VALUE CHAIN ANALYSIS AND POST HARVEST DISEASES OF DIFFERENT CITRUS FRUITS

PLANT PATHOLOGYA survey study was conducted to analyze citrus value chain and identify different
citrus diseases at farm level and trader level. The survey was conducted during
the periods of August 2020 to February 2021 in the Sylhet and Dhaka district of
Bangladesh. Three upazillas namely Jaintapur, Khadimnagar and Sylhet Sadar
were selected for collection of information on farm practices and disease faced
by those area’s growers. Sylhet Kodomtoli wholesale market, Mohammadpur
Krishi market, Karwan bazar and Retailer shops (Taltola, Mirpur 1, farmgate) at
Dhaka city were studied for value chain at marketing. The survey revealed that
citrus growing areas were increased. Most of the farmers were medium sized
(46.66%) and farmers have 5-15 years’ experience in citrus cultivation. The
common varieties grown in that selected areas were Elachi lemon, Zara lemon,
BARI malta and Orange (BARI Komla). For transportation harvested citrus
fruits, Beparies mostly used mini trucks. Traders(retailer) used van (60%) and
local carts (15%) for transporting their citrus in the marketing channel. Disease
incidence varied from variety to variety and upazilla to upazilla. Highest canker
incidence (52%) was found in khadimnagar in Elachi lemon and highest Citrus
scab incidence (31%) was found at Jaintapur in BARI malta. At post-harvest
stage, highest citrus blue mold incidence (12.3%) was found in retailer shops at
Dhaka city and citrus green mold incidence (16.6%) was also found in retailer
shops at Dhaka city. Citrus blue mold incidence (3%) was found lowest in
kodomtoli wholesale market, Sylhet district and citrus green mold disease
incidence (4.1%) was found lowest at karwan bazar market, Dhaka. In our study
revealed that highest marketing margin gained by retailer level for BARI malta

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF FLOATING SEEDBED USING DIFFERENT GROWTH PROMOTING FERTILIZERS

submerged for 6-9 months in year during and after monsoon which is increasing day
by day due to climate change. Therefore this research was conducted to evaluate the
floating seedbed output of okra and cucumber in prolonged period (6-9 months) of
time at Nazirpur upazila. The experiment was conducted following a Randomized
Complete Block Design (RCBD) involving three treatments with four replications viz.

DEVELOPMENT & POVERTY STUDIESThe objectives of this research study are to recognize and measure the profitability
analysis on brinjal production, its profit and socio-economic condition of farmers.
Primary data collection was carried out at three villages of Jamalpur Sadar upzilla under
Jamalpur district. The study was based on primary data, collected from 70 farmers,
selected using a purposively simple random sampling technique. Cobb-Douglas
production function was applied to determine the effects of inputs on brinjal production.
Land preparation cost, seedling cost, fertilizer cost and insecticides have significant
impact on brinjal production. The average yield per hectare of brinjal was 121440
kilograms. The average purveyed price was BDT 20 per kilogram. Per hectare of gross
return, gross margin, and net return/profit of brinjal production were BDT 242880;
BDT 1133970 and BDT 993970 respectively (Table 4.13). Per hectare benefit cost ratio
was estimated at 1.70. Thus, Brinjal is a highly profitable enterprise. Increase of only
managerial skills result in a substantial increase of output for Brinjal. Farmers faced a
lot of problems in producing Brinjal. The problems were social and cultural, financial
and technical. Lack of quality seed was one of the most important limitations of
producing Brinjal in the study area. Lack of operating capital, high price of quality seed,
high cost of irrigation water, shortage of human labor, lack of storage facilities,
marketing problems and lack of quality preparation were the major problems faced by
farmers. These are the major constraints for the producers of Brinjal in the study area

experiment was conducted at net house in the Department of Plant Pathology, Shere-Bangla

during
the
period
of
July
to
October,
2021.
The
experiment
was
carried
out
in
a
complete
randomized
design
(CRD)
with
three
replications
and
each
of
the
treatment
contains

pots.
The
total
number
of
unit
pots
was
30.
Summer
variety
‘BARI
hybrid
tomato-4’
was
used
as
a tested
cultivar.
Data
on disease
incidence
and disease
severity
of
wilt
complex
and
TYLCV
was
recorded
at
30,

and

DAT.
Fungal
pathogen
was
isolated
by
tissue
planting
method. Bacterial pathogen was isolated by dilution and streaking
method. In case of wilt complex, among the selected bio–agents, the lowest disease
incidence (33.33%) and severity (15%) was found in T
1
(Metarhizium anisopliae +
Trichoderma harzianum) and the highest disease incidence (66.67%) and severity
(20%) was found in T
3
(Metarhizium anisopliae + Beauveria bessiana). In case of
TYLCV, the lowest disease incidence (66.67%) and severity (20%) was found in T
3
(Metarhizium anisopliae + Beauveria bessiana) and the highest disease incidence
(100%) and severity (30%) was found in T
2
(Metarhizium anisopliae + Verticillum
lecanii). From the present study, it was found that the wilt complex of tomato
caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici and Ralstonia solanacearum that
was confirmed by morphological characteristics of macro and micro conidial
structures and biochemical tests viz. gram staining, motility, KOH solubility,
catalase and simon’s citrate test, respectively. The performance of the treatments in
respect of yield and yield contributing characters against wilt complex and TYLCV
of summer tomato varied significantly. However, from the present study it may be
concluded that mustard oil cake and neem leaf extract can be used as ecofriendly
approach for effective management of wilt complex and Tomato Yellow Leaf curl
Virus (TYLCV) in summer tomato cultivation
A STUDY ON IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON MOBILE FINANCIAL SERVICE AND SAVING PRACTICES: THE CASE OF BANGLADESH

Almost all countries have experienced the impact of coronavirus on their economy.
Unexpectedly, due to that situation some industries like retail chain shops, online grocery shops,
mobile financial service, IT firms are experiencing growth in Bangladesh. Mobile financial
service is relatively new concept but a fast-growing industry in our country. But there are some
issues that MFS users face, especially rural people. History of economics shows that countries
that succeeded in accumulating high levels of domestic investment largely financed by domestic
savings, achieved faster rates of economic growth and development. So, understanding peoples
saving behaviour is crucial. Therefore, this paper focused on finding the impact of COVID-19
on saving practice of mobile financial service users of rural area as economic growth and
development depend on a country’s level of domestic savings. To fully understand the situation,
the researchers aimed to find the answers to some key questions: (1) Did mobile financial
service reach to rural people in this pandemic? (2) Did saving rate increased during pandemic?
(3) What is the impact of mobile financial service on saving behavior of people? (4) What are
the key determinants of saving practices of mobile banking users? Both descriptive and
advanced statistical analysis were used for analyzing the data and a cross sectional survey on
user of mobile financial services was performed. The study area was three sub districts
(Phulbaria, Nandail, Gouripur) of Mymensingh district in Bangladesh. A four-stage sampling
technique was used for data collection. First three villages were chosen from the three selected
sub-districts. Then, the highest MFS user villages were surveyed for collecting information
through primary survey. Simple random sampling method has been used in selecting sample
and collecting data from the respondent. A total of 210 users was interviewed from the selected
areas. Statistical packages such as SPSS was used for data analysis. Researchers found that
mobile financial service industry has significantly grown during pandemic but the saving
practices of rural people have decreased. Age, occupation, average monthly family income,
saving habit, monthly income during pandemic are the significant factors of the saving practices
of mobile banking users. The findings will be useful to overcome the pandemic crisis and to
achieve the sustainable development goals

INFLUENCE OF COVID-19 ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF THE FARMERS IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH

SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2019The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a new era in the efficacy of the
agricultural sectors. Farmers of Bangladesh are directly affected by COVID-19.
Considering the above situation, the present study was designed to investigate the
influence of COVID-19 on socio-economic conditions of the farmers in some selected
areas of Bangladesh. Data were collected from the 107 respondents selected from the
intervention area (5 villages). Majority (71.80%) of the farmers faced medium
influence of COVID-19. Among the variables, age and problem faced by the farmers
in crop cultivation during COVID-19 had positive significant contribution and
sanitation practiced by the farmers had negative contribution to the influence of
COVID-19 on their socio-economic conditions. Among these, problem faced by the
farmers in crop cultivation had the highest contribution (42.2%). All the factors
cooperatively contribute 51.3% of the variance of influence of COVID-19 (R
=0.513). Majority (64.60%) of the farmers had medium problem in crop cultivation
during COVID-19. According to problem faced index (PFI), rate of increasing cost of
production ranked first and loan is not available when need ranked last. It is
concluded that the influence of COVID-19 on farmer’s socio-economic conditions
were moderate and needed further advancement. Bases on the results, it was
recommended that the government and non-government organizations should take
initiatives for reducing the influence of COVID-19 on farmer’s socio-economic
conditions.
