    EFFECT OF SOME PROMISING CHEMICALS AND BOTANICALS ON THE MANAGEMENT OF APHID AND TOBACCO CUTWORM IN MUSTARD

    A Thesis Submitted to the Institute of Seed Technology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SEED TECHNOLOGYThe experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to study the effect of some promising chemicals and botanicals on the management of aphid and tobacco cutworm in mustardin mustard during the period from October 2021 to February 2022 in the Rabi season. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five different treatment viz: T 1 : Confidor 70WG (imidacloprid) @3g/kg of seed, T 2 : Bioneemplus 1EC (azadirachtin) @1.0 ml/L of water, T 3 : Neem seed kernel extract (azadirachtin) @50 g/L of water, T 4 : Tracer 45 SC (spinosad) @0.4 ml/L of water and T 5 : untreated control, for the management of aphid and tobacco cutworm of mustard with three replications for each treatment. Data on different parameters were recorded and significant variation was observed among different treatment. Experimental result showed that at early, mid and late stage of flowering and fruiting the highest number of aphid and cutworm was observed in T 5 treatment while the lowest number of aphid and cutworm was observed in T 4 treatment. In case of aphid at flowering fruiting stage the maximum number of healthy plant m -2 (28 and 24.67) and higher infestation reduction percentage (76.92 and 72.78 %) was observed in T 4 treatment. In the case of tobacco cutworm at the flowering and fruiting stages, the highest number of healthy plants per square meter (29.33 and 28.00) and the highest infestation reduction percentage (87.64and 76.92 %) was found in the T 4 treatment. In case of growth, yield contributing characters and yield of mustard, among different treatments the maximum plant height (106.35 cm), number branches plant (16.02), siliqua plant -1 (105.10), siliqua length (4.14 cm), seeds siliqua (26.87), 1000seed weight (4.02 g) and higher seed yield (1.77 t ha -1 -1 ) was obtained from T 4 treatment which gave (84.38 %) more yield comparable to control treatment. Based on the investigation of the above results, it may be concluded that among seed treating chemical and few botanicals for controlling mustard aphid and tobacco cutworm, spraying Tracer 45 SC @0.4 ml/L of water at 10-day intervals was the most effective among the management practices for controlling mustard aphid and tobacco cutworm

    ADVERSE EFFECTS OF TRADITIONAL BRICKFIELD ON AGRICULTURE

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMThe purposes of the study were to assess the adverse effect of traditional brickfield on agriculture; to compare item-wise effects of traditional brickfields; to describe some selected characteristics of the farmers and to explore the relationships between each of the selected characteristics of the respondents to their perceived effects of traditional brickfields on agriculture. The study was undertaken purposively in Sadarpur upazila under Faridpur district. Validated and well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 96 farmers during 15 November to 14 December, 2022. The highest proportion (61.5%) of the farmers perceived medium effects as compare to 3.1 percent perceived low effects and 35.4 percent perceived high effects of traditional brickfield on agriculture. On the basis of SEI, it was observed that “reducing top fertile soil” ranked first followed by “reducing crop production area”, “reducing biodiversity”, “reducing crop production”, “reducing local forest and trees area”, and “reducing livestock production”, “reducing fisheries production” and “reducing poultry production” were the least effects of traditional brickfield on agriculture. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation revealed that education, farm size, annual family income and agricultural farming experience of the farmers had positive significant relationship with their perceived adverse effects of traditional brickfield on agriculture. Based on the findings, it is recommended that traditional brickfield should be stopped or transfer to eco-friendly brick manufacturing to reduce the adverse effects of traditional brickfield on agriculture

    ANALYSIS OF DIFENOCONAZOLE, DIMETHOATE, CHLORANTRANILIPROLE, PYMETROZINE RESIDUES ON BRINJAL FRUITS COLLECTED FROM DIFFERENT FIELDS AND MARKETS OF BANGLADESH

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRYThe study was conducted to analyze difenoconazole, dimethoate, chlorantraniliprole, pymetrozine residues on brinjal fruits collected from different fields and markets of Bangladesh during November 2021. The collected samples were analyzed using modified Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) extraction technique and LC-MS/MS for the determination of pesticide residues in 50 field samples and 50 market samples of brinjal. Among the 50 analyzed field samples, pymetrozine was detected in 4 samples (8%), dimethaote was detected in 10 samples (20%), difenoconazole was detected in 6 samples (12%) and chlorantraniliprole was detected in 7 samples (14%). In 50 market samples, pymetrozine was detected in 2 samples (4%), dimethaote was detected in 5 samples (10%), difenoconazole was detected in 4 samples (8%) and chlorantraniliprole was detected in 8 samples (16%). All of the samples detected with pymetrozine, dimethaote, difenoconazole residues has residue above Maximum Residue Level (MRL)

    EFFECTS OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZERS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND NUTRIENTS CONTENT OF CAPSICUM (Capsicum annuum L.)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Chemistry Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of 2 MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRYAn experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-eBangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 to study the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on growth, yield, and nutrients content of capsicum (Capsicum annuum L.) during the period from November 2021 to March 2022. The experiment considered 8 treatments viz. T 0 (control), T 1 (Recommended doses; RD of inorganic fertilizer), T 2 (Vermicompost - 3.5 t ha -1 ), T 3 (Poultry manure - 8 t ha -1 ), T 4 (50% vermicompost + 50% inorganic fertilizer of RD), T 5 (25% vermicompost + 75% inorganic fertilizer of RD), T 6 (50% poultry manure + 50% inorganic fertilizer of RD) and T 7 (25% poultry manure + 75% inorganic fertilizer of RD). The treatment T 5 (25% vermicompost + 75% inorganic fertilizer of RD) exhibited the highest plant height (51.93 cm) but the treatment T 4 (50% vermicompost + 50% inorganic fertilizer of RD) showed the highest number of leaves plant (9.47), flowers plant -1 (11.53), fruits plant -1 -1 (52.07 cm), branches plant (8.71), fruit length (89.93 mm), fruit diameter ( 67.27 mm), individual fruit weight (94.85 g), number of fruits plot -1 (40.67), yield plot (3859.00 g) and yield (19.30 t ha -1 ) whereas control treatment showed least performance. Regarding the nutrient content of capsicum, N content differed significantly and the treatment T 7 (25% poultry manure + 75% inorganic fertilizer of RD) showed the maximum N content (1.73%) whereas T 0 (control) treatment showed the lowest result (0.57%). P and K contents of fruit showed non-significant variation among the treatments. So, it can be concluded that the treatment T 4 (50% vermicompost + 50% inorganic fertilizer of RD) treatment was very much promising for higher capsicum production (ASTHA F1) followed by T 5 (25% vermicompost + 75% inorganic fertilizer of RD). Treatment of 50% vermicompost + 50% inorganic fertilizer of RD (T 4 ) can be recommended at farmers level to achieve higher capsicum production

    BIOCONVERSION OF WATER HYACINTH INTO MATURE COMPOST AND ITS EFFECT ON GROWTH PROMOTION OF CHILI

The successful implementation of this approach can have significant implication for mitigating the adverse effects of invasive aquatic plants, improving soil fertility and fostering a more environmentally friendly approach to waste management and agriculture. Composting of WH with cowdung (CD) was done to produce a nutrient rich organic soil amendment. Composting of WH with CD was done at four combinations (WH:CD, 1:0, 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1). Prepared compost was analyzed for maturity as well as nutrient elements. Experiment was carried out to assess the effect of compost on germination and growth promotion of chili. Optimum electric conductivity (4.46 mS/cm -1 ), bulk density (0.47 g cm ) and germination index (93.34) were observed in T 3 where WH:CD ration was 1:3. Organic carbon, P, K and Na content was higher in WH compost amended with CD. WH in combination with CM (WH:CD, 1:3) may be efficiently used through composting. Application of CD amended with WH compost at 10 t-ha. yielded optimum seedling establishment, plant growth and development

    VALUE CHAIN ANALYSIS OF POTATO IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF PANCHAGARH DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

The objective of this study was to analyze the value chain of potato in some selected areas of Panchagarh district, including the profitability, value addition, marketing cost, and net marketing margin of different actors in the chain. To achieve these objectives, a structured questionnaire was used to interview 25 farmers, 65 middlemen, and 5 cold storage owners from February to April 2023. The data collected were analyzed using profitability analysis, regression analysis, and moving average method. The findings of this study revealed that the sales price of potato varied significantly between different actors in the value chain. The highest sales price per 100kg of potato was received by the retailer at Tk.2225.00, while the lowest sales price was received by the farmer at Tk.1625.55. The value addition by different actors in the chain varied from 9.25% to 25.70%, with the wholesaler having the highest value addition. The marketing cost of the value chain actors varied from 4.51% to 45.90%, with the wholesaler incurring the highest marketing cost. The net marketing margin of different actors in the chain also varied significantly, ranging from 6.65% to 47.45%, with the retailer having the highest net marketing margin. In addition, the seasonal price fluctuation analysis showed that the price of potato was significantly lower during the peak harvesting period, while it was much higher before the planting period. Moreover, the study found that proper credit facilities should be ensured for the value chain actors, as this was mentioned by the highest number of respondents. The study provides valuable insights into the value chain of potato in Panchagarh district, and highlights the need for policies and interventions to improve the profitability and efficiency of the value chain

    FARMERS ’ OPINION ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECT IN HAOR AREA OF BANGLADESH

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMThe study was aimed to examine the Farmers’ opinion about climate change effect in haor area of Bangladesh and estimate the level of contribution of the selected characteristics of the farmers to the effect of climate change on agriculture. The study used quantitative and qualitative methods based on data collection. The locale of the study was conducted in Mohanganj upazila under Netrokona district and data were collected from 80 farmers in March, 2023. Descriptive statistics, multiple regressions, were used for data analysis. In case of study, 50.0 percent of the farmers encountered high effect, 33.75 percent faced medium effect and 16.25 percent of the farmers encountered low effect of climate change in haor area of Bangladesh. Among the variables age, family size, annual family income, educational qualification, access to ICTs, perception on climate change, attitude towards adverse effect climate change and Farmer’s opinion about Climate Change effect in Haor Area of Bangladesh had significant contribution to the effect of climate change on the farmers in haor area of Bangladesh. It is concluded that climate change may play an important role in decreasing the yield of agricultural production and increasing the number of adopted new varieties of agricultural crops by the farmers. It is recommended that the Bangladesh government should take initiative such as ensuring adult education, giving more knowledge to ICTs, adopting resistant varieties for reducing effect of climate change on farmers in haor areas of Bangladesh for a sustainable agricultural developmen

    ADOPTION DETERMINANTS OF INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON TOMATO CULTIVATION IN NARSINGDI DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

    A thesis submitted to the department of Agricultural Economics, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICSIntegrated Pest Management (IPM) practices are one of the most important technologies which are available in Bangladesh agriculture now-a-days. The present study was undertaken mainly to identify the determinants affecting the adoption of IPM practices by the tomato producers. For achieving the objectives, the study was conducted on 120 tomato farmers of Palash upazila (60) and Shibpur upazila (60) of Narsingdi district, of which 60 were considered as IPM users and 60 as IPM non-users. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used to achieve the objectives of the study. Majority of the tomato producers who produced tomato through IPM practices constituted middle aged farmers with middle family size and low farming experience and having small farm size, where most of the tomato producers who did not use IPM had medium farming experience with marginal farm holding and most of them were old aged with medium family size. The determinants that significantly affects adoption decision of IPM were age, education, societal membership, use of hired labor, livestock, training on IPM and distance to local market. Among these variables, training on IPM was the most influencing factor. Therefore, age and distance to local market have negative significance on adoption. Lack of credit, expensive inputs, unavailability of organic fertilizer, inexperienced trainers were some of the constraints faced by the tomato producers for both non-IPM and IPM practices. Government should give more emphasis on training and raising awareness on IPM to influence in using IPM

    INFLUENCE OF BIOCHAR ON YIELD OF WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.) AND SOIL PROPERTIES

The objective was to observe the effect of biochar on the yield of wheat and soil properties and to find out the optimum dose of biochar along with inorganic fertilizer for achieving the maximum yield of wheat. The experiment comprised of 8 treatments as T 1 = Control, T 2 = RFD (Recommended Fertilizer Dose); T 3 = RFD + Biochar @ 1.0 t ha -1 ; T 4 = RFD + Biochar @ 1.5 t ha -1 ; T 5 = RFD + Biochar @ 2.0 t ha = 75% of RFD + Biochar @ 1.0 t ha -1 ; T 7 = 75% of RFD + Biochar @ 1.5 t ha ; T 8 = 75% of RFD + Biochar @ 2.0 t ha -1 . The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The tested variety was BARI Gom-32. Data were recorded on different growth, yield attributes of wheat and nutrient status of postharvest soil. The collected data were statistically analyzed for evaluation of the treatment effect. Results showed that a significant variation among the treatments in respect of majority of the observed parameters. The maximum plant height was recorded from RFD + Biochar @ 2.0 t ha -1 treated plot. The highest number of spike length, number of spikelets spike -1 , number of grains spike -1 was found in T 4 treatment. The maximum yield of wheat (4.21 t ha -1 ) was produced from T 5 (RFD + Biochar @ 2.0 t ha -1 ) treatment which was 12% higher over T 2 (RFD) and 100% higher over T 1 (control). The minimum yield of wheat (2.10 t ha ) was produced from control treatment. From postharvest soil analysis, the highest organic carbon (0.76%), organic matter (1.31%) was recorded in T 8 (75% of RFD + Biochar @ 2.0 t ha -1 ) treatment. From this study, it might be concluded that biochar had significant positive effect on the improvement of growth and yield of wheat when it applied in combination with recommended dose of chemical fertilizers. The fertility of the postharvest soil was also improved apprehensively due to application of biochar along with inorganic fertilizers

    IMPACT OF DIFFERENT ORGANIC LEACHATE AND CLYBIO CONCENTRATIONS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF ORNAMENTAL SUNFLOWER

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTUREA field experiment was accomplished at the horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from October 2021 to December 2021 to evaluate the impact of different organic leachate and clybio concentrations on growth and yield of ornamental sunflowers. Organic leachates, viz. T = Control (No leachate application), V = Vermicompost leachate, N = Neem oil cake leachate, and M = Mustard oil cake leachate, and Clybio concentrations, viz. C 1 = No clybio application (Control), C 2 = Clybio 4 ml/L water and C 3 = Clybio 6 ml/L, were used in this experiment arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth, flower yield and quality attribute parameters were taken, and all the treatments showed significant variations. Maximum stalk diameter (7.1 mm), ray floret area (6.3 cm 2 ), flower head size (15.0 cm), flower head weight (30.4 g), number of secondary flowers per plant in the cut-head (13.3) and the vase life of half-blooming stage (7 days) were found in organic leachates (N), whereas minimum in (T) and among different clybio concentrations, maximum stalk diameter (6.6 mm), ray floret area (6.0 cm 2 ), flower head size (14.3 cm), flower head weight (28.1 g), number of secondary flowers per plant in cut-head (14.3) were found from (C 3 ) whereas minimum in (C 1 ). In terms of combination effects, (NC 3 ) showed the superiority of all parameters, whereas the minimum was found in (TC 1 ). In view of overall performances, the neem oil cake leachate with higher clybio concentrations has the potential for quality sunflower production
