Reprezentacja różnych aktorów społecznych w komentarzach pod artykułami w niemieckich gazetach
The article discusses how different social actors are represented in discourse related to immigration and refugees. The main focus is on the comments to the German newspaper articles in the context of the meeting of right-wing politicians and extremists, such as the members of the German Alternative für Deutschland party; during that meeting, the participants discussed controversial immigration policies. Comments posted under the articles covering this meeting and its outcomes are analysed using tools provided by Critical Discourse Analysis. This method shows that both the AfD party and migrants are passivated (migrants more than AfD), with AfD being presented as a victim of circumstances, while migrants are mostly treated as objects in most of the comments. Most blame for the situation seems to be directed towards “the democratic opposition”.Artykuł omawia sposób, w jaki różni aktorzy społeczni są reprezentowani w dyskursie związanym z imigracją i uchodźcami.
The article presents the most characteristic and recurring pronunci-ation problems of Polish learners of English at the suprasegmental level of the language (all aspects above the individual phoneme), which not only reveal a non-native accent, but also frequently lead to misun-derstandings. Apart from presenting and discussing these problems, their possible causes are considered as well as practical solutions to minimalize their impact. Overall, Polish learners “overpronounce” i.e. they give equal stress to most words in a sentence; they do not reduce the vowels in unstressed syllables thus losing the regular rhythm of an utterance, which is crucial for English. They also fail to link words together using the available devices (even though the Polish devices are almost identical), because of which they sound unnaturally “stac-cato-like”. Additionally, Polish learners tend not to use sufficient eli-sion (dropping sounds, a phenomenon which also exists in Polish) and assimilation (which, when used, is lifted from Polish and easily visible in the case of incorrect voicing – final devoicing and mid-word voicing). Word stress placement, especially with “cognates”, duration of articu-lation and use of English articulatory settings are also problematic areas. Surprisingly, this cannot be said about intonation, which does not pose substantial problems for Poles. In the conclusion, it is sug-gested that making all learners of English (not only Polish ones) aware of common prosodic mistakes (L1 transfer mainly) and consistent work on dealing with them, will improve their pronunciation, thus making communication in English more effective in today’s globalised world.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld witches as liminal beings
This article presents the characters of witches in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Witches are a part of the Western civilisation and are popularly connected with evil and harm they can cause to people. In this article I argue that Terry Pratchett depicts witches as liminal beings in his Discworld series. I also identify the most important qualities of these literary characters. This article presents the characters of witches in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. The child and the natural world: Anna Barbauld’s Hymns in Prose for Children
Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743–1825) is one of the eighteenth century authors of religious hymns for children, a hymn variant initiated by Isaac Watts early in the same century. Nature, as the most important spatial and thematic motif in Barbauld’s prose hymns, serves to reveal the omnipresence and power of God to the child. The didactic hymns are addressed to the “rational child”; however, the child’s unity with nature and openness to metaphysics look forward to Romanticism.Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743–1825) is one of the eighteenth century authors of religious hymns for children, a hymn variant initiated by Isaac Watts early in the same century. Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743–1825) is one of the eighteenth century authors of religious hymns for children, a hymn variant initiated by Isaac Watts early in the same century. Singing One’s Life: Biopics of Edith Piaf and Dalida
This article compares two films about French singing stars: La Môme (La Vie en Rose, 2007), directed by Olivier Dahan and Dalida (2016), directed by Lisa Azuelos, respectively about Edith Piaf and Dalida. It argues that Dahan in La Vie en Rose attempted to make a feminist biopic, which recognises that a famous woman can live mostly for her art or even equate her life with her art. This does not necessarily mean that such a woman, Piaf in this case, is unable to love passionately, but rather that there is no competition between her romantic and professional personas. Piaf’s talent for singing is also presented as a protection against external tragedies and as a source of meaning in her life. By contrast, Azuelos, in a more traditional fashion, plays up the contrast between the successful professional life of Dalida and her unhappy personal life, suggesting that if Dalida chose a different profession, she could be happier. This article compares two films about French singing stars: La Môme (La Vie en Rose, 2007), directed by Olivier Dahan and Dalida (2016), directed by Lisa Azuelos, respectively about Edith Piaf and Dalida. Biopics of Female Hollywood Stars Speak to #MeToo Era: The Case of Judy (2019) and Blonde (2022)
This article analyzes two recent biopics, Judy (2019, Rupert Goold) and Blonde (2022, Andrew Dominik), which reimagine the icons from the Hollywood Golden Era, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe respectively, under the prism of the #MeToo movement. By examining the way in which these movies treat abusive experiences within the film industry, along with their placement in the public arena, this paper exposes how contemporary biopics dedicated to female movie stars face the consequences of #MeToo in Hollywood.
In terms of textual construction, both movies presumptively adopt a female perspective in portraying actresses’ experiences of exploitation –such as sexual harassment, eating disorders, substance abuse, and more– under a male-dominated Hollywood studio system. Meanwhile, directors’ articulated intentions, promotional campaigns, reviews, and film critiques seeking to convincingly place the films in the domain of public discussion around #MeToo.
Despite this ‘feminist’ assumption, this article will argue that these movies, while appearing to confront and re-address injustices in Hollywood through revisiting the mythical narratives of well-known female stars, fail to challenge the melodramatic victimization plot familiar in traditional biopics about women. In doing so, it will explore how they reinforce a representation of the female Hollywood star after #MeToo as a mentally troubled woman struggling to survive in an exploitative film industry. “If two people say you are drunk, you better go to bed”: Interview with Gyula Gyulyás
This article explores bio documentary cinema, an often overlooked biographic genre that, unlike its “big brother,” the biopic focusing on the lives, achievements, and legacy of people from the past, prefers to investigate living people through interviews and other forms of interaction. In order to understand the challenges, methods and human dynamic shaping talking heads documentaries, the article prioritizes the first-hand experience of the filmmaker, more specifically, that of Gyula Gulyás, a Hungarian director of documentaries for over five decades. After a general introduction to his career path, preferred topics and shared interests with local and regional documentary filmmakers, the interview covers areas relevant to the biographic documentary such as generic labels, professional standards and the usefulness of cinematic portraits for academic research, choice of subject, methods of interviewing and structuring recorded material, moral responsibility and intimacy as a well as general and specific questions about financing and distributing biographic documentaries, their reception, and the struggle with political and non-political censorship. This article explores bio documentary cinema, an often overlooked biographic genre that, unlike its “big brother,” the biopic focusing on the lives, achievements, and legacy of people from the past, prefers to investigate living people through interviews and other forms of interaction. Językowo-komunikacyjne aspekty trudności szkolnych dzieci z mutyzmem wybiórczym
Verbal communication is a fundamental skill that not only facilitates the acquisition of knowledge, but also supports the student's social, emotional and educational development. Children with selective mutism have the ability to communicate verbally but avoid doing so in certain situations, most often those involving pressure to speak. As a result of these problems, they often experience school difficulties in various aspects, and achieve lower educational results than their knowledge and skills would allow.
The inability to speak in certain circumstances belongs to the spectrum of anxiety disorders. The onset of selective mutism symptoms in early childhood can impair further development and adversely affect a child's educational achievement. This text discusses the nature of the child's language and communication difficulties that may result from mutism. The specifics of the school difficulties of a child with selective mutism are characterised, particularly in terms of activities involving, but not limited to, the need to use verbal communication. The need for multi-method support for students with mutism in educational settings was emphasised, as they have difficulty participating fully and actively in the educational process.
Attention was drawn to the need to adapt the school environment and educational approach. It was emphasised that speech therapy, behavioural therapy and psychological support within the school setting can help to develop communication and anxiety management skills in children with mutism.
Niemożność mówienia w pewnych okolicznościach należy do spektrum zaburzeń lękowych.
Podkreślono, iż terapia logopedyczna, terapia behawioralna i wsparcie psychologiczne na terenie szkoły mogą pomóc w rozwijaniu umiejętności komunikacyjnych i radzenia sobie z lękiem u dzieci z mutyzmem
Psychospołeczne wsparcie i zdrowie psychiczne dzieci oraz młodzieży niesłyszących i niedosłyszących: przegląd literatury
This review article discusses research on psychosocial challenges, supports, and resilience development in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children. The inclusion of DHH children in mainstream schools, as well as the specific needs of parents and teachers, have been extensively studied in terms of their impact on children's well-being. Key research on the role of optimism, beliefs about overcoming difficulties and communication factors in developing adaptive skills is also presented. The results indicate that DHH children experience more psychosocial problems, but appropriate support, including adaptations of programs such as RESCUR, can positively impact their quality of life and the development of resilience. The article also presents the limitations of current research and directions for future scientific research.W niniejszym artykule przeglądowym omówiono badania dotyczące psychospołecznych wyzwań, wsparcia oraz rozwoju rezyliencji u dzieci niesłyszących i niedosłyszących (DHH).
