Comparative Analysis of Temperature Effects on the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) Subspecies

This study investigates the influence of temperature on stereotypic behaviors in two subspecies of American Black bears (Ursus americanus), the Louisiana black Bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) and the Kenai black bear (Ursus americanus perniger), housed at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Louisiana. Using focal animal sampling, I observed the bears\u27 behaviors over several sessions, recording temperature data before each observation. Results indicate a significant positive relationship between temperature and stereotypic behaviors in the Kenai black bear, suggesting that this subspecies, acclimatized to cooler climates, exhibits stress responses when exposed to warmer environments. In contrast, the Louisiana Black Bear showed no significant changes in stereotypic behavior with temperature fluctuations, reflecting its adaptation to the warmer, subtropical conditions of the southern U.S. The interaction between temperature and location was also significant, highlighting the compounded effects of environmental stressors and subspecies-specific adaptations. These findings underscore the importance of phenotypic plasticity in shaping how these bears respond to temperature, with the Louisiana black bear demonstrating greater resilience. The study also discusses broader implications for the conservation of cold-adapted species in the context of climate change, suggesting that species like the Kenai black bear may face heightened vulnerability due to warming global temperatures. Overall, this research emphasizes the need for tailored management practices in zoos and conservation efforts to mitigate the effects of environmental stress on both captive and wild bear populations

Rivers, Rights, and Religion: Securing Legal Personhood for the Ganges River in India

Every day, as the sun rises in the Himalayas, the water from the melting glaciers flows into what becomes the Ganges River. Yet, what starts as pristine glacial water becomes polluted with toxic chemicals, sewage, and human remains by the time it flows through India and Bangladesh and empties into the Bay of Bengal.      Beyond being a crucial natural resource serving a third of India’s population, the Ganges River is also a religious landmark to the approximately 900 million Hindus around the world, many of whom make the pilgrimage to scatter their loved ones’ ashes in the holy waters. The banks of the river are also home to many businesses and irrigation channels used for crucial agricultural needs. Consequently, the water that is home to endangered species and used for drinking is becoming increasingly polluted. While there are laws that regulate some activity along the river, the river as a whole must be protected and authorized to defend itself against these multiple sources of contamination. Granting the river legal personhood is a step in the right direction

Bridging the Legal Void: State-Sponsored Cyber Operations and International Law in the Digital Age

As technology interconnects the world more deeply, cyber warfare becomes an increasingly urgent threat. In 2010, a state-sponsored super virus, unprecedented in its sophistication, crippled Iran’s nuclear program by destroying nuclear centrifuges. In 2015, a cyberattack compromised the entire Ukrainian power grid, causing widespread outages that affected about 230,000 customers and lasted up to sixty-five hours. By 2023, Chinese hackers had infiltrated the email systems of over two dozen U.S. federal agencies, including a breach of the U.S. Secretary of Commerce’s email. This year, a monumental cyberattack on Change Healthcare, a critical system managing electronic prescriptions and payments, threw the U.S. healthcare infrastructure into chaos. These incidents highlight the pressing need for a robust international legal framework to address the unique challenges posed by cyber warfare, while the global nature of these threats demands unprecedented international cooperation to craft effective legal responses
