Reading and Becoming a Reader 2024
The first issue of the ninth volume of the journal Literacy, Emergent Literacy and Education is dedicated to reflections on the fifth annual conference I Read and Become a Reader 2024. The published studies address innovations in pre-service teacher education for early childhood educators, the role of digital technologies in supporting learners with specific learning difficulties, and the use of school libraries in primary education. Further contributions explore the development of music literacy through digital applications, approaches to initial reading instruction for children with visual impairments, and the integration of library pedagogy into university teacher training. This issue thus provides inspiration for educators in the areas of inclusive education, digital literacy, and reading promotion across educational levels
Support in Education and Personal Development Across Educational Levels: Between Individual Needs and Systemic Responsibility
This editorial introduces the thematic focus of the journal issue on supporting individuals in education as a multidimensional and continuous process spanning all levels of the educational system. Educational support is conceptualized not merely as a response to individual difficulties, but as an integral component of high-quality education that fosters personal development, academic success, wellbeing, and social participation. The contributions in this issue collectively demonstrate that effective support requires coordination between systemic structures, institutional frameworks, and individualized approaches.
The issue presents historical, empirical, review, and methodological studies that address educational support from diverse perspectives. Topics include the historical development of counselling systems, the contemporary transformation of university counselling services, the role of academic self-efficacy in students with psychological or chronic health difficulties, the relationship between health literacy and preventive attitudes, the integration of support-oriented courses into higher education curricula, and the use of mobile technologies to enhance early reading literacy. Across these contributions, educational support emerges as a dynamic interplay between individual needs and systemic responsibility.
The collected studies highlight the importance of preventive, interdisciplinary, and institutionally embedded approaches that strengthen student competencies, resilience, and autonomy. Together, they underline that educational institutions play a crucial role not only in delivering knowledge but also in creating supportive environments that enable individuals to realize their potential across educational trajectories. This editorial introduces the thematic focus of the journal issue on supporting individuals in education as a multidimensional and continuous process spanning all levels of the educational system. The Urban Quilombo of Cracolândia
This text offers a political reading of the Cracolândia neighborhood in São Paulo, Brazil. As one of the largest areas of drug trafficking and consumption in the world, this urban area is marked by immense violence, driven by the state’s actions against it and then daily incorporated within it. The aim is to contextualize this violence within the broader dynamics of governance in the Brazilian state, particularly through the lens of race. Following the insights of anthropologist Amanda Amparo, this paper proposes expanding the concept of Cracolândia as an Urban Quilombo: a technique through which a Black population seeks to escape the death policies imposed by a racist power structure. Compared with Amparo’s work, this article emphasizes the political – both practical and symbolic – importance of Cracolândia’s spatial location, not in a peripheral area or favela, but in the very heart of the city. This text offers a political reading of the Cracolândia neighborhoodin São Paulo, Brazil. Ho Chi Minh City 2000 to 2050: An Annotated Illustration of Social Transformation
This innovative visual essay, consisting of six hand-drawn line illustrations and annotations, illustrates half a century of urban development in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city and a growing mega-urban region. Starting with anthropological documentation of urban life in the year 2000, our work engages with academic literature and speculative futures to map the transformation of the city to 2050. The possibilities we present aim to provoke discussion and reflection, contributing to rethinking policy and practice solutions and reframing a Southeast Asian mega-city in future horizoning. This innovative visual essay, consisting of six hand-drawn line illustrationsand annotations, illustrates half a century of urban development inHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city and a growing mega-urban region.Starting with anthropological documentation of urban life in the year 2000,our work engages with academic literature and speculative futures to map thetransformation of the city to 2050. “Non-significant” Historical Figures and the Corrective Function of Biography
In this study, I aim to present some of the methodological experiences I gained by researching the life of Kálmán Zsabka (1897–1971), Iván Szüts (1900–1973), and Kálmán Rátz (1888–1951). To start, I consider that the corrective function of biography can apply equally to the history concerning “famous historical figures” and to the stories of unknown or less-known historical agents who are stuck outside the canon. By exploring “non-significant” historical figures and exceptional normal cases, we can increase our knowledge not only of the individuals we study, but also of their environment. Thus, by fitting small (biographical) stories into the big picture, we can make a small difference in the latter
