EXTENSION MEDIA CONTACT BY THE URBAN PEOPLE IN RECEIVING GARDENING INFORMATION

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEMThis study aimed to determine the extension media contact of the rooftop/balcony
gardeners for receiving gardening information and explore the relationship of the
selected characteristics of the gardeners with their extension media contact. Data were
collected from 108 rooftop/balcony gardeners of two wards (40 & 41) of Sher-e-Bangla
Nagar Thana under Dhaka North City Corporation during the period from January 10,
2023, to February 10, 2023. Descriptive statistics, including mean, standard deviation,
range, and percentage were used for data analysis. Person’s Product Moment correlation
analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between gardeners' characteristics
and their extension media contact for receiving gardening information. The findings
revealed that the majority 58.4% of the rooftop/balcony gardeners had medium
extension media contact for receiving gardening information, while 29.6% had low, and
12% had high extension media contact for receiving gardening information. According
to descending order of the Standardized Media Contact Index (SMCI), 'YouTube'

followed by 'Facebook', 'Television', 'Internet', 'Nursery Owners',
'Friends/Relatives/ Neighbors', 'Agriculture/Tree Fair', 'Newspaper', 'Leaflet/Booklet/
Magazine', 'Agricultural Extension Agents', 'Agricultural Researchers/Academicians',
and 'Radio.' Correlation results revealed that family size, crop diversification, gardening
experience, time spend in gardening, and knowledge on gardening of the gardeners had
significant positive relationship with their extension media contact for receiving
gardening information. Above half (50.93%) of the gardeners faced medium problems
in rooftop/balcony gardening, compared to 37.96% of gardeners faced low problems in
rooftop/balcony gardening, while 11.11% faced severe problems in rooftop/balcony
gardening. Based on the Standardized Problem Faced Index (SPFI), 'lack of space'
ranked 1st, followed by 'lack of seed/seedling', 'lack of good quality fertile soil', 'high
input cost', 'lack of labor', 'lower yield', 'higher insect attack', 'lack of proper knowledge
of rooftop/balcony gardening', 'higher disease attack', 'higher mortality rate', 'lack of
organic fertilizers', 'lack of pesticides', and 'lack of irrigation facilities'. The study
recommends that relevant organizations such as the Department of Agricultural
Extension (DAE), Horticultural Center, Metropolitan Agriculture Office, and relevant
NGOs should increase their contact with the urban gardeners to increase their extension
media contact for receiving gardening information

DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY STUDIESThis study investigates the impact of handicrafts, specifically the Shatranjee Palli
industry, on rural economic activities and poverty reduction in Bangladesh. Handicrafts
have long been recognized as an important sector in developing countries, contributing
to economic growth, employment generation, and poverty alleviation. Shatranjee Palli,
a traditional form of handicraft, holds significant potential for socioeconomic
development in rural areas of Bangladesh.The study employs a mixed-methods
research approach, combining quantitative data analysis. Quantitative analysis involves
the examination of secondary data from various government sources, including
economic indicators, employment statistics, and poverty measurements. Additionally,
Total of 93 primary data is collected on November-december, 2021 through surveys
and interviews with artisans, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and beneficiaries involved in
the Shatranjee Palli industry. Findings suggest that the Shatranjee Palli industry has a
substantial impact on rural economic activities. It provides employment opportunities
to a large number of individuals, particularly women, who are often marginalized in
the labor market. The industry also serves as a catalyst for income generation and
poverty reduction, empowering artisans and their communities. Moreover, the study
explores the various challenges and constraints faced by the Shatranjee Palli industry,
such as limited access to finance, market barriers, and inadequate infrastructure. It
further identifies potential strategies and policy recommendations to enhance the
industry's contribution to rural economic development and poverty reduction.
This study highlights the significant role of handicrafts, specifically the Shatranjee Palli
industry, in rural economic activities and poverty reduction in Bangladesh. It provides
valuable insights for policymakers, development practitioners, and stakeholders to
foster an enabling environment for the sustained growth and impact of the handicraft
sector in rural areas, leading to improved livelihoods and inclusive economic
development
EFFECT OF BOTANICALS ON SUCKING INSECT PESTS AND THEIR PREDATOR IN BRINJAL

ENTOMOLOGYAn experiment was conducted in the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,
Dhaka, Bangladesh, from March to August 2021 to evaluate the effect of botanicals on sucking
insect pests and their predators in brinjal. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete
Block Design and with three replications. Seven treatments viz. spraying of Neem oil @ 3.0 ml/L
of water at 7 days interval, spraying of Tobacco leaf extract @ 10g/L of water at 7 days interval,
spraying of Garlic extract @ 30g/L of water at 7 days interval, spraying of Papaya leaf extract @
30g/L of water at 7 days interval, spraying of Neem leaf extract @ 20g/L of water at 7 days interval,
spraying of mustard seed extract @ 20g/L of water at 7 days interval, and untreated control were
used to find out their effect. In case of leaf hopper highest reduction over control per plant was
found in neem oil treatment (T
1
) which was 57.73% followed by spraying tobacco leaf extract (T
2
)
50.83%. In case of aphid, plant infestation reduction over control was highest in neem oil treatment
(T
1
) which was 73.62% followed by spraying tobacco leaf extract (T

) 47.39% and spraying neem

) 47.39%. In case of whitefly, reduction of plant infestation was statistically similar
in neem oil application (T

GENETIC VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH CO-EFFICIENT ANALYSIS OF SOME YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING CHARACTERS IN SWEETGOURD (Cucurbita maxima L.)

GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDINGThe present study was laid on randomized complete block design on the
experimental plot of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka- 1207 with
three replications. Ten sweet gourd genotypes were used to estimate the genetic
variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis of yield and yield
contributing character in sweet gourd. Analysis of variance expressed that
genotypic mean sum of square was found highly significant for all the studied
characters. PCV for all the observed characters were found greater than the GCV.
The highest value of PCV and GCV were 44.25% and 34.07%, respectively for
yield per plant. High heritability along with high genetic advance were found for
days to first male flowering, days to first female flowering, pedicle length of
male flower, pedicle length of female flower, number of male flowers, and
individual fruit weight. Through the correlation coefficient analysis, it was
observed that, fruit yield per plant had positive and significant correlation with
days to first male flowering, days to first female flowering, number of male
flowers, number of female flowers, fruit length, number of fruits per plant and
individual fruit weight. Path analysis exhibited that, positive and direct effect on
yield per plant was recorded for days to first male flowering, number of male
flowers, number of female flowers, leaf length, fruit length, number of fruits per
plant, and individual fruit weight. From this observation, it was found that
genotype G8 and genotype G4 were early in nature and genotype G6 was found
to give best performance in number of male flowers, number of female flowers,
number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit yield per plant. So, that,
these genotypes of sweet gourd could be used for future breeding programs
Correlation coefficient and path coefficient analysis in different Brassica rapa genotypes
A field experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University,
Dhaka, Bangladesh to study the correlation between pairs of different characters and the direct and
indirect effect of different characters on seed yield plant

in seven selected genotypes of Brassica rapa L.
to select the plants with higher yield potential. Yield plant

viz. days to 80% maturity was high indirect effect via days to 50% flowering (5.3693) followed by number
of secondary branches plant

ASSESSMENT OF UNDERWATER BIODIVERSITY OF SAINT MARTIN'S ISLAND OF BANGLADESH
Abstract
Occupying less than one percent of the ocean floor, reefs are home to more than
twenty-five percent of marine life. Saint Martin's Island (SMI) is the only island
in Bangladesh where a reef-like ecosystem is found. An underwater survey was
conducted to uncover the underwater biodiversity on this island in the winter
seasons from 2016 to 2019. The photographs of these species were captured by
scuba diving and snorkeling in a water depth of about 3 to 7 meters. The study
revealed 131 faunal and 18 floral species of different taxa viz. Bivalves (5
species), Crabs (5 spp.), Feather star (l sp.), Fireworm (l sp.), Fishes (53 spp.),
Flatworm (l sp.), Hard corals (27 spp.), Hermit crab (1 sp.), Jellyfishes (3 spp.),
Lobster (1 sp.), Octopus (1 sp.), Sea anemones (3 spp.), Sea cucumber (1 sp.), Sea
fans (8 spp.), Sea fern (1 sp.), Sea slug (6 spp.), Sea turtle (1 sp.), Sea snail (1 sp.),
Sea star (l sp.), Sea urchin (1 sp.), Sea whip (1 sp.), Sponges (3 spp.), Tubeworms
(4 spp.), Zoanthid coral (2 spp.), and Seaweed (18 spp.). Coral bleaching was also
observed in this study. The present study exposes the hidden beauties of rich
underwater biodiversity of this island to the people with the hope to take part in
supporting and conserving this island by the tourists, related stakeholders and
government.

EFFICACY OF THREE INSECTICIDES AGAINST MANGO MEALYBUGS MEALYBUGS ( Drosicha mangiferae GREEN)

Agricultural University campus, Dhaka during the period from January 2021 to May,
2021 to study the efficacy of insecticides against mango mealybug. Three insecticides
namely Thiodicarb (Larvin 75WP), Chlorpyriphos (Dursban 20EC), Emamectin
benzoate (Emamectin benzoate 1.9EC) with different doses were tested on different
stages of mango mealybug. In field the experiment was laid out in randomized
complete block design (RCBD) and in laboratory it was set in completely randomized
design (CRD) with four replications. The highest mortality of 1

mango mealybug (88.25% in laboratory and 83.33% in field) was found in T
(Chlorpyriphos 3.0 ml/L) treated insects followed by (88.25% in laboratory and
64.67% in field) in T
(Chlorpyriphos 2.5 ml/L) treated insects after 72 hrs of spray.

Effect of supplementation of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves to lactating cows for improving milk production in traditional farming system
ABSTRACT
The present experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of neem leaves on the performance of early
lactating cows feeding with straw-based traditional diet (rice straw, wheat straw and roadside grass etc.). For
this purpose, six lactating cows were selected based on early lactation and severity of infection in terms of
gastrointestinal nematode. In each cow, neem leaves were supplemented at the rate of 200 mg/kg live weight
of the animal along with the straw-based traditional diet. The selected animals were observed and data were
collected 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after treating with neem leaves. Feces were collected from the cows
weekly for the observation of parasites. From the findings, it was observed that the average egg per gram of
feces (EPG) was significantly (p<0.05) lowered after supplemented with neem leaves. The average body
weight and milk production of the lactating cows were significantly increased after treatment. The results
indicate that supplementation of neem leaves had a positive effect on the performance of lactating cows and
it can be used for better performance of lactating cows under village conditions where cows are reared on
straw-based traditional diet
MANAGEMENT OF MAJOR INSECT PESTS OF SOYBEAN THROUGH SOME IPM PACKAGES

Untreated control, for the management of major insect pests of soybean with three
replications for each treatment. Experimental result showed that in the experimental field,
nineteen insect pests from sixteen families and six orders attacked soybean. The majority
of them belonged to the Orders Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, and Coleoptera. Among the
major pests of soybean, whitefly, jassid, pod borer and leaf roller were more damaging
than other pests on soybean research field. The occurrence of these pests varied
significantly due to the use of various IPM packages. Among the treatments, T
treatment
reduced the incidence of these insect pests on soybean plant at different days after
sowing. The highest number of healthy pods plant

EFFECT OF STICKY TRAPS IN MONITORING INSECTS AND THEIR PERFORMANCE ON BITTER GOURD YIELD

from March to July 2022 with sticky traps to investigate the abundance of insects and
their effect on bitter gourd. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block
design (RCBD) with five replications and consisted of five treatments i.e. T

control. Results showed that nine insect pest species belonging to nine families and five
orders infested the various growth stages of the bitter gourd crop. Of these, five species
namely aphid (Aphis craccivora), thrips (Thrips palmi), red pumpkin beetle
(Aulacophora foveicollis), whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) and melon fruit fly
(Bactrocera cucurbitae) respectively caused 27.30%, 15.41%, 5.92%, 21.84% and
17.88% plant infestation. A total of nine species of insect were found as pollinators
belonging to seven families of four orders. Among the pollinators, bees (Apis cerana, A.
florea and A. dorsata) were most significantly highly abundant (52.43 %) compared to
other species (47.57%). Color sticky traps with high pollinator catches cause a decrease
in pollinator population densities in the experimental field. Of the various color sticky
traps tested, yellow color sticky traps attracted a significantly higher number of
pollinators with a mean population of 15.67. Among the treatments the maximum mean
catchments of aphids (258.66 per trap), whiteflies (32.84 per trap), thrips (103.04 per
trap), melon fruit fly (12.11 per trap) and red pumpkin beetle (6.22 per trap) were
recorded in yellow sticky trap (T
). The use of different sticky traps on bitter gourd
significantly influenced yield contributing characters and yield. Highest number of fruits
per plant (18.20), single fruit weight per plant (106.00 g), minimum fruit infestation by
number (10.99 %) and weight basis (10.98 %) and maximum fruit yield (18.38 t ha
1
)
were found with the treatment yellow color sticky traps. However, considering yield and
attraction of insect, T
(Blue sticky trap) also found effective for management of insect
pest on bitter gourd
