Effect of Mix Proportions on Strength and Porosity of Pervious Concrete

    Get PDF
Pervious concrete, also known as permeable concrete, no-fines concrete, or porous asphalt, is a specialized type of concrete characterized by high porosity, allowing water from precipitation and other sources to pass directly through. This reduces surface runoff and supports groundwater recharge, making it a sustainable material choice for low-impact development. Typically composed of coarse aggregates with little to no fine aggregates, the cement paste coats the aggregates, creating interconnected voids that enable water permeability. This study focuses on evaluating the effect of different mix proportions specifically the variations in water-to-cement (w/c) ratios and coarse-to-fine aggregate (CA:FA) ratios on the mechanical properties and porosity of pervious concrete. Mix designs were developed with w/c ratios ranging from 0.40 to 0.50, and coarse aggregates were varied in proportion to study their impact on compressive and flexural strength. The cement used was OPC 43 grade, with specific gravities of cement, coarse aggregate, and fine aggregate being 3.15, 2.68, and 2.65 respectively. Crushed stone and river sand were used as aggregates. The results aim to identify an optimum mix proportion that ensures both adequate strength and desired porosity. Balancing mechanical strength with permeability is a major challenge in pervious concrete, especially for applications in road pavements. This research contributes to developing a structurally viable and environmentally friendly pavement solution through the proper selection and proportioning of materials

    Get PDF
Recently there have been an increasing trend of HIV positive patients surviving longer due to increased availability and compliance with antiretroviral therapy. Some of these patients tend to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as a result of exposure to certain antiretroviral drugs as well as increasing age of the patients. HIV and T2DM could increase the risks of dehydration in these patients. This study was designed to assess the hydration status of patients having HIV and T2DM comorbidities in Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria. In this study 128 participants aged 18 to 59 years were recruited consecutively from December 2023 to May 2024 from designated hospitals in Akwa Ibom state and grouped into normal, diabetic, HIV and diabetic/HIV with each group made up of 32 individuals. Blood samples were taken for on-the-spot blood glucose estimation, glycated haemoglobin, haemoglobin concentration, serum electrolytes, urea and creatinine. Urine was collected for urinalysis. Serum osmolarity and anion gap were calculated. Blood urea nitrogen concentration as well as blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio were also determined. The results showed a significantly higher mean chloride level in the normal and diabetic groups compared to others and a higher bicarbonate level in the diabetic group. Urea and creatinine levels were significantly higher in the diabetic and diabetic+HIV groups when compared with others. Serum calcium was significantly higher in the diabetic and HIV groups compared to others. BUN and BUN/creatinine ratio were significantly higher in the diabetic only group compared to others with serum anion gap, osmolarity, FBS/RBS and HBA1C levels being significantly higher in the diabetic group compared to others. It is concluded that T2DM increased the risk of dehydration which is exacerbated by diabetic/HIV comorbidity

Gear Error Detection Using Image Processing

    Get PDF
A sampling method of gathering representative data from a group. For example, a manufacturer might check only 2 or 3 gears from a batch of 100 gears. Due to which the whole lot gets rejected if any gear in between has error in it. Thus, we need to check each and every gear in the batch but manually this process is time consuming. In our project we are designing and manufacturing a system which will be checking each and every gear. We use a conveyor belt for movement of gear, a camera for capturing and checking the gear parameters for its error by comparing the parameters stored at the back end. If the parameters are matched with the stored parameters, then it goes to the accepted lot otherwise with the help of shooting gun it goes to the rejected lot. Precision measurement of gears plays a vital role in gear measurement and inspection. The current methods of gear measurement are either time consuming or expensive. In addition, no single measurement method is available and capable of accurately measuring all gear parameters while significantly reducing the measurement time

    Get PDF
This study explores the relationship between risk management practices and operational performance among selected rural banks in Laguna during the 2024–2025 academic year. Employing a descriptive-correlational research design, data were collected through self-constructed questionnaires administered to 72 managers across 18 cities and municipalities in Laguna. Statistical analyses, including weighted means and Spearman’s rho correlation, were utilized to interpret the data. Findings indicate that rural banks exhibit a moderate level of risk management, particularly in addressing employee shortages and system downtimes. Operational performance was generally assessed as good, with system downtimes managed slightly more effectively than employee shortages. A strong, positive, and statistically significant correlation was identified between risk management practices and operational performance, suggesting that effective risk management substantially contributes to enhanced operational outcomes in rural banking institutions. In response to these findings, the study proposes an action plan emphasizing cross-training programs, implementation of flexible work schedules, preventive IT maintenance strategies, and the establishment of robust communication protocols to bolster operational resilience and mitigate identified risks. The study recommends that future research extend to other regions and consider additional dimensions of risk management and operational performance within the rural banking sector

    Get PDF
In this study, the financial management practices and financial wellbeing of regular bank employees in Polomolok, South Cotabato were examined to find out whether certain financial management practices impacted their perceived financial wellbeing. The study looked at various financial management indicators, namely cash management, savings management, and maintaining personal budgets. The study was descriptive correlational in nature and collected data from 105 regular bank employees using a structured questionnaire. A Spearman Rank Correlation analysis found a very low positive but not statistically significant correlation (r = .176, p > .05) between financial management practices and financial wellbeing. Although developing good financial habits certainly helps, they are not the only predictors of financial wellbeing. The study concluded that they will always be other variables that likely play a larger role in influencing financial wellbeing than financial management practices; i.e. external macroeconomic conditions (e.g., inflation, employment levels) and unanticipated life events. Although regular bank employees demonstrate generally knowledgeably and disciplined financial management practices, more informed targeted assistance would help develop their personal budgeting. The research made recommendations for bank management to offer some financial wellness programs, academic institutions to enhance their curriculum in financial management, and additional research to identify external variables which may impact financial wellbeing
