COMPARATIVE PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS BETWEEN LOCAL AND HIGH YIELDING VARIETY OF POTATO IN MUNSHIGANJ DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSPotato is a vital crop in Bangladesh, with the country being the fourth-largest producer
in Asia. It is contributing significantly to the country's economy and food security. The
sample frame for this research was purposively chosen to include areas with extensive
potato farming. A sample size of 80 farmers who cultivated potato in Munshiganj
district was chosen. This research aimed to investigate the socio-demographic profile
of potato farmers, assess the comparative profitability and resource use efficiency of
hybrid and local varieties of potatoes, and identify the problems faced by farmers during
potato cultivation. The research found that high yielding variety potato cultivation was
more profitable than local variety potato cultivation, with an undiscounted benefit cost
ratio of 1.20 compared to 1.02 for local variety potato cultivation. The study also found
that all the inputs were overutilized. The constrains in potato production and marketing
include high rotting rate during storage, low price of output, high cost of storage
facilities, scarcity of quality seed, problems of middlemen in the market, lack of modern
cultivation knowledge, and unavailability of credit and extension services. The
government has implemented policies such as providing fertilizer and seed subsidies
and creating potato storage facilities to help potato growers
CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIBIOGRAM STUDY OF SOME PATHOGENIC BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM FERMENTED DAIRY PRODUCTS IN DHAKA CITY

DAIRY SCIENCEThis study aimed to investigate the microbiological quality of various fermented dairy
products by isolating different pathogenic bacteria and antibiogram study. A total of 50
samples consisting packaged (n=30) and non-packaged (n=20) were aseptically
collected and subjected to microbiological analysis. The samples were cultured on
selective media to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria based on morphological,
biochemical, microscopic and molecular characteristics and finally antibiogram study
was done for the isolated bacteria. From the study, it was found that the dahi had the
highest titratable acidity, with mean values of 1.003%, while lassi, matha, and burhani
had lower mean values of 0.51%, 0.63%, and 0.65%, respectively. The Total Viable
Count (TVC) of all fermented dairy products ranged from 6 to 8 log CFU/ml, with the
mean Total Coliform Count (TCC) being lowest in packaged dahi and highest in nonpackaged
burhani.
Furthermore, the Total Salmonella-Shigella Count (TSS) and Total
Staphylococcal Count (TSC) is remarkable in non-packaged burhani and non-packaged
dahi. Out of the 50 samples in total, 52% contained Escherichia coli, 10% had
Staphylococcus, and 4% showed the presence of Salmonella species. In the current
research, it was discovered that 52% of the samples contained at least one type of
bacteria from three different genera: Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella.
The overall prevalence rate was lower in packaged products (30%) than non-packaged
(85%) products. Almost all of the isolated bacteria were resistant to amoxicillin,
tetracycline and erythromycin exhibiting less resistance pattern to ciprofloxacin,
gentamicin and neomycin. This study revealed that in spite of having high acidity,
fermented dairy products sold at different markets in Dhaka city were contaminated
with multiple species of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

DAMAGE SEVERITY AND MANAGEMENT OF MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF WATERMELON

number of healthy fruits, infested leaves/plot at the vegetative and reproductive stage,
healthy fruits, infested fruits and percentage of fruit in number and weight basis/plot,
yield contributing characters and yield of watermelon were recorded and statistically
significant variation was recorded for different management practices. At reproductive
stage, lowest (0.33) red pumpkin beetle in the experimental field were found from T

RESPONSE OF SUMMER ONION TO METHYL JASMONATE AND CHITOSAN

Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Plant growth, bulb
development and their quality attributes significantly improved by the application of
methyl jasmonate and 50 µM of methyl jasmonate performed the best for diameter of
bulb (3.18 cm), single bulb weight (15.72 g), yield (10.48 t/ha) and β–carotene (12.02
mg/100g) whereas 75 µM of methyl jasmonate is best for length of bulb (4.01 cm)
and Vitamin-C (17.24 mg/100g) comparatively than other treatments. Chitosan also
increases the vegetative growth, yield and nutritional profile with the application of 4
µM of chitosan performed best for length of bulb (3.98 cm), single bulb weight (16.25
cm), yield (10.83 t/ha), TSS% (9.19) and Vitamin-C (14.83 mg/100g) comparatively
than other treatments. For combined effect, 25 µM of methyl jasmonate with 4 µM of
chitosan produced the highest length of the bulb (4.35 cm), diameter of the bulb (3.49
cm) and single bulb weight (18.33 g) comparatively than other treatment
combinations. Whereas, the amount of β–carotene (14.23 mg/100g) in bulbs enhanced
substantially at 25 µM of methyl jasmonate with 6 µM of chitosan application and the
amount of Vitamin-C (19.60 mg/100g) increased significantly at 75 µM of methyl
jasmonate with 4 µM of chitosan application. Results presume that the highest bulb
yield (12.22 t/ha) was obtained by the application of 25 µM methyl jasmonate with 4
µM of chitosan which would be the best option to maintain better growth, yield and
quality for cultivating onion in summer season
GENETIC VARIABILITY AND CHARACTER ASSOCIATION IN BC1 F9 POPULATION OF Brassica napus L

GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGThirty genotypes of Brassica napus L. were evaluated based on a randomized
complete block design with three replications at the experimental field of Sher-eBangla
Agricultural
University, Dhaka, to study the variability, correlation, and path
analysis during the November 2019 to March 2020 growing seasons. The genotypes
were found significantly variable for all the characters. Comparatively phenotypic
variance was higher than the genotypic variance for all the characters studied. The
high genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation value
were observed for yield per plant (g). The maximum difference between the
phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was 30.31 and 13.82. Days to 50%
flowering, days to maturity, thousand seed weight (g), and yield per plant (g) all
showed high heritability along with genetic advance in percentage of mean, indicating
additive gene expression on this trait. The significant positive correlation with yield
per plant was found in seeds per siliquae, thousand seed weight (g), and yield per
plant in both genotypic and phenotypic levels indicating the importance of these traits
in selection for increasing yield and were identified as yield attributing characters.
Thus, selection can rely upon these characteristics for the genetic improvement of the
yield of B. napus. According to path analysis, the number of secondary branches per
plant had the lowest positive direct effect and thousand seed weight (0.684) had the
highest positive direct effect (0.151). Days to 50% flowering (0.194), plant height
(0.204), number of secondary branches per plant (0.151), siliqua length (0.247), seeds
per siliqua (0.268), and thousand seed weight (0.684) all had a positive direct impact
on yield per plant (g), suggesting that direct selection based on these traits may be
useful in the development of high yielding B. napus varieties. Considering genotypic
variance and agronomic performance genotypes and based on objectives G8, G9,
G18, G1, G28, and G14 might be suggested for future breeding programs
MANAGEMENT OF SALT STRESS IN GROUNDNUT THROUGH UTILIZATION OF BIO-FERTILIZER

150 mM NaCl. Different growth and yield parameters were observed for assessing the
effect of salinity and role of biofertilizer to manage salt stress. Exposure of salinity
decreased growth and yield of groundnut and the level of reduction increased with the
increment of salinity. Application of 50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl decreased seed yield by
57, 83 and 96% respectively. Application of biofertilizer increased growth and yield of
groundnut both in control and saline conditions. Under 50 mM NaCl treatment, the use of
BARI Rhizobium RAh-803, BARI Rhizobium RAh-808, and Mycorrhiza increased seed
yield (134, 401, and 280%, respectively) and stover yield (43, 61, and 65%, respectively)
over the control treatment. Application of biofertilizer also reversed salt induced damages
in groundnut under 100 and 150 mM salinity in same way. Among the biofertilizers,
BARI Rhizobium RA
-808 recovered salt induced damages through increasing growth,
pod number, seed number, 100-seed weight as well as seed yield and stover yield.
Growth and yield of groundnut decreased with increasing salinity levels. However
application of biofertilizer manage salinity, by reducing salt induced damages. Among
them, application of BARI Rhizobium RAh-808 (Salt tolerant) as a biofertilizer might be
a suitable approach to groundnut cultivation under salt stress conditions

SHORT-TERM WATERLOGGING EFFECT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN
Waterlogging stress is one of the most atrocious environmental factors restricting the productivity of
mungbean in tropical and subtropical region. So a pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla
Agricultural University, Dhaka, during April to July 2019 to evaluate the growth and yield attributes of
mungbean under waterlogging condition. The experiment comprised of four mungbean varieties, Green
Diamond, Crystal, Satin and Celera and two treatments control and waterlogging which was laid out in
two factor Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The results showed that both the
varieties and waterlogging treatment had significant influence on growth and yield traits of mungbean
plant. Celera showed the highest (37.04 cm) plant height in both control and waterlogging condition
(31.06 cm). Among the four varieties Crystal created the highest SPAD value (50.07 units) than other
varieties. After waterlogging, new leaves initiated by Green Diamond in 39 DAS followed by Celera.
Number of leaves was higher (11) in Green Diamond in control and it became 4.66 in waterlogging.
Celera produced higher pod per plant both in control and waterlogging. The highest yield per plant
containing variety was Celera both in control (5.30 g) and (4.19 g) in waterlogging. Whereas the lowest
under control in Green Diamond (3.80 g) and under waterlogging in Crystal (1.02 g). The relative yield
indicated that Cerela is the most waterlogging tolerant (0.791), followed by Satin (0.563), Green Diamond
(0.563) and Crystal (0.196)
INFLUENCE OF FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF BORO RICE

March, 2021 to observe the effect of different combination of chemical fertilizers and
organic materials on the performance of rice varieties grown in boro season. The
