Muslim and Non-Muslim Relations Reflections on Some Qur\u27anic Texts
Humanity lives today in a "Global Village." where no people or nation can live in isolation from and indifferent to what goes on elsewhere. Our world is so interdependent and so interrelated that peaceful dialogue has become an imperative. In spite of the general erosion of commitment to "religion." however interpreted or misinterpreted, religion still plays a pivotal role in shaping people\u27s attitudes and influencing their behavior. In spite of serious instances of abuse of various religions by some of their claimed followers so as to justify or instigate acts of brutality and bloodshed, there are positive and helpful common themes in these religions. Therefore, peaceful and candid inter-faith and inter-faith dialogues are important tools in working for such goals. This paper is a humble contribution to that dialogue from one perspective with in a major world religion that is the professed faith of nearly one- fifth of the human race. One that is more misunderstood than any other faith, sometimes, even, by some of its followers. This paper examines the nature and parameters of the nonnative relationship between muslims and non-Muslims. It is based mainly on and attempt to understand the Qur\u27an in its own textual and historical context. To do this, it is necessary to begin with the methodology and assumptions that underpin the pape
Anti-colonialist Aspiration in the Poetry of Al Mahmud and Seamus Heaney
Anti-colonialist aspiration is evident in the poetry of Al Mahmud and Seamus Heaney. Six poems (three from Al Mahmud and three from Seamus Heaney) have been selected to show how the poets react to the negative effects of colonialism / neocolonialism, how they read the history of the colonial past of their nation, how they read their own national past and reclaim that past
Wholeness and Holiness in Education: An Islamic Perspective
An Islamic Perspective is a very interesting book. Although the book is a result of her experience as a Muslim graduate student in Canada, She does not mention any personal reasons for writing this book. but rather tackles it very lightly without mentioning the hard experiences she faced when her faith was questioned. A Muslim who has taken her faith for granted for years and had little or no communication with the West was questioned for the first time in her life about many aspects of her faith and found herself unable to provide adequate answers. Her book is the result of such an experience, on which many others in her circumstances and situation have faced and will have to face. Although the author frequently tackles abstract ideas, she always provides scholarly explanations and discussions by quoting and elaborating upon many well-known figures in various disciplines
Towards An Islamic Framework of Women Empowerment
As the title suggests, the present article deals with the aspect which has shattered the Muslim community in contemporary world. The paper argues there is a common view among the scholars, media and masses that Islam in general is the main obstacle for women empowerment. They ahey argue that the Quran and the Prophetic traditions (hadiths) discourage women to work in the public arena. Besides, they also argue that among the Muslim community from the Prophetic period to until now women‟s role in households is restricted to indoors activities only. Considering the immense complexities of analyzing the empoerment the author has confined the issue such as whether woment are allowed to work outside provate place or not. The paper takes the position that the Quran, the Prophetic tradition and activities of early Muslim shows that Islam favors empowerment i.e. allows women the work in public places but with certain conditions. In order to justify the argument the author has brought the Quranic verses with interpretation, Prophetic traditions, opinions of the past and present Islamic scholars as well as some examples of Muslim women activities in the public arena during and after Prophetic perio
IBN ASHUR Treatise on Maqasid al-Shari\u27ah
Maqasid al-Shari\u27ah or the higher objectives of Islamic law is considered a very important branch of knowledge in Islamic Shari\u27ah. Next to Usul al-fiqh, which deals with issues pertaining to the sources and methodology of Islamic Law, Maqsid al-Shari\u27ah can be regarded as the greatest development in the history of Islamic jurisprudence. Many scholars of Islamic jurisprudence contributed to this important development, right from Abul Ma`ali al-Juwayni (419/1028-478/1085) in the classical period of Muslim history up to Muhammad al-Tahir Ibn Ashur (1296/1879-1393/1973) in modern times. Realizing the importance of the idea of maqasid, al-Shatibi (d. 790/1388) laboured to reconstruct the whole of usul al-fiqh around the Maqasid and thus made them the unifying theme of the issues and topics usually dealt with almost independently of one another by usul works. With him the Maqasid became the axis of usul al-fiqh
The Role of Religious Education in Curriculum Designing
\u27Religious education\u27 means for many teachers and schools in the United Kingdom the imparting of knowledge about different religions of the world, That is why it is often said by some educationists that even an atheist can be a very good teacher of religious education [1], If, on the other hand, by religious education we mean-what 1 claim that it should mean-the training of the \u27religious sensibility\u27 [2] of students, then only a person who is aware of that sensibility and knows the technique of making others aware of i\ educationally can be a teacher of religious education, It is only when we define \u27religious sensibility\u27 properly that we can understand how it has both a material and a spiritual and ethical dimension, a specific and a universal connotation, and how it is both local and global in perspective, Only then will it be possible for us to assess the central and basic role of religious education in curriculum designing and teaching methodolog
Who Can Reach the Hardcore Poor?
Financial services for the poor are well established in Bangladesh through NGOs, Cooperatives, Public Sectors Programmes and Grmeen Bank. Bangladesh is now teeming with more than 1000 NGOs, who are supported by overseas funds and have taken up microfinance as core activities. These NGOs have made a rapid progress in the coverage of Rural and Urban poor. Although a number of studies showed a positive impact of microfinance NGOs to alleviate poverty, it has experienced and argued by some institutions and research findings that these MFIs- NGOs have not been fully successful to reach the hardcore poor. The objective of the paper is to find out the reasons behind the argument. This paper will present limitations of these microfinance NGOs in the way of reaching hardcore poor and will try to provide an alternative to get rid of this situation

Analyzing Muslim Women’s Leadership : The Contemporary Context
Women’s leadership has become a contentious issue in the contemporary history of some Muslim societies. While it has been allowed by some Islamic scholars according to the necessity of the society in modern context, it has been largely rejected by majority Islamic scholars for its debilitating effects. Instances of women’s leadership in general and as heads of the Muslim states can be found in the context of the success of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan, Khalida Zia and Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh1 , Megawati Sukarnoputri in Indonesia, Atifete Jahjaga in Kosovo, Roza Otunbayeva in Kyrgyzstan, and Mame Madior Boye in Senegal. The contentious issue is debatable because no clear-cut direction was stated regarding the headship of the state and high government position that makes the issue divisive and conflict-ridden. Given the context, there is a need to analyze Muslim’s leadership in contemporary context. The paper examines the concept, brief history, the importance of women’s leadership and analyzes the views of Islamic scholars within the purview of contemporary Islamic thought, which is based on the textual arguments of the Qur’an and Sunnah. The paper concludes that though a tiny fraction of the whole Muslim spectrum tries to justify the permissibility of women’s leadership in developing socio-economic and political perspectives, many Muslim scholars have viewed it as the violation of God’s commands and, therefore, vehemently avert the appointment of women as the head of the state as well as government hig
