MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGY AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.) VARIETIES AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT LEVELS OF LIGHT INTENSITY

A pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-
1207, during the months of October 2019 to mid-April 2020 in a completely
randomized design (CRD) to determine the effect of low light on morpho-physiology
and yield of tomato. Three tomato varieties viz. BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15,
BARI Tomato-16 were exposed to four light intensities including 100% (S
0
, control),
75% (S
1
) , 50%
(S
2
)
,
and 25% (S
3
) to evaluate their performances. Light stress
(mainly S
2
and S
3
) substantially hampered the plant growth, development as well as
yield. Low light stress primarily reduced the photosynthetic performance of plants
which contributes in reduction of plant height, number of primary branches, and
leaves of all tomato plants. Moreover, low light intensity negatively affected the
fresh and dry weight of tomato. It also decreased the number of fruits, fruit length,
fruit diameter, and individual fruit weight in all varieties. As a result, plant wise
tomato production was hampered seriously with low yield. In comparison with
control, S
1
condition decreased tomato yield per plant by 22.5, 16.9 and 15.3% in
BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15 and BARI Tomato-16, respectively. Under S
2
condition, tomato yield per plant decreased by 38.7, 37.4, and 32.7% in BARI
Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15 and BARI Tomato-16, respectively, in contrast to
control. Lastly, S
3
condition decreased tomato yield per plant by 73.1, 67.0 and
62.1% in BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-15, and BARI Tomato-16, respectively,
compared with control. From this result, it was clear that BARI Tomato-16 was more
tolerant to low light stress than BARI Tomato-2 and BARI Tomato-15
MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION, GENETIC VARIABILITY AND PHENOTYPIC DIVERSITY ANALYSIS IN BRINJAL (Solanum melongena L.) GENOTYPES

SEMESTER: JULY-DECEMBER, 2021A field experiment was conducted to evaluate twenty brinjal genotypes by calculate thesignificance of variation, heritability, genetic advance, correlation, path coefficient andgenetic diversity for thirteen yield contributing characters. The experiment was
executed following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with threereplications at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, from August 2019 to
March 2020. In this experiment, significant differences were exhibited among the
existing genotypes for all characters. Higher Phenotypic Co-efficient of Variation(PCV) than the Genotypic Co-efficient of Variation (GCV) were observed for allcharacters. Highest PCV (59.24) and GCV (58.58) were observed for % of infestedfruit. harvesting which indicating selection on the basis of phenotype would beeffective. At genotypic level, number of primary brunches per plant (0.355), number ofsecondary brunches per plant (0.356), and fruit diameter (0.494) exhibited highlysignificant and positive correlation with yield per plant. Path analysis revealed that thenumber of flowers per plant (2.616) had the maximum positive and direct effect onyield per plant. Through genetic diversity, 20 brinjal genotypes were grouped into fourcluster. The cluster I containing the maximum number of genotypes (7) followed byCluster II (6), IV (4), and III (3). Maximum intra-cluster distance was exhibited bycluster I (1.74), whereas the highest value for inter-cluster distance was observedbetween Cluster I and Cluster III (32.04). Mean performance of cluster showed thehighest yield per plant (1.62) value in cluster IV. Therefore, considering the magnitudeof genetic distance, contribution of character towards divergence, magnitude of cluster
mean performance and agronomic performance the genotype G8 (Ventura), G15 (Bt),and G17 (Kustia 2) from cluster I, G12 (Pirgonj) from cluster III, and G16 (Avo round)along with G18 (Altapon) from cluster IV would be considered as better parents forfuture hybridization programs

DETERMINANTS OF PESTICIDE USE AND RISK PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOUR IN BRINJAL PRODUCTION

AGRICULTURAL STATISTICSFarmers are working extremely hard to boost crop yields by using more pesticides and
fertilizer as a result of the rising global demand for food and the shrinking amount of
arable land. But using pesticides in agriculture has had unfavorable repercussions on
the environment and human health. The study was conducted to examine the
determinants of pesticide use and risk protective behaviour in brinjal production in
some selected areas of Bogura district in Bangladesh. Besides, attempt had given to
describe the socio-economic characteristics of the brinjal farmers, to identify the factors
that significantly influence farmers use of pesticides in brinjal production, to compare
the use of pesticides among brinjal farmers and investigate the comparison of risk
protective behaviour among brinjal farmers. Two upazilas called Shibganj and
Shahjahanpur under the Bogura districts was selected purposively for the study on the
basis of extensive brinjal production. Simple sampling procedure was used to select a
sample of 102 respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Multiple
linear regression coefficients of contributing determinants related to the determinants
of pesticide use in brinjal. Results indicated that safety behaviors in pesticide use were
inadequate, particularly in majority of the farmers were overusing insecticides,
fungicides and herbicide. The majority of the farmers (40) did not use mask as a result
of low education levels, high cost and low availability. Due to their low levels of
education, high costs, and lack of access, the majority of farmers (34) did not know
about pesticide toxicity. Findings from the Multiple linear regression coefficients model
estimation indicated that use of NPK and plot size are significant at 1% level and
experience, highest education level of the family and family size are significant at 5%
level and significantly influenced the amount of pesticide usage. In order to allow
correct pesticide usage for improved livelihoods and environmental protection, the
study advised the implementation of risk protective measures, safety training programs
and suitable extension services. In terms of public policy, developing and executing
targeted interventions aiming at encouraging the limit of detrimental consequences of
excessive pesticide use on human health and the environment
ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATION IN VEGETABLES FIELD OF BOGURA DISTRICT: OVERVIEW OF POLLUTION INDICES AND RISK ASSESSMENT

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRYThe current study focused on quantifying hazardous heavy metals (Pb. Cu, and Cr)
in soil-vegetables (potato, tomato, pepper, cauliflower, and cabbage) systems in
different Upazilla of Bogura district in Bangladesh to assess their effect on human
health and the environment. The instrumental detection method was validated
according to linearity, determination co-efficient, limit of detection (LOD), limit of
quantification (LOQ), accuracy, and precision. All the vegetables and their field soil
had Cu concentrations lower than the maximum permissible limit set by BFSA,
FAO/WHO. The concentration of Cr and Pb in vegetables exceeded the maximum
allowable limit, but their field soil in different Upazilla of Bogura District did not
exceed the maximum allowable limit as per FAO/WHO. For contamination factor
(CF), only Pb severely contaminated the vegetables (CF>6). The contamination
degree (CD) data also showed that all vegetables had severe contamination. The
pollution load index (PLI) results indicated vegetable field soil of Kahaloo, and
Bogura Sadar had the highest PLI, while the vegetables produced in Nandigram and
Dupchanchia had the lowest PLI. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) values were
found ˂1 in all vegetables for Cu, Cr, and Pb indicating trace metal transfer from
field soil to consumable parts. Furthermore, the potential ecological risk factor (ERi)
by single metal and risk index (PERI) results revealed lower ecological risks in
vegetable fields. Health risk assessment showed that all vegetable samples were
unsafe for human consumption as the carcinogenic health risk (CHR˃10
) and noncarcinogenic
health risk (HI ˃1) quotients seem more than the safe level in all
vegetable samples. Findings show that heavy metal concentrations were high in
vegetable fields endangering the environment and consumer health. Actions should
be taken to reduce heavy metal pollution in the vegetable fields of different Upazilla
of Bogura district to protect the environment and the consumer's health
ASSESSMENT OF POULTRY FEATHER WASTE AS A FEED INGREDIENT FOR ANIMAL FEED AND ITS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY: A CASE STUDY ON NORTH DAHAK CITY

SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021As the demand of chicken consumption is high and rising, the amount of poultry market
waste is also increasing by multiple times, which creates an alarming situation of polluting
environment. By processing this waste into feather meal and poultry waste meal,
manufacturers can contribute to meet the demand of protein for feed production and
establishing a pricing structure. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the present
scenario of poultry feather waste, how to use it as an animal feed ingredient and its
business opportunity. A survey was conducted in the 21 randomly selected poultry markets
of Dhaka North City Corporation. Samples of feather and poultry waste were collected for
laboratory analysis. The results found that in general in each shop producing 100 kg
poultry wastes among which 2 kg is feather waste. It was estimated that Dhaka North City
producing 473.7 tons of poultry waste among which 8.7 tons are feather, that are discarded
as waste (survey data). Simplified processing techniques for feather meal has been
developed. It was observed that 1 kilogram of feather waste can produce about 500 grams
of product, presenting a considerable economic opportunity in comparison to other feed
ingredients. Furthermore, the generated product has a high nutritional value while having
no negative environmental impact. Proximate analysis showed that the final product
contained Moisture 11.25%, Crude Protein 86.53%, Total Ash 7.31%, Crude fiber 0.73%,
Crude Fat 5.03%. The total cost of producing per kilogram of feather meal is about 28
BDT which is much lower than present market price (60 BDT). There is opportunity to
create yearly 1 million US$ business from the wasted feather in Dhaka city. Thus, using
market waste for feather meal production could be a new opportunity to convert waste into
resource and significant contribute to economy of the country significan
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES OF LIVESTOCK POPULATION AT MIRZAPUR UPAZILA IN TANGAIL BANGLADESH

processing nee straw to feed their animals. Overall prevalence of GP infestation was 76%. Prevalence of
Paramphistomum spp. infestation was found to be the highest (24%) followed by Fasciola spp, 16%.

The findings of this study provide an epidemiological forecast showing the prevalence of gastrointestinal

FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF TOMATO CULTIVATION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF MYMENSINGH DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSThe study was focused on the profitability of production, the contribution of factors in
yield and the socio-economic status of the tomato growers at Mymensingh Sadar and
Gauripur Upazilla under the Mymensingh district. Using a simple random sampling
technique, 90 tomato cultivators were selected to conduct farm-level surveys with the
pre-tested questionnaires. The per acre cost of tomato production was Tk.33751 for all
farm categories in the study area. Total cost was highest for the small farms (Tk.35313)
followed by the large farm (Tk.33083) and medium farms (Tk.32857). Per acre gross
return of tomato cultivation under small, medium and large farms were Tk.61920,
Tk.59520 and Tk.59040 respectively, indicating that the per acre gross return of small
farms was higher than large and medium farms. Per acre benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of
tomato cultivation under small, medium and large farms were 1.75, 1.81 and 1.78
respectively where medium farms gave the best performance. Resource use efficiency
indicated that all of the resources were underused except overutilization of human labor,
TSP and MoP. In the study area. High wages of labor and insect and disease attacks
were significant issues for tomato cultivation
FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS AND ESTIMATING THE PRODUCTIVITY OF BEAN PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF MYMENSINGH DISTRICT

AGRICULTURAL STATISTICSLeguminous crops like beans play a vital role to meet up our protein requirement. Beans
contain 20-30% protein on a dry weight basis which is nearly three times than that in
most cereals. Among all the leguminous crops, beans are very popular and nutritious
vegetables in Bangladesh. Beans provide a good amount of protein in addition to vitamins
and minerals. In Bangladesh total land area under bean cultivation is 15385 hectares and
the production is 83,000 metric tons during 2006-2007(BBS, 2008). There is a great
demand of bean seeds in the overseas market which may open a new horizon of export of
this vegetables in those markets. The present study was conducted to estimate the farm
productivity of bean production in Muktagacha and Fulbaria Upazila of Mymensingh
district of Bangladesh. Three villages from each Upazila were specially selected for this
study. In total, 80 bean farmers were selected specially for the study. Out of 80 samples,
40 were from Muktagacha Upazilla and 40 were from Fulbaria Upazila. Primary data
were collected during September to October of 2021 through field visit. The required data
were collected through structured interview schedule from the 80 jute farmers. The
secondary information sources were DAE reports, Bangladesh economic review, BBS,
different journals, newspaper, relevant websites etc. Descriptive statistics and CobbDouglas
production
function
model
were
used
to
address
the
main
objectives
of
the
study.
The
results of the study showed that, per hectare average total cost for producing bean
was Tk. 32402.38. Per hectare gross returns above cash cost from bean production was
estimated Tk. 99302.06 and per hectare average net return of bean production was Tk.
66899.68. It was also expressed that net return was higher at Fulbaria upazila. The study
considered human labor cost, tillage cost, seed cost, fertilizer cost, irrigation cost, and
pesticides cost, these six variables. The study showed that seed cost and fertilizers cost
had significant impact on bean production. The study also marked out that bean producers
were facing some problems such as: low price of bean, high labor cost, unavailability of
human labor, farmers not keeping any records of bean production etc. If these problems
could be solved within the shortest possible time, all the bean producers could be able to
earn a much higher profit than the existing level. On the basis of findings, some
recommendations were made for the development of bean sector in Bangladesh

recorded. Statistically significant variation was recorded from all recorded
characters due to the different levels of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Seedling
age showed significant differences in all recorded characters. Seedling age and
different levels of NAA influenced significantly on most of the parameters.
