    DEVELOPMENT OF CANOLA GRADE INDIAN MUSTARD (Brassica juncea) VARlETY TO MEET THE EDIBLE OIL SECURITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE CHALLENGES IN BANGLADESH

    Abstract Erucic acid >2% in mustard oil is considered as unhealthy as edible oil and antinutritional for human consumption. The existing all mustard varieties of Bangladesh contain 40-48% erucic acid, which is a big concern for food and nutritional security and safety of the country. Hence, to develop canola grade mustard variety, six Bangladeshi Brassica juncea mustard variety were crossed with a canola grade double zero B. juncea line in 7x7 half diallel fashion. The developed 21 F] hybrids along with their parents were evaluated for yield contributing traits and fatty acid compassions. High narrow sense heritability was observed in days to pod maturity, while plant height, days to first flowering and seeds per siliquae showed moderate narrow sense heritability. The parental lines, PI, P3 and P4 were found as the best general combiner for earliness and dwarfness and, P2 and P7 showed the best combiner for yield contributing traits. Whereas, the hybrid lines, G3, G11 and G 13 indicated the best specific combiners for yield attributes, and the crosses, G6, G17 and G21 found for early maturity. The hybrid G3, G5 and G17 manifested the highest heterosis for early maturity over the check variety BARI sharisha 11. In the fatty acid compositions analysis, the crosses G19-54, G5-S 1 and G21-S I contained low erucic acid. In hybrids, total saturated fatty acid and mono-unsaturated fatty acid was ranged from 10.81% to 16.53% and 40.60% to 59.18%, respectively. The highest ratio of oleic acid (0)-9) to linoleic (0)-6) acid was found in P6, G5-S 1 and G 19-54. Moreover, P6, G19-54 and G19-52 showed the highest ratio of linoleic (CD-6)to linolenic (CD3) acid. The selected F] hybrid lines were further backcrossed to the selected Bangladeshi parents to reduce the growth duration and the seven types of BC] F] and BC2F] lines were developed. Altogether, the hybrids viz., G4, G5, G7, Gl1, G17, G19, G21 and lines ofBC]F" BC]F2and BC2F] could be utilized to develop early matured, high yielding low erucic acid containing improved mustard variety.     ADOPTION OF ECO-FRIENDLY AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGIES IN BANGLADESH: ROLE OF ACCESS TO FINANCE

Considering global climate change and country’s environment issues eco-friendly agricultural technologies (EAT) gaining its popularity among the farmers. However, lack of capital often hinder the adoption of EAT. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify whether access to finance increase the likelihood and level of adoption of EAT in Bangladesh. A total of 270 vegetable farmers were selected randomly from two districts i.e., Cumilla and Narsingdi. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect necessary data. The collected data were then analyzed by using the Binary Logit, Poisson and Tobit regression. The findings suggested that access to finance positively affected adoption of EAT while the distance of bank and NGO from the vegetable farmers house negatively influenced the likelihood of adopting EAT. Moreover, access to finance increase the level of adoption of EAT. Besides, location, education, mobile phone usage, mass media usage and membership of IPM club positively and significantly affected the EAT adoption. In terms of policy perspective, the likelihood and level of EAT adoption can be increased through ensuring easy access to finance, increasing access to extension services and familiarizing EAT practices among the farmers by mobile and mass media

    HYGIENE PRACTICES OF TABLE EGGS AT DIFFERENT WET MARKET IN SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR AREA OF DHAKA NORTH CITY CORPORATION: A PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Animal science & veterinary medicine Sher-E-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ANIMAL NUTRITIONThe study was carried out at different wet market of table eggs in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka North City Corporation focusing on the hygienic practice of table egg vendors. It was done by survey and lab test of microbiological analysis of eggshell surface. A questionnaire was used that included the knowledge about food hygiene, egg handling, collection, transportation, storage, disposal procedure etc. Survey findings revealed that, most of the vendors of the selected area completed primary education level (52%), whereas only 6% completed Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), 34% completed Secondary School Certificate (SSC), and the rest 8% were illiterate. Although many of them were literate, their knowledge about food hygiene was found to be very poor. The results showed that, only 4% vendors wash their hands before and after handling of egg where 96% vendors didn’t wash hands before and after handling of eggs. It also revealed that, only 6% vendors dumped the broken eggs into drain whereas most of the vendors (94%) sold the broken eggs to customer, hotel and restaurant. So, there was a great chance of spreading the diseases if the eggs were contaminated. After completing the survey, laboratory test was conducted to find out pathogen presence in eggshell surface. Different egg samples were collected from different wet market of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area and analyzed for Total Salmonella Count (TSC) and Total Coliform Count (TCC) in egg shell surface. These microbial test was performed to enumerate bacterial load and to determine the contamination and unhygienic conditions of egg handling. A total of 50 eggs (25 dirty & 25 clean eggs) were subjected to identify the presence of bacteria on eggshell surface. The highest value of TSC, TCC of both dirty eggs and clean eggs of eggshell were log 6.3, log 6.34, log 5.00, and log 5.11, respectively. The bacterial load was found highest in dirty eggs compared to clean eggs. Therefore, good hygienic practice is essential for safe handling of eggs. For this reason, appropriate action should be taken among the egg vendors as soon as possible by the government, particularly by the municipal authority

    LINKING FRONT-LEVEL EXTENSION WORKERS’ COMPETENCE TO FARMERS’ SATISFACTION: A THREE SKILL PERSPECTIVE

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMThe present study conducted a comprehensive investigation for assessing the front-level extension workers’ performance based on their level of competence from farmers’ perspective. Famers’ satisfaction with agriculture and extension service was considered as the dependent variable, while three skills, viz. conceptual, technical and interpersonal skills of front-level extension professionals (here, SAAOs), were considered as the predictor variables of the study. Data were collected from 120 farmers using a structured interview schedule. Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation Modeling was used to test the data using SmartPLS v.4 application. Results showed that three skills jointly contributed 71.5% of the variance in farmers’ satisfaction (R =0.715). Concerning the contribution of each selected skill, conceptual skill (β= 0.369; p<0.000) was found to be the strongest contributor, followed by interpersonal skill (β= 0.373; p<0.000) and then technical skill (β= 0.166; p<0.045) respectively. Farmers were highly satisfied with SAAOs’ competence and found that three skills have an impact on satisfaction with extension service. To conclude, this study sufficiently offers several practical and theoretical recommendations about proper and effective structuring of the competence of SAAOs in agricultural extension service delivery that would be helpful for the policymakers or for further research

    PERFORMANCE OF CAULIFLOWER AS INTERCROP UNDER MORINGA BASED AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM

An experiment was done to find out the effect of planting distances on growth, yield and yield attributing characters of cauliflower with four year old of Moringa tree. Randomized Complete Block Design was followed comprising of four treatments namely T 1 ii , T 2 , T 3 and T 4 (50, 100, 150 cm distance from Moringa tree base and open field) with four replications. Maximum number of leaves (15.20), stem diameter (1.45 cm), full weight (753.68 g), curd weight (421.18 g), dry (19.98 g) weight of leaves, fresh weight of root (24.45 g) etc. were found in T 4 treatment. The lowest number of leaves (13.65), leaf length (31.23 cm), full weight (459.03 g), curd weight (290.58 g), fresh (155.23 g) and dry (13.53 g) weight of leaves were found in T 1 treatment. The second highest results were found in T 3 treatment such as leaf length (32.50 cm), leaf breadth (13.68 cm), stem diameter (1.30 cm), full weight (638.45 g), curd weight (391.85 g) etc. The highest Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) was found in T 3 treatment which was 1.89 and higher planting distance had positive correlation with almost all parameters. Estimated model predicted that optimum proximity of cauliflower from four year old Moringa tree would be approximately 250 cm. Hence, indicating farmer may cultivate cauliflower in association with four year old Moringa tree maintaining 250 cm distance (T 3 )

    EVALUATION OF SEX PHEROMONE AND CHEMICAL INSECTICIDES FOR CONTROLLING BRINJAL SHOOT AND FRUIT BORER (BSFB)

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN ENTOMOLOGYA field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to evaluate the efficacy of sex pheromone and chemical insecticides for controlling brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB), cultivated during rabi season (October, 2020 to March, 2021). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental treatments were T 1 Pheromone trap at canopy level; T 3 : Pheromone trap at upper canopy level; T 2 : Pheromone trap at lower canopy level; T 4 Marshal 20 EC (carbosalfan) at 7 days interval; T 5 Spraying of Marshal 20 EC (carbosalfan) at 7 days interval; T 6 : Spraying of : Pheromone trap at upper canopy level + + Spraying of Marshal 20 EC (carbosalfan) at 7 days interval; T 7 : Pheromone trap at canopy level canopy level + Spraying of Marshal 20 EC (carbosalfan) at 7 days interval; and T 8 : Pheromone trap at lower control. Pheromone trap setting at canopy level performed the best results to suppress BSFB compare then the other setting positions like upper and lower canopy level. Treatment T 6 contributed to reduce the percent shoot and fruit (by number and weight) infestation (7.99%, 3.83% and 12.22%, respectively) of brinjal and also obtained the highest weight of edible portion of infested fruits, fruit length, fruit girth, single fruit weight and yield (0.23 kg, 11.03 cm, 13.37 cm, 39.11 gm and 14.89 ton/ha, respectively). Therefore, it could be concluded that, the pheromone trap setting at canopy level with the spraying of Marshal 20EC (carbosalfan) at 7 days interval could be the best treatment for controlling brinjal shoot and fruit borer in brinjal field

    EFFECT OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZER APPLICATION ON RICE PRODUCTION (BRRI dhan28)

The experiment consisted of eight treatments viz. T 1 (control; no organic or inorganic fertilizer), T 2 (100% RDCF; N 100 P 15 K 45 S 20 Zn 3 kg ha -1 ), T 3 (only poultry manure; 100% N), T 4 (only vermicompost; 100% N), T 5 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha -1 + 50% poultry manure),T 6 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha -1 + 50% vermicompost), T 7 (25% RDCF; 25% NPKSZn kg ha -1 + 75% poultry manure) and T 8 (25% RDCF; 25% NPKSZn kg ha + 75% vermicompost). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A significant variation was observed among the treatments due to different levels of organic and inorganic nutrient sources. The treatment T 2 (100% RDCF; N 100 P 15 K 45 S 20 Zn 3 kg ha -1 ) exposed the highest plant height at (92.12 cm) and the treatment T 6 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha -1 + 50% vermicompost) showed the highest number of tillers hill -1 (17.24) whereas control treatment T 1 (no organic or inorganic fertilizer) showed the minimum results in both plant height and tillers hill -1 . Again, the treatment T 6 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha + 50% vermicompost) produced the highest number of effective tillers hill -1 (15.87), flag leaf length (21.64 cm), number of filled grains panicle -1 (129.20), panicle length (23.52 cm), grain yield (5.32 t ha -1 ), straw yield (6.14 t ha -1 ), biological yield (11.46 t ha ) and harvest index (46.42%) followed by T 5 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha + 50% poultry manure) whereas the control treatment T 1 (no organic or inorganic fertilizer) showed the lowest results in all the parameters. In case of post-harvest soil, different treatments of organic and inorganic fertilizers and their combinations showed no significant variation on pH and organic carbon content but available N, available P, exchangeable K, available S and available Zn content of postharvest soil affected significantly. The treatment T 6 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha + 50% vermicompost) showed highest available N (1.52%), available P (24.52 ppm), exchangeable K (1.216 meq/100g soil), available S (26.44 ppm) and available Zn (0.174 ppm) whereas the lowest available P and available S content was obtained from control treatment T 1 (no organic or inorganic fertilizer). So, the treatment T 6 (50% RDCF; 50% NPKSZn kg ha -1 + 50% vermicompost) can be considered as a potential onefor higher rice production (BRRI dhan28)

    SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF FLORICULTURE ON FARMERS’ LIVELIHOOD: A STUDY IN DHAKA, BANGLADESH

Roses, marigolds, tuberoses, and gladioli may all be grown in Bangladesh because of the country's mild temperature and fertile soil. The objectives of this study were to comprehend the socioeconomic traits of flower farmers, evaluate the effects of floriculture on their lives using indicators of livelihood outcomes, and pinpoint the challenges farmers encounter when growing flowers. Using random sampling strategy, primary data were gathered through interviews with a sample of 100 flower-growing farmers from the Birulia union in Savar Upazila, Bangladesh.The primary data were collected from 22 November to 20 December,2022. Both Quantative and Qualatative Data Analysis Methods were used.The results showed that the average size of their small to mediumsized farms was 1.50 hectares. 4.94 lakh Taka was the typical yearly household income from floriculture. Using five indicators—food security, ability to battle vulnerability and poverty, resiliency to natural disasters, adaptability to seasonality impacts, cost-effectiveness and profitability—the study also assessed the benefits of floriculture on farmers' livelihoods. The research showed that floriculture boosted farmers' resilience to natural catastrophes, increased their ability to resist vulnerabilities and shocks, and contributed to food security. The majority of farmers were able to overcome seasonal impacts and generated profits even if other participants experienced difficulties during the lean season. Farmers thought that as a result of better living circumstances, they were better able to manage risks and disruptions and maintain their level of life. The study identified a number of difficulties faced by flower farmers, including viral diseases, high labor costs, severe water shortages, transportation issues, challenges with flower processing, insufficient credit support, intermediaries' influence on flower prices, limited familiarity with old cultivation techniques,insufficient marketing facilities, and a lack of suitable selling locations. Overall, Bangladesh's flower farming sector has demonstrated tremendous potential for expansion and social advancement. Flower farmers may further improve their lives, support rural development, and boost their profitability in both local and foreign markets by addressing the issues and putting the suggested solutions into practice

    POTENTIAL MANAGEMENT PACKAGES ON INCIDENCE AND DAMAGE SEVERITY BY MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF FRENCH BEAN

The experiment consisted of six different treatments viz T 1 = Spraying Bio-neem plus botanical insecticide @ 0.5 ml/L at the 7 days intervals; T 2 = Larval parasitoid + Bamper 20SL (Imidacloprid) @ 0.5 ml/L at the 15 days intervals; T 3 =Field sanitation + Shobicron 425EC (profenofos + cypermethrin) @ 2ml/L at the 15 days intervals; T 4 =Actara 25WG (Thiamethoxam) @ 0.3g/L at the 15 days intervals; T 5 = Larval parasitoid + Yellow sticky board traps; and T 6 = Untreated control. The design of experiment was randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. Bean pod borer, jassid, whitefly, aphid, winged black aphid and epilachna beetle were found in infest french bean. Among different treatments, T 3 showed the best performance followed by T 2 treatment, whereas the lowest performance in T 6 (Untreated control) for controlling incidence and infestation of major insect pests of french bean. At the vegetative and reproductive stage of French bean, the lowest percent of infestation in case of aphid (16.03 and 10.59%), jassid (8.95 and 11.51%), whitefly (2.59 and 6.70%) and winged black aphid (4.84 and (9.08%) were recorded in T 3 treatment, whereas the highest in T 6 (59.76 and 30.35%, 48.15 and 48.54%, 11.98 and 22.32%, 18.64 and 25.73%) treatment respectively. In case of bean pod borer, the highest % of infestation reduction over control at the early, mid and late reproductive stages of french bean in number basis (83.28, 77.11 and 77.76) and in weight basis (74.70, 76.14 and 80.89) in T 3 treatment, whereas the lowest in T 6 (54.49, 55.52, 54.98 and 53.34, 61.86, 68.89) treatment respectively. The overall result indicates that, the order effectiveness of the potential management practices against incidence and damage severity of major insect pests of french bean was T 3 > T 1 > T 4 > T 5 > T 6

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF POTATO (BARI Alu-25; ASTORIX) AS INFLUENCED BY INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT

T 1 (150 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP - only inorganic), T 2 (130 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 20 kg N/ha from vermicompost), T 3 (110 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 40 kg N/ha from vermicompost), T 4 (90 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 60 kg N/ha from vermicompost), T 5 (70 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 80 kg N/ha from vermicompost), T 6 (50 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 100 kg N/ha from vermicompost), T 7 (30 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 120 kg N/ha from vermicompost), T 8 (150 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 40 kg N/ha from vermicompost) and T 9 (control; no nutrient application). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Significant variation among the treatments was found for most of the parameter due to different levels of integrated nutrient management practices. The treatment T 5 (70 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 80 kg N/ha from vermicompost) exhibited the minimum 15.3 days to 100% emergence. The maximum number of haulm hill -1 (7.50), fresh weight of haulm hill (185.60 g) and dry weight of haulm hill -1 (33.70 g), number of tuber hill (8.12), weight of tuber hill -1 (360.50 g), dry weight of 100 g fresh tuber (21.63 g), tuber weight plot (14.55 kg) and tuber yield ha -1 -1 (30.24 t) were obtained with T5 treatment followed by T 6 (50 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 100 kg N/ha from vermicompost) whereas the control treatment T 9 (no nutrient application) showed the lowest results in all parameters as well as on yield. There was non signification of soil pH, organic carbon and exchangeable K in postharvest soil but significant variation was found in case of total N, agailable P and available S. The treatment T 8 (150 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 40 kg N/ha from vermicompost) showed the highest N (0.273%), P (23.27 ppm) and S (28.20 ppm) content followed byT 5 (70 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 80 kg N/ha from vermicompost) whereas the lowest was obtained from control treatment. So, the treatment T 5 (70 kg N/ha from urea + 30 kg P/ha from TSP + 140 kg K/ha from MoP + 80 kg N/ha from vermicompost) may be considered as the best treatment for potato production (BARI Alu-25; ASTORIX)
