Urban Toponyms as Linguistic Markers of “Owning” the Space
The article examines unofficial urban toponyms as markers of mental development of space and as markers of regional identity. A multidisciplinary approach to unofficial urban toponyms is suggested that combines the methods of linguistics with the methods of cultural geography on the basis of the “own-alien” opposition as an integrating parameter. The concept of vernacular region used in cultural geography and expediency of its application for onomastic studies is discussed. Vernacular regions are loaded with not only territorial, but also social and emotional sense and relate to mental maps. The identity of mental map is a sine qua non of the “own” community, and the correct usе of a toponym is a language criterion for passing the “own-alien” test. Also, the article provides a comprehensive overview of the studies concerning the notion of unofficial urbanonyms and approaches to their classification and categorization. An important feature implying that an urban object is fixed on the mental map of a local community is its ability to be a reference point in everyday city life and communication. Such objects are given unofficial names, the use of which in conversation is similar to using a code word. The author introduces a parameter of toponym markedness, which is understood similar to how it is interpreted in stylistics, namely: the unit standing out against similar ones. Marked forms include, in particular, those that cause an alogism of the utterance, cf. the expression that has become a Moscow topographical meme: на Ноге у Головы ‘on the foot by the head’, which means the place in the lobby of the metro station Китай-город, which until 1990 was called Площадь Ногина, near the sculpture in the form of a head of revolutionary activist Viktor Nogin. In the final part of the article, another class of names associated with toponyms is considered from the point of view of the “own-alien” opposition. These are katoikonyms – names of residents of a certain locality. According to the principles of substantive word formation in Russian, it is possible to produce derivatives with various suffixes, cf. In practice, the current use of these forms in the regional press, blogs and forums demonstrates that the city residents not only select the only one “correct” form (in this case смоляне), but also actively reject “incorrect” forms of the katoikonym, especially from “strangers” to the local people (journalists, politicians). The main conclusions of the article include the following. Space exploration takes place not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Unofficial toponyms serve as language markers of “owning” the space. In the study of unofficial toponymy, a multidisciplinary approach that integrates the achievements of onomastics, cultural anthropology, and cultural geography that is based on the “own-alien” opposition seems to be efficient. The unofficial name of a place is interpreted through this opposition: the knowledge and use of such names offer a criterion for establishing regional identity. In conclusion, it is emphasized that unofficial toponyms have their own life cycles, so their lexicographic fixation is very important not only for toponomastics, but also for urban and regional studies. Rusų kalbos žodžių darybos požiūriu vienodai galimi keletas priesagos derivatų, plg.: Смоленск – смоленцы, смоляне, смоляки.
The book of cultural journalism and essays, Leišmalīte (‘Latvian–Lithuanian Borderland’) (2012), by one of the most outstanding Latvian writers Imants Ziedonis (1933–2013) and his son Rimants Ziedonis (b. 1962) is dedicated to a specific Latvian region that lies at the border stretching for 600 km, named by a Latvian word leišmale (‘Latvian–Lithuanian borderland’). In Latvia, this word is much more frequently used and is more functional than its Lithuanian analogues meant to name the borderland on this side: “palatvijys”, “palatvė” (‘Lithuanian–Latvian borderland’).Inevitably, the book under analysis focuses on Lithuanians, Lithuania and diverse relationships between both ethno-linguistically kin nations of the Balts, i.e. both states. The article grounds on the classical principle of comparative literary imagology as a methodological approach to analyse an image of one country or its several elements reflected in literature, art, culture of another country. Referring to this principle, images of Lithuania and Lithuanians are explored in the book Palietuvėlė: both the images which are seen and assessed from the viewpoint of the Latvian–Lithuanian borderland region (leišmale), i.e. through the eyes of Latvian borderland inhabitants who became the “characters” of the book, and the images which are seen and assessed through the prism of the Latvian–Lithuanian borderland region, i.e. through the eyes of the authors of the book, the narrators.Attention is paid not only to the images but also to the story of their formation, functioning, dynamics of changes, their emotional or other kind of evaluation, their highly diverse contexts: historical, political, economic, commercial, cultural, administrative, even elementary domestic or criminal ones. The “communicating” variants are briefly characterised as specific instances: various situational and more stable connections of images based on the characteristic features of the Balts, their kin languages. The images of Lithuanians, Lithuania are being regularly formed in the book Palietuvėlė in the imagological manner based on comparison, when own, Latvian, realia are assessed at the background of analogous Lithuanian realia. Some stereotypical images of a Lithuanian person established in the historical-cultural memory of Latvians are being broken by substituting them with the images bearing an opposite meaning. In general, idealisation of the image of Lithuanians, Lithuania based on subjective experiences, personal imagination prevails in the book, even though there is also a mocking, critical point of view present.
Lietuviškumo apraiškos XX a. pirmos pusės latvių literatūroje: stereotipinės ir neįprastos
The article is based on the theoretical approach suggested by literary imagology, drawing an assumption that the image that is revealed in fiction of one country about the other country, the nation is not a literary value that is solely enclosed inside a text, but it rather often reflects specific historical, geographical, social, economic, cultural and other realia, too. There is a large number of literary pieces which depict the Lithuania-related topic or single Lithuanian motifs in Latvian literature of the first half of the 20th century; therefore, the article limits itself with analysis of only a part of them in the chosen aspect of imagology. Around thirty authors of the said period who wrote pieces of various genres, including both famous names, who became classics and less known authors, are discussed.
Majority of these literary pieces reveal such manifestations of Lithuanianness which can be considered as trite, stereotypical because they are repeated, obtain new semantic, emotional shades in various contexts; nevertheless, they always retain almost the same notional core. The ethnotype of a Lithuanian beggar (Latv. leišu nabags / ubags) is one of the most frequently occurring manifestations of such kind; it reflects a historical, economic situation of the second half of the 19th century – first half of the 20th century, when many people from Lithuania would go begging in Latvia. The fiction also quite frequently and highly variously displays the motif of Lithuanian neighbourhood, its geographical proximity. The motifs of “a Lithuanian cherry” (Latv. leišu ķirsis) and “a Lithuanian goose” (Latv. leišu zoss) are much rarer, though repeating in fiction works related to specific agrarian and culinary realia prevailing in Latvia at that time. An image of a disastrous “quagmire of Lithuania” (Latv. leišu muklājs) that was made popular by a composer Alfrēds Kalniņš’s (1879–1951) song based on a verse by a poet Atis Ķeniņš (1874–1961) ought to be considered as dissociated from objective realia; this image had a metaphorical meaning which was usually directly unrelated to Lithuania.
Manifestations of the topic of Lithuania which are characteristic of some exclusiveness, unusualness, even some kind of cultural exoticism in Latvian literature of that time are relatively sparse. The article analytically presents five pieces of fiction that display quite detailed portraits of atypical, unordinary characters from Lithuania. The most suggestive of them is an image of a Jewish man, named Perec, from Lithuanian province, who was educated under the influence of the religious spirit of the Torah but eventually embraced the truths of Marxism, and his milieu, created by a famous leftist writer Andrejs Kurcijs (the true name Andrejs Kuršinskis, 1884–1959) in his short story “The God of Paupers” (“Nabago dievs”, 1929).Straipsnyje remiamasi literatūrologinės imagologijos siūloma teorine prieiga, darant prielaidą, kad vienos šalies grožinėje literatūroje atsiveriantis kitos šalies, tautos vaizdas nėra vien tik tekste užsisklendžiantis literatūrinis dydis, bet dažnai atspindi ir tam tikras istorines, geografines, socialines, ekonomines, kultūrines ir panašias realijas.
Viena dažniausiai pasitaikančių tokių apraiškų buvo lietuvio elgetos (leišu nabags / ubags) etnotipas, atspindintis istorinę, ekonominę XIX a. antros pusės – XX a. pirmos pusės situaciją, kada Latvijoje elgetaudavo daug žmonių iš Lietuvos.
Fauna Šiaulių dvare XVII–XVIII a. pagal zooarcheologinius ir istorinius duomenis
Since 1589, Šiauliai became the center of Šiauliai Crown Estate, which maintained the ruler’s estate. From the 17th century onwards, Šiauliai Crown Estate was constantly entrusted to manage by loans to nobles of the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania, with its administrators changing over time (from 1678 to 1696, it belonged to King John III Sobieski). Šiauliai Crown Estate was administered by their appointed administration: an economist, vice-economist, and local officials. Officials of the manor administration were assisted by provision clerks, scribes, and other staff. The residence of the administration became Šiauliai Manor.
The first small-scale archaeological investigations in the residential estate of Šiauliai Manor were carried out in 1997 (led by Audronė Šapaitė). More extensive archaeological excavations were conducted at the manor between 2010 and 2022. During this period, a total area of 533 square meters was excavated, and 10,577 square meters were surveyed. The remains of 11 structures dating from the 17th century to the early 20th century were localized within the territory of Šiauliai Manor, and 8,286 archaeological artifacts were collected along with abundant zooarchaeological material.
In total, 1,114 fragments of zooarchaeological material dating from the 17th to the 18th centuries were collected and analyzed from archaeological cultural layers of the manor. The studied material provides an overview of the distribution of domestic (85 %) and wild (15 %) fauna in the zooarchaeological material of Šiauliai Manor. The surviving material allows insights into prevailing trends such as differences in the quantities of domestic and wild fauna, and to some extent, the presence of domestic animals in the manor, as well as the consumption of luxury goods and reflections of Western culture in Šiauliai Manor. The inventories of Šiauliai economy and the obtained statistical analysis provide an opportunity to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the daily life of the ruler’s table in Šiauliai Manor during the 17th–18th centuries and to extract the maximum information from the available/remaining data.
Per šį laikotarpį Šiaulių dvaro teritorijoje ištirtas bendras 533 m2 plotas, žvalgytas 10 577 m2 plotas, lokalizuotos 11 XVIIa.–XX a. pradžioje čia stovėjusių statinių liekanos, surinkti 8 286 archeologiniai radiniai bei gausi zooarcheologinė medžiaga.
Iš archeologinių kultūrinių dvaro sluoksnių surinkta ir ištirta 1 114 zooarcheologinės medžiagos fragmentų, datuojamų XVII–XVIII a. Tirta medžiaga pateikia bendrą naminės (85 proc.) ir laukinės (15 proc.) faunos pasiskirstymą turimoje Šiaulių dvaro zooarcheologinėje medžiagoje. Išlikusi medžiaga leidžia pažvelgti į vyravusias tendencijas – naminės ir laukinės faunos kiekių skirtumus, iš dalies – naminių gyvūnų buvimą dvare, prabangos prekių vartojimą ir vakarietiškos kultūros atspindžius Šiaulių dvare. Turimi Šiaulių ekonomijos inventoriai ir gauta statistinė analizė suteikia galimybę išsamiau pažvelgti į XVII–XVIII a. valdovo stalo dvaro Šiauliuose kasdienybę ir išgauti maksimalią informaciją, kurią suteikia turimi / išlikę duomenys
„Apibrėžtos erdvės“ literatūriniame-istoriniame Vinco Mykolaičio-Putino romano „Sukilėliai“ diskurse
The novel “The Rebels” (Sukilėliai) by Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas was written, edited and unfinished for more than a decade in a historically-ideologically complicated time (~ 1953–1967), almost until the death of the writer. Both the novel and the writing Material written around 1953–1960, which have so far not received the attention of researchers, have not only traces of Soviet-era ideology, but also imprints of authentic historical memory. Bearing in mind the importance of a certain region or specific localities in general in the reception of the uprising of 1863–1864, it is worth taking a fresh look at this aspect in “The Rebels” by Mykolaitis-Putinas, to make an assumption about the meaning of the place and its images in the concept of the novel.
The object of the article is the literary-historical discourse characterized by the memory of specific places, localities or wider territories, countries or ethnographic regions in the novel by Mykolaitis-Putinas and in the Material (additional resource). This discourse is considered to be literary, folkloric, partly also religious intertexts in the research sources, the cultural memory of the uprising characterized by images of places and regions. Methodologically, the research is based on the concept of cultural and social memory. Without bypassing the controversial reception of “The Rebels”, the literary-historical significance of the novel and its wider context is shown by examining such semantic lines as the unity of Lithuanians with Poles, the rebels’ hostility to the maskoliai, the mythologisation of the uprising, the religious narrative, etc.
The article explores culinary education in special schools (schools for girls) in Lithuania from 1918 to 1940 by investigating the network of schools, their founders, the curriculum of culinary subjects, the typical students, and the likely significance of such education. From 1918 to 1940, a network of special schools which were also referred to as castles of mistresses was established in Lithuania where, along with the training of household chores, culinary education was also practiced. This network involved lower-grade agricultural schools as well as lower- and middle-grade schools of household chores. In terms of their specialization, schools had to train agricultural specialists – or craftswomen; however, the curriculum of the culinary section as well as the aspirations of all the schools were oriented towards modernizing the household culture along with the teaching of cooking the meals conforming to the contemporary gastronomy trends. These schools were established not only by State institutions, but also as public ventures. The schools which were run by women’s associations or Catholic organizations were nearly two times more numerous than the State-run schools (at a ratio of 17 to 9).
A relatively significant share of the classes of culinary education in the general curriculum of the castles of mistresses highlights the exceptional attention to this field. The subject matter of the culinary classes was channeled in several directions which also reflected the general trends of the culinary culture of the time. The objective was the modernization, renewal and rationalization of the cooking environment, equipment, cooking accessories and crockery. Considering the still surviving relatively archaic aspects – which were still being sustained primarily in the countryside – students were gaining knowledge on laying the table, table decoration and the fundamentals of the table culture. Emphasis was being made on the integration of the science achievements in cooking, which was intended to cover the aspects of the nutrition value of the meals, proper digestion, and the inclusion of vitamins in the regular diet. Culinary education also highlighted the ideas of the use of the local produce. However, the general trends of the recipes were primarily targeting the ‘universal’ diet, and the manifestations of ‘gastro-national’ trends were more prominent in the cooking of the meals and beverages which were perceived as originally Lithuanian (these recipes were not very abundantly included in the programs). This trend was also manifested in the customs of fasting and the traditions of religious festivals.
Although the numbers of the graduates of the castles of mistresses were relatively low, however, the sheer numbers cannot serve for defining the extent of the impact of these studies. When the students would come home or gain employment as cooks, chefs or mistresses in the households of the richer population, they were inherently sharing the experience they had accrued in the course of the years of studies. Consequently, the knowledge was being actively distributed. On the other hand, schools as centers of the culinary literacy were also having an impact on the local communities in which they were established. The students were fine-tuning their culinary knowledge at school canteens, and they were also taking a wide range of orders. Thus, the local communities were getting acquainted with the more modern culinary trends which had not yet been established in the provincial areas.1918–1940 metais Lietuvoje susiformavo specialių mokyklų, dar vadintų šeimininkių pilimis, tinklas, kuriame mokant namų ruošos buvo vykdomas ir kulinarinis švietimas. Šis tinklas apėmė žemesniąsias žemės ūkio mokyklas bei žemesniąsias ir vidurines amatų-namų ruošos mokyklas. Pagal specializaciją mokyklos turėjo rengti žemės ūkio specialistes arba amatininkes. Kulinarinės dalies programoje visų mokyklų siekiai buvo orientuoti į namų ūkio kultūros modernizavimą, modernesnių, to laikotarpio gastronomines tendencijas atitinkančių patiekalų gaminimo mokymą.
Međimurje is a region in the northwest of the Republic of Croatia. Among its many peculiarities, it is characterised by specific folk lyrical solo vocal female singing, the so-called Međimurska popevka (Folk song from Međimurje). In 2013, that traditional Međimurje song was declared an intangible cultural good of the Republic of Croatia. In 2018, it was put on the list of elements on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This article presents the results of the authors’ research into the writings of the weekly Katolički list (Catholic Newspaper) (Zagreb, 1849–1945) about Međimurje singing. It can be seen from the weekly that the people of Međimurje attracted attention with their singing at all church ceremonies and on other occasions. However, with the Caecilian reform of church singing (1870–1920), which was more intense in Croatia from 1907 onwards, Međimurje singing began to be valued differently by some individuals (mainly priests). Echoes of these musical turmoils are also found in the weekly Katolički list. Although the entries of this weekly must be thoroughly supplemented with a description of the socio-political circumstances of the time, including Međimurje singing, and especially with the description of the nature of the Caecilian movement, the patriotic importance and traditional value of that folk singing in northwest Croatia can be strongly glimpsed in all the recorded texts.Medžiugorjė – regionas Kroatijos Respublikos šiaurės vakaruose. Be daugelio kitų ypatumų, šiam regionui būdingas specifinis liaudies lyrinis solinis vokalinis moterų dainavimas, vadinamasis Međimurska popevka (Medžiugorjės liaudies daina). 2013 metais ši Medžiugorjės liaudies daina buvo paskelbta nematerialia Kroatijos Respublikos kultūrine vertybe.
The concept of identity is currently one of the most frequently examined in cultural studies. Identity refers to the identification of an individual with a certain unit based on signs that he/she consciously or subconsciously accepts as his/her own. There are two main currents in identity research: primordialism (essentialist approach) and instrumentalism (constructivist approach). In today’s individualized society, there is a shift in emphasis from primordiality, i.e. from that side of identity that is given, permanent, inherited, fixed, to instrumentality, i.e. to such a basis of identity that a person chooses, creates, or selects. The research focuses on Iranian identity and its reflection in Western literature and the Iranian art of dance. Iran has an exceptional position in its region and influences global events with its policy. The question is what allowed the Persians to remain Persians for more than two and a half millennia. Persian identity is expressed mainly in spiritual power, poetry, and religion. The Persians gave the world poetry, miniatures, and carpets. From the point of view of production prosperity, all useless things. But that is how they express themselves. They gave the world what did not serve to make life easier but to make it more beautiful (Kapuściński, 2016, p. 153). The empirical part of the research is divided into two parts. In the first part of the research, the authors focus on expressing Iranian identity in their traditional and modern dance. The Persian “classic” is characterized by an expressive movement of the upper part of the body, delicate movements of the shoulders and palms, and eloquent facial expressions. The dance is very poetic and often depicts scenes from Persian poems. The second part of the research focuses on examining how Iranian identity is reflected in Western literature. The study of Iranian identity is based on Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran (2003), who is a representative of Iranian anglophone immigrants, as well as on an unintentional tetralogy of novels by Betty Mahmoody, the author of the novels Not without my Daughter (1987) and For the love of a child (1992), her daughter Mahtob, the author of My Name is Mahtob (2013), and Moody, Mahmoody’s ex-husband and Mahtob’s father, the author of Lost without my Daughter (2013). The culture of a nation is expressed in the identity of its inhabitants, and literature and the art of dance contribute to its understanding.
The article presents the Starkus (Latvian: Starks) family of farmers from the Daunorava (Latvian: Dundurmuiža, German: Donnerhof) Latvian dundurnieki community in Bertaučiai Village, Joniškis Parish, and the research sources on the subject matter. The research covers the following issues: (1) the 18th–19th century sources of family origin in memory preservation institutions, problem of the family origin and genealogy, the most well-known members of the family; (2) farms and sources of community demographics; (3) egodocuments and their specific features (photography collection, memoirs, diaries and letters) reflecting the economic, cultural, and social life of the community, reminiscences and genealogy of the family, kinship, and everyday activities. The sources used for the research are divided into the following categories: (1) documents in memory preservation institutions (documents of Daunorava Manor in the Latvian State Historical Archive, the Lithuanian State Historical Archives, and the Lithuanian State Central Archives: manor inventories from 1779–1797; census of souls from 1795–1834; farm censuses of 1846 and 1860; other documents from the first half of the 20th century); (2) egodocuments (1941–2007) of the Starkus Family: memoirs of the three generations of women – mother, daughter and granddaughter-niece; letters from Siberia (1948–1950); diaries of the secret agent, son-in-law Voldemaras Briedis (Voldemārs Briedis, 1944–1949); photographs from personal albums (from beginning of the 20th century to the 1970s, 285 pieces), with all digital copies stored in Aušros Museum in Šiauliai.
The analysis of the Starkus case enables addressing the issue of the origin of the Latvian community of Daunorava. The community began to dominate in the area in the 18th century after massive arrival of people from Rindzele and Lēne Manors owned by German barons von der Brüggen and, possibly, from Rideļi and Balklāvi Manors owned by their relatives von Hohenastenberg gen. Wigandt in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. The movement most probably occurred after the plague outbreak in 1709–1710 amid the Great Northern War, when new inhabitants settled or were resettled into the considerably depopulated countryside. The question of origin may also be partly answered by means of the genealogical method, which reveals that, in the mid-18th century, most of the dundurnieki families (the Starkus, the Kaseliūnas (Latvian: Kaseļūns), the Bulis (Latvian: Bullis), the Krūminis (Latvian: Krūmiņš), the Užtupiai (Latvian: Užtupis)) had a single ancestor. The question that remains to be answered is whether a single, but well-documented case of one family can reflect the life of the community as a whole. Although comprehensive reminiscences about individual communities are lacking, several well-documented family stories can also give insight into the micro-history of the entire dundurnieki community and identify methodological access to and problems with this type of research.Straipsnyje pristatoma Daunoravos (latv. Dundurmuiža) latvių (dundurniekų, latv. dundurnieki) bendruomenės Bertaučių kaimo (Joniškio valsčius) ūkininkų Starkų šeima ir jos tyrimų šaltiniai. Tiriami klausimai: (1) giminės kilmės XVIII–XIX a. šaltiniai atminties institucijose, jos kilmės problema ir genealogija, žinomiausi asmenys, (2) ūkiai ir bendruomenės demografijos šaltiniai, (3) egodokumentai bei jų specifika (fotorinkinys, atsiminimai, dienoraščiai ir laiškai), kuriuose atsispindi dundurniekų bendruomenės ūkinis, kultūrinis, visuomeninis gyvenimas, šeimos atmintis ir genealogija, giminystės ryšiai ir kasdieninis gyvenimas. Tyrimui panaudoti šaltiniai skirstomi į šias kategorijas: (1) atminties institucijose – Latvijos valstybės istorijos archyve, Lietuvos valstybės istorijos archyve, Lietuvos centriniame istorijos archyve – saugomi Daunoravos dvaro dokumentai (1779–1797 metų dvaro inventoriai, 1795–1834 metų sielų revizijos, 1846/60 metų ūkių surašymai ir kt. XX a. pirmos pusės dokumentai); (2) Starkų šeimos egodokumentai (trijų kartų narių (moterų – motinos, dukros ir anūkės-dukterėčios) rašyti atsiminimai (1941–2007 metai), laiškai iš Sibiro (1948–1950 metai), žvalgo Voldemaro Briedžio (žento) dienoraščiai (1944–1949 metai), asmeninių albumų fotografijos (XX a. pradžia – XX a. aštuntas dešimtmetis; 285 vienetai).
