Geometry science has got the attention of Muslim and Arab scientists of different backgrounds and specialities. Thus, Al-kindi was the first philosopher of the Arabs who believed that man was not a philosopher without being familiar with the science of geometry. Hence, he explained that proofs are the basis of mathematics. In geometry, he wrote a treatise on spherical geometry. Hence, this opened a wide door to interest in geometry while Euclid’s books were translated and went beyond tacit knowledge from Muslim Scientists led by Nasir al- dine al –Tusi. Reconstructing Nigerianisms through Sarcasm and Irony in Selected Nigerian Slangs and Mannerisms

    Get PDF
Nigerian English, already nativized and domesticated in the socio-political culture of the country, has its distinct lexical features. The study, therefore, investigates the use of irony and sarcasm in selected Nigerian slang and mannerisms using Incongruity Theory to bring to the fore, the distinct Nigerian linguistic features, inherent in them. Neologisms, slang and Nigerianisms were purposively selected through observations in a university environment, churches and public spaces, the internet and the Nigerian music industry; only slang and neologisms that cover the major geo-political zones from socio-political, religious and educational areas are used for the analysis. The study concludes that sarcasm and irony are tools used to construct a distinct Nigerian discursive identity; with irony being used more than sarcasm. Sarcasm and irony are used to achieve intertextuality; non-Nigerians, who are not familiar with the contextual use of these Nigerianisms, might therefore be excluded from the ongoing discourse. Youths, however, also make use of these Nigerianisms to send a subtle message, correct social vices and indirectly document the socio-political events in the country. The research submits that most Nigerian lexical innovations and derivations are humorously construed through irony and sarcasm

his work examines Nigeria’s role in promoting peace and security in the Gulf of Guinea region. The regional security theory (RST), which highlights the link of interdependent relationships among states within a region, serves as the theoretical framework of the study. The objective of the research is to evaluate Nigeria’s contributions to peace and security through multilateral cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea region. The study utilizessecondary data from credible sources such as official reports, policy documents, books, diplomatic records, magazines, Newspapers, internet sources, and academic literature.Documentary evidence was used to analyze the data obtained. The data collection process follows specific criteria for relevance, reliability, and credibility. The findings reveal that Nigeria to promote peace and security in the Gulf Region, actively engages in multilateral initiatives and collaborations, such as those within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) since its establishment in 1975, the Yaoundé Architecture since 2013, and the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) since 2001. In addition, to promote peace and security Nigeria participates in joint patrols, intelligence sharing, capacity building, and collaborative efforts to address maritime security challenges. The study highlights the importance of international cooperation and partnerships in supporting Nigeria’s efforts. Consequently, the work emphasizes the significance of fostering closer collaboration among the Gulf of Guinea countries to enhance maritime security in the area. Collaboration with shipping companies, naval industry stakeholders, and port authorities is essential for sharing information, implementing best practices, and developing joint initiatives to improve security measures and promote a safe operating environment. While progress has been made, the work underscores challenges related to limited resources, capacity gaps, and memberstates coordination. It emphasizes the need for sustained commitment, cooperation, and investment in capacity building and technology to address peace and security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea. The work suggests further research to explore the effectiveness of multilateral initiatives, Nigeria’s domestic factors, non-traditional security threats, regional dynamics and cooperation, and gender and inclusivity considerations in Nigeria’s promotion of peace and security in the Gulf of Guinea

The educational sphere has experienced a progressive implementation of innovative ideas in institutions and universities, leading to a significant move towards the use of information and communication technology. Numerous universities worldwide have recently adopted Moodle as an e-learning platform due to its potential advantages. This Learning Management System was introduced into Algerian higher education last decade, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread. This article examines the effectiveness and benefits of learning via the Moodle platform for EFL teachers and students at Salhi Ahmed University Centre in Naama. To investigate this, the researchers employed a methodology involving two questionnaires: one targeting a sample of 15 EFL teachers and another for around 70 students. In addition to the platform’s popularity among educators and students, the findings reveal a general appreciation for Moodle-based learning. Nevertheless, challenges such as accessibility and the need for ongoing teacher training in assessment persist. Addressing these Moodle-related issues could enhance the quality of education, aligning the institution with global trends in digital education.&nbsp

Comparing the Effectiveness of Grammar Translation Method and Unit-Shift on Translation-accuracy of Students at Intermediate Level in EFL Contexts

    Get PDF
Translating a Source Text into a Target Language becomes inevitable in the EFL context. Though the complete equivalence of the Source Text into the Target Language is not yet possible, the translation accuracy reduces the loss of the equivalence gap between the Source Text and the Target Language. The current study aims to explain the effectiveness of two translation methods i.e., Grammar Translation Method and Unit-shift in translation accuracy of the students at intermediate level in the EFL contexts. The data for this study is collected through a field survey and teaching in the actual classroom and post-tests. This is a mixed-method study using quantitative data to support the qualitative analysis. The analysis of the data was conducted using the Quantitative Content Analysis theory by Bernard (1952) and Translation Shifts by Catford (1965). The findings of the study have revealed that unit shifts have helped increase the translation accuracy of the students at an intermediate level in the EFL contexts by 11.82% as compared to the Grammar Translation Method. This study helps find the effectiveness of unit shifts in solving the problems faced by intermediate students during the process of translation

Narrative Collusion and Allegiance Justifying: A Cultural Critical Approach to The Dictator’s Last Night Novel by Yasmina Khadra

    Get PDF
Yasmina Khadra’s novels adeptly navigate complex themes such as terrorism and revolution, employing a gripping narrative style that skillfully constructs a purposeful, creative storyline. This narrative technique is designed to accentuate the emotional dynamics and psychological transformations experienced by all participants throughout the depicted events. Commonly, Khadra interweaves a romantic subplot within his narratives, artfully blending reality with fiction. His novel, The Dictator’s Last Night, vividly recounts the confrontation faced by Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi shortly before his demise. In this portrayal, Khadra draws a subtle yet profound parallel between revolution, portrayed as a fringe act of defiance, and authority, seen as a central, dominant force. This juxtaposition reveals Khadra’s critical stance on revolutions; he views them as inherently unnatural acts that disrupt the transcendent balance of established centrism, regardless of the justification provided by their leaders. By delving into the depths of Gaddafi’s ordeal and the dispositions of the rebels, Khadra exposes the complex layers of loyalty and violent opposition, illustrating how the revolution strayed from its noble intentions towards a path marred by gruesome vengeance and malevolent retribution

Teachinggrammar in the classroom involves adopting new approaches and styles. Implementing literary texts, as an example, to enhance the learner’s grammatical competence has proved its efficacy for foreign English learners to fully understand most forms and uses of adverbs in English. In this article, the researcher attempts to explore the way teachers implement literary texts to help teach English adverbs, and how learners stimulate their literary background knowledge to understand how to accurately and contextually use adverbs. This study aims to make EFL learners aware of the use of adverbs in spoken and written English. For this purpose, a qualitative approach was adopted for this research. Discourse analysis was employed by nine students from Kasdi Merbah University to analyse some selected texts as samples from Oliver Twist’s (1992) novel. The result of the study showed that literary text can be of great help for learners to learn adverbs. Moreover, discourse analysis is potentially helpful for EFL learners to master adverbs in various contexts
