EFFECT OF MAIZE-LEGUMES INTERCROPPING ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MAIZE

AGRONOMYA field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka
during the period from October-2021 to February-2022 in Rabi season, to study the effect
of maize-legumes intercropping on growth and yield of maize. The experiment consisted
of single factors, and followed Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three
replications. Four intercropping systems viz: T

used in this study. Significant differences in maize growth, yield attributes and yields
were found among the various intercropping systems. The highest plant height of maize

suggested that maize + soybean + grasspea intercropping system was found to be the best
intercropping system for higher grain production
FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF BEEF FATTENING IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSThe present study was designed to measure the financial profitability of beef fattening
farmers and to estimate the resource use efficiency of beef fattening production in some
selected areas of Jhenidah district in Bangladesh. Primary data were collected from 50
farmers in two upazilas of Jhenidah district following random sampling method. Both
tabular and statistical analyses were applied in this study. The major findings of the
study revealed that beef fattening was profitable. Total cost of production was Tk.
1,41,558.9 per cow. Gross returns was Tk. 1,73,797.7 and net returns was Tk. 32,238.8.
Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was found to be 1.23. Production function analysis suggested
that, among the variables included in the model, feed cost had negative and significant
effect, purchasing cost of calf and medicine and vaccination cost had a positive and
significant effect on profitability. On the other hand, electricity cost had negative and
insignificant effect , water cost and labour cost had positive but insignificant effect on
the gross return of beef fattening production. This study also identified some of the
problems and constraints associated with beef fattening production. High price of feed
was the main problem of beef fattening. The problems and constraints, of course, are
interrelated with one another and hence, need to be removed comprehensively through
an integrated programme for the overall development of beef fattening
PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF SWEET PEPPER ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD UNDER PROTECTED STRUCTURES

2022 in Rabi season to perform a study on the performance of different varieties of
sweet pepper on the growth and yield under protected structures. The experiment

different protected structures and varieties significantly influenced the growth and yield
of sweet pepper. In case of protective structures, the highest yield per plant (0.81 kg),
yield per plot (5.65 kg) and yield per hectare (50.83 t) were obtained from T
2
(Net
house) treatment. Among different variety, V
2
(BARI Mistimorich 2) variety gave the
highest yield per plant (0.72 kg), yield per plot (5.00 kg) and yield per hectare (45.00 t)
of sweet pepper. In case of combination treatment, the highest yield per plant (0.94 kg),
yield per plot (6.53 kg), yield per hectare (58.75 t) and benefit cost ratio (BCR) were
obtained from the treatment combination T
2
V
2
(Net house + BARI Mistimorich 2)
comparable to other treatment combination. Therefore, it was suggested that cultivation
of BARI Mistimorich 2 along with net house (T
2
V
2
) combination treatment would help
to influence plant growth and increase its ability to enhanced better yield and quality
production of sweet pepper
ANTIDIABETIC EFFECT OF ALOE VERA IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RAT
Oral anti-diabetic agents have a number of serious adverse effects, thus, managing diabetes without any
side effects is still a challenge. Therefore, the search for many effective and safer hypoglycemic agents
has continued to be an important area of investigation. Besides, drug classically used for the treatment of
diabetes (insulin, sulphonylureas, biguanides and thazolidinediones), several species of plants have been
described in the scientific and popular literatures having a hypoglycemic activity. The aim of this research
was to investigate the effect of Aloe vera on blood glucose level in rats in diabetic condition. In this study
a total of 150 rats (50 normal rats and 100 alloxan induced diabetic rats) were used for five trials. The rats
were divided into three groups for each trial, each containing 10 individuals as follows: Group A is the
control, Group B as diabetic control and Group C were diabetic rat received Aloe vera. Then alloxan
injection was injected at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body weight through intra-peritoneal route to each rat to
induce diabetes in groups B and C. Aqueous extract of Aloe vera were fed by gavage at a dose of 300
mg/kg body weight daily for 21 days in group C. On the 10th day blood glucose level and the body
weights were measured for the first time to ensure diabetic induction. Then all the rats of this group were
kept for more 21 days for the treatment of diabetic condition. During experimental period, day 0, 7, 14 and
21 blood samples were collected from all groups and determined their blood sugar level using diabetic kit.
After 3 weeks of treatment the blood glucose level significantly (P<0.001) reduced in the group C
compared to B from 260± 11.53 mg/dl to 91.21 ± 3.67 mg/dl. On the other hand, the average body weight
was increased significantly (P<0.001) from 260 gm to 279.88 gm in the group C compared to
that of B. From our findings, it is concluded that Aloe vera can be used as anti-diabetogenic agent in food
CATTLE FEEDING PRACTICES FOLLOWED BY FARMERS ADJACENT TO DHAKA CITY: CHALLENGES FOR SUSTAINABLE CATTLE NUTRITION

ANIMAL NUTRITIONThe study was undertaken to explore the present cattle feeding practices followed by farmers
adjacent to Dhaka city, to collect mixed concentrate feed for crude protein analysis and find out
the challenges of cattle rearing in selected areas. A field survey was conducted to collect data
from 50 farmers of Mohammadpur, Keranigonj and Sher-e-Bangla nagar in Dhaka district with a
pretested survey questionnaire. The collected mixed concentrate feed samples were evaluated
through crude protein analysis. Results showed that farmers used rice straw, different types of
cultivated grass such as jumboo, napier, maize, kolmilota, panchun grass as roughage source and
wheat bran, rice bran, broken rice, lentil bran, mugbean bran, blackgram bran, broken maize,
chickpea bran, soyameal, soyabean bran, cow mixture standard, bipro cattle feed, jaker dairy
mixed feed as concentrate source. Most of the farms were medium size farm (27). Number of
cattle per small, medium and large scale farm were 4.5, 11.19 and 86.23 respectively. Milch cow
per small, medium and large scale farm was 10, 167 and 741 respectively. Total cow was found
in small ,medium and large scale farm in 18, 302 and 1639 respectively. Most of the farmers
reared cross breed cattle (87.76%) and indigenous and cross breed reared only 9.69% and 2.55%.
Average concentrated feed provided per dairy cow in small, medium and large scale farm was
4.9kg, 6.23kg and 8.30kg. Milk production liter/cow in small, medium and large scale farm was
10.3litre, 13.5litre and 15.4litre respectively. Green grass provided to cattle per day in small,
medium and large scale farm was 8.33kg, 9.50kg and 9.64kg respectively. Straw provided to
cattle per day in small, medium and large scale farm was 1.94kg, 1.72kg and 1.99kg
respectively. The average price per kg of wheat bran in small, medium and large scale farm was
TK. 50.5, 46.29, 44.75 respectively. Average price per kg of rice bran in small, medium and
large scale farm was Tk.17.15, 16.88, 16.45 respectively. The average price per kg of lentil bran
in per farm was Tk.28.67, 27.62 and 26.55 respectively. 70% Farm owner cultivated green grass.
Farmers cultivated green grass such as jumboo, maize, napier, kolmilota, panchun and khesari.
Most of the farmers cultivated jumboo grasses (54%). Chopper and cleaner machine used 72%
farm owner. Milking machine used only 26%. Farmers got training only 8% and 92% farmers
have no training facility. Average CP% in mixed concentrate feed in small, medium and large
scale farm was 16.3, 18.2 and 19.6 respectively. Shortage of green grass showed from January to
February 12%, from September to October 14% and there was no rest of the shortage 74% of the
month of the year. 50 farm owner claimed higher price of feed as the key challenges and farmers
suggested that reducing feed cost was the primary solution to overcome the challenges regarding
cattle feeding
VALUE CHAIN ANALYSIS OF TOMATO IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF MANIKGANJ DISTRICT

level to the ultimate consumer referred to as the value chain. In Bangladesh tomato
value chain starting from producer then there may have many intermediary channels
like tomato producer, Faria, Bepari, Wholesaler, Retailer and Consumer etc. The
study was conducted at saturia and singair upazila under Manikganj district. To
identify the actors involved in value chain and their function in tomato marketing,
to estimate the value addition of tomato by the actors in tomato market, to identify
the constraints of tomato marketing and suggest measure for the improvement of
tomato marketing in the selected area. The selected samples included 70 (Farmer
25, faria 10, bepari 10, wholesaler 10 and retailer 15). In the study areas there are
five value chain included. In this study cost and margin analysis of tomato, cost of
production, variable cost, fixed cost, gross cost, gross return, gross margin, net
return, value addition, marketing cost, market price calculated. Value addition of
farmer is 25.16%, bepari is 22.63% and faria is 7.37% and wholesaler is 31.72%.
Marketing cost of retailer is 1.30 tk/kg, wholesaler is 3.62 tk/kg, bapari is 1.84 tk/kg
and faria is 0.70 tk/kg. Net marketing margin of retailer is 2.15 tk/kg, wholesaler is
2.20 tk/kg, bapari 0.47 tk/kg and faria is 0.29 tk/kg. Proper credit facility, fertilizer
supply, seed supply, irrigation facilities, electricity supply and transport facility
should be improve for tomato development in Bangladesh
AN ASSESSMENT OF GUAVA YIELD LOSS AS PERCEIVED BY THE FARMERS

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMThe objectives of this study were to describe some selected characteristics of the guava
farmers; to determine the extent of guava yield losses as perceived by the farmers and
to find out the contributory factors of guava yield losses farmer selected characteristics.
The study was conducted with randomly selected 105 guava farmers in Chuadanga
sadar and Damurhuda upazilas of Chuadanga district. A pre-tested interview schedule
was used to collect data from the respondents during 28

November, 2022. Assessment of guava yield losses as perceived by the farmers was the
dependent variable and its was measured on the basis of guava yield losses scores.
Assessment of guava yield losses as perceived by the farmers and the ten selected
characteristics of the respondents contributed the independent variables of the study.
Multiple regression was used to examine the contribution of the selected characteristics
of the respondents. The highest proportion (54.28 percent) of the guava farmers
perceived medium loss followed by 21.91 percent low losses and 23.81 percent high
production losses. Three characteristics of the respondent’s viz. education, knowledge
on guava cultivation and problem faced in guava cultivation of the respondents had
significant contribution with their guava yield loss as perceived by the farmers
IMPROVEMENT OF BORO SEEDLING STRENGTH AND YIELD THROUGH SEED PRIMING AND SEEDBED SOIL AMENDMENT

on yield performance of a rice variety (BRRI dhan84) as influenced by the effects of
seed priming with salicylic acid (SA) and using organic material (Shrimp Shell
Powder, SSPd) in the seedbed. Fourteen (14inches) size plastic pots were used in the
experiment having height (10.5inches) and diameter (9.5inches). The pots were filled
with 10 kg SAU field moist soils having the texture silty clay loam soil. The

had remarkable effect on the disease incidence and severity of grey blight, yield and

(PDI) and the highest yield (934.3 kg/ha) was recorded in case of treatment T

The highest PDI (84%) and the lowest yield (357.6 kg/ha) was counted in case of

(control). The disease severity (PDI) and yield were varied in case of
other treatments on the basis of number of fungicide spraying. Using the varied
disease severity (PDI) and corresponding yield, the mathematical yield loss

LIVELIHOOD AND ADOPTION DETERMINANTS OF DROUGHT TOLERANCE RICE VARIETIES IN NORTHWESTERN AREAS OF BANGLADESH

MANAGEMENT AND FINANCEFood insecurity in Bangladesh is exacerbated by the vulnerability of the country's rice
industry to climate-related risks like drought. Adoption of rice types resistant to drought
can significantly boost output, the availability of food grains, and income. The objective of
this study was to identify the adoption determinants of drought tolerance rice variety and
to compare the livelihood status between drought tolerance rice variety adopter and nonadopter.

were chosen randomly to achieve these goals were questioned. The total sample
was separated into two groups: adopters, and non-adopters. Binary Logistic Regression
Model identifies factors affecting the adoption of drought tolerance rice varieties, where
experience, training on drought tolerance rice variety, extension contact, and knowledge of
drought tolerance rice variety have a positive impact and significant at 1%, 5% and 10%
level, while age has a negative impact on adoption. Finally, the study compares the
livelihood components of adopter and non-adopter farmers and finds that natural, physical,
and financial capital are higher for adopters, while human and social capital are higher for
non-adopters. The overall livelihood index for drought tolerance rice varieties growers
(0.62) was higher for non-adopter compared to adopter (0.61). The adoption of droughttolerant
rice varieties was impacted by four key variables had positive impact, while age
had a negative impact. Adopters had higher natural, physical, and financial capital whereas
non-adopters had higher human and social capital
