Maternal Health Service Delivery and the Impact of Anti-Abortion Law in Nigeria: Case Study Akure Metropolitan City
Background: This case study investigates Nigeria\u27s anti-abortion legislation and attempts to marry them to maternal delivery of healthcare in the municipality of Akure. The study determines the level of awareness of the criminal code anti-abortion law among women and health service workers, the general perception of women and health workers in Akure metropolis about the criminal code anti-abortion law, whether or not the criminal code anti-abortion law has contributed to a reduction in abortions (safe or unsafe) among women, and finally determine whether the penal code\u27s anti-abortion law has influenced maternal health service delivery in Akure. Methodology: The study employs mixed-method research. Nonetheless, the researcher utilized a convergent research strategy, guaranteeing that data processed for both methodologies is collected, processed, and interpreted separately to achieve study objectives. The study employs a convenience sample of 380 respondents, including women in their reproductive years who attend various maternity health facilities and healthcare staff from Akure\u27s four public hospitals. Results: The level of awareness of women and health service workers about the criminal code anti-abortion law (R2 = 0.006, F1,326= 1.81, β = 0.142, p > 0.05) is low. Women and health care workers perceive (R2 = 0.052, F1,326 = 18.032, β perception = 0.101, p < 0.05) the criminal code anti-abortion law as ineffective and forgotten. The criminal code anti-abortion law has significantly helped in achieving reduced abortion amongst women in Akure (r = 0.577, p < 0.05). Finally, the criminal code anti-abortion law has significantly affected maternal health service delivery in the Akure metropolis (R2 = 0.175, F1,326= 69.301, βCCAA = 0.21, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Addressing this complicated issue requires a holistic approach considering the community\u27s socio-cultural fabric whilst promoting the fundamental right to safe and comprehensive maternity care. Policymakers may prepare the path for a future in which maternal well-being is protected and women\u27s rights are fully honoured by creating an ideal atmosphere for reproductive health
Enforcing Positive Discipline in the Classroom: Accounts of Elementary Teachers
This phenomenological inquiry explored the experiences of the teachers in enforcing positive discipline to the learners of Babak District, Division of Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS). It utilized a qualitative employing a phenomenological approach in which the primary data gathering was in-depth interviews of the ten participants. Major findings indicated that about their experiences in enforcing positive discipline in the classroom, they shared three emerging themes namely promoting positive discipline, supporting children\u27 development, and collaborating among stakeholders. Furthermore, after analyzing the answers of the participants about their coping mechanisms adopted with the challenges encountered in enforcing positive discipline in the classroom, the following were the emerging themes namely modifying discipline used, maintaining student discipline and recognizing the role of parents in child discipline. Lastly, the insights of teachers in enforcing positive discipline in the classroom. The responses of the participants yielded three emerging themes namely promoting an increase in academic performance, establishing effective classroom management, and providing professional development. Discipline influenced the learning process by creating a stress-free environment for allocating time to various activities, improving planning by observing and maintaining a set daily routine, shaping learner character and boosting their motivation, facilitating the setting of good examples, and positively contributing to better grades. Although educational institutions had a responsibility to enforce the rules or code of conduct governing learner conduct, parents also played a role in ensuring consistency. Home influenced aspects such as dress code, hairstyles, and fundamental decorum. Finally, the advantages of successful classroom management extended to academic-related results, including a reduction in disruptive behaviors and an increase in academic learning and engagement among students
Understanding the Challenges and Strategies of Elementary Teachers in Teaching Numeracy Skills
This phenomenological study excavated the challenges and strategies of teachers in teaching numeracy particularly in New Corella District, Division of Davao del Norte. This also probed their coping mechanisms from the challenges they encountered, and their insights drawn from the findings of this study. Qualitative – phenomenological study was employed in exploring the views of the ten (10) elementary teachers of which primary instrument of data gathering was through in- depth interview. Major findings revealed that educators face various challenges in this endeavor, and three prominent issues are the low critical thinking skills of students, limited student engagement, and a lack of access to information and communication technology (ICT). Furthermore, three key strategies employed by teachers to enhance problem-solving skills are problem-based learning (PBL), the scaffolding approach, and fostering metacognition and self-regulation. Finally, the landscape of teaching problem-solving skills in mathematics is continually evolving, and educators play a pivotal role in shaping effective instructional practices. Three major themes emerge from the insights of teachers that are crucial to educational management: adaptive pedagogy, technology integration and access, and professional collaboration and learning communities. The exploration of challenges and strategies faced by teachers in teaching numeracy in mathematics for learners holds significant implications for educational research. Understanding the intricacies of this pedagogical landscape provides valuable insights that extend beyond the immediate classroom setting. These research findings have broad implications for teacher professional development, curriculum design, and educational policy formulation. By uncovering the challenges teachers encounter, researchers can inform targeted interventions and support systems to enhance teacher efficacy
Examining How Corporate Branding Communication Strategies Influence Consumer Decisions When Choosing Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) Internet Bundles
Corporate branding communication strategies are the dominant approach employed by firms to design and implement their product promotion activities. Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom and Jamii Telecommunications limited are the only licensed mobile network operators (MNOs) in Kenya, and to dominate the mobile network operators’ market, these companies employ various corporate branding communication strategies to promote their services and attract consumers. The study sought to assess how corporate branding communication strategies influence consumer decisions when choosing Mobile Network Operators MNOs) Internet Bundles. The study was based on media richness theory and used descriptive mixed methods design targeting about 4 million registered subscribers of different mobile network operators in Kenya, living within Nairobi County. Quantitative data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, while qualitative data was gathered through interviews. The study found that most of the customers preferred their mobile network operator of choice because they delivered clear, consistent and competitive messages on the internet bundles, using strategic messaging with diverse medium of communication. These mobile network operators of choice also embraced transparency when communicating their brand of Internet Bundles. All these strategies influenced positively the consumer decisions of using Mobile Network Operators Internet Bundles. The study recommends that MNOs should emphasize unique features of their internet bundles, such as speed, reliability, or exclusive content partnerships, to differentiate themselves from competitors. Moreover, MNOs should ensure that all branding and corporate communications are clear, consistent, and transparent. The study also recommended that the MNOs should develop corporate communication strategies that resonates emotionally with the target audience and that they should also continuously use social media platforms to engage with customers, share updates, and respond to queries and feedback
An Investigation of Food Crop Farming Skills and Knowledge Held by Smallholder Crop Farmers for Sustainable Farming in Teso South Sub-County, Busia County, Kenya
This research study investigated the food crop farming skills and knowledge held by smallholder crop farmers in Teso South Sub-County to promote sustainable farming practices. The study objectives were; to investigate the food crop farming skills and knowledge held by smallholder farmers for sustainable farming in Teso South Sub- County, Busia County – Kenya, to examine the relationship between gender and skills of smallholders’ food crop farmers in Teso South Sub- County, Busia County – Kenya and to determine association between previous trainings and food crop knowledge and skills held by the smallholder crop farmers in Teso South Sub- County, Busia County – Kenya. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. The study revealed that smallholders’ farmers had received trainings that lasted between one hour and three days, some of which had been taken 10 years ago. A Chi-square test for independence (with Yates Continuity Correction) indicated no significant association between gender and previous training status of the smallholders’ farmers, χ2 (4, n = 124) = 4.37, p = .359, phi = .18. Also, a Chi-square test for independence (with Yates Continuity Correction) indicated no significant association between food crop farming skill and knowledge held by smallholders’ farmers and previous training status of the smallholders’ farmers, χ2 (4, n = 124) = 2.03, p = .731, phi = .12. The study recommended that gender should never be used to design training programmes since the proficiency levels of skill and knowledge of both male and female farmers are relatively the same
Production and Quality Evaluation of Spiced Dark Chocolate Bars
The quality of chocolate incorporated with different spices was assessed. Chocolate was produced from cocoa beans and incorporated with different spices (ginger, garlic, turmeric and cinnamon) while plain chocolate sample serves as control using standard processing methods. The chocolate samples was analysed for their proximate composition, vitamin A, vitamin C, phytochemicals, polyphenols, free fatty acid and sensory qualities. The result of the analysis showed that there was significant difference (P<0.05) among the samples in all the parameters evaluated. The results obtained in this research work showed that incorporation of different spices into chocolate samples increased significantly the protein, fibre, ash and dry matter content of the samples while the fat, moisture and carbohydrate contents decreased. The vitamins A and C, epicathechin, cathechin, total polyphenol, total flavonoid and free fatty acid contents of the chocolate samples increased significantly (P<0.05) as a result of incorporation of different spices. In terms of sensory attributes, there was significant difference (P<0.05) among the samples in terms of mouth feel, colour, taste and aroma while there was no difference among the samples (P<0.05) in terms of texture and overall acceptability. In general, all chocolate samples were judged acceptable by the panelist since all have mean score above 5 which is the minimum acceptable score on a 9-point hedonic scale. Chocolate samples incorporated with cinnamon followed by those with ginger had the highest nutrient content and were rated high in terms of sensory quality based on the findings of this study and could therefore be recommended for consumption. Functional chocolate with improved nutritional and sensory attributes could be produced with incorporation of the different spices used in this study for potential health benefits
Coaching and Mentoring in Marilog District: Accounts of Elementary Teachers
This phenomenological inquiry explored the experiences of teachers in coaching and mentoring at Marilog District, Division of Davao City. This also investigated their coping mechanisms from the challenges they encountered, and their insights drawn from the findings of this study. In exploring the experiences of the ten participants, I employed the qualitative – phenomenological study of which primary instrument of data gathering was through in- depth interview. Major findings revealed that on the experiences of teachers in coaching and mentoring namely professional growth and development, building supportive professional relationships, and enhancing student learning and success. Further, on their coping mechanisms from the challenges in coaching and mentoring, the following three themes emerged: resilience and adaptability, effective communication and relationship building, and professional development and self-care. Finally, on the insights of teachers in coaching and mentoring which can be shared to others, the following three themes emerged: impact on instructional practices, personal and professional growth, and collaborative and supportive professional culture. In summary, the implications of coaching and mentoring in education suggest a need for educational institutions to view these practices as integral components of a comprehensive professional development strategy. By recognizing and investing in coaching and mentoring, schools can contribute to the growth and well-being of their educators, ultimately leading to improved teaching practices and enhanced student learning outcomes. Finally, expanding the focus beyond instructional practices to explore the direct impact of coaching and mentoring on student outcomes. Investigating how improved teaching strategies, enhanced teacher well-being, and a positive school culture influenced by mentorship programs contribute to better academic performance and holistic development among students
Promoting Critical and Analytical Thinking Activities among the Learners: Accounts of Elementary Teachers
This phenomenological study explored the experiences of teachers in promoting learners’ critical and analytical thinking of learners in Sto. Tomas West District, Division of Davao del Norte. This also investigated their coping mechanisms from the challenges they encountered, and their insights drawn from the findings of this study. Qualitative – phenomenological study was employed in exploring the views of the ten (10) elementary teachers of which primary instrument of data gathering was through in- depth interview. Major findings indicated that the experiences of teachers in promoting learners\u27 critical and analytical thinking skills encompass a multifaceted exploration of pedagogical approaches, professional development, and assessment methodologies. Furthermore, the next exploration delves into three key coping mechanisms employed by educators to navigate these challenges effectively: technology integration and innovative tools, adaptive instructional strategies, and the cultivation of a growth mindset. Finally, the insights of teachers in promoting critical and analytical thinking skills among learners encompass a rich tapestry of methodologies, strategies, and valuable observations that shape the educational landscape. The three major themes were student engagement and active participation, inquiry-based learning and real-world applications, and assessment for learning and feedback strategies. The research implications stemming from the study on promoting critical and analytical thinking skills among learners are profound and hold significant implications for educational practices and policy considerations. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into effective pedagogical strategies, challenges faced by educators, and successful interventions in cultivating these cognitive abilities
Uncovering the Experiences of High School Teachers in Optimizing Parent-Teacher Partnership in School
This phenomenological study explored the experiences of secondary school teachers in optimizing parent teacher partnership in school in Banaybanay District, Division of Davao Oriental. Furthermore, this investigated their coping strategies and insights that were derived from their experiences drawn from the findings of this study. Qualitative –phenomenological study was employed in exploring the views of the ten (10) participants of which primary instrument of data gathering was through in- depth interview. Findings revealed that after analyzing the responses of the participants about their experiences as high school teachers in optimizing parent-teacher partnership in school, the following three themes emerged: encountering uncooperative parents, dealing with parents with different characteristics, and experiencing problems in terms of communication. Furthermore, on their coping mechanisms adopted, the following were the emergent themes namely extending patience in dealing with parents, appreciating parents’ efforts, and involving parents with different school activities. Finally, the participants shared about their insights drawn from the findings of the study, the following three themes emerged: emphasizing parental participation and involvement, implementing proper methods of communication, and respecting the community’s diverse values and views. Results imply that children are more likely to perform well in school and have better social and emotional development when their parents are active in their education. This is especially true for younger children. Parental participation enhances student performance, self-esteem, and conduct. The establishment of solid ties between parents and the schools their children attend is another benefit of this practice. Likewise, the level of performance of teachers may be improved through parental participation. It is easier for parents to understand the job that teachers do and the obstacles they confront when there is more communication between teachers and parents. This, in turn, helps teachers feel valued
A Critical Review of Information Security and Privacy in Electronic Healthcare Systems: Implications and Future Research for Kenyan Healthcare Systems
Objectives: The paper aims to critically examine existing literature on information security and privacy challenges in Electronic Healthcare Systems (EHCS) at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), Kenya. It evaluates the efficacy of current security protocols and identifies key vulnerabilities, such as unauthorized access and data breaches, in safeguarding patient data. Justification: With the growing prevalence of EHCS and increasing concerns over data security, this review highlights the urgent need to address vulnerabilities in the existing systems. By focusing on under-researched areas like cross-facility data exchange and real-time monitoring, the study underscores the importance of identifying literature gaps to enhance patient data protection in Kenyan healthcare systems. Results: The review identifies critical security threats, such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and insufficient cross-facility data exchange protocols. It also reveals that current frameworks have limitations in addressing these threats and emphasizes the need for improved encryption protocols, better user training, and enhanced collaboration between healthcare facilities and EHCS developers. Conclusion: The findings suggest that there is a pressing need for more robust security measures and collaborative efforts between stakeholders to mitigate security risks in EHCS. This review provides recommendations for healthcare institutions and developers to strengthen electronic health records protection and lays the groundwork for future research to develop a comprehensive information security framework tailored to the challenges in Kenyan and other developing healthcare systems
