Music pedagogical conference on research and practice of music education
No full textThis report is about a music education conference with international participation in September 2024 and was hosted by the Department of Music Education at the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Celetná Street, Prague. During the three days, scientific papers were presented, and two symposia and practical papers were presented. The conference included numerous inspiring workshops, a meeting of music education didacticians, a memorial meeting about Pavel Jurkovič, and a very successful and musically well prepared accompanying programme in three evening concerts. Reconciliation as the Final Stage of Conflict Resolution
No full textThe aim of this synoptic article is to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the issue of reconciliation after open armed conflict. We shall mention the most significant concepts, theories amd authors in this field; however, the article does not and cannot cover all concepts in great detail due to restricted space. The article is divided into three parts, which consecutively answer the following three questions: what is the role of reconciliation in the process of conflict resolution and in the prevention of further conflicts? What are the definitions of reconciliation, and what are its various concepts and dimensions? What are the mechanisms that lead to reconciliation, and what are the obstacles that this process faces? The discussed literature concentrates on the role of reconciliation in violent, protracted and intractable conflicts. The article itself falls under the category of peace and conflict studies, in the field of conclict resolution and of the so-called peace psychology

The Czechoslovak Sociological Society of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences Reflected by its Periodical Zprávy (1964–69).: (Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Czech Sociological Society)
Get PDFThe Czechoslovak Sociological Society, which was founded sixty years ago in 1964, was an important player in the re-establishment of Czech (Czechoslovak) sociology in that era. The society gradually took over the academic management of the field and its international representation, commencing the application of democratic and meritocratic principles. Through its activities, it became both a pioneer and a witness of the Prague Spring. However, these efforts were ended after the violent suppression of the Prague Spring, at the latest in the early 1970s. While the history of the beginnings of the Czechoslovak Sociological Society has already been covered elsewhere, in this article, the author analyses its reflection by the internal bulletin/journal entitled Zprávy ČSSS (Reports of the CSSS), published in 1965–69. On Province and Empire in My Ántonia and One of Ours: Cather’s 1922 The Waste Land
Get PDFWilla Cather profoundly alters her attitude towards the American experiment, World War I, and the prospect of cultural pluralism in America between her 1918 My Ántonia and her 1922 One of Ours. In doing so, she addresses the issue of what kind of culture America should have: a monistic one such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson advocated or a pluralistic one. In My Ántonia, set during the period of Great Plains settlement but extending up into World War I, she presents an intact American cultural pluralism: non-English speaking European cultures continuing their positive practices absent the monarchic repression of Central European empires. Her ethnic settlements in the Great Plains practice pluralistic democracy without intervention from centralised authority, implicitly reflecting what could happen under an emerging European anti-monarchic ethos or in an America that allowed for many ways of life. In One of Ours, on the other hand, she savages the jingoism that possessed America during, and after World War I: a repression that makes the war disastrous for pluralistic democracy. The dream falters. Her wartime Nebraska becomes repressive for Germans, Czechs, and other divergent peoples. It practices conformity, a new materialism, and meaningless religion. Indeed, the death of her novel’s hero, Claude Wheeler, is not a sacrifice that enables democratic renewal but rather offers us a self-blinded hero who dies in glorious strife only as he sees it. He actually dies for a nation increasingly making itself unsafe for democracy in an army whose soldiers are massively disillusioned by the war. Thereafter, Cather writes little in a positive vein of Nebraska or the Great Plains and its various cultures but turns to earlier New World catalyst communities such as those of Quebec, the pueblos of the Southwest, and pioneer New Mexico
How Learners Perceive Inter-Disciplinary Dialogic Science Related Learning Experiences: A Mixed-Method Study
Get PDFWell-designed, dialogic, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities in science related disciplines can promote many educational goals. The difficulty lies in providing these opportunities in schools. Can out-of-school focus days fill the void? Here, we performed a mixed methods study to discover how middle school learners perceive focus days that included dialogic, interdisciplinary activities in mathematics, science, and philosophy, all around socio-scientific dilemmas. We also sought to understand the experiences’ impact on learners’ self-perceived dialogic engagement in the school classroom. We focused on (1) learners’ perceptions and recollections of the dialogic climate during the focus days; (2) the perceived contribution of the three disciplines (mathematics, science and philosophy) to the interdisciplinary focus days; and (3) the focus days’ effects on the dialogic climate in the everyday school environment. Our findings suggest that (1) learners generally considered the focus days as enjoyable and different than their everyday school experience; (2) students did not consider each discipline equally relevant to the focus days’ main topics; and (3) the effects of the focus days were localized, that is, no impact was found on the dialogic climate at school. We discuss implications for promoting interdisciplinary, dialogic science related learning in secondary schools
Modern biotechnology in school education from the perspective of foreign research
Get PDFPredložená prehľadová štúdia sa zaoberá zahraničnými výskumami v oblasti vzdelávania, ktoré skúmajú znalosti vo väzbe na prekoncepty a miskoncepty respondentov o moderných biotechnológiách. Cieľom štúdie je teda poskytnúť komplexný prehľad existujúcich zahraničných výskumov týkajúcich sa primárne poznatkov a predovšetkým prekonceptov a miskonceptov v danej oblasti. Štúdia sa zameriava na analýzu zahraničných výskumov od roku 2000 po rok 2023. Výskumy boli vyhľadávané v databázach Web of Science a Scopus na základe kľúčových pojmov/slov. Analyzuje v relevantných výskumoch sledované ciele, využité metódy, výsledky výskumov a ich odporúčania pre budúcnosť. Z výsledkov zahraničných výskumov je zrejmé, že žiaci majú minimálne znalosti o moderných biotechnológiách, navyše im chýba konceptové porozumenie biotechnológií ako celku. V závere sa štúdia sústreďuje na zhodnotenie práce s prekonceptami žiakov v súvislosťami s výsledkovou časťou prehľadovej štúdie. Poukazuje na teóriu, ktorá sa prekonceptami žiakov priamo zaoberá a v nadväznosti na ňu predkladá možný prístup, ktorý je využiteľný pri práci s prekonceptami a k náprave miskonceptov žiakov práve v prírodovednom vzdelávaní. Táto prehľadová štúdia môže slúžiť ako základ pre ďalšie výskumy alebo vývoj pedagogických stratégií zameraných na zlepšenie vyučovania biotechnológií a pochopenie prekonceptov a miskonceptov nie len u žiakov.The present review study examines foreign educational research that explores knowledge in relation to respondents’ preconceptions and misconceptions about modern biotechnology. Thus, the aim of the study is to provide a comprehensive overview of existing foreign research that focuses primarily on knowledge and, in particular, on preconceptions and misconceptions in this area. The study focuses on the analysis of foreign research from 2000 to 2023. The research was carried out in the Web of Science and Scopus databases using key words/terms. It analyses the objectives of the research, the methods used, the results of the research and its recommendations for the future. The results of the international research show that students’ knowledge ofmodern biotechnology is minimal and that they lack a conceptual understanding of biotechnology as a whole. In conclusion, the study focuses on the evaluation of students’ pre-conceptual work in the context of the results section of the review study. It highlights the theory that deals directly with students’ preconceptions and thenproposes a possible approach that can be applied to work with preconceptions and to address students’ misconceptions specifically in science education. This review study can serve as a basis for further research or the development of pedagogical strategiesaimed at improving the teaching of biotechnology and the understanding of preconceptions and misconceptions, not only among students
