ADOPTION OF WHEAT CULTIVATION TECHNOLOGIES BY THE FARMERS IN GANGNI UPAZILA OF MEHERPUR DISTRICT

remarkable progress in increasing wheat cultivation and productivity over the last 30
years but there is a lack of information about farmers’ adoption of wheat cultivation
technologies which may help to increase overall wheat production. Therefore this study
was carried out to describe some selected characteristics of the wheat farmers, to measure
the extent of adoption of wheat cultivation technologies under the studied area, to
estimate the contribution of some selected characteristics of farmers to adoption of wheat
cultivation technologies. The study was conducted in Gangni Upazila of Meherpur
District. Four villages were selected purposively. The number of wheat grower families
of these villages were 2916. Among them, 120 respondents were selected randomly.
From the findings it was revealed that Education, Annual income, Training and
Extension media contact of the farmers had significant positive contribution to the
adoption of wheat cultivation technologies. 19.17% of farmers were belonged to low
adoption category, 55.83% farmers were belonged to medium adoption category, 25%
farmers are belonged to high adoption category. All the sample farmers were more or
less involved in adopting wheat cultivation technologies yet their extent of adoption of
wheat cultivation technologies was not satisfactory. It was concluded that adoption of
wheat cultivation technologies can be increased through increasing education, family
income, training and extension media contact. Therefore, it may be recommended that
necessary steps should be taken by the concern authority to increase the adoption of
wheat cultivation technologies in the study area considering these variables
EFFECT OF DIFFERENT GROWING MEDIA ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF VERTICALLY GROWN THAI BASIL ON ROOFTOP

Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded for different growth
and yield parameters and significant variation was recorded for different treatment.
Plant heights were measured at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 DAT. From the table it is observed
that plant height increased with the advancement of time up to 50 DAT. The highest
plant height at all the growth stages was recorded (17.96, 26.79, 31.26, 35.95 and 40.81
cm) in G
6
(50 % soil + 40 % vermicompost + 10 % cocopeat) followed by G
5
(50 %
soil + 30 % vermicompost + 20 % cocopeat). In contrast, the lowest plant height was
recorded (6.04, 8.27, 10.08, 13.48 and 16.82 cm) in G

(100% soil). Combination of
cocopeat, vermicompost and soil media was most effective for vegetative growth as
well as quantitative yield of Thai basil plants. Considering the yield performance, Thai
basil showed the highest leaf yield per container (0.26 kg) was recorded from G

soil + 40 % vermicompost + 10 % cocopeat) followed by (0.23 kg) from G
5
(50 % soil
+ 30 % vermicompost + 20 % cocopeat)
PRODUCTIVITY AND TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF MAIZE PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF MUNSHIGANJ DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSThe significance of maize production has been steadily increasing in recent years, primarily due
to its wide range of diversified applications. The objective of the present study was to identify the
socio-economic characteristics of maize farmers, to measure the productivity and technical
efficiency of maize production, and address the challenges faced by maize producing farmers in
the study area as well as suggest some policy options to address the problems. To achieve these
objectives, a Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function were employed. Primary data
was collected from 80 randomly selected farmers of the Sirajdikhan and Sreenagar Upazilas in the
Munshiganj district. The results indicated that the coefficients of parameters such as seed cost,
hired labor cost, machinery used cost, and chemical fertilizer cost were positive, with seed and
machinery used costs being highly significant, and the cost of chemical fertilizer cost significant
at the 5 percent level. On the other hand, the coefficients of family labor cost, irrigation cost, and
insecticide cost were negative, with the costs of irrigation and insecticide found to be insignificant.
The technical inefficiency effect model revealed that factors such as age, education, family size,
training, livestock rearing, and membership in social organizations were negative, indicating that
they help in reducing the technical inefficiency of maize farmers. In terms of the challenges faced
by farmers, the high price of quality seeds, natural disasters, and the high cost of labor were
identified as the top three concerns. To address these challenges and enhance maize production, it
is recommended to reduce seed costs, enhance farm mechanization and provide adequate extension
services
GENETIC VARIABILITY STUDIES OF SESAME (Sesamum indicum L.) GENOTYPES

GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGA field experiment was conducted forty-three sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) genotypes at
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period of March 2022 to
August 2022 using Rrandomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications
to study the genetic variability and interrelationship for various traits among the
genotypes. The results revealed that there was a significant variation among the
genotypes for the studied traits. The phenotypic variances were higher than the genotypic
variances. High broad base heritability together with high genetic advance in percent of
mean was observed for number of secondary branches per plant (90.06%), 1000-seed
weight (99.31%) and seed yield per plant (97.89%) while moderate heritability for plant

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF VARIETIES AND SPLIT APPLICATION OF MURIATE OF POTASH ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF ONION

yield of onion. In case of different onion varieties, BARI Piaz-4 (V

highest bulb weight per plant (66.52 g), yield per plot (1.60 kg) and yield per hectare
(17.74 t) of onion. Among different split application of potash fertilizer, the highest
bulb weight per plant (59.97 g), bulb yield per plot (1.44 kg) and onion yield per hectare
(15.99 t) were founded in the M

treatment (⅓ basal application + ⅓ 25 DAT + ⅓ 50
DAT). In the case of combination treatment the V

FIELD EFFICACY OF SOME BIO-RATIONAL BASED MANAGEMENT APPROACHES AGAINST FRUIT FLY ATTACKING SWEET GOURD

infestation of female flowers by fruit fly varied significantly. Considering of healthy
female flowers production per plot, the highest number of healthy female flowers/plot
(14.05) were recorded from T

treatment which was significantly different from all
other treatments. Field efficiency of biorational management of fruit fly on sweet gourd
was significantly different among the treatments. The highest healthy fruit yield (30.85
t/ha) was recorded from treatments T

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF FLORICULTURE ON FARMERS’ LIVELIHOOD: A STUDY IN DHAKA, BANGLADESH

DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY STUDIESBangladesh has seen a substantial increase in flower production over the past few
decades due to increased domestic and global demand. Roses, marigolds, tuberoses,
and gladioli may all be grown in Bangladesh because of the country's mild
temperature and fertile soil. The objectives of this study were to comprehend the
socioeconomic traits of flower farmers, evaluate the effects of floriculture on their
lives using indicators of livelihood outcomes, and pinpoint the challenges farmers
encounter when growing flowers. Using random sampling strategy, primary data were
gathered through interviews with a sample of 100 flower-growing farmers from the
Birulia union in Savar Upazila, Bangladesh.The primary data were collected from 22
November to 20 December,2022. Both Quantative and Qualatative Data Analysis
Methods were used.The results showed that the average size of their small to mediumsized
farms was 1.50 hectares. 4.94 lakh Taka was the typical yearly household
income from floriculture. Using five indicators—food security, ability to battle
vulnerability and poverty, resiliency to natural disasters, adaptability to seasonality
impacts, cost-effectiveness and profitability—the study also assessed the benefits of
floriculture on farmers' livelihoods. The research showed that floriculture boosted
farmers' resilience to natural catastrophes, increased their ability to resist
vulnerabilities and shocks, and contributed to food security. The majority of farmers
were able to overcome seasonal impacts and generated profits even if other
participants experienced difficulties during the lean season. Farmers thought that as a
result of better living circumstances, they were better able to manage risks and
disruptions and maintain their level of life. The study identified a number of
difficulties faced by flower farmers, including viral diseases, high labor costs, severe
water shortages, transportation issues, challenges with flower processing, insufficient
credit support, intermediaries' influence on flower prices, limited familiarity with old
cultivation techniques,insufficient marketing facilities, and a lack of suitable selling
locations. Overall, Bangladesh's flower farming sector has demonstrated tremendous
potential for expansion and social advancement. Flower farmers may further improve
their lives, support rural development, and boost their profitability in both local and
foreign markets by addressing the issues and putting the suggested solutions into
practice
STUDY ON PRESENT STATUS, PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF ROOFTOP GARDENS IN SOME SELECTED AREA OF DHAKA CITY

AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCEThe objectives of this study were to describe the selected characteristics of the
rooftop gardeners; to determine the extent of problem faced by them in rooftop
gardening and to explore the general, environmental prospects and
ecosystem service of the rooftop gardening. The study was conducted with
randomly selected 100 rooftop gardeners in under Dhaka City. A pre-tested
interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents during 20
January to 20 February, 2022. The result showed that about 58% old aged
(above 50 years) involved in rooftop gardening. Average value of production
cost of Vegetables, Fruits Flowers & Other ornamental Plants was 12020 tk.
and market value was estimated 17670 Tk. The benefit cost ratio was 1.47 Tk.
That means Per 1 Tk, Invested the return will be 1.47 Tk. That was increasing
return to scale. According to Problem Faced Index (PFI), The extremely severe
economic problems was high initial cost(Score 2.00 out of 3.00) , physical
problem was lack of availability of quality container(score 2.25), technical
problem was irregular monitoring(score 1.86). The strongly agreed general
prospect was willingness to participate in training (score 2.81), environmental
prospects was environmental temperature mitigation (score 3.00) and cooling
environment (score 3.00), ecosystem service prospect was regulating service
(carbon sequestration, water regulation) score 3.00 out of 3.00
Sensory and Physico-Chemical Quality Evaluation of Traditional, Improved and Commercially Dried Puntius sophore
ABSTRACT
To evaluate the sensory and physical-chemical qualities of traditional, improved, and commercial dried
punti (Puntius sophore), an experiment was conducted. Fresh punti fish was procured and dried for this
purpose utilizing both traditional (TD) and improved methods (ID). Commercially dried (CD) punti fish
was also procured from regional markets. The sensory evaluation of the improved dried products
revealed that they were of higher grade than both commercial- and tradition-style dried punti fish.
According to the findings, enhanced dried punti rehydrated more quickly than traditional and storebought
dry
punti.
The
dried
punti's
moisture
content
ranged
from
14.20.45%
(commercial
dried
punti)
to
22.50.8%
(improved
dried
punti).
When
compared
to
traditional
and
commercial
dried
fish,
improved
dried
fish
had
the
highest
levels
of
crude
protein,
crude
fat,
and
ash.
After
30
days
of
storage,
market
dried
punti
was
found
to
be
infested
with
insects.
However,
it
was
discovered
that
both
traditional
and
improved
dried punti remained pest-free for up to 120 days of storage. The results indicated that the
improved drying techniques produced the best dried fish product in terms of sensory, physico-chemical,
and food safety aspects
EFFECTS OF PLANT EXTRACTS AND CULTURAL PRACTICES ON CUCUMBER MOSAIC VIRUS (CMV) DISEASE MANAGEMENT IN SQUASH (Cucurbita pepo L.)

PLANT PATHOLOGYAn experiment was set up at the field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University from
December, 2020 to March 2021. The present study was aimed to evaluate effectiveness of
several cultural practices viz. inter cropping by coriander, border cropping by wheat, black
polythene mulch, reflective aluminum mulch and plant extracts viz. neem leaf, papaya leaf,
mahogany bark for the management of viral disease of BARI squash 1. The virus in squash
was detected through biological method and DAS-ELISA test. Most of the samples reacted
positively against the antiserum of Cucumber mosaic virus. In response to different selected
treatments against the viral disease, growth and growth contributing characters, yield and yield
attributes of squash were recorded. Significant variations were found among different
treatments against virus disease management in squash. Based on the last observation, it was
found that viral infection varied from 22.22 % to 83.33% and 11.10% to 83.30% in terms of
disease incidence and disease severity, respectively. Maximum prevalence (disease incidence
83.33% and disease severity 83.30%) was found in T

The effect of different treatments on yield and yield contributing characters also showed
significant variations among them, the highest yield (ton/ha) was found in T

(control). It was also found that the percent of disease incidence and severity were positively
correlated with the number of insect vector. On the contrary, the yield (ton/ha) was negatively
correlated with the value of percent disease incidence and severity and insect population in the
field of squash. From the findings of the present study, it may be concluded that reflecting
mulch (aluminum foil) and neem leaf extracts can be used as ecofriendly approaches for the
management of viral disease of squash. However, further investigations are needed to justify
the present findings to get more reliable result
