    EFFECT OF ZINC AND BORON FERTILIZER ON YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF GROUNDNUT

    A Thesis Submitted to the Institute of Seed Technology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SEED TECHNOLOGYThe experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during April 2021 to August 2021 to study the effect of zinc and boron fertilizer on yield and seed quality of groundnut. The experiment consisted of two factors; Factor A: Zinc fertilizer (4 levels) viz., Zn : 0 kg zinc sulphate ha -1 (control), Zn 2 : 2.50 kg zinc sulphate ha ii -1 , Zn 3 1 : 5.00 kg zinc sulphate ha : 7.50 kg zinc sulphate ha -1 , and factor B: Foliar application of boron (4 levels) viz., B : Control (no boric acid L -1 of water), B 2 : 0.75 g boric acid L -1 of water (3.75 kg boric acid ha -1 ), B 3 : 1.00 g boric acid L -1 of water (5.00 kg boric acid ha -1 : 1.25 g boric acid L -1 of water (6.25 kg boric acid ha -1 ). The experiment was laid out in a Splitplot design with three replications. Plant length, no. of leaves plant -1 , no. of branches plant -1 , no. of pods plant -1 , length of pod, 100 seeds weight, pod yield plot , pod yield, seed yield, stover yield, biological yield, harvest index, protein content, oil content, vitamin E content and germination percentage were compared among the individual and combinations effect of treatments. Results indicated that, zinc and foliar application of boron had significant influence on most of the growth, yield and yield contributing characters and seed quality of groundnut. In case of combined effect of zinc and foliar application of boron, the maximum pod yield (2.34 t ha -1 -1 ) and B -1 and Zn 4 ), seed yield (1.78 t ha ), protein content (38.60%), oil content (47.85%), vitamin E content (9.65 mg 100 g seed -1 ) and germination (91.60%) were recorded from Zn 4 B treatment combinations. On the other hand, the minimum pod yield (1.43 t ha -1 4 ), seed yield (0.90 t ha ), protein content (29.35%), oil content (32.64%), vitamin E content (4.75 mg 100 g seed ) and germination (73.90%) were recorded from Zn 1 B treatment combinations. Therefore, it can be concluded from the study that the treatment combinations of Zn 1 (groundnut growing on 7.50 kg zinc sulphate ha -1 with foliar application of boron as boric acid @1.25 g L -1 of water) was found to be most suitable combination for the potential pod yield and seed quality of groundnut

    EFFECT OF SUBSTRATE AMOUNT AND SPAWNING METHOD ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF EAR MUSHROOM

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTUREThe experiment was conducted at the laboratory and culture house of Mushroom Development Institute, Sobhanbang, Savar, Dhaka during the period from March to August 2021 to study the effect of different substrate amount and spawning method on the growth and yield of ear mushroom. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Six different amount of substrates viz., B 1 =250 g, B 2 ii = 500 g, B 3 = 750 g, B 4 = 1250 g, B 6 = 1500 g and Factor B: Three different spawning methods viz., M 1 = Top spawning, M 2 = Thorough spawning and M 3 = Layer spawning. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with four replications. Data on different growth and yield parameters were recorded and significant variation was found in different studied parameters. In case of different substrate amount B 5 treatment gave the maximum number of fruiting body per packet (24.02), weight of individual fruiting body (3.22 g), length of pileus (9.15 cm), thickness of pileus (2.75 mm), diameter of pileus (6.92 cm), biological yield (275.40 g), economic yield (259.47 g), dry yield (61.89 g), biological efficiency (64.13%) and benefit cost ratio (3.37). In case of spawning method, the highest mycelium running rate (0.66 cm), number of fruiting body per packet (24.88), weight of individual fruiting body (3.02 g), length of pileus (9.68 cm), thickness of pileus (2.63 mm), diameter of pileus (5.56 cm), biological yield (262.99 g), economic yield (237.46 g), dry yield (56.71 g), biological efficiency (67.76%) and benefit cost ratio (3.62) was recorded from M 3 treatment. In case of combined effects, highest number of fruiting body per packet (24.83), length of pileus (9.74 cm), thickness of pileus (2.87 mm), diameter of pileus (7.22 cm), weight of individual fruiting body (3.39 g), biological yield (277.81 g), economic yield (263.70 g), dry yield (61.98 g), biological efficiency (78.36%) and benefit cost ratio (4.12) was recorded from B 5 M 3 treatment combination. In this experiment, due to the interaction between B 5 substrate amount with M 3 spawning method showed better performance in growth and yield of ear mushroom

    POPULATION SELECTION IN F 3 AND BACKCROSS GENERATION OF Brassica rapa L.

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGAt the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Dhaka, an experiment was undertaken from November 2021 to February 2022 with 46 populations of Brassica rapa L. (38 F 3 and 8 BC 2 F 2 populations), to estimate genetic variability, correlation, heritability, genetic advance, and direct and indirect effects of different traits for seed yield contributing traits. The analysis of variance exhibited significant variations in all the attributes among all populations. Days to first flowering, number of primary branches per plant, days to 80% maturity, siliqua length, and thousand seed weight exhibited the least difference between genotypic and phenotypic variance, indicating that the environment less influences these traits. The number of secondary branches per plant, the number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, and seed yield per plant however, were found to have high genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation. Days to first flowering, days to 80% maturity, number of secondary branches per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, siliqua length, and thousand seed weight all showed high heritability with low genetic advance which could further be improved by subsequent generation advancing. Number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, and thousand seed weight showed high heritability along with high genetic advance in percentage of mean. In breeding program, heritability accompanied by higher genetic advance as percentage of mean is considered useful in identifying high yielding genotypes. According to a correlation study, at both the phenotypic and genotypic levels, seed yield per plant was positively and significantly associated with days to 80% maturity, plant height, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, and siliqua length. Through path coefficient analysis, it was found that there was a direct positive effect on seed yield per plant in terms of days to 50% flowering, days to 80% maturity, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, siliqua length, and number of seeds per siliqua. Characters like days to 80% maturity, plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, siliqua length, number of seeds per siliqua, and seed yield per plant would be considered while making the selection process. Among 46 populations (38 F 3 and 8 BC 2 F 2 populations), on the basis of short duration 5 F 3 populations such as G4 (81.67 DAS), G16 (81.67 DAS), G26 (80.67 DAS), G27 (82.33 DAS), G28 (80.67 DAS) can be recommended. For high yield 2 F 3 population such as G37 (9.49 g), and G38 (10.08 g), and 3 BC 2 F 2 populations such as G40 (12.31 g), G45 (10.62 g), and G46 (9.39 g) can be recommended for evaluation trial

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF BORO RICE AS AFFECTED BY FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRONOMYThe experiment was conducted in Boro season, 2020-21 to compare the performance of fortified rice variety BRRI dhan84 with non-fortified mega variety BRRI dhan89 and suitable fertilizer combination for maximum growth and yield. Treatments were: two rice variety viz., i) BRRI dhan84 (V ) and ii) BRRI dhan89 (V ) in the main plot and seven different fertilizer management viz., i) no fertilizer (F 2 1 ), ii) recommended NPKS (RFD) with Zn as basal (F ), iii) RFD + Zn as foliar spray at anthesis (F ), iv) RFD + Zn & B as foliar spray at anthesis (F 4 3 ), v) 50% RFD + 50% Cowdung as basal (F ), vi) 50% RFD + 50% Cowdung + Zn & B as basal (F 6 5 ) and vii) 50% RFD + 50% Cowdung as basal + Zn & B as foliar at anthesis (F ) in the sub-plot. The experiment was laid out in a Split-plot design having 3 replications. No significant variations observed between the two varieties for almost all the studied characters except filled grains panicle -1 7 where the variety BRRI dhan89 showed higher number of grains panicles -1 (116.14) than the other variety. RFD with foliar application of zinc and born (F ) gave the highest plant height at harvest (102.54 cm), effective tillers hill 4 -1 (12.83) that similar (13.00) with F (RFD with Zn as basal), panicle length (25.91 cm), 1000-grain weight (23.58 g), grain yield (7.67 t ha -1 ), biological yield (14.85 t ha -1 2 ) and harvest index (51.69%). Irrespective of varieties, F resulted superior response for almost all the studied parameters. Foliar application of zinc and boron at anthesis (F 4 ) along with RFD increased 8.79 and 27.45% yield in BRRI dhan89 compared to that of RFD with Zn as foliar (F 3 ) and RFD with Zn and B basal (F ) application, respectively that was 17.11 and 26.77% for the other fortified rice variety BRRI dhan84. Foliar application of Zn and B along with recommended doses of NPKS can be recommended for Boro rice cultivation

    SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND DETERMINANTS OF THE PARTICIPATION OF THE FARMERS IN SERICULTURE: A STUDY IN RAJSHAHI DISTRICT

Previous research found that socioeconomic status of silkworm cocoon producers has a significant impact on their understanding and acceptance of mulberry and cocoon production strategies. In this context, a study has been conducted in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh to know the socioeconomic status of sericulture farmers. Information for the current inquiry was gathered from 90 farmers in three upazilas through formal discussion and an interview schedule. According to the study, most of the farmers who responded had small families, and relatively few had medium-sized and large families. The majority of farmers had completed elementary and high school, and very few had completed college. Notably, the majority of farmers showed minimal interest in social activities. A significant number of farmers participated in meetings, field trips, farmer training sessions, demonstrations, exhibitions, field days, and educational tours in relation to extension activities. The findings indicate that sericulture farmers in Rajshahi face various challenges, including limited access to credit, inadequate training, and extension services, and low market prices. Furthermore, government policies and programs aimed at improving the socio-economic status of sericulture farmers have been limited in their impact. Based on the findings, this study recommends that sericulture farmers in Rajshahi be provided with better access to credit, training, and extension services. Additionally, policies and programs aimed at improving the market conditions for sericulture products should be prioritized. This research concludes that addressing these challenges can enhance the socioeconomic status of sericulture farmers in Rajshahi and improve the sustainability of the sericulture industry in the region

    EFFECT OF BIOFERTILIZER, FARM-YARD MANURE AND VERMICOMPOST ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF LENTIL

The experiment comprised of single factor eight treatments viz. T = Control, T 1 = Seed inoculation with Rhizobium, T = Seed inoculation with Azospirillum + PSB (Phosphate solubilizing bacteria) + KMB (Potassium mobilizing bacteria), T 2 = RDF (Recommended dose of fertilizer), T = Seed inoculation with Rhizobium + Azospirillum + PSB + KMB, T 5 4 = RDF + Vermicompost, T ii 6 0 = RDF + FYM (Farm-yard manure), T = Seed inoculation with Rhizobium + Azospirillum + PSB + KMB + Vermicompost + FYM. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The results revealed that treatment T (RDF + FYM) exhibited its superiority compared to other organic, inorganic fertilizers, and synthetic biofertilizers in terms of seed yield of lentil. Treatment T 6 6 showed the tallest plant (39.70 cm), the highest number of branches plant -1 (9.30), the highest number of nodules plant (27.39), the highest filled pod plant -1 (69.39), the highest number of dry weight (18.34 g), the highest amount of 1000 seed weight (26.23 g), the highest seed yield (1.95 t ha ) and treatment T 5 (RDF + Vermicompost) gave second highest seed yield (1.91 t ha ), the highest stover yield (3.57 t ha -1 ), the highest biological yield (5.52 t ha -1 3 -1 -1 -1 7 ), and the highest harvest index (38.57) in this experiment. Farm-yard manure with the recommended dose of fertilizer application seemed promising for producing a higher yield of lentil

    POTASSIUM MANAGEMENT FOR IMPROVING GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO UNDER MOISTURE STRESS CONDITION

So, the objectives of this study were to explore the influences of drought on morphology and yield attributes of tomato applying different potassium fertilizer doses. A pot experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The treatments were T 1 ii (Control), T 2 (0.63g K/pot + 40ml water/kg soil), T 3 (0.5g K/pot + 40 ml water/kg soil), T 4 (1g K/pot + 40 ml water/kg soil), T 5 (0.5g K/pot + 70 ml water/kg soil), T 6 (1g K/pot + 70 ml water/kg soil), T 7 (0.5g K/pot + 100 ml water/kg soil) and T 8 (1g K/pot + 100 ml water/kg soil). Drought levels directly reduced the plant growth attributes such as; plant height, leaf area, fresh and dry matter yield, relative water contents, leaf water potential, photosynthesis rate, fruit weight per plant and yield whereas; application of K+ fertilizer progressively alleviated deleterious effects of drought stress on plant growth. T 8 revealed the highest plant height at maturity stage (69.67cm), fruit number (42), fruit diameter (4.67cm), fruit weight (80.17gm) and fruit yield (3.3 Kg per pot). This study informs that an incremental increase yield by increasing levels of K on drought in case of tomato leading to improve the cultivated variety of tomato and fertilizer management

    INFLUENCE OF BIOFERTILIZER WITH ZINC AND BORON ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF BLACK CUMIN (Nigella sativa L.)

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTUREAn experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November 2020 to March 2021 to study the influence of biofertilizer with zinc and boron on the growth and yield of black cumin. Black cumin variety BARI Kalozira-1 was used as planting material in this study. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor-A: biofertilizer (4 levels): T 0 = 0 kg ha -1 (control), T 1 = 4 kg ha II -1 , T 2 = 8 kg ha -1 , T 3 = 12 kg ha -1 ; Factor-B: zinc and boron (4 levels): M 0 = 0 kg ha -1 (control), M 1 = 4 kg Zn ha -1 , M 2 and M 3 = 4 kg Zn + 2 kg B ha -1 . The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (factorial) with three (3) replications. Data on different growth, yield contributing and yield parameter of black cumin were recorded and significant variation was observed from different treatments. In case of biofertilizer the tallest plant (54.19 cm) was observed from T 3 ) treatment. The maximum primary branch plant -1 = 2 kg B ha (12 kg ha (7.25), secondary branch plant (11.38), capsules plant -1 (21.50), seeds capsules -1 (98.15), seed yield plant (5.13 g), seed yield plot -1 (167.90 g), seed yield ha -1 (1119.3 kg), 1000 seed weight (3.18 g) and germination percentage (92.83%) was observed from T 3 ) treatment. In case of zinc and boron the tallest plant (53.76 cm) was observed from M 3 = (Zn 4 kg + B 2 kg ha -1 ) treatment. The maximum primary branch plant (6.97), secondary branch plant -1 (10.90), capsules plant -1 (21.65), seeds capsules (98.29), weight of seed plant -1 (5.14 g), weight of seed plot -1 (12 -1 kg ha -1 -1 (168.69 g), weight of seed ha (1124.60 kg), 1000 seed weight (3.19 g) and germination percentage (93.33%) were observed from M 3 = (Zn 4 kg + B 2kg ha -1 ) treatment. The highest BCR (2.66) was obtained from the T 3 M 3 treatment combination where as the lowest BCR (1.76) was from T 0 M 0 treatment combination. It may be concluded that, sowing of black cumin providing 12 kg biofertilizer with 4 kg Zinc and 2 kg Boron along with RDF was recorded to be more suitable practice for getting higher amount of seed of black cumin

    INFLUENCE OF MICRONUTRIENTS AND THEIR APPLICATION METHODS ON SEED YIELD OF BROCCOLI

The experiment consisted of two factors and followed Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Factor A: Levels of micronutrients (4) viz; F 0 = Zn 0 B 0 Mo 0 kg ha -1 (Control), F 1 = Zn 2 B 1 Mo = Zn 4 B 2 Mo 1.5 kg ha -1 , F 3 = Zn 6 B 3 Mo 2 kg ha -1 and Factor B: Different methods of fertilizer applications (3) viz; M 1 1 kg ha = Direct application (Before transplanting), M = Foliar spray (Before flowering) and M = Direct soil + foliar spray. Experimental result revealed that in case of micronutrients application the highest number of pods per plant (2204.90), seeds per pod (8.31), seed weight per pod (19.25 g), seed yield per plant (34.66 g), seed yield per plot (311.97 g), seed yield per hectare (1155.40 kg) and seed germination percentage (86.64 %) were observed by F 3 3 (Zn ) treatment. In terms of different methods of fertilizer applications, the highest number of pods per plant (2008.2), seeds per pod (7.33), seed weight per pod (17.42 g), seed yield per plant (30.87 g), seed yield per plot (277.79 g) as well as seed yield per hectare (1028 kg) were recorded from M (Foliar spray before flowering). When applied together application of Zn 6 B 3 Mo 2 2 kg ha -1 along with fertilizer application through foliar spray before flowering affected broccoli plant growth and yieldcontributing characteristics, leading to the maximum seed yield per plant (39.17 g), seed yield per plot (352.57 g) and seed yield per hectare (1305.80 kg). Therefore, it is suggested that application of Zn 6 B 3 Mo 2 kg ha -1 along with fertilizer application through foliar spray before flowering (F 3 M 2 ) is beneficial for seed yield production of broccoli

    ROLE OF MICROCREDIT IN RICE AND ONION PRODUCTION: A STUDY IN SELECTED VILLAGES IN GOPALGANJ DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Development and Poverty Studies, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY STUDIESThis study examines the purposes of microcredit use and it‟s role in income generating activities in selected villages of the Gopalganj district in Bangladesh. The research objectives include exploring the socio-demographic status of microcredit users, identifying the purposes of microcredit use, and calculating the role of microcredit in income generation. Primary data was collected within January to June of 2022 from 90 rural households using a structured interview schedule, focusing on the utilization of microcredit in the onion and rice sectors. The findings reveal that microcredit was predominantly used for onion cultivation and rice production, indicating its significant support for agricultural activities. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) analysis demonstrates that onion farming yielded higher profitability compared to rice farming. Therefore, the study concludes that both rice and onion farming sectors are profitable. Farmers using microcredit in onion farming are being the most profitable. Recommendations include encouraging farmers to use microcredit for onion production, lowering the interest rates of microcredit to enhance benefits for borrowers, and improving the financial management skills of microcredit recipients through training and skill development activities. Overall, this study underscores the positive impact of microcredit in enabling income generation and improving livelihoods in the study area
