Improvement of voxel-based rendering for haptic-oriented virtual dissection

    No full text
Dissection and preparation of a fossil can be a cumbersome task for paleontologists. To assist researcher with these tasks, virtual reality combined with haptic feedback offers new ways to segment and explore. To achieve that, an existing prototype provides the functionality to cut material from a computed tomography scan of a fossil. This thesis improves this prototype by implementing a custom voxel library, increasing the performance, and solving five usability problems. The resulting implementation can render and modify about 2.4 millions visible voxels in real-time at 90 fps or above. This is achieved with Unity DOTS, GPU instancing, parallel computing and a native chunk-based data structure. Furthermore, it also introduces filtering, undoing, restoring, more precision when interacting with the volume using physic colliders, collision with custom meshes and a new way of initialising the cutting process.

Influence of Knitting and Material Parameters on the Quality and Reliability of Knitted Conductor Tracks

    No full text
Many electronic textile (e-textile) applications require a stretchable basis, best achieved through knitted textiles. Ideally, conductive structures can be directly integrated during the knitting process. This study evaluates the influence of several knitting and material parameters on the resistance of knitted conductive tracks after the knitting process and after durability testing. The knitting speed proves to be of little influence, while the type of conductive thread used, as well as the knitting pattern both impact the resistance of the knitted threads and their subsequent reliability considerably. The presented research provides novel insights into the knitting process for conductive yarns and possible applications and shows that choosing suitable material and processing methods can improve the quality and robustness of knitted e-textiles

    No full text

    No full text

Developement of a sustainable bridal fashion colllection with the title “Till death do us part”

    No full text
A new individual collection was created from the worn wedding dresses of past brides. Inspired by the wishes and character traits of the individual models/brides, but also by the details of the previous dresses, custom-made wedding dreams were created. The cultural background of the brides were also main aspects in the collection. It was important that the more negative the history of the old wedding dress was, the more was changed. Sometimes dresses even became completely unrecognisable. All other ingredients of the dresses were purchased sustainably, individual pieces of fabric are exclusively remnants of Berlin bridal studios. Likewise, sustainable digital printing was done on GOTS certified cotton satin with soy-based printing ink. And since the collection is meant to last until death do the garments part with its owner, the individual designs are designed to be worn after the wedding

3D printed rotor blades for a research wind turbine: Aerodynamic and structural design and testing

    No full text
This study combines the design, the 3D printing and the testing of a small 3-bladed wind turbine rotor for research and teaching purposes. The objective is the additive manufacturing of a rotor with a radius of one meter, as an alternative to subtractive methods, such as computerized milling. The blade design is developed using freely available software packages. The aerodynamic considerations include the airfoil selection, the calculation of the blade geometry and the simulation of the ultimate load cases. The structural considerations are focussed on the printable materials, the infill structures and the retrofit of a load-carrying spar. The rotor blades are 3D printed with the BigRep One at the maker space of the TH Wildau. The structural integrity of the prototype blade is tested in terms of the ultimate root bending moments and the centrifugal forces at the HTW Berlin. The aerodynamic run-up tests are performed at the large wind tunnel of the TU Berlin measuring the power curves. The successful prototype paves the way for follow-up projects, such as open field tests and the 3D printing of larger rotor blades

Boar Semen Shipping for Artificial Insemination: Current Status and Analysis of Transport Conditions with a Major Focus on Vibration Emissions

    No full text
In the modern pig reproduction system, artificial insemination (AI) doses are delivered from AI centers to sow farms via logistics vehicles. In this study, six breeding companies in three countries (Brazil, Germany, and the USA) were interviewed about their delivery process. It was found that there is currently no comprehensive monitoring system for the delivery of semen. The entire process “shipping of boar semen” was documented using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN). Although it is not currently known which vibrations occur at all, it is suspected that vibration emissions affect the quality of boar semen. For this reason, a prototype of a measuring system was developed to calculate a displacement index (Di), representing vibration intensities. Vibrations were analyzed in standardized road trials (n = 120) on several road types (A: smooth asphalt pavement, B: rough asphalt pavement, C: cobblestone, and D: dirt road) with different speeds (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 km/h). A two-way ANOVA showed significant differences in mean Di, depending on road surface and speed as well as an interaction of both factors (p < 0.001). A field study on a reference delivery from a German AI center to several sow farms indicated that 33% of the observed roads are in good quality and generate only a few vibrations (Di ≤ 1), while 40% are of a moderate quality with interrupted surfaces (Di = 1–1.5). However, 25% of the roads show markedly increased vibrations (Di ≥ 1.5), as a consequence of bad conditions on cobblestones or unpaved roads. Overall, more attention should be paid to factors affecting sperm quality during transport. In the future, an Internet of Things (IoT) based solution could enable complete monitoring of the entire transport process in real time, which could influence the courier’s driving behavior based on road conditions in order to maintain the quality of the transported AI doses
