The effect of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive on the formulation of emission reduction targets in European annual reports
This thesis looks at how the CSRD has shaped the way European companies talk about their emission reduction targets in annual reports. Using natural language processing methods like BERT text embeddings, dimensionality reduction, and word frequency analysis, the study explores whether companies’ language has changed since the CSRD came into effect. The findings show that even though the overall structure and tone of the reports have not changed much, companies are using clearer and more consistent language. Terms like 'scope 1' and 'netzero' are showing up more often, suggesting that firms are starting to bring their reporting in line with the CSRD’s focus on transparency. The classification models were able to show these shifts with moderate accuracy, which means that the changes are visible but still happening gradually. Overall, the study shows that natural language processing is a useful way to track how corporate reporting is evolving and it offers insights for policymakers and others who want to improve the quality and reliability of climate-related disclosures
Leading the way to innovation How inclusive leadership shapes knowledge hiding and sharing
Innovation is seen as important for companies in realizing competitive advantage, with
leadership playing a crucial role in fostering it. However, the relationship between inclusive
leadership and innovation remains underdeveloped. This study examines how knowledge
hiding and knowledge sharing mediate the relationship between inclusive leadership and
innovation. A quantitative survey was conducted among 188 employees, reporting their
perceptions of inclusive leadership, knowledge hiding, knowledge sharing, and innovation.
Findings indicate that inclusive leadership significantly enhances innovation. Furthermore,
both knowledge hiding and knowledge sharing partly mediate this relationship. While
knowledge hiding significantly reduces innovation, knowledge sharing shows a stronger
significant positive influence. Thus, promoting knowledge sharing may be a more effective
strategy for enhancing innovation than only focusing on reducing knowledge hiding. These
findings contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of how inclusive leadership fosters
innovation within and offer practical guidance for organizations to stimulate innovation by
enhancing inclusive climates and promoting knowledge sharin
Mastering success: how financial goals and social goals jointly affect sustained superior performance
In today’s evolving business environment, the simultaneous pursuit of financial and social
goals, known as goal hybridity, has become increasingly relevant, yet its long-term
performance implications remain underexplored. This study examines how hybrid goals affect
sustained superior performance, defined as consistently outperforming peers. Drawing on
goal setting theory and the resource-based view, this study analyses National Olympic
Committees (NOCs) from 2004 to 2024 across multiple Olympic Games to understand how
organizations balance competing objectives over time. While previous research emphasizes
both the benefits of specific, challenging goals and the risks of pursuing multiple objectives,
emerging studies highlight the need to better understand how combining financial and social
goals affects sustained superior performance. Using the Olympic Games as a unique setting,
this research investigates whether integrating specific financial and specific social goals
helps NOCs sustain superior performance. The findings indicate that hybrid goals do not
significantly affect sustained superior performance. Moreover, setting more specific financial
or social goals independently also shows no significant effect. These results suggest that
balancing financial and social goals is insufficient to ensure sustained superior performance.
This study contributes to literature on goal hybridity and performance management, offering
practical insights for policymakers, sports organizations and organizational leaders
Justice of Green Mobility. A case study on mobility justice in the Eindhoven Brainport region
The city of Eindhoven and its surrounding region have faced a multitude of challenges over the course of its history. This also includes matters of mobility and the transition towards sustainable transportation. However, little research has yet been conducted on the mobility policies in the region and their effects on equality. In an attempt to contribute to this knowledge gap, this research investigates the aforementioned topic through the theoretical lens of mobility justice. The central research question that was posed for this research is: “How does policy on sustainable mobility contribute to a just mobility system within the Eindhoven Brainport region?”.
During this research, it was found that mobility policies and mobility justice share a complex relation. Levels of equality depend on matters of availability, accessibility, human behaviour and participatory planning. Differentiations within these aspects may result in both positive and negative effects on equality. In order to achieve more just transport systems, a diverse set of sustainable transport modalities is required. Additionally, a change of current paradigms, norms and values must take place in which equality becomes a central aspect of mobility policies as opposed to the precondition it is currently considered to be
The implementation of multicultural education at secondary schools in the Netherlands
This study investigates the implementation of multicultural education in urban Dutch secondary schools, focusing on Kandinsky College in Nijmegen and Het KWC in Culemborg. Prompted by personal teaching experiences in diverse classrooms, the research addresses the persistent academic underperformance of students with migration backgrounds, lower socio-economic status and ethnic minorities, despite decades of policy aimed at equity. Drawing on Banks’ five dimensions of multicultural education, content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, equity pedagogy, and empowering school culture and social structure, this qualitative, comparative case study analyses interviews with seven teachers. Findings reveal widespread integration of multicultural principles, particularly through adapted teaching materials, classroom dialogue, cultural events, and inclusive pedagogical practices. However, challenges such as rigid curricula, limited training, and social resistance remain significant barriers. This study also found that minor differences between the schools are present. For future studies, research into teacher characteristics, student attitudes, and implementation in rural areas is suggested. By exploring practical applications and limitations, this thesis offers insights into creating more equitable and culturally responsive educational environments in the Netherlands
I’ll make a woman out of you: Cicero’s portrettering van Catilina, Clodius en Marcus Antonius
From Crisis to Continuity: The Lasting Impact of Covid-19 on Migration Securitisation in the Netherlands
This thesis examines whether migration has been securitised in Dutch political discourse throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, using securitisation theory and building on trends observed since the 2015 displacement crisis. Based on the Copenhagen School and process-oriented approach, this analysis focusses on Dutch political party manifestos across three election cycles. A Content Analysis method was used for this in order to quantify the qualitative data and track how migration discourse evolved among ten major political parties. Findings reveal that while Covid-19 did not cause a migration crisis, it reshaped the discourse surrounding it as if it had. Across the political spectrum, parties were found to have increasingly framed migration as an issue of management and control, with securitising language rising most prominently during and after the pandemic. The findings align theoretical expectations, whereby broader societal anxieties were shown to lead to a securitised migration discourse, aided by strong audience acceptance and institutionalisation. This thesis argues that this process of an unrelated crisis still securitising the migration debate, despite desecuritisation attempts, is indicative of a shifted baseline, where exceptional framing has become the new norm in Dutch political language on migration and something to note during future crises

Theatre and play for refugee children: stimulation of resilience through the creative projects of Changing Stories Foundation
This thesis presents a qualitative study addressing how the creative, play-based interventions of Changing Stories Foundation (CSF) may contribute to the resilience of refugee children. The study focuses on four key principles CSF maintains in their approach: play, imagination, agency and belonging. These principles were conceptualized and operationalized through a review of the literature on positive psychology and on theatre- and play-based interventions. The data for this study was gathered from documents concerning CSF’s methods, interviews and evaluations with CSF team members and partner organizations, and observations during team activities and project sessions with children. The analysis examined how CSF’s methods aligned with the relevant aspects of the key concepts selected through the theoretical frameworks. The results of this analysis were confronted with children's observed responses during projects, to review their practical implications. Findings suggest that CSF’s short-term creative projects effectively stimulate the targeted principles in various ways. Through playful activities that were offered expressions of imagination, agency and belonging emerged in children’s individual and group play. These results highlight the potential of these projects to make a meaningful contribution to resilience-building in refugee children, especially in contexts where access to long-term support is limited.
