GROWTH AND YIELD OF MAIZE VARIETIES AS INFLUENCED BY INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT

during the period from October-2021 to February-2022 in Rabi season, to study the
growth and yield of maize varieties as influenced by integrated nutrient management. The
experiment consisted of two factors, and followed split plot design with three

various parameters were evaluated. The analysis of various parameter data revealed
significant differences in maize growth and yield, as a result of variety and different
integrated nutrient management and their combination treatment. In case of different
maize varieties the lowest grain yield (8.72 t ha

) was observed in V

(WIN-142 maize
genotype) treatment. Whereas cultivating Pioneer 3355 maize genotype (V

) gave the
highest cob length (20.86 cm), cob breadth (17.11 cm), number of rows cob

). Among different doses of bio-fertilizers rated nutrient management

DEVELOPMENT OF LOCALLY ENGINEERED LOW-COST RECIRCULATING AQUACULTURE SYSTEM (RAS) IN BANGLADESH
Abstract
The Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) is a healthy method of producing fish in
which fish are continuously grown in the same water at high densities in regulated
environments. The method guarantees every environmental factor that attests to a fishfriendly
atmosphere and a high level of culture system, which would create a new export
market for various local species. Bangladesh hence has a significant demand for
aquaculture mechanization and intensification through RAS. The RAS system must be
affordable, easy to use, and efficient. The usage of regional resources in a certain fish
culture, the surrounding environment, and fish pricing must all be taken into account in
the design. Testing of local species is therefore necessary for the creation of an effective
RAS. One of the most important ways to maximize water reuse and increase fish output
in Bangladesh is to establish and test low-cost RAS utilizing local resources. In addition
to these, using solar power to reduce energy costs would be a wise move. For this reason,
the goal of the current research project is to create a locally manufactured RAS through
the fabrication of crucial components for the intensive cultivation of high-value species
utilizing resources that are readily available and indigenous technology. For the purpose
of cultivating commercial fish species, a project is developed to create, modify, and
validate a locally engineered RAS.
To ascertain the current state of RAS in Bangladesh, a KII was carried out with various
RAS entrepreneurs, importers, equipment makers, and service providers. Among the
various important concerns, some of the more significant ones were improper RAS
design, insufficient technical expertise, a shortage of experienced labour, equipment
selection, water flow rate computation, species selection, excessive operating costs, etc.
In order to lower the RAS's operating costs, an engineering design and technical
specifications were created based on the findings. The water recirculation system was
designed using an underground gravity flow mechanism. The water recirculation system

sloping bottom were designed and built. A total of twelve FRP tanks and twelve triple
tanks with PVC supports, each with a capacity of 3.5 cubic meter, were built. To get rid
of the majority of the solid particles in the water, a low-cost vortex filter was added to the
system. It was noted that the material used in Moveable Bed Reactors (MBBRs)
manufactured locally is effective in removing ammonia from water. An oxygen cone
constructed locally proved successful in raising the inflow water's oxygen content. When
compared to traditional RAS, it was found that locally designed, low-cost RAS is
efficient in raising fish using less energy.

STUDY ON INSECT DIVERSITY AND POLLINATION EFFECT ON THE YIELD OF ELEPHANT APPLE

ENTOMOLOGYA study was conducted to find out the insect diversity their pollination effect and
effect of netting on the yield of elephant apple during the period of June to
November 2021 at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University campus, Dhaka.
Performance of insect pollination on the yield of elephant apple were investigated
and the findings were studied. During observation in total six different species (Apis
cerana, Apis dorsata, Xylocopa sp., Vespa sp., Camponotus copressus and Syrphes
sp.) five different families of insects namely apidae, Vespidae, anthophoridae,
formicidae and syrphidae were found under two orders (Hymenoptera and Diptera)
were found as flower visiting insects of elephant apple. Among the different insect
pollinators, Apis dorsata was the predominant species found to visit the elephant
apple flowers during the entire flowering period. The average population of Apis
dorsata was recorded 5.00 insects per flower which represented 47.62% of
population of total insect pollinators visiting elephant apple flowers. The number of
insect pollinator from Apidae were 2, Vespidae-1, Formicidae-1, Syrphidae-1 and
Anthoporidae-1 respectively. The number of insect abundance of these following
species were, Apidae-33.33%, Vespidae-16.67%, Formicidae16.67%, Syrphidae16.67%
and Anthoporidae-16.67% respectively as flower visitors. The ShannonWiener

elephant apple plant were 464.00 kg and for netting treatment no fruits were
developed and the total yield of elephant apple plant were 92.8 ton per ha. and for
netting treatment no fruits were developed
EFFECT OF GIBBERELLIC ACID ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.) UNDER SALT STRESS

conducted in the field laboratory of the Department of Agroforestry and
Environmental Science, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- 1207, during
the months of October 2021 to April 2022 to observe the performances of
gibberellicacid [G0 (0 mg/L), G1 (50 mg/L), G2 (100 mg/L)] on the growth and yield
of tomato (BARI tomato 16) under salt stress [S0 (0 mM NaCl), S1 (50 mM NaCl)
and S2 (100 mM NaCl), S3 (150 mM NaCl) following completely randomized design
with three replications. Salinity stress hampered growth and productivity of tomato in
dose dependent manner. Salt stress primarily reduced leaf number and chlorophyll
pigments in leaf which consequently decreased the plant height as well as plant
biomass including fruit yield. But application of gibberellic acid could not alter the
saline induced damages. It drastically increased the plant height in both stressed and
non-stressed condition but deformed the fruits and destroy marketable yield
ADOPTION DETERMINANTS OF ORGANIC FERTILIZER USE ON BORO RICE PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF PABNA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

plays a pivotal role in all sphere of life and when it comes to food security of the rural farmers. It
is the most important commodity in terms of livelihood and food. It is not only staple food but
also center of the entire Bengali life. Among various types of rice, Boro rice is grown all over
the Bangladesh for export as well as domestic market. The present study was designed to analyze
the socio-economic profile of the respondent, find out the determinants of organic fertilizer use
on Boro rice production and identify the problems of organic fertilizer use on Boro rice
production. Three villages were selected under Sujanagar Upazila and others two villages from
Bera Upazila. Farmers are mainly using cowdung and compost as the organic fertilizer in the
Boro rice production. Primary data were collected through purposively random sampling from
120 farmers. About 60 farmers use organic fertilizer in Boro rice production, whereas others 60
farmers who did not use organic fertilizer. Descriptive Statistics, Binary Logistic Regression
model used in the study. Majority of the farmers who used organic fertilizer was medium aged
farmers with medium family size, and they had completed their secondary level of schooling
with medium income. In the contrary, who did not use organic fertilizer, had medium family size
with medium income, and they had no formal education. Most of the organic fertilizer user did
not use of credit facility, whereas inorganic fertilizer user use credit facility, although organic
fertilizer user more engaged on various organizational membership than inorganic fertilizer user.
Organic fertilizer user having livestock, but most of the inorganic fertilizer user have no
livestock. The Logistic Regression Model reveals that education, training, extension service,
information access, livestock, market distance, bicycle/van ownership were significant and
positive, on the other hand age, family size, credit facility were significant and negative. Among
various problems of using organic fertilizer on Boro rice production, lack of credit facility
ranked first, high price of inputs ranked second, and lack of training ranked third position in the
study area. This scenery will be changed with adequate use of credit facility, provision of organic
fertilizer to the farmers. Government should give more emphasis on training and raising
awareness on organic fertilizer use on Boro rice production
INFLUENCE OF SEA WEED EXTRACT WITH REDUCED RATES OF CHEMICAL FERTILIZER ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF ONION

Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka 1207. This experiment
mainly focuses on the growth and yield of BARI onion 3 by using organic fertilizer based on
reducing of chemical fertilizer. The experiment consisted of six treatments: NPK (control),
Vermicompost (8t/ha), 90% recommended dose of NPK with 400 ml/ha Sea Weed, 80%
recommended dose of NPK with 600 ml/ha Sea Weed, 70% recommended dose of NPK with
400 ml/ha Sea Weed and 50% recommended dose of NPK with 1000 ml/ha Sea Weed and was
laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with five replications. For this study, data were
calculated on plant height(cm), number of leaves, leaf diameter(cm),leaf length(cm), leaf
length(cm) and also after harvesting data were collected on bulb length(cm), bulb diameter(cm),
fresh weight of bulb per plant(g), dry weight of bulb per plant(g), yield per plot(g) and yield per
ha (t/ha). This study showed the best results for the following parameters were produced by 1000
ml sea weed extract with 50% NPK treatment, the maximum plant height (50.60 cm), maximum
number of leaf 9 per plant, maximum leaf diameter of plant (0.78 cm) and yield (16.64 t/ha). On
the other hand, in treatment 1 the following parameters were very poor compare to others. It is
clearly showed that the better result in various parameters in this experiment was produced by
sea weed extract (1000 ml/ha +50%NPK). So, the study showed that the application of biostimulant,

EVALUATION OF F 2 POPULATIONS OF TOMATO THROUGH ASSESSMENT OF HERITABILITY AND CHARACTER ASSOCIATIONS

GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGThe present study was investigated to find degree of genetic variability, heritability, and genetic
advance of the yield and its contributing attributes among F
2
populations of tomato. The
research study was conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three
replications during the rabi season 2020-2021 at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,
Dhaka. The F
2
populations were characterized for morphological traits e.g. days to first
flowering, days to fruiting, plant height, branches per plant, cluster per plant, fruits per plant,
and yield per plant. Analysis of variance regarding morphological attributes showed highly
significant differences (P≤ 0.01) among tomato F
2
populations. Minimum days to first
flowering and days to first fruiting were recorded for genotype P
3
(23.33 days and 40.33 days),
respectively. Maximum plant height, clusters per plant, fruits per plant, and single fruit weight
were observed for C12, C5, C5, and C4 with values of 118.22 cm, 9.89, 38.89, and 100.47 g.
Little differences were observed between the phenotypic coefficient of variation and genotypic
coefficient of variation for all traits except branches per plant and cluster per plant indicating
that most of the traits were minor influenced by environmental factors for their phenotypic
expression. All traits had high broad heritability (h
2
b), but only branches per plant (42.90) were
found moderate heritability. Low genetic advance as a percent of mean (9.62) was recorded for
days to first fruiting. Moderate genetic advance was found in fruit diameter (15.59) and plant
height (19.21). Low to moderate genetic advance suggests the action of both additive and
nonadditive genes and the favourable influence of environment in the expression of the
mentioned traits. Yield per plant was positively and significantly associated with plant height
(0.417** and 0.317*), branches per plant (0.370** and 0.276*), cluster per plant (0.519** and
0.393**), fruits per plant (0.573** and 0.507**), fruit diameter (0.355** and 0.493**) and
single fruit weight (0.586** and 0.447**) at both genotypic and phenotypic level. High positive
direct effects on total yield per plant were shown by plant height (6.263) followed by single
fruit weight (3.611), number clusters per plant (2.610), fruit length (2.178) and fruits per plant
(0.367). Plant height, single fruit weight, cluster per plant having high positive direct effects
along with positive significant correlation with yield indicating that these traits can be selected
for the improvement of fruit yield. Positive and highly significant heterosis was found in F
2
population for number of fruits per plant in cross C5 (23.68%) and C1 (8.13%) over better
parent and cross C5 (79.48%), C6 (60.51%), C1 (56.92%) and C9 (41.03%) over standard
parent and for fruit yield per plant cross C8 (45.50%), C5 (45.39%), C12 (33.53%) and C6
(30.42%) over better parent and cross C5 (51.82%), C1 (44.92%), C6 (44.17%), C4 (29.37%)
and C3 (29.10%) over the check variety. The crosses C5 (23.68% and 79.48%) for number of
fruits per cluster, C8 (50.72%) and C4 (49.46%) for single fruit weight showed significantly
high percentage of positive heterosis over better and standard parent, respectively. The cross
C1 (-28.91%), C10 (-31.25%), C6 (-20.56%) showed negative heterosis for days to first flowering.
Based on the desired morphological traits and heterosis manifestation of the yield attributing
traits of the F
2
population, the cross combination C1, C5, C6, C8, could be selected for further
improved and advancement of the lines to develop stable inbred lines for future tomato
breeding program
