It may be said that music therapy training in the UK has come to maturity since most of the current Master’s programmes now have a history of more than a decade. The recently founded music therapy training programme in South Wales seems to have benefited from the existing experience of earlier courses in the UK but has had to take into consideration the unique features of the area in which it serves. In this interview Elizabeth Coombes, the Course Leader of the MA Music Therapy at the University of South Wales, shares with the readership of Approaches facts, ideas and ethical considerations regarding the planning and implementation of this new programme. The discussion between Elizabeth Coombes and the interviewer Ioanna Etmektsoglou touches on themes such as the adaptation to the unique local features of the area, the applicants’ necessary skills and the interview approach, the development of musical skills during the course, the nature and length of the music experiential group and personal psychotherapy as well as the counselling services provided by the university. Clinical placements and work possibilities for UK and international graduates are also discussed. The interviewer concludes with some thoughts regarding the relevance of the interview to music therapists in Greece

Supervisor training: An integration of professional supervision and the use of artistic media

    Get PDF
This article fills a gap in knowledge about supervisor training programmes in the field of music therapy in Europe. Sparse research exists which demonstrates evidence of effective professional supervision upon the outcome of music therapy clinical practice. The article has its focus on the experience of an integrated supervisor training programme offered in Aalborg, Denmark in 2009/2010. In this programme general issues of professional supervision and the application of artistic media as a core element in the supervisory process were integrated. It is the hope of the author that this article will inspire other music therapists to develop supervisor training programmes for professional music therapists and also to undertake further research into professional supervision

The role of professional associations in the recognition process

The goal of this paper is to show the importance of the professional association in the process of legal recognition of the music therapy profession by taking into consideration three kinds of legitimacy: pragmatic, moral and cognitive legitimacy. The paper represents a prospective comparative analysis of the structure of professional music therapy associations, as well as the inner and outer circumstances that affect the process of legal recognition and regulation of music therapy as an independent profession. The material for reflection and analysis is represented by two questionnaires; the first one was filled out in 2009 by 26 representatives from each of the 26 member countries, and the second one in 2014 by 25 representatives from a total of 27 member countries of the European Music Therapy Confederation (EMTC). In addition, the report of the treasurer on the number of members for the mentioned years is included in the analysis. This is the first research of this kind under the EMTC and I have conducted it in order to contribute to the work of the board, the general assembly of EMTC and the European Music Therapy Register (EMTR) commission, with the hopes that it can be of value to music therapists in Europe
