Interrogating the Algerian Folkloric Identity in Khadra’s What the Day Owes the Night
This paper is an attempt to explore Folkloric material in Yasmina Khadra’s What the Day Owes the Night, to reconsider folklore, not as a remnant of the past, but as an artistic vehicle to locate cultural belonging. It examines the different elements by which folklore shapes individual and collective identity in colonial Algerian literature. The novel of Yasmina Khadra represents material and spiritual folk constituents of the Algerian national and cultural identity during the French colonization, mainly the moral struggle of the protagonist between his Algerian cultural heritage and the French-acquired culture. The novel is rich in cultural, artistic, and folkloric elements of the Algerian individual and collective identity. It also exhibits the contrast between the local, and everyday French habits, causing a chasm between the two cultures the protagonist is struggling to bear and fill. This research indicates that the protagonist’s internal conflict reflects the larger struggle that nearly all Algerians went through during French colonization by imposing the colonial culture on their own. Research findings demonstrate that folklore is a popular material that springs out from recurrent situations of everyday life. Khadra’s What the Day Owes the Night expresses verbal art as academic parlance to encounter identity issues. Khadra effectively captures the essence of Algerian society and its diverse cultural fabric through vivid descriptions and storytelling, shedding light on the intricate nature of identity in a colonized nation
Ireland and Juvenal ii 160
Like any authority, A. E. Housman’s edition of the Roman satirist Juvenal remains a source for research, including notes in The Housman Society Journal on Rutupiae in the fourth satire or ‘Thule’ in the fifteenth. The former is Richborough, Kent; the latter seems to be Iceland, for ‘Thule’ is apparently a corruption of Greek Thymele ‘altar-slab’. It implies that the explorer Pytheas discovered Iceland in about 306 BCE, the island’s volcanoes and block-like appearance reminding him of fire on an altar. If so, it shows how perception of landscape supports emendation
China- India Border Crisis: Causes and Implications 1962-2023
For more than seventy years, the Sino-Indo border crisis has become an endless imbroglio with no settlement in sight. Relations between the two Asian giants have soured over the last decade, particularly following a 2020 boundary skirmish between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galwan area. The issue of a disputed border emerged in the early 1950s when the People’s Republic of China affected her capture of Tibet. This act created for China and India one of the lengthiest undefined boundaries in the globe. The China-India border stretches for approximately 3,488 kilometers (2,167 miles) across the Himalayan mountain range, separating the two countries. The main areas of contention are the western sector (Aksai Chin region administered by China but claimed by India) and the eastern sector (Arunachal Pradesh region administered by India but claimed by China). This dispute has led to several military standoffs and border skirmishes between the two countries over the years. The intricate and protractedness of this border conflict made this work try to find out the causes and implications of this crisis to the Asian region and the world generally. To do this effectively, we employ secondary sources where data was collected from textbooks, diplomatic records, academic literature, newspapers, journals, magazines, and internet materials. The data collected was analyzed through documentary evidence while the contested border and territorial nationalism theory were used as the analytical tool. The work discovered that factors like unresolved border issues, historical crises, strategic concerns, ideological biases, failed diplomatic negotiations, military considerations, the Tibetan refugees crisis, Cold War dynamics, and limited communications were some of the issues that led to the border crisis between the two Asian giants. Furthermore, the work found out that the implications engendered by the China-India border crisis are severe and expansive like heavy militarization of the China-Indian border, strategic instability in Asia, India’s more assertive foreign policy, China’s global image damage, policy implications, and arms race between the two Asian giants. The work concluded that China and India should strive for a harmonious and sustainable joint boundary commission that will map and mark their boundaries as this option if meticulously and strictly followed will tremendously benefit both and all
Culinary Cartographies: Mapping Cultural Identity through Foodways in Randa Jarrar’s A Map of Home
This paper delves into the confluence of cultural identity and foodways in the diaspora, using Randa Jarrar’s A Map of Home, as its object of study. It investigates the role of food, as a vibrant site of cultural expression and exchange for the Palestinian-Egyptian protagonist and her family, who strive for charting their transnational identity across different locations and cultures. Against the background of Anita Mannur’s insights on “Culinary Fictions”, this study examines the significance of food preferences and eating habits as a tool for affirming cultural identity, negotiating belonging, and resisting hegemonic narratives of cultural authenticity and assimilation. By analyzing the significance and symbolism of food in the diaspora, this research foregrounds the complexities of cultural identity. It does so through exploring culinary practices as part of the “defence and coping mechanisms” adopted by diasporic communities to maintain a connection to their homelands while attempting to render their experience of belonging tangible and fully lived. In this sense, food acts as more than a nourishment for the body as it equally functions as a vital source of sustenance for the diasporic consciousness, contributing significantly to the preservation of cultural identity and the maintenance of connections to ancestral homelands
Exploring Algerian EFL University Instructors’ Understanding and Practices of Learning-Oriented Assessment
The quality of assessment practices in higher education profoundly influences students’ learning experiences and academic outcomes. A recent trend gaining popularity is Learning-Oriented Assessment, which tailors assessment practices to enhance student learning. This study explores Algerian EFL University teachers’ comprehension of Learning Oriented Assessment and the extent to which their practices align with it. Through an online mixed questionnaire administered to 56 EFL teachers from different Algerian universities including Batna 2 University, M’sila University, University of Constantine 1 and Eloued University, the research uncovered a range of assessment practices. While some educators embrace some principles of Learning Oriented Assessment, others adhere to conventional assessment methods. Teachers also reported significant factors influencing their assessment choices, including class size and resource constraints. Given the recent shifts, proficiency in contemporary assessment methodologies is imperative for effective teaching and learning. By exploring how EFL instructors in Algeria view assessment, their practices, and the challenges they face, this paper highlights the need for pedagogical innovation in assessment and its practical application in the context of higher education

Analysis of Public and Private Treatment Services for Substance Use Disorders in Kaduna State, Nigeria
Inappropriate use of substances, also known as substance abuse, especially among youths constitutes a problem globally. The trajectory of substance abuse exposes individuals to various health problems and disorders. To this end, the provision of treatment services is considered an important measure towards addressing the side effects of the inappropriate use of substances. Focusing on Kaduna State, Nigeria, this study analyzes public and private facilities available for individuals facing substance use disorders. The study employed quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, with the administration of questionnaires and in-depth interview guides to respondents and research participants in selected treatment facilities. Copies of questionnaires were administered to eighty-six staff while in-depth interviews were conducted on eight (8) staff of the selected treatment facilities. The study leverages Talcott Parson’s social system theory to explain the subject matter. Findings from the study revealed that the selected facilities provided evidence-based psychosocial treatment services to the victims of substance abuse. In addition to other medical services provided by public and private treatment facilities, findings revealed that public facilities provided HIV/AIDs services than private facilities. Unlike private treatment facilities, the study discovered that wraparound services (such as vocational training) are minimally provided by public facilities. Despite the importance of supportive services towards optimal rehabilitation of victims of substance abuse, the study revealed that both public and private facilities neglect such services. The study therefore recommends strong collaboration among the existing treatment facilities towards the provision of optimal skills and rehabilitation of victims of substance abuse and its associated disorders
