As the ageing population continues to grow there  is an increase in the need for wellness-based music therapy programmes and interventions. Programmatic outcomes such as fostering opportunities for older adults to: 1) learn a new skill, 2) make decisions, 3) structure time through development of musical skills, and 4) socially interact with others should be addressed when developing wellness-based music therapy programmes. This paper shares a music therapist’s development of a wellness-based programme that addresses the above programmatic outcomes while enhancing older adults’ cognitive, psychosocial, and physical functioning

This case study sought to discover the effects of structured music activity sessions on eye contact and communication skills of Hunter; a six year old, high functioning child with autism. The research design consisted of two baseline observations in music class, six biweekly home activity sessions concurrent with three weekly music class observations, and two final music class observations. Activity sessions lasted approximately thirty minutes, and consisted of seven different activities, which were designed to increase joint attention through verbal, emotional, and social communication skills, as well as eye contact. Sessions were video recorded, and data analysis showed that Hunter’s eye contact increased from 76% in the first session to a high of 91% by the fifth activity session. Eye contact during the dedicated discussion activities increased from 21% in the first session to 46% by the sixth session. Observations and parent/teacher questionnaires revealed that he demonstrated higher levels of social functioning and both emotional and musical expression (including improvisation) following activity sessions. Hunter transferred verbal communication, facial gestures and social cues from his sessions to music classes. In his concert following the fifth session, Hunter made contextually appropriate verbal improvisations and improved singing and movement synchronisation with the music

This article highlights results from a research study of ‘Music Week’; a one-week Swedish music project performed at a Swedish folk high school, a Nordic-style residential adult education college. The aim of the Music Week project was to enable young people with physical impairments to take part in musical activities. Digitally-based musical settings were used in order to provide tools for both performing and creating music. The Music Week project was part of a larger 3-year music project. The main purpose of the present research study was both to explore the interaction and the music education practices applied during the Music Week project as well as to explore the musical settings used within the project. The research method was partially inspired by ethnographical methods. In the study, two main variations of teaching music in groups were identified: i) Performance-oriented, with a clear goal of performing songs for an audience and ii) Participatory-oriented, where the participants were able to explore their potential to play and create music. Furthermore, the results suggest that musical settings should be regarded in a holistic way to include all kinds of resources: musical, technical, physical, psychological and personal

A Carl Orff Music and Movement Education Programme for Hearing-Impaired Students

    No full text
A Carl Orff (Orff-Schulwerk) music and movement education programme for hearing impaired students (i.e., deaf and hard-of-hearing students) is presented in this study. This programme is based on the idea that hearing loss should not exclude the developing individual from opportunities for engaging with music. The usefulness and originality of the programme lies on the fact that it is one of the first attempts in Greece for music and movement education – as part of the school timetable – of deaf and hard of hearing students. Until recently, music education of hearing impaired persons was treated with caution and prejudices with regards to its necessity and effectiveness. In this article the theoretical principles underpinning the programme, the programme objectives and means, as well as its assessment procedures are discussed. The contribution of the Orff pedagogical approach in this programme is emphasised, as the programme’s key pillars are consistent with the theoretical principles of the Orff philosophy, while the means, the pedagogical techniques and the orchestra instruments of this pedagogical approach were adopted in the implementation of the programme
