Voices: An Inclusive Choir in Dortmund, Germany
The article describes the concept and work with an inclusive choir, in which students of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences at TU Dortmund University sing together with adult mentally challenged people. The choir ‘Voices’ was founded in 2010, as a part of the project Dortmunder Modell: Musik (DOMO: Musik). The choir and project are committed to realising the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, particularly in developing models of cultural participation, relevant both for people with and without disabilities. After describing the DOMO: Musik project and its principles, newly developed ideas for inclusive choir work are presented, together with imminent difficulties and positive results. Special attention is drawn to the selection of the pieces under the aspect of artistic variety. Five pieces of the artistic interdisciplinary repertoire are presented. Finally, the student choir members reflect on their experiences in the inclusive choir and make clear the importance of joint activities leading to an inclusive society
Reporting on Outcomes: An Adaptation of the ‘AQR-instrument’ Used to Evaluate Music Therapy in Autism
Το άρθρο αυτό παρουσιάζει µια προσαρµογή του εργαλείου AQR (Assessment of the Quality of Relationship - Αξιολόγηση της Ποιότητας της Σχέσης) (Schumacher & Calvet 2007), το οποίο επικεντρώνεται στη µουσικοθεραπεία και στον αυτισµό. This article introduces an adaptation of the music therapy and autism specific AQR-instrument (Assessment of the Quality of Relationship) (Schumacher & Calvet 2007). The author developed this adaptation following the requirement to report on the outcomes of his work at a school for children with autism.
After introducing the AQR-instrument, the author describes how his adaptation enables him to produce bar charts illustrating client progress. This is done by drawing on the procedures of the Developmental Disabilities – Children’s Global Assessment Scale (Wagner et al. 2007). A case example illustrates the format used for the therapy plans, termly reports and annual review reports in which the bar charts are incorporated
Orchestral Conducting as Educational Practice: A Smallian Perspective of Relationships and Pedagogy in Youth Orchestras
In this article the author attempts a first description of his ongoing research on the pedagogy and educational philosophy which can be applied in working with the youth orchestra, based on Christopher Small’s theory of musicking; the youth orchestra is seen here as a learning community, and the author attempts to redefine the relationships which are embodied and shaped within it, wishing to stir up the stagnant social relationships of the classical orchestra community. The article is particularly concerned with the power relationship between the teacher-conductor and the students, while raising questions of musical identity, hierarchy and empathy from a Smallian perspective applied to the conducting of the youth orchestra, within a concept of educational conducting
Musicking: Music Praxis as Health and Therapy through an Interdisciplinary Perspective
Christopher Small introduced the term ‘musicking’ in 1998 emphasising that music is something that people do to understand their way of being and to relate to anyone and anything surrounding them. Based on the recent translation of Small\u27s ‘Musicking’ book (2010) in Greek, this article aims to be conducive to understanding the terms ‘mousikotropo’ and ‘mousikotropia’ (the Greek translations of musicking). Through an interdisciplinary perspective, it attempts to embody these terms in the Greek language and relevant literature, in a practical and legitimate way. In this direction, the article briefly sketches out the theoretical context that gave birth to the concept of musicking, calling upon Gregory Bateson\u27s ideas. Having defined this context, a case study from the field of new musicology is presented, that deals with the role of musicking in the construction of identities. Moving on from the field of new musicology to the broader field of healthcare, the article focuses on the dialectic relationship between music and health. In this framework, the role of musicking as therapy emerges, with an emphasis on Nordoff and Robbins\u27 music-centred music therapy and its main principles. Through a second case study, this time from the field of palliative and bereavement care, different aspects of musicking’s practical application in music therapy emerge
