    PHYSIOLOGICAL AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.) VARIETIES UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE STRESS

In Bangladesh the winter is very short. So, timely sowing of wheat seeds can be helpful. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with three replications at the net house of the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2019 to March 2020 to find out the effect of high temperature stress on growth, physiology and yield of wheat. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor A: Variety (4); V 1 BARI Gom 29, V 2 Sowing date (3)-S 1 : BARI Gom 30, V 3 : BARI Gom 32, V 4 : Sowing at 25 November, S 2 : BARI Gom 33 and Factors B: : Sowing at 25 December, 2019 and S 3 Sowing at 15 January, 2020. The highest plant height was found from V 4 lowest plant height was recorded from V 3 , while the . The SPAD value, relative water content (RWC) and membrane stability index (MSI) adversely affected under high temperature mediated by late sowing.     EFFECT OF PRE-STORAGE SEED TREATMENT ON STORABILITY OF TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE SEED

    A Thesis Submitted to The Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRONOMYThe experiment was conducted at the Central Laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to find out the effect of pre-storage seed treatment on storability of transplanted aman rice seed during the period from January to October, 2020. Two T. aman rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan87 (V 1 ) and BR11 (V 2 ) and five seed treatments viz. control treatment; no seed treatment (T 0 ), ascorbic acid @ 0.5 g/kg seeds (T 1 ), aspirin @ 0.1 g/kg seeds (T 2 ), bleaching powder @ 2 g/kg seeds (T 3 ) and red chili powder @ 2 g/kg seeds (T 4 ) were used in this experiment. The experiment was carried out following Randomized Complete Block design with four replications. Data were collected after treatment and at storage (initial, 236 days after storage and 271 days after storage) on germination percentage, germination speed index, seedling vigour index, germination rate, mean daily germination, mean germination time, peak value, germination value, shoot length, root length, total length, moisture content percentage and viability percentage. The result revealed that BRRI dhan87 (V 1 ) finally (at 271 days after storage) showed the highest germination percentage (81.20%), germination speed index (8.26), seedling vigour index (17.95), germination rate (10.74), mean daily germination (5.35), mean germination time (27.31), peak value (16.93), germination value (93.94), shoot length (13.59 cm) and viability percentage (84.15%) compared to the variety BR11 (V 2 ). The maximum storage duration (at 271 days after storage), seeds treated with Bleaching powder @ 2 g/kg seeds (T 3 ) performed better in maintaining significantly higher germination (71.75%), germination speed index (7.66), peak value (15.60), germination value (83.60) and viability percentage (76.00%) followed by aspirin @ 0.1 g/kg seeds (T 2 ). These treatments also showed better performance at 236 days after storage whereas control treatment T 0 showed least performance. At 271 days after storage, interaction effect of BRRI dhan87 and bleaching powder @ 2 g/kg seeds (V 1 T 3 ) gave the highest germination percentage (86.50%), germination speed index (8.85), mean germination time (29.89), peak value (18.45), germination value (115.85) and viability percentage (89.00%). V 1 T 3 also gave better performance at 236 days after storage compared to other treatment combinations whereas V 2 T 0 showed lower performance on recorded storage parameters. It is concluded that seeds of BRRI dhan87 treated with bleaching powder @ 2 g/kg seeds (T 3 ) at storage and the interaction of V 1 T 3 followed by BRRI dhan87 × seed treated with aspirin @ 0.1 g/kg seeds (V 1 T 2 ) performed better in maintaining the T. aman rice seed quality during storage for 9 months at room temperature

    EFFECT OF DIFFERENT DOSES AND TIME OF APPLICATION OF MUSTARD OIL CAKE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF RICE (Oryza sativa L.)

The experiment was carried out at the Soil Science Farm at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of November, 2019 to May 2020 to study the effect of different rates and dates of mustard oil cake application on growth and yield of rice (BRRI dhan67). The experiment was laid out on Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were four mustard oil cake (MOC) fertilizer levels viz., M 1 =no mustard oil cake, M 2 =25 kg ha =50 kg ha-1, M 4 =75 kg ha -1 and three times of application viz., T 1 -1 , M 3 =Basal dose, T 2 =20 DAT, and T 3 =35 DAT. Results indicated that the effect of mustard oil cake showed significant variation in respect of all growth, yield contributing characters and yield. At harvest, highest plant height (81.66cm), tillers hill -1 (21.55), effective tillers hill (14.22), panicle length (21.87cm), filled grains panicle -1 (132.1), 1000 grain weight (29.35 g), grain yield (8.2 t ha -1 ), straw yield (5.16 t ha -1 ) was obtained from the application of MOC. On the other hand, highest plant height (81.67cm), tillers hill (21.42), effective tillers hill -1 (14.58), panicle length (22.84cm), filled grains panicle (132.24), 1000 grain weight (29.35 g), grain yield (7.6 t ha -1 ), straw yield (5.15t ha ) was obtained from the time of application. Mustard oil cake @ 75 kg gave the highest grain yield (7.6 t ha -1 ). Therefore, application of MOC @ 75 kg ha at 35 DAT appears to be the best package for BRRI dhan67 produced higher yield

    Influence of Boron Application Methods on Morpho-physiological Attributes and Yield of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL BOTANY SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021The experiment was carried out in a typical soil of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2019 to March 2020 to study the Influence of Boron Application Methods on Morpho-physiological Attributes and Yield of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The experiment was laid out Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments were T 0 : Control, T 1 : Soil application of 2 kg/ha B, T 2 : Seed priming, T 3 : Foliar spray at primordial stage, T 4 : Foliar spray at booting stage, T 5 : Foliar spray at primordial and booting stages, T 6 : Foliar spray at grain filling stage. The rate of Boron for soil application was 2 kg/ha B from boric acid (17% B), the rate for each foliar spray was 0.4% boric acid solution and seed priming was done by soaking wheat seeds into 0.1% boric acid solution. Data were recorded on different growth, yield and yield contributing parameters. Most of the parameters showed significant difference among the treatments. Results indicated that the highest plant height (94.467 cm), maximum total no. of tiller hill -1 (3.7000), longest length of flag leaf (23.393 cm), highest breadth of flag leaf (2.6267cm), longest spike length (12.887 cm), maximum no. of total grain spike -1 (68.867), maximum no. of filled grain spike -1 (67.733), maximum spikelet fertility (%) (98.353), maximum thousand grain weight (52.667 g), maximum total Grain weight ha -1 (2.8945 t ha -1 ), maximum straw yield (3.2611 t ha ) were found in T 5 treatment (Foliar spray at primordial and booting stages, 0.4% boric acid). Maximum leaf no. plant -1 (12.783) were found in T 1 treatment (Soil application of 2 kg/ha B). And, highest the SPAD value (51.063), no. of effective tillers plant were (2.6667) found in T 6 treatment (Foliar spray at grain filling stage, 0.4% boric acid).     EFFECT OF DIFFERENT COMBINATION OF BIOCHAR AND VERMICOMPOST ON YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF LENTIL

Two factors viz., Factor A: two lentil varieties; V 1 (BARI masur-6) and V 2 (BARI masur-7) and Factor B: Biochar + vermicompost (6 levels); T 1 (0 ton biochar ha ii -1 + 0 ton vermicompost ha ), T 2 (5 ton biochar ha -1 + 0 ton vermicompost ha -1 ), T 3 (0 ton biochar ha -1 + 5 ton vermicompost ha -1 ), T 4 (1 ton biochar ha -1 + 4 ton vermicompost ha -1 ), T 5 (4 ton biochar ha +1 ton vermicompost ha -1 ) and T 6 (2.5 ton biochar ha -1 +2.5 ton vermicompost ha ) were considered for the present study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. BARI masur-6 (V 1 ) and BARI masur-7 (V 2 ) showed non-significant difference between them for most of the yield and seed quality parameters. Treatment T 5 (4 ton biochar ha -1 +1 ton vermicompost ha -1 ) showed the best performance on seed yield and quality and gave the highest dry weight plant -1 (10.16 g), number of pods plant -1 (63.08), number of seeds pod (1.79), number of seeds plant -1 (113.50), seed yield plant -1 (2.82 g), stover yield plant (3.57 g), biological yield plant -1 (6.38 g), harvest index (44.17%) seed germination (91.50%), shoot length (5.32 cm) and root length (3.22 cm) of seedlings after 12 days of germination and seed vigor index (781.00) compared to other treatments including control. treatment combination of V 2 T 5 registered the highest dry weight plant (10.24 g), number of pods plant -1 (63.40), number of seeds pod -1 (1.80), number of seeds plant -1 (114.70), seed yield plant -1 (2.86 g), stover yield plant -1 (3.59 g), biological yield plant -1 (6.6.45 g), harvest index (44.47%), seed germination (92.00%), shoot length (5.36 cm) and root length (3.26 cm) of seedlings after 12 days of germination and seed vigor index (793.00) compared to other treatment combinations.     GENETIC VARIABILITY AND CHARACTER ASSOCIATION OF YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING CHARACTERS IN BOTTLE GOURD (Lagenaria siceraria L.)

    A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING SEMESTER: JULY-DECEMBER, 2021The experiment was carried out using ten genotypes of bottle gourd at the farm of Shere- Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to determine the genetic variability and to select the best performing genotypes for yield and its contributing traits during October 2020 to March 2021. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of variance revealed significant variations was exist among all the genotypes for the selected traits. The estimated variance components indicated environmental factors also contributed for the expression of the traits as the phenotypic co-efficient variation was higher than the genotypic counterparts. However, high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percentage of mean was found in number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit pedicel length, individual fruit weight, number of seeds per fruit, 100 seed weight, seed length, seed breadth and fruit yield per plant, hence inheritance of these traits was controlled by the additive gene actions whereas rest of the traits was governed by non-additive gene actions. Correlation study revealed that fruit yield per plant had a significant positive correlation with leaf breadth (cm), fruit diameter (cm), 100 seed weight (g) and individual fruit weight (kg) at the both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Moreover, path analysis revealed that days to 1 st female flowering, leaf length, no. of male flowers, fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), no. of fruits per plant, 100 seed weight (g) and individual fruit weight (g) showed positive direct effect on fruit yield per plant (kg) indicating that direct selection based on these traits may be helpful in evolving high yielding varieties of bottle gourd. Among the ten genotypes, G4 followed by G5, G7 and G10 showed the highest individual fruit weight while the highest fruit diameter was found in genotype G4 followed by G5, G7 and G8. Based on the individual fruit weight and fruit diameter that have a direct influence on generating the highest yield production; genotypes G4, G5, G7, G8 and G10 can be selected for developing the superior bottle gourd variety in future breeding programme

The experiment comprised of eight treatments viz., T 1 =Urea @ 210 g/plot +TSP@ 84g/plot + MoP@ 98g/plot+Spraying 0.2% Borax @ 2g/L of water, T 2 = BARI recommended fertilizers + Borax 7.0 g/plot + ZnSO 4 ii 8.4 g/plot in soil, T 3 = BARI recommended fertilizers + Spraying 0.5% Borax + 0.5% ZnSO 4 5g/L of water , T 4 = BARI recommended fertilizers + MgSO 4 10 g/ Plot + Spraying MnO 2 @ 2g/L of water , T 5 = BARI recommended fertilizers + Spraying Bamper Vitamix @ 2g/L of water, T 6 =BARI recommended fertilizers+Spraying 0.2% Borax @ 2g/L of water+0.2% ZnSO 4 @ 2gm/L of water, T 7 = BARI recommended fertilizers + Spraying 0.2% ZnSO 4 @ 2g/L of water and T 8 = control (e.g.: no N, P, K, S, Mg, Zn, Mn and B). Data on different growth and yield parameter were recorded and statistically significant variation was found for different treatments of secondary and micronutrients. The results of this experiment showed that, the maximum plant height (180.67 cm), number of seed per head (645.5), number of leaves per plant (23.33), leaf area (65.33 cm), length of leaf (23.88 cm), leaf width (19.88 cm), weight of total seed per plot (2.51 kg), weight of seed per head (64.55 gm), weight of single seed (0.1 g), yield (1.7 t/ha), oil content (46.53 %) and protein content (22.25 %) was obtained wth T 5 treatment. While the minimum number of leaves (12.00), number of seed per head (375.9), plant height (146.73 cm), number of total head per plot (37), weight of total seed per plot (1.18 kg), yield (0.85 ton per ha), oil content (21.28 %), weight of seed per head (26.31 gm), weight of single seed (0.07 g) and protein content (13.97 %) were recorded from the control treatment. So, it can be concluded that a combination of BARI-recommended fertilizers + spraying Bamper Vitamix @ 2gm/ L of water is suitable for sunflower cultivation

    EFFECT OF HIGHER DOSES OF UREA FERTILIZER OVER RECOMMENDED DOSE ON MUSTARD

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL BOTANY SEMESTER: JANUARY-JUNE, 2021The experiment was conducted at the research field of the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2019 to February 2020 to observe the effect of high doses urea on three different cultivars of mustard (BARI sarisha 11, BARI sarisha 16 and BARI sarisha 17). Three different levels of urea fertilizer was used such as T1 (250 kg/ha), T2 (312.50 kg/ha) and (375 kg/ha). The experiment was laid out under two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Under T1, the tallest plant height at harvest was 131.86 cm (BARI recommended dose). Lowest plant height was observed 100.59 cm under treatment T3. Overdoes of urea may cause plant height to decrease. The highest number of leaves was recorded 38.43 under T3. So, we can see that plant became bushier when an excess amount of urea was applied. Seed per siliqua was also affected by different quantities of urea. Under the recommended dose, the highest number of seed per siliqua (21.44) was recorded. Higher urea doses (T3) most likely had a negative impact on seed output. In the case of seed dry weight and pod length, there was no significant association. As a result, the total influence on yield components was negligible. The physiological indicators were significantly affected by varying levels of urea administration. Significant differences were seen between the SPAD reading and the Leaf porometer reading. T3 obtained the highest SPAD measurement (49.88) and T1 recorded the highest Leaf porometer reading (336.95). Results indicate that Overdose of urea had detrimental effect on yield of mustard plant though vegetative growth was higher in case of higher dose. Number of seed per siliqua was found highest (21.44) under treatment T1 (250kg/ha)

    EFFECTS OF NUMBER OF NODES AND CUTTING POSITION ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES AND YIELD OF SWEET POTATO

A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka during the period from October 2019 to April 2020, to investigate the effects of number of nodes and cutting position on morphophysiological attributes and yield of sweet potato. The experiment was consisted of nine treatments, and followed Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatments (9) viz, T 0 = 3 nodes from top cut, T = 3 nodes from middle cut, T 2 = 3 nodes from basal cut, T 3 = 5 nodes from top cut, T 1 = 5 nodes from middle cut, T 5 = 5 nodes from basal cut, T 6 = 7 nodes from top cut, T 4 = 7 nodes from middle cut and T 8 7 = 7 nodes from basal cut. Data on different parameters were collected for assessing results for this experiment and showed significant variation in respect of node number and cutting position of vine of sweet potato. Among different treatments T (5 nodes from top cut) out performed from all the other treatments and recorded maximum number of tubers plant 3 -1 (5.15), total weight of tuber plant (867.00 g), weight of marketable tuber plant -1 (802.00 g), total weight of tuber plot (10 kg), tubers yield (27.56 t ha -1 ) and dry matter (30.85 %) of tuberous root of sweet potato comparable to other treatments. The performance of T 0 -1 -1 (3 nodes from top) and T (7 nodes from top) were also significantly better. Thus for propagating of sweet potato through vine, 5 node from top cut is suitable for achieving higher yield.
