave the highest shoot fresh weight plant -1 , shoot dry weight plant , SPAD value, siliqua length, number siliqua plant -1 , 1000-seed weight, seed yield, stover yield and harvest index compared to V 1 (BARI sarisha-14) and V 2 (BARI sarisha-16). However, among the different treatments applied to mustard, T 1 (RDF + vermicompost 2.5 t ha -1 ) showed best results on different growth yield contributing parameters and yield of mustard and gave the highest plant height, number of leaves plant -1 , shoot fresh weight plant -1 , shoot dry weight plant -1 , SPAD value, siliqua length, number of siliqua plant -1 , number of seeds siliqua -1 , 1000-seed weight, seed yield, stover yield and harvest index compared to other treatments. Regarding treatment combination of variety and inorganic fertilizer with vermicompost, V 3 showed the best performance on different growth, yield and yield contributing parameters in comparison to other treatment combinations. The maximum shoot fresh weight plant -1 (354.30 g), shoot dry weight plant -1 (39.61 g), siliqua length (8.39 cm), number of siliqua plant -1 (154.30), 1000-seed weight (4.55 g), seed yield (2480.00 kg ha -1 ), stover yield (2813.00 kg ha -1 ) and harvest index (46.80%) were obtained from the treatment combination of V 3 T 1 whereas the lowest was from the treatment combination of V 1 T 3 . So, it can be concluded that the application of (RDF + vermicompost 2.5 t ha -1 ) to the variety BARI sarisha-18 can be considered to achieve higher mustard yield

    GROWTH AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF STEM AMARANTH UNDER MORINGA BASED AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM

IN AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCEA field experiment was conducted at the Agroforestry research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Dhaka, to evaluation of the growth and yield performance of stem amaranth (Amaranthus lividus) under moringa (Moringa oliefera) based Agroforestry system during the period from January 2020 to April 2020. The experiment was consisted of six treatments viz; T 1 = 25 cm distance from the tree base, T 2 = 50 cm distance from the tree base, T 3 = 75 cm distance from the tree base, T 4 =100 cm distance from the tree base, T 5 =125 cm distance from the tree base and T 6 = Open field referred to as control (Sole crop) treatment which were arranged by following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data on different parameters were collected for assessing the results of this experiment and showed significant variation in respect of growth and yield of amaranth due to the effect of different treatments. In M. oleifera and A. lividus based agroforestry system, M. oleifera suppressed crop growth and productivity of A. lividus at closer distance from the tree row. Increasing distance from the M. oleifera trees gradually increasing the growth and yield characteristics of stem amaranth. Among different M. oleifera and A. lividus interactions, the highest yield (26.30 t ha -1 ) of A. lividus was obtained in T 5 (125 cm distance from the tree base) treatment comparable to others treatments. The crop (A. lividus) growth and yield decreased under M. oleifera tree but due to the presence of M. oleifera tree economical returns obtained from M. oleifera and A. lividus based agroforestry system was higher than sole cropping. In moringa amaranth interaction, the highest gross return (613700 Tk), net return (548034 Tk) and benefit cost ratio (9.35) were observed in T 5 (125 cm distance from the tree base) treatment and on the other hand the lowest gross return (314800), net return (264648), and benefit cost ratio (6.28) was observed in sole cropping
