DEVELOPMENT OF CANOLA GRADE INDIAN MUSTARD (Brassica juncea) VARlETY TO MEET THE EDIBLE OIL SECURITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE CHALLENGES IN BANGLADESH
Abstract
Erucic acid >2% in mustard oil is considered as unhealthy as edible oil and antinutritional
for human consumption. The existing all mustard varieties of
Bangladesh contain 40-48% erucic acid, which is a big concern for food and
nutritional security and safety of the country. Hence, to develop canola grade
mustard variety, six Bangladeshi Brassica juncea mustard variety were crossed
with a canola grade double zero B. juncea line in 7x7 half diallel fashion. The
developed 21 F] hybrids along with their parents were evaluated for yield
contributing traits and fatty acid compassions. High narrow sense heritability was
observed in days to pod maturity, while plant height, days to first flowering and
seeds per siliquae showed moderate narrow sense heritability. The parental lines,
PI, P3 and P4 were found as the best general combiner for earliness and
dwarfness and, P2 and P7 showed the best combiner for yield contributing traits.
Whereas, the hybrid lines, G3, G11 and G 13 indicated the best specific combiners
for yield attributes, and the crosses, G6, G17 and G21 found for early maturity.
The hybrid G3, G5 and G17 manifested the highest heterosis for early maturity
over the check variety BARI sharisha 11. In the fatty acid compositions analysis,
the crosses G19-54, G5-S 1 and G21-S I contained low erucic acid. In hybrids,
total saturated fatty acid and mono-unsaturated fatty acid was ranged from
10.81% to 16.53% and 40.60% to 59.18%, respectively. The highest ratio of oleic
acid (0)-9) to linoleic (0)-6) acid was found in P6, G5-S 1 and G 19-54. Moreover,
P6, G19-54 and G19-52 showed the highest ratio of linoleic (CD-6)to linolenic (CD3)
acid. The selected F] hybrid lines were further backcrossed to the selected
Bangladeshi parents to reduce the growth duration and the seven types of BC] F]
and BC2F] lines were developed. Altogether, the hybrids viz., G4, G5, G7, Gl1,
G17, G19, G21 and lines ofBC]F" BC]F2and BC2F] could be utilized to develop
early matured, high yielding low erucic acid containing improved mustard variety.

ADOPTION OF ECO-FRIENDLY AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGIES IN BANGLADESH: ROLE OF ACCESS TO FINANCE

AGRICULTURAL FINANCE AND MANAGEMENTAs a disaster prone country the farmers of Bangladesh imprudently use excessive
pesticides and chemical fertilizer products which poses several environmental threats
e.g., ecological imbalances, soil squalor, biodiversity loss, and ecological devastation
and therefore make the country’s food security at stake. Considering global climate
change and country’s environment issues eco-friendly agricultural technologies (EAT)
gaining its popularity among the farmers. However, lack of capital often hinder the
adoption of EAT. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify whether access to
finance increase the likelihood and level of adoption of EAT in Bangladesh. A total of
270 vegetable farmers were selected randomly from two districts i.e., Cumilla and
Narsingdi. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect necessary data. The
collected data were then analyzed by using the Binary Logit, Poisson and Tobit
regression. The findings suggested that access to finance positively affected adoption
of EAT while the distance of bank and NGO from the vegetable farmers house
negatively influenced the likelihood of adopting EAT. Moreover, access to finance
increase the level of adoption of EAT. Besides, location, education, mobile phone
usage, mass media usage and membership of IPM club positively and significantly
affected the EAT adoption. In terms of policy perspective, the likelihood and level of
EAT adoption can be increased through ensuring easy access to finance, increasing
access to extension services and familiarizing EAT practices among the farmers by
mobile and mass media
HYGIENE PRACTICES OF TABLE EGGS AT DIFFERENT WET MARKET IN SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR AREA OF DHAKA NORTH CITY CORPORATION: A PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN

ANIMAL NUTRITIONThe study was carried out at different wet market of table eggs in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar
area of Dhaka North City Corporation focusing on the hygienic practice of table egg
vendors. It was done by survey and lab test of microbiological analysis of eggshell
surface. A questionnaire was used that included the knowledge about food hygiene, egg
handling, collection, transportation, storage, disposal procedure etc. Survey findings
revealed that, most of the vendors of the selected area completed primary education
level (52%), whereas only 6% completed Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), 34%
completed Secondary School Certificate (SSC), and the rest 8% were illiterate.
Although many of them were literate, their knowledge about food hygiene was found
to be very poor. The results showed that, only 4% vendors wash their hands before and
after handling of egg where 96% vendors didn’t wash hands before and after handling
of eggs. It also revealed that, only 6% vendors dumped the broken eggs into drain
whereas most of the vendors (94%) sold the broken eggs to customer, hotel and
restaurant. So, there was a great chance of spreading the diseases if the eggs were
contaminated. After completing the survey, laboratory test was conducted to find out
pathogen presence in eggshell surface. Different egg samples were collected from
different wet market of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area and analyzed for Total Salmonella
Count (TSC) and Total Coliform Count (TCC) in egg shell surface. These microbial
test was performed to enumerate bacterial load and to determine the contamination and
unhygienic conditions of egg handling. A total of 50 eggs (25 dirty & 25 clean eggs)
were subjected to identify the presence of bacteria on eggshell surface. The highest
value of TSC, TCC of both dirty eggs and clean eggs of eggshell were log 6.3, log 6.34,
log 5.00, and log 5.11, respectively. The bacterial load was found highest in dirty eggs
compared to clean eggs. Therefore, good hygienic practice is essential for safe handling
of eggs. For this reason, appropriate action should be taken among the egg vendors as
soon as possible by the government, particularly by the municipal authority
LINKING FRONT-LEVEL EXTENSION WORKERS’ COMPETENCE TO FARMERS’ SATISFACTION: A THREE SKILL PERSPECTIVE

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMThe present study conducted a comprehensive investigation for assessing the front-level
extension workers’ performance based on their level of competence from farmers’
perspective. Famers’ satisfaction with agriculture and extension service was considered
as the dependent variable, while three skills, viz. conceptual, technical and interpersonal
skills of front-level extension professionals (here, SAAOs), were considered as the
predictor variables of the study. Data were collected from 120 farmers using a
structured interview schedule. Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation
Modeling was used to test the data using SmartPLS v.4 application. Results showed
that three skills jointly contributed 71.5% of the variance in farmers’ satisfaction (R
=0.715). Concerning the contribution of each selected skill, conceptual skill (β= 0.369;
p<0.000) was found to be the strongest contributor, followed by interpersonal skill (β=
0.373; p<0.000) and then technical skill (β= 0.166; p<0.045) respectively. Farmers
were highly satisfied with SAAOs’ competence and found that three skills have an
impact on satisfaction with extension service. To conclude, this study sufficiently offers
several practical and theoretical recommendations about proper and effective
structuring of the competence of SAAOs in agricultural extension service delivery that
would be helpful for the policymakers or for further research
PERFORMANCE OF CAULIFLOWER AS INTERCROP UNDER MORINGA BASED AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM

distances on growth, yield and yield attributing characters of cauliflower with four

treatment. The lowest number of leaves (13.65), leaf length (31.23 cm), full weight
(459.03 g), curd weight (290.58 g), fresh (155.23 g) and dry (13.53 g) weight of

treatment such as leaf length (32.50 cm), leaf breadth (13.68 cm), stem diameter (1.30

had positive correlation with almost all parameters. Estimated model predicted that
optimum proximity of cauliflower from four year old Moringa tree would be

cm, 39.11 gm and 14.89 ton/ha, respectively). Therefore, it could be concluded that, the
pheromone trap setting at canopy level with the spraying of Marshal 20EC (carbosalfan) at 7
days interval could be the best treatment for controlling brinjal shoot and fruit borer in brinjal

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF FLORICULTURE ON FARMERS’ LIVELIHOOD: A STUDY IN DHAKA, BANGLADESH

DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY STUDIESBangladesh has seen a substantial increase in flower production over the past few
decades due to increased domestic and global demand. Roses, marigolds, tuberoses,
and gladioli may all be grown in Bangladesh because of the country's mild
temperature and fertile soil. The objectives of this study were to comprehend the
socioeconomic traits of flower farmers, evaluate the effects of floriculture on their
lives using indicators of livelihood outcomes, and pinpoint the challenges farmers
encounter when growing flowers. Using random sampling strategy, primary data were
gathered through interviews with a sample of 100 flower-growing farmers from the
Birulia union in Savar Upazila, Bangladesh.The primary data were collected from 22
November to 20 December,2022. Both Quantative and Qualatative Data Analysis
Methods were used.The results showed that the average size of their small to mediumsized
farms was 1.50 hectares. 4.94 lakh Taka was the typical yearly household
income from floriculture. Using five indicators—food security, ability to battle
vulnerability and poverty, resiliency to natural disasters, adaptability to seasonality
impacts, cost-effectiveness and profitability—the study also assessed the benefits of
floriculture on farmers' livelihoods. The research showed that floriculture boosted
farmers' resilience to natural catastrophes, increased their ability to resist
vulnerabilities and shocks, and contributed to food security. The majority of farmers
were able to overcome seasonal impacts and generated profits even if other
participants experienced difficulties during the lean season. Farmers thought that as a
result of better living circumstances, they were better able to manage risks and
disruptions and maintain their level of life. The study identified a number of
difficulties faced by flower farmers, including viral diseases, high labor costs, severe
water shortages, transportation issues, challenges with flower processing, insufficient
credit support, intermediaries' influence on flower prices, limited familiarity with old
cultivation techniques,insufficient marketing facilities, and a lack of suitable selling
locations. Overall, Bangladesh's flower farming sector has demonstrated tremendous
potential for expansion and social advancement. Flower farmers may further improve
their lives, support rural development, and boost their profitability in both local and
foreign markets by addressing the issues and putting the suggested solutions into
practice
POTENTIAL MANAGEMENT PACKAGES ON INCIDENCE AND DAMAGE SEVERITY BY MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF FRENCH BEAN

recorded in T
