Non/normative Femininity, Maternity and Sexuality: The Case of Sisters B. (1878–1922)
Get PDFThe aim of this paper is a critical interpretation of the career of sisters Josefa and Růžena Blažek (1878–1922), who became famous as the “conjoined twins” Blažek in the American and European mass entertainment industry at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Drawing from contemporary critical disability studies discourse, the analysis is aimed at the construction of the “different” body of Blažek sisters in various representations, such as newspaper accounts and photography. Throughout the essay, the process of ascribing meanings to the bodies of Blazek sisters is observed, focusing on the ways in which the “different” body could be used as metaphor figuring in the debates about the “collective body” of the Czech nation. Using the intersectional approach, the essay interrogates the interplay between the imaginations of a “different” body and the notions of “white”, non/normative femininity, maternity and sexuality at the time. The paper demonstrates the interconnectedness of certain notions of normative class-specific femininity and family life with the notion of a harmonious national community, showing the discursive context of this connection in the nationalist bio-political discourses. Finally, the double-figure of the Blažek sisters is presented as a “narrative prosthesis” pleading for national unity in the troubling context of the early 20th century national politics

Fixed in Motion: Reflexive Identity of Young Volunteers
Get PDFThis paper combines the framework of collective and reflexive volunteering with emerging adulthood theory in order to investigate volunteer work in communities as a source of reflexive identity. In the theoretical part, it looks into the concept of identity from the reflexive modernization perspective, volunteer communities, and emerging adulthood. The empirical part is based on qualitative biographical research with an emphasis on the position of sociological romanticism. It analyzes six biographical interviews with young adult volunteers and with one focus group that four of them were involved in. The outcomes indicate that volunteers in the age of emerging adulthood incline to communities and to shared identity, no matter how their life situation pushes them to reflexive behavioural patterns. After reviewing their life course as a set of important milestones, they interpret their volunteer and community experience as a biographically passing but indispensable chapter in life. Voluntary Service to the Country. Interest in Joining the Czech Active Army Reserve in Times of Crisis
Get PDFThis article focuses on the motivations of candidates for service in the Active Reserve or for completing Voluntary Military Training. In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, people’s interest in service is sharply rising. Thus, the main research objective is to shed light on the motivations for serving in the military in the context of the proximity to potential threats, for which I used the qualitative research methods of semi-structured interview analysis, participant observation, social network analysis, and secondary data. In this article, I provide an overview of the existing research and introduce concepts through which the Active Reserve Institute can be perceived, especially the concepts of responzibilization and that of reserve soldiers being transmigrants. This article is the output of a completed bachelor thesis on the topic. It contains a cross-section of this work and its findings, which show the need for new motivation categories and how the presence of potential conflict affects the perception of defense in the eyes of society.This article focuses on the motivations of candidates for service in the Active Reserve or for completing Voluntary Military Training. Climate Literacy – New or Derived Literacy?
Get PDFSlovo gramotnost ve spojení s řadou adjektiv v pedagogickém i laickém slovníku zevšednělo. Díky šetření PISA běžně využíváme termíny matematická, čtenářská, přírodovědná a finanční gramotnost. Počet těchto termínů dále narůstá (viz např. environmentální, digitální gramotnost). U většiny z nich přitom chybí konsenzus na přesném vymezení. V našem teoretickém příspěvku analyzujeme koncepty přírodovědné, environmentální a klimatické gramotnosti. Na základě této analýzy docházíme k závěru, že stávající vymezení klimatické gramotnosti nepřináší žádnou novou dimenzi, která by nebyla již zahrnuta v přírodovědné a environmentální gramotnosti. S ohledem na tuto skutečnost se domníváme, že pro školní praxi a do jisté míry i pro výzkum je vymezení tohoto pojmu nadbytečné. Domníváme se, že dobrá znalost dlouhodobě existující gramotnosti přírodovědné a environmentální umožní vyučujícím uchopit i odvozené gramotnosti, mezi nimi gramotnost klimatickou či gramotnost související s udržitelností.In conjunction with various adjectives, literacy has become commonly used in pedagogical and lay vocabulary. Thanks to the PISA survey, we use terms like mathematical, science, and financial literacy. These terms continue to grow (e.g., environmental and digital literacy). For most of them, there has yet to be a consensus on a precise definition. In our theoretical study, we analyze the concepts of science, environmental, and climate literacy. Based on this analysis, we conclude that the current definitionof climate literacy does not introduce any new dimension other than those already included in science and environmental literacy. Therefore, it is redundant for school practice and, to some extent, also for research. A good knowledge of long-standingscience and environmental literacies will enable teachers to grasp derived literacies, including climate literacy or literacy related to sustainability
