Rhythm Changes: A Cultural Study of Ownership in Jazz

    No full text
Exploring how jazz was and is commodified in the first decades of the “modern jazz” era and the current era of conglomerate ownership, Rhythm Changes: A Cultural Study of Ownership in Jazz departs from the premise that the influence of record companies on the history and development of jazz has largely been neglected in most literature on the topic. Through examinations of the major stylistic changes in the music, the ways in which the music is brought to market, developments in cultural production, and the operations of two significant jazz labels, it is argued that conglomeration in the entertainment industry paved the way for the emancipation of various forms of popular music, including jazz. This in turn has led to a shift in focus and an expansion of the scale on which jazz is commodified. These developments are traced and analyzed in two case studies, each focusing on the particular commodification practices of two of the most prominent jazz labels of the time: Impulse Records and Blue Note Records (both now owned by Universal). Coinciding with a trend in American business of pursuing diversification strategies, as well as the emancipation of popular music in the second half of the 1960s, record companies’ views on jazz recording projects began to change. Rather than simply meant to document the music, jazz recording sessions are seen as unique artistic events that merit the listener’s undivided attention ever since. As a result, the one-size-fits-all aesthetics of the classic Blue Note and Impulse products were eventually discontinued in favor aesthetics that emphasize the singular importance of these commodities

Trouble at the Border?: How 9/11 Policy Changes Continue to Impact US- Canada Border Relations While the Border is Faced with New Challenges

    No full text
The United States and Canada share a long history of cooperation and dependency on each other in regards to trade, prosperity and security, which has created a unique relationship between the two nations. In the center of US-Canada relations is their shared border, a complex area, which is directly connected to many aspects of their relations including trade, national security and immigration. After 9/11 a drastic overhauling of policies regarding the border took place, mostly motivated by Washington’s fear of terrorism, which has continued to affect the border negatively, especially trade relations. Within the scope of my thesis I will examine how the change in policies after 9/11 has changed US-Canada border relations and lead to what many scholars refer to as a thickening of the border. Further I will explore potential solutions towards an improved well-functioning border, which allow for a smooth flow of goods and people while keeping the border secure from terrorism and illegal border crossings

Anglizismen als deutsche Partikelverben. Zur Integration von englischen Fremdwörtern wie „downloaden“ im Deutschen.

    No full text

Functional Parcellation of the Human Entorhinal Cortex

    No full text
The entorhinal cortex (EC) is the interface between the hippocampus and the neocortex. Since the discovery of grid cells in the rodent media! EC, it has been recoguized as a crucial hub for spatial coding and uavigation in rodents. Traditioually, the EC has been subdivided into a media! (MEC) and a lateral (LEC) portion. Postmortem comparative anatomical evidence, however, suggests broader subdivisions amoug rodeuts, non-human primates and humans. Cytoarchitectonically, up to uine subdivisions of the human EC have been distinguished. Several cytoarchitectonic features also suggest a rnodular arrangement, such as periodic bundliug of pyramidal cell dendrites and axons. Furthennore, tract tracing studies in rodents and non-human primates suggest a wide range of projections along the EC, with media! portions of the EC projecting to the tempora! portion of the hippocampus, while lateral and cauda! portions connected to the septal hippocampus. Differential connectivity pattern of EC subregious could thus lead to distinct intrinsic signa! fluctuations, visible to functioual magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at high spatial resolution. However, kuowledge about the fine-graine<l, in-vivo fMRI-based parcellation of the EC has been scarce. Here, we aimed to parcellate the human EC based on its intrinsic signa! fluctuations during a virtual navigation task combined with high-resolution, submillimetre flv1RI at 7T. We generated a functional parcellation of the EC by leveragiug a navel instantaneous correlation analysis approach, termed iustantaneous connectivity parcellation (ICP). The resultiug parcellations showed strong correspondence to topographies fom postmortem cytoarchitectouic studies. These findings allow us to test cormectivity fingerprints of human EC subregions in-vivo and could open up the possibility to iuvestigate neural mechanisms of spatial cognition at an unprecedented level of detail

Bridging the Gap: Visualising Socio-Economic and Technical Data for Positive Energy Districts

    No full text
The Dutch energy transition faces significant structural challenges in transforming residential infrastructure, where the implementation of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) often stagnates due to a critical disconnect between technical planning and socio-economic reality. This master's thesis addresses this gap through a case study of Hengstdal, Nijmegen, a neighbourhood where a previous collective heat network project failed due to resident resistance regarding costs and a lack of transparency rather than technical grounds. The research evaluates the extent to which a Planning Support System (PSS) that visually integrates technical and socio-economic data can improve decision-making. Using a methodology consisting of a pre-scan, tool design, and post-assessment with stakeholders from the Municipality of Nijmegen, Woonwaarts, Alliander, and the Buurtwarmtecoöperatie Hengstdal, a proof-of-concept bivariate choropleth map was developed at the postcode 6-level. By merging technical indicators like gas consumption with socio-economic proxies such as WOZ-values into a single visual matrix, the tool enables stakeholders to identify new correlations, target energy-vulnerable households, and strategically "cherry-pick" areas for intervention. The study concludes that visual integration serves as a powerful catalyst for decision-making by enriching technical data with social context. However, effectiveness remains dependent on context; the tool must function as a diagnostic "conversation starter" that respects local privacy and trust rather than being used as a commercial sales instrument

Tariq Ramadan in Rotterdam: neoliberale integratiepolitiek door middel van burgerschap en eigen verantwoordelijkheid

    No full text

“Energy Governance: Evaluating the effectiveness of Energy boards in Provincial Energy Policy. Mitigating Grid congestion through Collaborative Governance and Policy Integration A Case Study of the Energieraad Zeeland”

    No full text
This research assesses the effectiveness of Energy Boards as a collaborative governance approach to mitigate grid congestion in the Netherlands. The expansion of the grid faces long lead times due to complex permitting processes. In response, the Dutch government launched the National Action Program on Grid Congestion, which established provincial Energy Boards. These boards bring together grid operators, industry, multiple government levels, and other stakeholders to support strategic coordination aimed at faster infrastructure development, better use of existing capacity, and more coordinated planning. This study applies a qualitative single case study of the Energy Board Zeeland, grounded in a constructivist approach. Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and participatory observation. The frameworks of Collaborative Governance (Emerson et al., 2011) and Policy Integration (Candel, 2019) were used to assess effectiveness, defined as the combined outcomes, functioning, and policy integration potential of the collaboration. Findings show that outcomes mainly focus on preventing delays through early bottleneck identification and coordination. Improved infrastructure utilization led to the creation of the Zeeuwse Netoplossingen taskforce and flexible industrial contracts, though regulatory barriers remain. Coordination improved through iterative provincial energy programs. Overall, Energy Boards are largely effective, but further comparative and longitudinal research is needed

“First and last mile travel in rural Gelderland: Re-search on influence of spatial planning regarding the first and last mile trips for public transport in rural Gelderland: A case study on the region Rivierenland”

    No full text
Rural areas tend to get less public transport services than urban areas. Because of the lack of services, inhabitants of rural areas, that do not have a car, tend to have less accessibility therefore leading to accessibility inequality. Literature has shown that improving the first and last mile can solve transport inequality issues. To solve this problem, it is analysed how spatial planning/planners affect(s) first and last mile trips of people that use public transport in rural areas. This will be done via a case study about the Dutch region Rivierenland located in the province of Gelderland. This research explains that the region Rivierenland provides a good variety of transport options. The car is the most dominant transport mode, and the bike is the most used transport mode for the first mile. This research also explains that spatial planners in Rivierenland have more influence on design measures. This research also explains that due to the self-sufficient characteristics of the traveler in Rivierenland, planners have a harder time implementing new public transport improvements. Research shows that the amount of influence a planner can have on the built environment greatly depends on their function and the ability to gather funding for projects

Farming without a future: a study of land access for agroecological farmers within sustainable land tenure arrangements in Noord-Brabant

    No full text
This thesis explores land tenure arrangements in the province of Noord-Brabant, and subsequently analyzes how these arrangements (do not) facilitate agroecological farmers who seek land. Using an instrumental case study design, this thesis investigates how agroecological principles for land tenure, developed by AE farmer collective ‘Toekomstboeren’, align or misalign with sustainable tenure models employed by public lessors in the province of Noord-Brabant. Then, the Policy Arrangement Approach (PAA) is used as an analytical-explanatory framework to examine how the interplay of actors, rules, resources, and discourses shape this (mis)alignment. While the results are context-specific to the province of Brabant, and thus limited in generalizability, the PAA analysis indicated that the misalignments are rooted in a ‘productivist path dependency’, characterized by the discourse that land is a financial asset. The thesis concludes with three key take-aways. First, the agroecological movement should prioritize public recognition and legitimacy before seeking institutionalisation into public tenure policy. Second, the limits of tenure reform as a policy instrument within a capitalist agrarian structure should be recognized. Third, overcoming path dependency in the context of (agricultural) land governance requires that transformational actors (agroecology advocates) mobilize their agency to either alter or introduce new discourses, and possibly form new coalitions

THE IMPACT OF AI ON STRATEGIC DECISIONMAKING IN CRISIS MANAGEMENT

    No full text
This research investigates the extent to which Artificial Intelligence supports human-based strategic decision-making during supply chain crises. In recent years, supply chains have been increasingly disrupted by geopolitical tensions, pandemics and material shortages. While AI is often positioned as a solution for predictive analytics and scenario planning, little is known about how human decision-makers interact with these tools under pressure. The objective of this study is to explore how AI-generated insights are interpreted, trusted and applied by professionals in crisis contexts. A qualitative research design was adopted, based on eight-semi-structured expert interviews with professionals in supply chain management, AI development and procurement. The Gioia methodology was used to code and analyse the data. Findings indicate that AI plays a supportive rather than an autonomous role. AI enables faster data processing, early risk prediction and improved scenario generation. However, final decisions remain with human actors. Adoption is limited by data scarcity, trust issues and lack of strategic integration. This study contributes to theory by clarifying the boundaries of AI’s decision-support role and highlights the importance of human oversight, organizational readiness and ethical awareness. It provides practical recommendations for integrating AI responsibly into strategic supply chains under uncertainty
