EFFECT OF DIFFERENT GROWING CONDITIONS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY ATTRIBUTES OF STRAWBERRY

HORTICULTUREShading is one of the cooling methods for changing the microclimate and maximizing
crop growth in hot and sunny regions. An Experiment was conducted at the Horticulture
Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to investigate the effect of
different growing environments on growth, yield and quality attributes of strawberry
during November-2019 to March-2020. The experiment was laid out in Randomized
Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four environmental treatments i.e. Poly shed
house, UV poly shed house, net house and open field condition with four replications for
each treatment. Experimental result revealed that the plants produced in the net house
condition had the maximum plant height (18.50 cm), total chlorophyll content (62.66),
fruit number (17.25), and yield (289.16 g/plant) of strawberries. In contrast, plants grown
under UV poly shade conditions recorded higher total soluble solids (7 °Brix), titratable
acidity (0.46%), ascorbic acid (39.33 mg/100g) and lower pH (3.40). Reducing sugar
(7.74 mg/g) and phenol (2.44 mg/g) levels were higher in fruits grown in poly shade.
Results indicated that the most suitable growing condition for yield and yield parameters
of strawberries was under the net house. In contrast, UV poly and poly house conditions
were favorable for producing better quality fruit
KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICES ON ANTIMICROBIAL USE IN BROILER AND LAYER FARMS AT CUMILLA DISTRICT, BANGLADESH

SEMESTER: JULY-DECEMBER/2021Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a global public health concern and it
is directly linked to the use of antibiotics by livestock farmers especially poultry and
dairy farmers. This study was conducted to assess the current situation of Knowledge,
Attitude and Practices (KAP) of farmers regarding antimicrobial use (AMU) in
poultry farms in Cumilla district of Bangladesh. Information of farmers was collected
in a pre-structured questionnaire and chi-square test was used to examine
relationships between knowledge, attitude and practice. The findings indicated that
farmers had a little knowledge about on AMR and ethical use of antibiotics. Majority
of the farmers showed positive attitude towards use of antibiotics. However, practices
regarding AMU were poor among the poultry farmers. The study also demonstrated
that layer farmers had better idea about antibiotics and had a good practice compared
to broiler farmers. The gap in the knowledge and attitude of the farmer’s regarding
AMU could be a potential factor of AMR. Further study can help build a more
accurately address the situation and help build a correct pathway to combat AMR
SELECTION IN F 2 POPULATIONS BASED ON GENETIC VARIABILITY OF RAPESEED (Brassica rapa L.)

populations of Brassica rapa L. at the
experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November
2019 to February 2020 considering thirteen yield contributing characters. To study 39
F
2
populations, the magnitude of variations in the characters, correlation, heritability,
genetic advance, direct and indirect effect of different characters on seed yield per
plant were taken under analysis. Significant variation was observed among all
populations for all the characters. For all of the traits, the phenotypic variance was
higher than the genotypic variation. Number of secondary branches per plant, total
siliqua and yield per plant showed high genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of
variance. Days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering and days to 80% flowering
showed high heritability coupled with low genetic advance and low genetic advance
in percentage of mean. Study on correlation revealed that yield/plant had significant
and positive association with number of primary branches per plant; number of
secondary branches/plant and total siliqua but non-significant and negative
association with days to first flowering and yield per plant at both phenotypic and
genotypic level. Path co-efficient analysis revealed that number of seeds per siliqua
showed highest positive direct effect on yield/plant followed by days to maturity, days
to 80% flowering, plant height, total siliqua and siliqua length. On the other hand,
number of primary branches/plant, number of secondary branches/plant, days to 50%
flowering, root length and thousand seed weight had negat ive direct effect on yield
per plant. Selection was conducted among 39 F
2
populations of Brassica rapa L. to
find out the early maturing and the highest yielding populations. 12
populations such
as
P5XP1, P5XP3, P1XP2, P1XP7, P6XP5, P7XP3, P3XP5, P3XP1, P3XP4, P4XP2,

were selected for high yielding and early maturing from the 39

(22.99%), total soluble solid (8.90%), percent total sugar (9.06%), percent reducing sugar

Semester: January - June, 2021For securing the clean energy demand along with the safety of the environment, a feasible
renewable energy source could be biogas. Dry anaerobic digestion needs less water, lower
logistic costs for fertilizers these factors generate interest in using it for treatment of even
high-nitrogen substrates for biogas production. The purpose of this work was to study
different type of wastes biogas generation by dry anaerobic digestion technology. This
study was carried out for ten weeks in batch type digestion by dry anaerobic digestion of
kitchen waste (KW), agricultural waste (AW) and market waste (MW) co digestion with
cow dung and urine at 33.3 % of total waste. A total 300 kg of waste for each three
treatment group was digested for 49 days. Three digester were operated under each
treatment group. Total solid percentage in Treatment 1 (KW, Cow dung, urine),
Treatment 2 (AW, Cow dung, urine) and Treatment 3 (MW, Cow dung, urine)
17.34±0.39 %, 19.70±0.44 % and 18.52±0.73% respectively. C/N ratio of KW, AW,
MW, CD and urine (28.82 ±1.52, 32.72± 0.28, 30.30 ± 1.03, 24.75 ±0.30, 4.36± 4.55
respectively) highest in AW. Significant variation (p<0.05) were observed among T1, T2
and T3, in gas production, highest gas production was recorded at 40-49 days. Because
dry digestion process require high retention period. The temperature ranged from 20ºC to
36ºC during ten weeks. The results indicated that biogas production was 1.48±0.28, 1.30
± 0.06 and 1.29± 0.07 m³ from T1, T2 and T3 respectively at 1
st
week. After a batch
study, at 7
th
week cumulative biogas production was 50.78±0.48 m³ observed in digester
containing MW with cattle dung which was significant (p<0.05) as compared to other
reactor. Methane content was recorded for all the digester between 60-65%. As digestion
period increases the biogas production was also increased because wastes used in this
research work contain more lignin, cellulose and silica therefore it takes more time for
digestion. A lot of variation in daily biogas production was also recorded due to
fluctuating pH, mixing and other environmental condition. The digestate remaining after
biogas production need no further treatment for using as fertilizer, pH and total carbon
has no significant variable, total nitrogen content (7.18, 6.74, 7.96 mg/g) was significant
among T1, T2 and T3. So, it can be concluded that the treatment of (T3) MW with cow
dung and urine considered as the best compared to other treatment and it can be suggested
as field level application
AGROECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF JACKFRUIT BASED AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM AND VALUE-ADDED PRODUCT OF JACKFRUIT IN NETROKONA DISTRICT

AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCEThe present study was carried out at three unions of Netrokona Sadar to identify the
different types of jackfruit-based Agroforestry systems, the value-added products of
jackfruit and the problems faced by the respondents. A simple random sampling technique
was adopted to collect the necessary information through a structured questionnaire from
60 respondents during January to December 2020. Based on crop condition, a total of 4
jackfruit-based agroforestry systems were identified and the highest net return (74800 Tk.
/ ha) and BCR 2.01 was obtained from the Jackfruit-Rice based Agroforestry system. The
discounted benefit cost ratio (1.26) and the internal rate of return (41.91%) clearly indicated
that Jackfruit-based agroforestry system was productive and profitable for this region.
About 60% respondents have no knowledge about value added product of Jackfruit, 56%
respondents identified traditional methods of processing and 56% respondents identified
no standard post-harvest handling practices as problem of value addition in jackfruit. Most
of the farmers (65%) identified high price of inputs and 63.33% respondents identified
inadequate storage facilities as problems faced by them. Therefore, a standard post-harvest
handling practices and value addition is needed for improving economic potentiality of
jackfruit
FIELD OBSERVATION OF SELECTED MUNGBEAN CULTIVARS AGAINST Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) AND ITS MOLECULAR DETECTION

An experiment was conducted in field and laboratory condition under the
Department of Plant Pathology of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,
Dhaka-1207 during 2020-2021. The field experiment was carried out in
Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications to
observe the field performances of ten selected mungbean cultivars and
molecular study was done in Molecular Biology and Plant Virology
Laboratory. From the field experiment results, it was revealed that three
varieties namely BARI mung-7, BARI mung-8 and BINAmoog-9 showed
moderately resistance and lower disease severity against Mungbean yellow
mosaic virus (MYMV). Among the remaining selected varieties, four varieties
namely BARI mung-5, BARI mung-6, BINAmoog-5 and BINAmoog-8
showed moderately susceptible whereas BU mug1, Sonamug and Chaitamug
appeared as susceptible to highly susceptible and higher disease severity
against MYMV. Field study results were approved by the molecular study
through PCR test. All the tested varieties remained PCR positive which
revealed that every single variety was MYMV infected. Different growth
parameters and yield contributing characters were also studied. Among the
tested varieties, the tallest plant found in BARI mung-7 and the shortest was in
Chaitamug. Maximum number of branches per plant was obtained in the BARI
mung-7 and minimum was obtained in BU mug1. The highest and the lowest
total chlorophyll content were recorded in BARI mung-7 and Chaitamug
respectively. The highest number of pods per plant was recorded in BARI
mung-8 and the lowest was recorded in Sonamug. Maximum pod length was
observed in BARI mung-7 and minimum length was observed in Chaitamug. In
terms of number of seed per pod, the highest and lowest results were found in
BARI mung-8 and Chaitamug respectively. Pod sterility percentage was
maximum in Chaitamug and minimum in BARI mung-7. The highest weight
of 1000-seed was recorded in BARI mung-6 and the lowest was recorded in
BARI mung-8.The highest yield per plot was obtained from BARI mung-7 and
the lowest yield per plot was obtained from Chaitamug. From the study, it was
observed that minimum disease incidence and severity were appeared on BARI
mung-7 in natural field condition and gave the best performances in respect of
yield and yield contributing characters

Chitosan raw
material powder strongly improved the seedling
characters at low temperature conditions, yield and yield attributing characters of
BRRI dhan88. Thus, for cultivation of BRRI dhan88, it is suggested that optimum
level (0.4%) of chitosan raw material powder could be applied in the seedbed soil
along with transplanting young (35 days old) seedling perform well for obtaining
higher grain yield
REGENERATION OF POTATO (SOLANUM TUBEROSUM L.) BY UTILIZING A NEW COMPOSITION OF STOCK SOLUTION-1 FOR PLANT TISSUE CULTURE MEDIUM

for plantlet regeneration of potato using different new composition of stock
solution-1. Three chemicals viz. chemi-i, chemi-ii and chemi-iii were used in
stock solution-1 as an alternate of ammonium nitrate. Eight different
treatments were designed with those chemicals including Murashige and
Skoog (1962) culture media as a check treatment (T
). Two potato varieties
viz. Diamant and Asterix were used for in vitro regeneration. The Diamant
variety showed the best regeneration potentiality in the T

, which consists of

PREVALENCE OF DIFFERENT DISEASES OF CATTLE IN SELECTED DAIRY FARMS AT RAIPURA UPAZILA, NARSINGDI

MEDICINEThe study was conducted to ascertain the prevalence of different diseases of dairy
cattle in selected dairy farms at Raipura upazila, Narsingdi. It was conducted during
the period from January to December, 2021. During the study period a total of 25
owners or attendants were interviewed and an entire of 200 cattle were examined and
analyzed where 44 were identified with different diseases. Each of the clinical case
was diagnosed on the basis of history, general examination, physical examination and
clinical findings. The overall prevalence of different diseases was 22 % in study area.
Among the clinical cases, mastitis 13.63% was the highest in all recorded cases.
Furthermore, Lumpy Skin Disease 11.36%, Foot and Mouth Disease 9.1%,
pneumonia 6.82%, bloat 6.82%, navel ill 6.82%, bovine ephemeral fever 4.54%,
diarrhea 4.54%, endoparasitic infestation 4.54%, acidosis 2.27% and retained placenta
2.27% etc. were also commonly recorded. It was noted that local breed (68.18%) were
highly susceptible for different diseases and disorders than cross breed (31.82%)
cattle. In relation to age, >3 years aged cattle (43.18%) were found more infected with
diseases as compared with 1-4 years aged cattle (31.82%) and <1year aged (25%)
cattle. Among the seasonal cases, summer season (40.91%) had higher prevalence of
different diseases of dairy cattle than rainy season (34.1%) followed by winter season
(25%) in study area. From the study it was evident that dairy in study area cattle were
infected with different diseases and caused a huge economic losses to farmers.
Immunoprophylaxis and hygienic management should be initiated to curb the
prevalence of common diseases in dairy cattle. So further epidemiological and
laboratory study should be needed to confirm the etiology, prevention and control
measures of the diseases in dairy cattle at study area
