Guardian of Safety: Dr. Frances Kelsey’s Stand Against Thalidomide

This case study explores the thalidomide tragedy of the late 1950s and early 1960s in the United States, which had far-reaching consequences for public health and perinatal care. The case examines the role of Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey, a feminist leader and newly appointed medical officer at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in the tragedy and her unwavering commitment as a public health officer. Kelsey’s entrance into this government agency led her to an immediate and dramatic crossroads: would she approve a promising treatment based on foreign safety data alone, or demand more evidence despite delaying potential relief? Through historical and public health-based research, including first-hand testimony, this case explores the importance of feminist leadership, diligence, and trust in scientific judgment when establishing and safeguarding effective public health practices

Girls for the Gospel: Appealing to Remain Southern Baptist in a Convention that Opposes Female Pastorship

Reverend Linda Barnes Popham was finishing her third decade as senior pastor of Fern Creek Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky when the Credentials and Executive Committees of the Southern Baptist Convention removed her church from the organization in 2023. The Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in North America, had grappled with women’s roles in leadership for decades, though 2023 was the first year it began enforcing the exclusion of churches with female pastors. Its decision to remove churches with female pastors occurred in a climate rife with unaddressed racism and sexual abuse charges, as well as increased tension over the church and state’s stances on LGBTQ+ matters. As a pastor “more Southern Baptist than most,” Popham had to decide whether she would appeal the committee’s decisions on her church’s behalf at the organization’s annual meeting. Could she appeal to remain in an organization whose goals aligned with her own but did not recognize her as a worthy partner because of her very identity

Presumption of Finality: Letty Di Giulio’s Capital Decision

Capital defense attorneys are part of a specific subset of the criminal justice system which solely focuses on representing defendants who are facing the death penalty. For Letty S. Di Giulio, becoming an attorney seemed like her natural path given her father’s legal legacy as a prominent criminal defense attorney in Louisiana.  However, when she was faced with a significant loss the summer before her last year of law school, she had to come to terms with the psychological toll capital defense attorneys face when a client is executed. . She was at a crossroads: Di Giulio had to choose whether to adhere to a career devoted to defending capital defendants at the mercy of the state or to reevaluate the vocation she had imagined for herself her whole life

Philosophical Souls: Socratic Midwifery and Philosophical Curiosity in Plato’s Theaetetus

This paper gives a reading of the midwife image in Plato’s Theaetetus, analyzing the coherence of each part of midwifery presented by Socrates (pimping, giving birth, and the evaluation of offspring). The midwife image is introduced by Socrates to arrive at a definition of knowledge that could encompass both the Socratic method and mathematics. He introduces himself as a midwife to bring to light that which hides within the soul of Theaetetus. I put forward that the image should not be attributed to Socrates outside of the dialogue; it is not mentioned by Plato outside of the Theaetetus due to the essential role it plays in advancing the maieutic, or Socratic method, with Theaetetus, and it is not a cohesive image. Ultimately, the inconclusive ending of the dialogue is due to a move by Socrates to analyze the truth or falsity of ideas coming from somebodies’ soul, instead of their appeal in the first place, but it does not disprove Socrates’ knowledge and wisdom of soul. The midwife image is ultimately successful in showing the influences that brought Theaetetus to wonder about Sophistry and knowledge in the first place, that he is not susceptible to the Socratic maieutic, and serves as a vessel for Socrates to try to solve his own curiosity, even if the result is inconclusive

To Tweet or Not to Tweet, That is the Question … Or is it: The Case of Emily Drabinski

Emily Drabinski found herself embroiled in scandal after securing her position as American Library Association (ALA) president and celebrating with a tweet identifying herself as a “Marxist lesbian.” Many state library commissions throughout the United States decided to cut ties with the Association, citing Drabinski’s identity as their reasoning for doing so. The discussion surrounding Drabinski grew into a larger argument about queerness and socialism in America’s libraries, with Drabinski as the rather unfortunate scapegoat of the issue. Her brief presidency and the backlash it inspired offers us a glimpse into decision-making as leaders of organizations that represent a multitude of different perspectives and opinions. How was Drabinski able to move forward as ALA president amidst constant opposition? Are we able to stand by our values and identities, even when some of our constituents are vehemently opposed to them
