    EFFECT OF POTASSIUM SOURCES AND BIOCHAR LEVELS ON THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYA field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from November, 2019 to March, 2020 in Rabi season to find out the response of different source of potassium fertilizer and different biochar levels on growth, yield and quality of potato. The experiment had two factors. factor a: potassium: 3 sources; K₁: Muriate of potash (MoP or KCl), K₂: Potassium phosphate (KH₂PO₄) and K₃: Potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄) and factor B: Biochar: 4 levels; B₁: 1.25 t ha⁻¹, B₂: 2.50 t ha⁻¹, B₃: 3.75 t ha⁻¹ and B₄: 5.00 t ha⁻¹. The potato variety was BARI Alu-29 (Courage). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. Total 36 plots were made for the experiment with 12 treatments. Source of potassium fertilizer and/or biochar showed significant effect on different morphological, yield and qualitative characters of potato. The maximum number of tubers hill⁻¹ (7.44), the maximum weight of tubers hill⁻¹ (266.37 g), the highest tuber yield (26.64 t ha⁻¹), the maximum marketable yield (19.07 t ha⁻¹) and the highest specific gravity of tuber were recorded (1.058 g cm⁻³), the maximum tuber dry matter (21.73%) and the highest starch content on potato (16.77 mg g⁻¹ FW) were recorded from B 4 (5.00 t ha⁻¹) treatment. In 36 treatment of combinations, the maximum weight of tuber hill⁻¹ (286.00 g), the highest tuber yield (28.60 t ha⁻¹) and the maximum marketable yield (20.48 t ha⁻¹) were observed in KH 2 ii PO 4 and 5.00 t ha⁻¹ biochar (K 2 B 4 ) treatment combination. Application of KH 2 PO 4 as the source of potassium fertilizer with 5.00 t ha −1 of biochar combination seemed to be more suitable for getting higher yield. But when considering quality attributes, the combination of Potassium sulphate with 5.00 t ha −1 biochar exhibited highest dry matter content (22.67%), maximum starch content (17.50 mg/g FW), whereas, minimum TSS and reducing sugar content. It is concluded that the application of Potassium phosphate (452.19 kg KH₂PO₄ ha −1 ) and 5.00 t ha of biochar is suitable for higher yield and the application of Potassium sulphate (288.60 kg K₂SO₄ ha −1 ) and 5.00 t ha −1 biochar is applied for good quality potato

    ROOTING FROM DIFFERENT PORTION OF STEM CUTTING OF CROTON (Codiaeum variegatum) USING DIFFERENT PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN HORTICULTURETwo field experiments were conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from March-2019 to February- (both Kharif and Rabi seasons) to study the rooting from different portion of stem cutting of croton (Codiaeum variegatum) using different plant growth regulators. The experiment consisted of two factors, and followed Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with three replications. Factor A. Different portion of stem cuttings denoted as C:C =basal portion of the stem, C 2 =middle portion of the stem, C =top portion of the stem, and factor B: Plant growth regulators denoted as S:S ii 0 3 =control, S =IBA (indole-3-butyric acid) @500 ppm and S 2 1 = NAA (1-naphthaleneacetic acid)@1000 ppm. All of the studied parameters were significantly influenced by different cutting positions. The C portion of stem cuttings had the highest sprouting percentage (98.22 and 95.78%), roots per cutting (8.44 and 4.47), root lengths (5.03 and 2.73 cm), and shoot lengths (11.59 and 8.84 cm) in both Kharif and Rabi seasons, while C portion of stem cutting had the lowest performance of the aforesaid parameters. In the case of different plant growth regulators, S treatment had the highest sprouting percentages (90.22 and 85.78%), roots per cutting (7.40 and 3.91), root length (4.93 and 2.67 cm), and shoot length (11.44 cm) among the various plant growth regulators applied in both Kharif and Rabi seasons. Therefore, it may be concluded that C S treatment was better than all other treatments recording the maximum values of various attributes related to the shoot and root growth parameters of croton cuttings during both Kharif and Rabi seasons

    OCCURRENCE AND ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY PROFILING OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS ISOLATED FROM RAW CHEVON

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN MICROBIOLOGYThis study aimed to determine the prevalence as well as the antibiotic sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus in market meat (chevon) sold at the different wet markets in Dhaka city. A total of 120 samples of raw chevon were collected from the selected area. S. aureus was isolated from the samples using standard microbiological methods with their Total Viable Count (TVC). The highest TVC found on a sample was log 10 9.22 CFU/gm and the lowest TVC was log 10 9.04 CFU/gm. Cultural characteristics, biochemical testing, and gram staining were used to isolate and identify bacteria. Prevalence rate of S. aureus ware 47.5%. Isolates were investigated for antibiotic sensitivity profiling by using a Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion assay against five commonly used antibiotics used in goats. S. aureus showed the highest sensitivity to gentamycin (57.9%), followed by ciprofloxacin (56.14%), and the highest resistance pattern was shown against amoxicillin (100%), followed by ampicillin (92.98%), and tetracycline (63.15%). According to the findings of this study, chevon contains multidrug-resistant S. aureus pathogens on market meat. The presence of multidrug-resistant S. aureus bacteria in market meat raises serious public health concerns, which can be transmitted to humans through direct contact or the food chain, posing a public health risk

    USE OF MODERN IRRIGATION TECHNIQUES BY THE FARMERS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMThe purposes of the study were to describe the selected characteristics of the farmers; to determine the extent of farmers’ use of modern irrigation technique and to explore the contribution among each of the selected characteristics of farmers with their use of modern irrigation techniques. The study was undertaken purposively in Kishoreganj Upazila under Nilphamari District. Validated and well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 101 respondents during 1st July, 2021 and completed in 30 July, 2021. Descriptive statistics, multiple regressions were used for analysis. The majority (65.34 percent) of the farmers had medium use of modern irrigation techniques compared to having 26.23 percent high and 7.92 percent had low use of modern irrigation techniques. Among 11 selected characteristics of the farmers three characteristics namely- education, training received and knowledge on agricultural irrigation of the respondents had significant positive contribution with their use of modern irrigation techniques but problem faced by the farmers in using modern irrigation techniques of the respondents had significant negative contribution with their use of modern irrigation techniques. The rest 7 characteristics namely, age, family size, farm size, annual family income, farming experience, agricultural extension media contact and attitude towards using modern irrigation techniques had no significant contribution with their use of modern irrigation techniques. Almost half of the farmers (48.51%) were illiterate to primary level education. Finding leads to conclude that, if suitable steps are taken to improve education level of the farmers, an appreciable proportion of the farmers will be encouraged to use of modern irrigation techniques. Increase in training facilities to develop modern irrigation techniques will minimize farmer’s problems. If the farmers gain more knowledge on modern irrigation, they will face less problems in use of modern irrigation techniques

    FACTORS AFFECTING ADOPTION OF FARM MECHANIZATION IN RICE FARMING IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH

The sustainable growth of the agricultural sector critically depends on the adoption of improved, scale-appropriate and ecofriendly technologies which includes using scale-appropriate new agricultural machinery. The specific objective of the systemic study was to assess the socioeconomic profile of the rice farmers, to identify the factors affecting the adoption of farm mechanization for rice cultivation and to identify the constrains of adopting farm mechanization. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection from adopters and non-adopters of farm mechanization from the rice cultivators of several villages of Homna and Meghna upazila in Cumilla district. To understand the factors affecting farm mechanization, econometric models like logistic regression technique was used. Results from the study shows that majority of individuals were between the ages of 50 and 59 which is 33 percent of the population, among the population the bulk of farmers in each upazila have a 1-5 years of education who are 60 percent of the respondents. About 31 percent of the respondents got training where 69 percent didn’t and altogether 23 percent of the respondents had membership of different social and agricultural groups. A significant number (60 percent) of respondents had a medium experience level in case of adopter category. in case of non-adopter category 63.34 percent of respondents had a high experience level. On an average, about 48 percent of the respondents recieved extension contact when 52 percent did not. About 67 percent of the respondents had allowed women members in rice field from when 33 percent were not. Among the variables taken for estimating the adoption of farm mechanization, the most affecting and significant factors were education, farmer’s training and field visit by the extension workers. Poor buying capacity and lack of training act as major constraints which can be solved by proper financing and training programs

    IMPROVEMENT OF YIELD AND AROMATIC QUALITY OF FRAGRANT RICE THROUGH SUPPLEMENTATION OF POTASSIUM AND SULPHUR

    A Thesis Submitted to the Institute Of Seed Technology Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE(MS) IN SEED TECHNOLOGYA field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), during July to December, 2019 with a view to finding out improvement of yield and aromatic quality of fragrant rice through supplementation of potassium and sulphur in Aman season. The experimental treatments included two T. aman rice varieties viz., BRRI Dhan 80 and BRRI Dhan 34 , three levels of potassium viz., K ii 1 = 60 kg MoP ha -1 , K 2 = 65 kg MoP ha , K 3 = 70 kg MoP ha -1 and three levels of sulphur viz., S 1 = 45 kg Gypsum ha = 50 kg Gypsum ha -1 , S 3 = 55 kg Gypsum ha -1 . The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications. There were 18 treatments combinations. The total numbers of unit plots were 54. Results showed that rice varieties differed significantly in all growth characters and BRRI Dhan 80 produced higher grain yield (4.39 t ha gave the highest grain yield (4.30 t ha -1 -1 ).Among the review, the 65 kg MoP ha ). Increase of K level 50 kg Gypsum ha performed well in growth and gave higher grain yield (4.35t ha ). Interaction results showed that significantly higher grain yields were given by transplanting BRRI Dhan 80 with 65 kg MoP ha -1 (4.71 t ha -1 ),Combination with the application of 50 kg Gypsum ha -1 -1 in BRRI Dhan 80 (4.51t ha ). The maximum grain yield (5.04 t ha -1 ) was obtained from the combination of BRRI Dhan 80 with 65 kg MoP ha -1 and 50 kg Gypsum ha -1 .The higher grain yield was attributed mainly to the number of effective tillers hill -1 -1 -1 , filled grains panicle and 1000-grain weight. Protein content(8.55%) and grain 2-AP content( 1.02 µg g -1 ) was found from the combination of BRRI Dhan 80 with 65 kg MoP ha and 50 kg Gypsum ha -1 . It may be concluded that the application of 65 kg MoP ha -1 and 50 kg Gypsum ha -1 along with recommended dose of other fertilizers may be use for producing good quality aromatic rice

    EFFECT OF INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF BROCCOLI (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica)

The experiment consisted of eight treatments viz. T 1 =control, T 2 =recommended fertilizer dose (RFD), T =80% RFD + 20% RFD supplemental vermicompost (VC), T 4 II =60% RFD + 40% RFD as VC, T =50% RFD + 50% RFD as VC, T 6 =40% RFD + 60% RFD as VC, T =20% RFD + 80% RFD as VC, T 8 7 =only vermicompost. BRRI broccoli-1 was used as a test crop for the experiment. The experiment was laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that the highest plant height (44.02cm, 61.25cm and 69.71cm) of broccoli at 40, 60 DAT and at harvest, number of leaves (6.50, 12.01, 17.93 and 23.03) at 20, 40, 60 DAT and at harvest, leaf length (50.10 cm), leaf breadth (21.89 cm), stem length (28.10 cm), stem diameter (3.78 cm), the highest primary curd weight (396.82 g), numbers of secondary curds (3.87), secondary curd weight (68.58 g) and yield (15.95 t/ha) were recorded from T 3 treatment. The lowest results on the respected parameters were found from T (No fertilizer; control). The highest value of the N, P and K content in post-harvest soil was obtained from treatment T 3 and T 1 (No fertilizer; control) treated soil showed the lowest

    INDUCTION OF DROUGHT TOLERANCE IN WHEAT THROUGH NUTRIENT AND HYDRO PRIMING

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYThe experiment was conducted under the laboratory condition of the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka from August 2019 to July 2020 to investigate the effect of seed priming on germination behaviour, growth parameters and water relation behaviours of wheat (BARI Gom 30) under drought stress condition. In the 1 st experiment seeds of wheat were surface sterilized with 75% alcohol for 5 minutes. Wheat seeds of BARI Gom 30 was pre-soaked in 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% KCI solution, distilled water for 9hrs and untreated seeds were used as control treatment. Results showed that seeds priming induces the germination percentage, growth parameters (seedling fresh weight, root length, shoot length, shoot dry weight, root dry weight and vigour index) and water relation behaviours (relative water content, water retention capacity, water saturation deficit) of wheat. The highest germination percentage (98%), root and shoot length (175.55mm and 162.34mm), plant fresh weight (276.40mg), root and shoot dry weight (17.81mg and 13.48), vigour index (331.57), water retention capacity (19.40%), relative water content (92.80%) were obtained from seeds treated with 2% KCI and then gradually decrease with increasing KCI concentration. Highest water saturation deficit (18.00%) was obtained from control seeds and lowest was obtained from seeds treated with 2% KCI. In 2 nd experiment primed (2% KCI for 9hrs), hydro primed (distilled water for 9hrs) and non-primed seeds were treated under drought stress condition induced by 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% PEG solution. Seeds treated with 2% KCI showed better result compared to hydro priming and control (non-primed) seeds up to 10% PEG concentrations in all parameters and this value decreased with increasing concentrations of PEG solution. Hydro priming also showed better result than nonprimed seeds in all parameters but not better than 2% KCI priming solution. So, seeds primed with 2% KCI and distilled water showed the better performance compared to nonprimed seeds under drought stress condition. The result suggested that seeds primed with 2% KCI for 9 hrs considered as best priming concentration for inducing drought tolerance in wheat seeds in germination behaviour and all related growth parameters

    BIORATIONAL MANAGEMENT OF SUCKING INSECT PESTS OF OKRA

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Entomology Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN ENTOMOLOGYThe study was conducted to investigate biorational management of sucking insect pests of okra in the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October, 2020 to February 2021. The experiment consisted of the management practices (T 1 = Spinosad @ 0.5 ml/L of water; T = Matrine @ 1.0 ml/L of water; T 3 = Thiamethoxam @ 0.2 g/L of water; T ii 4 2 = Neem oil @ 5.0 ml/L of water with detergent; T 5 = Abamectin @ 1.0 ml/L of water; T = Buprofezin @ 0.2 g/L of water and T 7 6 = Untreated control) are applied at 7 days interval. The experiment was designed with Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different pest incidence level of infestation, yield attributes and yield were collected and recorded. At total fruiting stage, in number basis, considering the % fruit infestation, the lowest infested fruits per plant were recorded from Buprofezin @ 0.2 g/L of water (33.62%), while the highest infested fruits were recorded in control (44.21%). The lowest plant infestation was found from Buprofezin (34.25%), whereas the highest infested plants were recorded in untreated control (46.33%). The tallest plant was recorded from neem oil (244.9 cm), while the shortest plant was found from Spinosad (195.2 cm). The highest yield of fruits was observed from Buprofezin @ 0.2 g/L of water at 7 days interval (15.59 ton/ha), while the lowest yield per hectare was found from control (11.36 ton/ha). Among the treatments, Buprofezin @ 0.2 g/L of water at 7 days interval was more effective for the controlling of insect pests as well as highest yield contributing characters and yield of Okra

    EFFECTS OF ZINC ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUSTARD

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYA field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of October-2019 to February 2020 to investigate the effects of zinc on growth and yield of mustard. The experiment conducted in a split-plot design with three replications. The experimental factors were, Factor A: Mustard variety (2) viz, V 1 = BARI Sarisha-14, V = BARI Sarisha-15 and Factor B: Zinc level (6) viz, Zn 1 , Zn 3 = 3.00 kg ha -1 , Zn 4 = 4.00 kg ha 0 = 0 kg ha -1 and Zn -1 5 , Zn 1 = 1.00 kg ha = 5.00 kg ha -1 2 -1 , Zn .The result showed that the data on growth, yield and yield contributing characteristics of mustard varieties and zinc levels with their combinations were found significant. BARI Sarisha-14 (V ) produced the maximum number of siliqua plant cm), number of seeds siliqua -1 -1 2 = 2.00 kg ha (103.21), siliqua length plant (23.84), 1000-seed weight (3.66 g), seed yield (1.67 t ha -1 ), stover yield (3.90 t ha -1 ), biological yield (5.57 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (29.90 %). In case of zinc level application of 5.00 kg zinc ha -1 (Zn ) recorded the maximum number of siliqua plant -1 (101.83), siliqua length plant -1 5 (9.77 cm), number of seeds siliqua -1 (23.84), 1000-seed weight (3.74 g), seed yield (1.82 t ha -1 ), stover yield (4.07 t ha -1 ), biological yield (5.89 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (30.82 %). The interaction affect revealed that the cultivation of BARI Sarisha-14 mustard variety (V ) along with 5.00 kg zinc ha -1 (Zn ) treated plot recorded the maximum number of siliqua plant -1 5 (116.33), siliqua length plant -1 (11.07 cm), number of seeds siliqua (27.67), 1000 seed weight (3.89 g), seed yield (1.94 t ha -1 ), stover yield (4.16 t ha ), biological yield (6.10 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (31.79 %) highly positive correlations between seed yield and yield contributing characters of mustard more observed other treatment combinations
