    PRODUCTION STRATEGY AND ITS EFFECT ON SPOTTED DEER AT NATIONAL ZOO IN BANGLADESH

    The production and reproduction profile, feeds and feeding and herd management of spotted deer studied in captive condition at Bangladesh National Zoo in this experiment. For these purposes, fifteen (15) deer’s from each group i.e. adult male (Stag or buck), adult female (Doe), juvenile and infant were used during January 15 to December 15 th 2018 for a period of eleven months. Available feeds that were supplied to the spotted deer such as maize fodder, Jambu grass and Gourd Spinach (Kolmi grass), cabbages, cucumber, gourd, pumpkin, grain, wheat bran and soybean meal. Amount of CP and metabolic energy was 13.63% and 14.38 MJ ME per day respectively. From the study it was observed that average males and females’ birth weights were 2.97 and 2.73 kg, adult males and females weights 78.08 and 60.97 kg, males and females weaning weights were 19.05 and 18.49 kg respectively. It was also observed that average weaning age was 5.19 months, length of estrous was 17. 40 days, age at first fawning was 14.48 months and gestation lengths were 232.69 days respectively. It is concluded that recommended rations need to be fed with proper management systems to keep balanced nutritive conditions along with productive and reproductive well-being of the spotted deer at Bangladesh National Zoo

    INFLUENCE OF PLANT DENSITY AND SOWING DATE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF QUINOA (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRONOMYThe experiment was carried out in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from October 2021 to March 2022 to evaluate the influence of plant density and sowing date on growth and yield of quinoa. The experiment was laid out in a Split-plot design with three replications having three plant density as 25 plants m -2 (P 1 ), 50 plants m -2 (P 2 ) and 75 plants m ii -2 (P 3 ) and six sowing dates as 30 October sowing (D 1 ), 15 November sowing (D 2 ), 30 November sowing (D 3 ),15 December sowing (D 4 ), 30 December sowing (D 5 ) and 15 January sowing (D 6 ). Data on different growth parameters, yield components and yield were recorded. The collected data were statistically analyzed. Number of branches plant (except at harvest), effective branches plant -1 at harvest were significantly affected by P 1 ; ineffective branches plant -1 at harvest, dry weight plant -1 (except at 25 DAS), 1000-seed weight were significantly affected by P 2 and seed yield and biological yield were significantly affected by P 3 and P 2 but plant height (except at 25 DAS), number of leaves plant -1 (except 65 DAS) and harvest index were not significantly affected by plant density. All growth and yield parameters were significantly influenced by sowing date. The sowing date resulted highest plant height (70.71 cm), branches plant -1 (16.93), effective branches plant -1 (14.09) were obtained from D 4 ; leaves plant -1 (82.23) was obtained from D 3 at harvest. At harvest, highest seed yield (3.23 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (5.13 t ha -1 ) were recorded from D 3 and highest straw yield (2.08 t ha -1 ) was recorded from D 4 . Considering interaction effect of plant density and sowing date, all parameters were significantly affected where the interaction of P 3 (75 plants m ) with 30 November sowing (D 3 ) resulted highest seed (3.56 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (5.67 t ha -1 ). Besides, P 2 (50 plants m -2 ) with 30 November sowing (D 3 ) and also P 3 (75 plants m -2 ) with 15 November sowing (D 2 ) ensured higher seed yield (3.27 t ha -1 and 3.20 t ha -1 respectively)

    EFFECT OF HUMIC ACID, PROBIOTICS AND THEIR COMBINATION ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE, IMMUNE RESPONSE AND CARCASS CHARACTERISTICS OF BROILER

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Animal Nutrition, Genetics and Breeding Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN ANIMAL NUTRITIONThe present study was conducted at the National Hatchery Research and development farm Dighulia, Tangail, The Poultry Farm for a period of four weeks using different level of dietary humic acid and probiotics in feed. The specific objectives of this study were under taken to determine the effect of different level of dietary humic acid and probiotics to assess alternative to antibiotics & production performance of broiler. A total of 195 day-old Lohmann meat broiler chicks were allocated randomly to five treatment groups with three replications having 13 broilers per replication. The experiment lasted for 4 weeks and the treatment of various groups consisted of group T 0 (Basal feed), T (Basal feed+0.05% HA), T 2 (Basal feed+0.10%HA), T 3 (Basal feed+0.02% Probiotics) and T (Basal feed+0.05% HA+0.02% Probiotics) respectively. The parameters evaluated in this study were body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, FCR, flock uniformity, survivability, carcass characteristics, caecal microbial count, immune parameter and BCR of broiler. Result demonstrated that the body weight (g) was not significantly different (P>0.05) higher in T 4 (1648.67±91.5) and lower in T 0 (1590.67 ±48.32). The body weight gain (g) was not significantly different (P>0.05), however the higher value was found in T4 (1597.33±96.88) and lower value was in T 0 (1542.33±46.30) group. The higher feed consumption was found in T 4 and lower in T . The overall feed consumption of different treatment groups showed that there was non significant (P>0.05) effects on feed consumption. There was no significant (P>0.05) differences in FCR among treatments T 2 , T 1, T 2 , T 3 and T . However the better feed conversion ratio (FCR) was not significantly (P>0.05) observed in T 4 (1.32±0.00). Dressing percentage significantly (P<0.05) higher in T 4 (69.12 4 ±2.19) and lower in T (59.57±2.96). The weight (g) of thigh, wing and back in T 4 0 were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the other groups. But the weight (g) of drumstick in T was significantly (P<0.05) higher than the other treatment groups. The weight (g) of Liver was significantly higher (P<0.05) and Heart, Spleen and Gizzard in T 3 was not significantly higher (P>0.05) than the other groups. Flock uniformity (%) was higher in treated group T 4 (82.67±67) than others group including control group T . There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in flock uniformity (%). There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in survivability rate (%). BCR is not significantly higher (P>0.05) in 1 0 4 0 4 treatment group T (1.29±0.02) than others groups. No. of E. coli colony (cfu/g) and no. of Salmonella sp. colony (cfu/g) were significantly lower (P<0.05) in treatment group T 4 than other groups. The above research was found that body weight (g), body weight gain (g), dressing percentage, weight (g) of liver, heart, spleen, gizzard, thigh, drumstick, back and survivability rate were better result in T than other groups. FCR and BCR were also found better in T 4 IX 4 (basal feed+0.05%HA+0.02% probiotic) group along with better performance was in humic acid and probiotics treated group. It was concluded that better result was found in T group than others groups. Therefore, the research recommended that broiler rearing with basal feed+0.05%HA+0.02%probiotics along with different level of humic acid and probiotics could be used on broiler production for better performance and profitability

    ROLE OF ORGANIC AMENDMENTS ON MORPHOPHYSIOLOGY OF RICE UNDER ARSENIC STRESS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRONOMYOur study investigated the arsenic induced stress of morpho-physiology in rice plant and the role of organic amendments; cowdung, vermicompost, biochar to mitigate the damages. Rice seedling was grown in 18L pot with 4 arsenic treatment at 21DAT, 32DAT, 42DAT and 52DAT. Sodium Arsenate (0.5Nm, Na 2 HAsO 4 ) considered as As 1 and Sodium (meta) arsenite (0.5Mm, NaAsO 2 ) considered as As 2 and 1.5kg cow-dung, 600g vermi-compost and 500g biochar used as protectant. Plant height, leaf number, leaf area, tiller no. hill , chlorophyll content data are collected from 35DAT to 49 DAT with 7 or 15days interval. Relative water content, shoot and root fresh weight and dry weight data are recorded at 42DAT. The highest plant height was found at control condition at 35DAT, 42DAT and 49DAT. In case of As 1 at all the DAT, vermicompost shows the highest result of plant height and in As 2 condition biochar shows the highest plant height. Also these amendments increased the fresh and dry weight of shoot and root of rice plants. All parameters decreased significantly at 0.5 mM of arsenic stress. For both As 1 and As 2 treated plants combined with vermicompost and biochar shows an increasing percentage at all the yield contributing data parameters compare to As 1 and As 2 treated plant only. Our experiment concludes that rice plant under arsenic stress, vermicompost shows the better percentage of increasing result when plant expost to As 1 (0.5 mM; Sodium arsenate, Na 2 HAsO 4 ) and in case of As 2 (0.5 mM; Sodium meta arsenite, NaAsO 2 ) biochar shows an increasing result compare to all the treatment

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF CUCUMBER VARIETIES AS INFLUENCED BY VARIED MOISTURE LEVELS WITH ORGANIC GROWING MEDIA

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTUREA field study was carried out in January-October 2021 to evaluate the effect of deficit irrigation on physiology, plant growth, and yield of cucumber cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three irrigation levels (I 0 =100% field capacity, I 1 = 80% field capacity and I 2 = 60% field capacity) as main plot factor and three cultivars (V 1 = Mamra, V 2 = Baromashi and V 3 = Maroon) as subplot factor with three replications. Regarding irrigation levels, I 0 (100%) showed the highest plant height and highest number of leaves of 260.12 cm and 165.44 respectively, I 1 (80 %) produced the highest cucumber fruit yield of 2001.98 gm/plant while I 2 (60 %) produced the lowest yield of 951.37 gm/plant. In the matter of combined effect, V 1 resulted in maximum vine length (248.20 cm), number of leaves (124.67), female flower (16), fruit per plant (9), fruit weight (392.17 gm) and yield (3588.03 gm) were recorded from the combination of I 0 and I 1 treatment. V 2 expressed maximum vine length (310.70cm), number of leaves (191.67), fruit per plant (14), fruit weight (178 gm), yield (2483.83 gm) and female flower (18.67) were recorded from the combination of I 0 and I 1 treatment. V 3 expressed maximum vine length (221.47 cm), number of leaves (71.36), female flower (25.67), fruit per plant (20), fruit weight (24.78 gm) and yield (478.80 gm) were recorded from the combination of I 0 and I 1 treatment. These results suggest that 80% irrigation level can be recommended for successful cucumber production without causing a significant decline in fruit yield

    EFFECT OF SOWING DATE AND CHITOSAN RAW MATERIAL POWDER ON BORO RICE (BRRI dhan88)

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Soil Science Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN SOIL SCIENCEA pot experiment was conducted under the net house of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh, during November 2019 to April 2020, to investigate the effect of sowing date and chitosan raw material powder on Boro seedling character. The experiment was consisted of two factors with three replications following Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD). Factor A: Different sowing dates (08) viz: S 1 i = 23 Nov, 2019 S 2 = 25 Nov, 2019 S 3 = 27 Nov, 2019 S 4 = 29 Nov, 2019; S 5 = 01 Dec, 2019; S 6 = 03 Dec, 2019 S 7 = 05 Dec, 2019 and S 8 = 07 Dec, 2019. Factor B: Level of chitosan raw material powder (w/w) (06) viz: T 1 = 0.1%, T 3 = 0.2%, T 4 = 0.3%, T 5 = 0.4% and T 6 = 0.5%. A significant variation was observed in the Boro seedlings characters including seedling height, fresh weight, oven dry weight, seedling strength and chemical properties of the seedbed soils in all the sowing dates. Seedling characters values in all the sowing dates were lowest in the control against the treatments. Seedbed application of the chitosan raw material powder significantly improved the Boro seedling characters at 25 days after sowing (DAS), 30 DAS, and 35 DAS in the different sowing dates. The seedling height, fresh weight, oven dry weight and seedling strength were increased in a dose dependent manner with the application of chitosan raw material powder up to sowing date S 8 . In the 1 st sowing date values of the seedling characters were maximum then gradually decreased and lowest value was found in the last (8 th ) sowing dates. Seedlings produced in the 1 st sowing date at 35 DAS were performed superior than the seedlings of 30 DAS and 25 DAS. But the some treated seedlings of the 25 DAS and 30DAS were performed significantly better than control seedlings of the 35 DAS. Grain yield production of the S 1 seedlings (25, 30 and 35 days old seedlings) was higher in the treated seedlings over the control seedlings. 35 day aged seedling treated with 0.3% chitosan raw materials powder (35DT 3 ) was shown higher yield pot -1 (65.02 g) performance which 21% yield increase over control. On the other hand, a significant improvement was observed on the seedbed soil properties including organic carbon, organic matter, soil pH and total nitrogen content. The maximum value of the seedbed soil properties was recorded in the T 6 treatment and minimum level was recorded in the control treatment (T 1 ). The increments of the organic matter content and total nitrogen content were in a dose dependent manner. The results indicated that chitosan raw material powder could play a significant role in the improvement of Boro seedling characters and yield performance under the optimum sowing dates and also after the optimum sowing dates. Chitosan raw material treated 30-35 days old Boro seedling could be recommended for the farmers use. Low temperature induced seedling growth reduction could be manipulated through using CHT raw material powder in seedbed

    USE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGIES BY THE FARMERS IN FISH FARMING AT TRISHAL UPAZILA

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMFish are a source of cheap protein to many rural communities in Bangladesh. Unfortunately, very few fish farmers are not willing to adopt modern fish farming technologies in order to boost fish production. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of use of selected fish farming modern technologies by fish farmers and to explore the relationship between selected characteristics of the farmers and their use of modern fish farming technologies. The selected characteristics were age, education, family size, fish farm size, annual fish farming income, training received in fish farming, fish farming experience, social mobility, contact with extension media, organizational participation and knowledge of farmer on fish farming. Data were gathered from proportionally and randomly selected 101 respondents (farmers) of Trishal Upazila under Mymensingh district by using a pretested interview schedule and the entire process of collecting data was completed in July to December, 2022. Apart from descriptive statistical methods, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient analysis was used in order to analyse the data. Data revealed that highest portion (46.53 percent) of the fish farmers had medium use of selected fish farming technologies, while 20.79 percent had low use and 32.67 percent had high use of the selected fish farming technologies. So, it can be said that there was scope to increase the use of modern fish farming technologies in the study area. Out of eleven selected characteristics of the fish farmers, education, fish farm size, annual fish farming income, fish farming experience, training received and knowledge on fish farming had positive and significant relationship with their use of modern fish farming technologies. On the other side, age, family size, social mobility, extension media contact and organizational participation had no significant relationship with the farmer's use of modern fish farming technologies. The pond owners faced such major problems as fish diseases, lack of quality feed and other chemicals, transportation problem, high investment etc. Modern fish farming technologies need to be fully embraced to raise both food and nutrition security particularly in rural communities. It is recommended that attempts should be taken by the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and other fisheries advisory service providing organizations to increase the knowledge and practice of the farmers on fish farming by providing necessary trainings and motivations

    SELECTION OF ONION (Allium cepa L.) GENOTYPES FOR DROUGHT TOLERENCE USING MORPHO- PHYSIOLOGICAL AND YIELD CONTRASTING INDICES

    A Thesis Submitted to faculty of Agriculture Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGEight genotypes of Onion (Allium cepa L.) were evaluated to find out the genotypes for drought tolerance using morpho-physiological and yield contrasting indices at Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during July, 2021 to June, 2022. The experiment was laid out in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Mean performance, genetic parameters, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and principal component biplot analysis on different yield contributing characters and yield of onion genotypes were estimated. The longest plant (49.43 cm) was recorded in the genotype Lal Teer King, while the shortest plant (20.287 cm) was found in onion genotype BARI Piaj 3. The highest bulb yield/plant (34.50 g) was recorded in the genotype of Lal Teer King, whereas the lowest bulb yield/plant (21.38 g) from the genotype of BARI Piaj 3. Phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation for all the yield contributing traits indicating drought stress influenced the genotypes. In Pearson’s correlation study, yield per bulb positively and significantly correlated with plant height (0.818), root length (0.511), no. of leaves (0.744), leaf length (0.720), leaf breadth (0.756), bulb length (0.469), bulb diameter (0.716), leaf area (0.893), chlorophyll content (0.886) and dry weight per bulb (0.854). The positive and significant correlation observed between grain yield and traits under-drought stress conditions provided evidence that studied traits might ultimately be considered as a tool for effective selection of drought tolerant genotypes. Path coefficient analysis revealed to that plant height had direct positive effect (5.058), root length had direct positive effect (0.263), no. of leaves had direct positive effect (1.129) and dry weight per bulb had direct positive effect (0.44) on yield per bulb, indicating these were the main contributors to yield per bulb. The study selected 8 genotypes with high grain yields under drought stressed conditions and favorable adaptive traits useful for breeding. In consideration of yield contributing characters and yield Lal Teer King performed better under drought condition followed by BARI Piaj 1, BARI Piaj 2, BARI Piaj 3, Taherpuri, Faridpuri, Bombay and Annex N-53

    SALINITY TOLERANCE IMPROVEMENT OF RED CABBAGE USING POTASSIUM SILICATE AND POTASSIUM NITRATE

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTUREA pot experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from October 2021 to March 2022 to enhance the salinity tolerance of red cabbage (Rubi King) using potassium silicate and potassium nitrate. The treatments consisted of 3 different salinity levels viz., S 0 = Control (± 0.8 dSm -1 ) EC, S 1 = 4 dSm -1 EC and S 2 = 8 dSm -1 EC and application of potassium silicate and potassium nitrate viz., C 0 = Control (Water), C 1 = 3 mM potassium silicate, C 2 = 4 mM potassium nitrate. The experiment was setup in a two factor Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Data on different growth, biochemical parameters and yield contributing characters of red cabbage were recorded. It was found that the head weight of red cabbage gradually decreased by the increase of salinity levels and this reduction rate was decreased by foliar application of potassium nitrate. Significant variation was recorded on yield per plant (g) of red cabbage due to different level of salinity. The maximum yield was recorded from S 0 (807.70 g) whereas the lowest yield (621.80 g) was by resulted from S 2 . The maximum yield (734.90 g) was recorded from C 2 whereas the lowest yield (646.80 g) was by C 0 . The maximum yield (867.00 g) was obtained from S 0 , while the lowest yield (590.80 g) was recorded from treatment combination of S 2 . It can be concluded that, potassium nitrate was more efficient for salinity tolerance improvement of red cabbage. C 2 C

    SEASONAL ABUNDANCE OF CULEX SP. AND ITS CONTROL BY USING BOTANICALS

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF SCIENCE (MS) IN ENTOMOLOGYA laboratory experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University campus to find out the seasonal abundance and to evaluate the efficiency of 5 botanicals for bio rational management of Culex sp. mosquito in Bangladesh. Five botanicals namely Lemon leaf extract, Mint leaf extract, Fenugreek extract, Chilli powder, Mustard oil and control were used against the mosquito larvae of different stages. The experiment was conducted at CRD method with 5 replications. Monthly abundance of Culex sp. was measured from the experimental sites. Form the collection of mosquitoes specimens highest single day collection was from July day 1. The presence of Culex sp. was found throughout the experimental period with a peak population in July and November and lowest in December. The mean developmental duration of different life stages of Culex sp. mosquito was approximately 20 days. The least developmental time was spent in pupal stage (2.25 days). Meanwhile, the longest duration was spent as larvae were 15.33 days. Developmental period from egg to adult was 20 days. Among the treatments lemon leaf extract performed best in case of larval mortality 52.33%. The highest pupal mortality was observed in the treatment of mint leaf extract and similar result observed in case of adult mortality (79.50%) by application of mint leaf extract
