    VALUE CHAIN ANALYSIS AND POST HARVEST DISEASES OF DIFFERENT CITRUS FRUITS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PLANT PATHOLOGYA survey study was conducted to analyze citrus value chain and identify different citrus diseases at farm level and trader level. The survey was conducted during the periods of August 2020 to February 2021 in the Sylhet and Dhaka district of Bangladesh. Three upazillas namely Jaintapur, Khadimnagar and Sylhet Sadar were selected for collection of information on farm practices and disease faced by those area’s growers. Sylhet Kodomtoli wholesale market, Mohammadpur Krishi market, Karwan bazar and Retailer shops (Taltola, Mirpur 1, farmgate) at Dhaka city were studied for value chain at marketing. The survey revealed that citrus growing areas were increased. Most of the farmers were medium sized (46.66%) and farmers have 5-15 years’ experience in citrus cultivation. The common varieties grown in that selected areas were Elachi lemon, Zara lemon, BARI malta and Orange (BARI Komla). For transportation harvested citrus fruits, Beparies mostly used mini trucks. Traders(retailer) used van (60%) and local carts (15%) for transporting their citrus in the marketing channel. Disease incidence varied from variety to variety and upazilla to upazilla. Highest canker incidence (52%) was found in khadimnagar in Elachi lemon and highest Citrus scab incidence (31%) was found at Jaintapur in BARI malta. At post-harvest stage, highest citrus blue mold incidence (12.3%) was found in retailer shops at Dhaka city and citrus green mold incidence (16.6%) was also found in retailer shops at Dhaka city. Citrus blue mold incidence (3%) was found lowest in kodomtoli wholesale market, Sylhet district and citrus green mold disease incidence (4.1%) was found lowest at karwan bazar market, Dhaka. In our study revealed that highest marketing margin gained by retailer level for BARI malta (1254.21tk/quintal

    SYSTEM OF MUSTARD INTENSIFICATION AS INFLUENCED BY VARIETY AND VERMICOMPOST

    A Thesis Submitted to The Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYA field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka to study the system of mustard intensification as influenced by variety and vermicompost during the period from October 2020 to February 2021 in rabi season. The experiment consisted of two factors following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications as factor A: variety (3) viz; V 1 = BARI sarisha-9, V 2 ii = BARI sarisha-14 and V 3 = BARI sarisha15 and factor B: different vermicompost doses (4) viz; F 1 = recommended doses of fertilizer + no vermicompost,F 2 = recommended dose of fertilizer+2 t ha -1 vermicompost, F 3 = recommended doses of fertilize+3 t ha -1 vermicompost, F 4 = recommended dose of fertilizer+4 t ha -1 vermicompost. Data on different parameters were collected for assessing results for this experiment and showed significant variation in respect of growth yield and yield contributing characteristics of mustard due to the effect of variety, vermicompost doses and their combinations. Among different variety, BARI sarisha-9 recorded the maximum number of siliqua plant -1 (597.46), length of siliqua (5.15 cm),seed yield (2.59 t ha ), stover yield (4.35 t ha -1 ), biological yield (6.93t ha -1 ) and harvest index (37.24%) and BARI Sarisha 14 recorded maximum seeds siliqua -1 (32.05), 1000 seeds weight (3.55 g).In case of different vermicompost doses, application of recommended dose of fertilizer + 4 t ha vermicompost treated plot recorded the maximum number of siliqua plant -1 (382.8), length of siliqua (5.77 cm), number of seeds siliqua -1 -1 (29.67), 1000 seeds weight (3.96 g), seed yield (2.26 t ha ), stover yield (3.84 t ha -1 ), biological yield (6.10 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (36.87 %).In case of combined effect, the maximum number of siliqua plant -1 (655.07), length of siliqua (6.46 cm), seed yield (2.96 t ha -1 ), stover yield (4.65 t ha -1 ), biological yield (7.62 t ha ) and harvest index (38.92 %) were recorded in BARI Sarisha-9 (V 1 ) along with recommended doses of fertilizer + 4 t ha -1 vermicompost (F 4 ) treated plot. Whereas number of seeds siliqua -1 (32.67), 1000 seeds weight (4.16 g) were with BARI Sarisha-14 along with recommended doses of fertilizer + 4 t ha -1 vermicompost treated plot. Thus for cultivation of mustard, BARI Sarisha-9 (V 1 ) along with (F 4 ) recommended doses of fertilizer + 4 t ha vermicompost performed well for higher seed production of mustard

    PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF FLOATING SEEDBED USING DIFFERENT GROWTH PROMOTING FERTILIZERS

Therefore this research was conducted to evaluate the floating seedbed output of okra and cucumber in prolonged period (6-9 months) of time at Nazirpur upazila. The experiment was conducted following a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) involving three treatments with four replications viz. T 1 : control (without organic and inorganic fertilizer), T 2 : Organic fertilizer (cow dung) and T 3 : recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers(NPK). In case of okra, the longest plant height (156.90 cm), maximum number of branches (5.50) and leaves (55.75) were found in the treatment T 3 . Regarding yield parameters, significantly higher number of fruits plant -1 , fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), individual fruit weight (g), fruits weight plant -1 (g) and yield (t·ha -1 ) were 22.00, 16.38 cm, 6.48 cm, 21.67 g, 602.80 g, 12.12 t·ha -1 obtained respectively by applying the treatment T 3 . The lowest output was recorded in control for all the cases. Similar trend of growth and yield were also observed during the cultivation of cucumber under the same treatment conditions. The highest value of BCR (1.07 and 1.63) was recorded from the treatment T 3 for both okra and cucumber respectively. So floating gardening is a sustainable farming method and income strategy for rural householders in coastal flood-prone regions of Bangladesh

    PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF BRINJAL PRODUCTION IN JAMALPUR DISTRICT

IN DEVELOPMENT & POVERTY STUDIESThe objectives of this research study are to recognize and measure the profitability analysis on brinjal production, its profit and socio-economic condition of farmers. Primary data collection was carried out at three villages of Jamalpur Sadar upzilla under Jamalpur district. The study was based on primary data, collected from 70 farmers, selected using a purposively simple random sampling technique. Cobb-Douglas production function was applied to determine the effects of inputs on brinjal production. Land preparation cost, seedling cost, fertilizer cost and insecticides have significant impact on brinjal production. The average yield per hectare of brinjal was 121440 kilograms. The average purveyed price was BDT 20 per kilogram. Per hectare of gross return, gross margin, and net return/profit of brinjal production were BDT 242880; BDT 1133970 and BDT 993970 respectively (Table 4.13). Per hectare benefit cost ratio was estimated at 1.70. Thus, Brinjal is a highly profitable enterprise. Increase of only managerial skills result in a substantial increase of output for Brinjal. Farmers faced a lot of problems in producing Brinjal. The problems were social and cultural, financial and technical. Lack of quality seed was one of the most important limitations of producing Brinjal in the study area. Lack of operating capital, high price of quality seed, high cost of irrigation water, shortage of human labor, lack of storage facilities, marketing problems and lack of quality preparation were the major problems faced by farmers. These are the major constraints for the producers of Brinjal in the study area

    ORGANIC MANAGEMENT OF WILT COMPLEX AND TOMATO YELLOW LEAF CURL VIRUS IN SUMMER TOMATO USING BIO-AGENTS, BOTANICAL AND AGRO BIO-PRODUCTS FORTIFIED SOIL

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PLANT PATHOLOGYA pot and a lab experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of selected bioagents (Metarhizium anisopliae, Trichoderma harzianum, Verticillum lecanii, Beauveria bessiana), botanicals [Clerodendrum infortunatum (Vat) leaf extract, Lantana camara leaf extract, Azadiracta indica (Neem) leaf extract] and agro bioproducts (Tea wastage, Garlic powder, Mustard oil cake) against the wilt complex and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) in summer tomato cultivation. The experiment was conducted at net house in the Department of Plant Pathology, Shere-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh, during the period of July to October, 2021. The experiment was carried out in a complete randomized design (CRD) with three replications and each of the treatment contains 3 pots. The total number of unit pots was 30. Summer variety ‘BARI hybrid tomato-4’ was used as a tested cultivar. Data on disease incidence and disease severity of wilt complex and TYLCV was recorded at 30, 45 and 60 DAT. Fungal pathogen was isolated by tissue planting method. Bacterial pathogen was isolated by dilution and streaking method. In case of wilt complex, among the selected bio–agents, the lowest disease incidence (33.33%) and severity (15%) was found in T 1 (Metarhizium anisopliae + Trichoderma harzianum) and the highest disease incidence (66.67%) and severity (20%) was found in T 3 (Metarhizium anisopliae + Beauveria bessiana). In case of TYLCV, the lowest disease incidence (66.67%) and severity (20%) was found in T 3 (Metarhizium anisopliae + Beauveria bessiana) and the highest disease incidence (100%) and severity (30%) was found in T 2 (Metarhizium anisopliae + Verticillum lecanii). From the present study, it was found that the wilt complex of tomato caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici and Ralstonia solanacearum that was confirmed by morphological characteristics of macro and micro conidial structures and biochemical tests viz. gram staining, motility, KOH solubility, catalase and simon’s citrate test, respectively. The performance of the treatments in respect of yield and yield contributing characters against wilt complex and TYLCV of summer tomato varied significantly. However, from the present study it may be concluded that mustard oil cake and neem leaf extract can be used as ecofriendly approach for effective management of wilt complex and Tomato Yellow Leaf curl Virus (TYLCV) in summer tomato cultivation

    A STUDY ON IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON MOBILE FINANCIAL SERVICE AND SAVING PRACTICES: THE CASE OF BANGLADESH

Almost all countries have experienced the impact of coronavirus on their economy. Unexpectedly, due to that situation some industries like retail chain shops, online grocery shops, mobile financial service, IT firms are experiencing growth in Bangladesh. Mobile financial service is relatively new concept but a fast-growing industry in our country. But there are some issues that MFS users face, especially rural people. History of economics shows that countries that succeeded in accumulating high levels of domestic investment largely financed by domestic savings, achieved faster rates of economic growth and development. So, understanding peoples saving behaviour is crucial. Therefore, this paper focused on finding the impact of COVID-19 on saving practice of mobile financial service users of rural area as economic growth and development depend on a country’s level of domestic savings. To fully understand the situation, the researchers aimed to find the answers to some key questions: (1) Did mobile financial service reach to rural people in this pandemic? (2) Did saving rate increased during pandemic? (3) What is the impact of mobile financial service on saving behavior of people? (4) What are the key determinants of saving practices of mobile banking users? Both descriptive and advanced statistical analysis were used for analyzing the data and a cross sectional survey on user of mobile financial services was performed. The study area was three sub districts (Phulbaria, Nandail, Gouripur) of Mymensingh district in Bangladesh. A four-stage sampling technique was used for data collection. First three villages were chosen from the three selected sub-districts. Then, the highest MFS user villages were surveyed for collecting information through primary survey. Simple random sampling method has been used in selecting sample and collecting data from the respondent. A total of 210 users was interviewed from the selected areas. Statistical packages such as SPSS was used for data analysis. Researchers found that mobile financial service industry has significantly grown during pandemic but the saving practices of rural people have decreased. Age, occupation, average monthly family income, saving habit, monthly income during pandemic are the significant factors of the saving practices of mobile banking users. The findings will be useful to overcome the pandemic crisis and to achieve the sustainable development goals

    RESPONSE OF AROMATIC RICE TO LEAF CLIPPING AT SEEDLING AND GROWTH STAGES

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYAn experiment was conducted during July to December-2019, at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to investigate the response of aromatic rice to leaf clipping at different stages. The experiment consisted of two factors, Factor A: Seedling top clipping (3) vi; S₀= Control (no clipping), S₁ =1/3 top clipping and S₂= 1/2 nd top clipping and Factor B: Leaf clipping (During panicle initiation stage) (5) viz; L₀= Control (no clipping), L₁= Lower 1 leaves, L₂= Lower 2 nd and 3 rd leaves, L₃= Lower 3 rd and 4 ii th st and 2 leaves and L₄= Flag leaf clipping. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. Result revealed that seedling and leaf clipping either individually or combined showed significant variations in most of the characters of aromatic rice. In case of seedling clipping the maximum effective tillers hill -1 (10.86), panicle length (25.98 cm), filled grains panicle -1 (137.72), total grains panicle -1 (166.69), 1000 grains weight (17.64 g), grain yield (4.59 t ha -1 ), straw yield (7.56 t ha -1 nd ), biological yield (12.15 t ha ) and harvest index (37.73 %) were observed in S 1 (1/3 rd seedling top clipping) treatment. In case of leaf clipping the maximum effective tillers hill -1 (11.10), panicle length (27.27 cm), filled grains panicle -1 (146.49), total grains panicle -1 (170.65), 1000 grains weight (18.43 g), grain yield (4.60 t ha -1 ), straw yield (7.69 t ha -1 ), biological yield (12.29 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (37.40 %) were observed in L 0 (No leaf clipping) treatment. In case of combined effect, 1/3 rd seedling top clipping (S 1 ) along with no leaf clipping (L 0 ) treatment combination (S 1 L 0 ) gave the best result to achieving the maximum effective tillers hill -1 (11.80), panicle length (28.39 cm), filled grains panicle (155.00), total grains panicle -1 (177.21), 1000 grains weight (19.61 g), grain yield (5.04 t ha -1 ), biological yield (12.88 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (39.26 %). The corresponding lowest grain yield (3.79 t ha seedling top clipping (S 2 -1 ) of aromatic rice was observed in 1/2 ) along with flag leaf clipping (L 4 ) treatment combination (S 2 L 4 ). Treatment 1/3 rd seedling top clipping along with no leaf clipping is proved to be a best management for extension yield of aromatic rice (BRRI dhan70)

    INFLUENCE OF COVID-19 ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF THE FARMERS IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH

Farmers of Bangladesh are directly affected by COVID-19. Considering the above situation, the present study was designed to investigate the influence of COVID-19 on socio-economic conditions of the farmers in some selected areas of Bangladesh. Data were collected from the 107 respondents selected from the intervention area (5 villages). Majority (71.80%) of the farmers faced medium influence of COVID-19. Among the variables, age and problem faced by the farmers in crop cultivation during COVID-19 had positive significant contribution and sanitation practiced by the farmers had negative contribution to the influence of COVID-19 on their socio-economic conditions. Among these, problem faced by the farmers in crop cultivation had the highest contribution (42.2%). All the factors cooperatively contribute 51.3% of the variance of influence of COVID-19 (R =0.513). Majority (64.60%) of the farmers had medium problem in crop cultivation during COVID-19. According to problem faced index (PFI), rate of increasing cost of production ranked first and loan is not available when need ranked last. It is concluded that the influence of COVID-19 on farmer’s socio-economic conditions were moderate and needed further advancement. Bases on the results, it was recommended that the government and non-government organizations should take initiatives for reducing the influence of COVID-19 on farmer’s socio-economic conditions.

    MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES AND YIELD RESPONSE OF BORO RICE TO BORON AND ZINC

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL BOTANY SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021The present piece of work was carried out at the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2019 to April 2020 in Boro season to investigate the morpho-physiological attributes and yield response of boro rice to boron and zinc. The experiment consisted of two factors, and followed Randomized Complete Block Design. Factor A: Boro rice varieties viz (3); V 1 : BRRI dhan29, V 2 : BRRI dhan50, V : BRRI dhan55, Factor B: Different level of boron and zinc fertilizers viz (4); F 0 3 : Control, F : Boron @ 15 kg ha -1 , F 2 : Zinc @ 20 kg ha -1 and F 3 : Boron @ 15 kg ha -1 1 + Zinc@20 kg ha . Data on different growths, yield contributing characters and yield were recorded to find out the response of boro rice varieties to different doses of zinc and boron fertilizers and different parameters of boro rice showed significant variations. Among the varieties, V (BRRI dhan29) treatment perform the best and recorded the maximum number of effective tillers hill 1 -1 (16.09), panicle length (26.72 cm), filled grains panicle (148.45), number of total grains panicle -1 (166.19), 1000 grains weight (26.24 g), grain yield (5.92 t ha -1 ), straw yield (7.08 t ha -1 ), biological yield (12.99 t ha ) and harvest index (45.36 %). In case of different doses of zinc and boron fertilizers applications, the maximum, number of effective tillers hill -1 (17.72), panicle length (26.99 cm), filled grains panicle -1 (150.75), total grains panicle -1 (167.78), 1000 grains weight (28.39 g), grain yield (5.69 t ha -1 ), straw yield (6.54 t ha -1 ), biological yield (12.22 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (46.38 %) were recorded in F (Boron @ 15 kg/ha+ Zinc @ 20 kg/ha) treatment. In respect of treatment combinations V 3 1 F performed the best and recorded the highest grain yield (6.86 t ha -1 ). Thus BRRI dhan29 along with application of Boron @ 15 kg ha -1 + Zinc @ 20 kg ha -1 considered as a suitable treatment combination for boro rice production. 3 -1 -1 -

    EFFECT OF BORON ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF FIELD-PEA

    A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRY SEMESTER: JAN-JUNE, 2021A field experiment was carried out to find out the effect of boron on growth and yield of field pea (BARI Motor-3) at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh during the period from November, 2019 to March 2020. Seven doses of boron including control was considered as treatments viz. T ; control), T 1 (0.5 kg B ha -1 ), T 2 (1.0 kg B ha -1 ), T 3 (1.5 kg B ha -1 ), T 4 0 (0 kg B ha (2.0 kg B ha (2.5 kg B ha -1 ) and T 6 (3.0 kg B ha -1 ). This experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. All the parameters studied on growth, yield attributes and yield parameters were significantly affected due to boron doses. The maximum plant height (107.80 cm) was registered from the treatment T (3.0 kg B ha -1 ) but the T 3 (1.5 kg B ha -1 ) showed maximum number of branch plant (4.27), number of pods plant -1 (20.53), number of seeds pod -1 (6.60), 100 seed weight (13.08 g), seed yield (1732 kg ha -1 ), stover yield (1862 kg ha -1 ), biological yield (3594 kg ha ) and harvest index (48.27%) whereas the lowest result was obtained from control treatment T (0 kg B ha -1 ). In terms of nutrients content in field pea seed, significantly highest B content (33.33 ppm) was recorded from T but the highest N content (4.81) and Mn content (102.50 ppm) were achieved from T 5 . Similarly, significantly the highest Zn content (60.12 ppm) and Fe content (164.30 ppm) was recorded from T 4 whereas the lowest N, B, Zn, Fe and Mn content were recorded from control treatment (0 kg B ha ). Regarding P, K, S, Ca and Mg content in field pea seed, non-significant variation was found among the treatments. So, from the above results, it can be concluded that application of 1.5 kg B ha -1 (T 3 ) can be treated as best treatment followed by T (1.0 kg B ha -1 ) regarding yield performance of field pea (BARI Motor-3). 3 2 -1 -1 6 -1 -1 ), T -1 5
