Inzicht in het recyclegedrag van studenten

    No full text
This thesis examines how individual and contextual factors influence deposit recycling behavior among students in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study explores how attitudes, social norms, perceived control, and situational barriers shape recycling actions. A mixed-methods approach was used: survey data (n = 75) and two semi-structured interviews. The survey measured attitudes, moral norms, social influence, ease of recycling, and barriers like distance to return points and machine malfunctions. Despite generally positive recycling attitudes, many students did not recycle consistently, illustrating a value-action gap. Logistic regression revealed few significant predictors of behavior, and interaction effects between attitudes and context (e.g., distance) were weak. Interviews highlighted reasons such as lack of time, motivation, or a mismatch with personal views on sustainability. This study contributes to the limited literature on the Dutch deposit system among students. While the sample size restricts generalizability, findings suggest that improving infrastructure and communication may help translate intentions into action. Future research should include larger samples and explore interventions to reduce psychological and logistical barriers

Integrale samenwerking binnen het Nederlandse waterbeleid

    No full text

Navigating Masculinity and Ethnicity: Identity Work among Surinamese-Dutch and Antillean-Dutch Immigrant Men Entrepreneurs in the Netherlands

    No full text
This thesis explores how Surinamese-Dutch and Antillean-Dutch immigrant men entrepreneurs navigate their entrepreneurial identities at the intersection of masculinity, ethnicity and immigration background within the Dutch context. Using frameworks like entrepreneurial identity work, compensatory identity work, and hegemonic masculinity, this thesis analyses the identity constructions in their business practices, while the focus on Caribbean-Dutch entrepreneurs contributes to greater understanding of legitimacy-gaining practices by minority entrepreneurs. The qualitative, exploratory study is based on thirteen in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs of Surinamese and Antillean descent. The findings suggest that traditionally feminine entrepreneurial traits are regarded as more influential than stereotypical masculine behaviours. Furthermore, the entrepreneurs’ ethnic and migration backgrounds inform socially driven entrepreneurial orientation. Authenticity, moreover, emerged as a central value among participants; however, dominant societal norms occasionally compel some entrepreneurs to engage in compensatory identity work to attain legitimac

    No full text

The role of organizational structure on individual job crafting through the job-demands resource model

    No full text
Job crafting, defined as employee’s ability to shape their tasks, relationships and perceptions of their work has gained interest in the literature and in organizations. Although job crafting behavior has been linked to Job Demands and Resources (JD-R) model, and JD-R to organizational structure, research connecting structure to job crafting, mediated by JD-R is lacking. This study addresses the gap by examining how structural parameters shape job demands and resources and how these, in turn, affect employee job crafting behavior. A mixed-method approach is used to examine this relationship at two secondary schools in The Netherlands that differ in their structure. The results show one full mediation between structure, autonomy and avoidance job crafting, indicating that structure indirectly shapes avoidance job crafting behaviors through its influence on autonomy. Employees working in a higher parameter structure report lower levels of autonomy and are likely to engage in avoidance job crafting. Therefore, structure indirectly shapes individual job crafting behavior by influencing the work desig

Beyond Lexical Access: Investigating Word-Form Retrieval Difficulties in Disfluency Production

    No full text
This retrospective descriptive study examined the relationship between word-form retrieval difficulties and speech disfluencies in typically aging older adults, using the Transmission Deficit Hypothesis. Twenty-five Dutch-speaking adults aged 60 to 73 completed a connected speech task in which lexical frequency (high vs. low) was manipulated. Disfluencies during picture naming were annotated and analyzed using mixed-effects models. Lexical frequency did not significantly influence overall disfluency likelihood. However, low-frequency words were linked to more semantic paraphasias and semantically related answers, and fewer additions. These results suggest that phonological encoding challenges contribute to specific disfluency types. Participants with higher vocabulary scores produced fewer semantic disfluencies, highlighting a protective role of lexical knowledge. The findings underscore the importance of differentiating disfluency types and considering task characteristics when studying language production in older adults. By isolating word-form retrieval in connected speech, this study offers a refined view of age-related disfluency patterns and discusses implications for “good-enough” language production and inhibitory control

‘‘The Dead Will Rise Here’’: Contested Cultural Memories of Bloody Sunday in the Abbey and Druid Productions of Frank McGuinness’ Carthaginians (1988/1992)

    No full text
This thesis examines Frank McGuinness’s Carthaginians (1987) as a pivotal work in Irish theatre of the Troubles, exploring its nuanced representation of trauma, memory, and identity in the aftermath of Bloody Sunday (January 30th, 1972). Set in a graveyard in Derry, the play foregrounds themes of and mourning, as it offers a distinctive perspective on how the events of Bloody Sunday shaped collective and individual experiences. A central focus of this study is the comparative analysis of two major productions of Carthaginians: the Abbey Theatre’s premiere in 1988 and the Druid Theatre’s production in 1992. Drawing on newly digitised archival materials, including recordings and reviews, this thesis highlights the interpretive differences between these stagings. The Abbey Theatre’s minimalist, sombre approach emphasised the stark emotional weight of the play, aligning with the national significance of Bloody Sunday. In contrast, the Druid Theatre’s vibrant, colourful staging brought a more localized and communal energy to the performance, reimagining the play for an audience in Derry, the site of Bloody Sunday itself. This thesis also examines The Burning Balaclava, the play-within-a-play in Carthaginians, as a satirical critique of the stereotypical and often exploitative representations of the Troubles in theatre. By using humour to subvert these tropes, McGuinness engages the audience in a self-aware reflection on the ethics of representing conflict and trauma on stage. This meta-theatrical element not only critiques dominant narratives but also underscores the play’s broader themes of healing and resilience through storytelling and performance. In the play, The Burning Balaclava is written by Dido, who is a queer character whose flamboyance and humour challenge traditional notions of masculinity and nationalism. This queer narrative will also be scrutinised, meaning this thesis investigates how McGuinness redefines the boundaries of cultural memory by incorporating marginalised voices that are often left out of stereotypical Troubles narratives. The study further utilises archival research as a methodological approach to emphasise the importance of digital archives in theatre studies, as they offer invaluable insights into stage designs, directorial choices, and audience reception. This thesis argues that such research is critical for understanding how different productions interpret and reshape a play’s themes in response to their historical and cultural contexts. The Abbey Theatre’s production, performed in Dublin, underscored the play’s national significance, while the Druid Theatre’s 4 staging in Derry emphasised its resonance within the local community, highlighting the interplay between location and performance. Ultimately, this thesis contributes to ongoing debates about the cultural memory of Bloody Sunday and the Troubles more generally, as well as the role of theatre in shaping narratives of trauma and identity. It argues that Carthaginians transcends traditional nationalist and sectarian frameworks by foregrounding personal grief and queer perspectives, offering a more multifaceted portrayal of post-conflict Northern Ireland. By integrating archival research with performance analysis, this study not only enriches the understanding of Carthaginians but also underscores the evolving methodologies in contemporary theatre scholarship. McGuinness’s work challenges audiences to confront the complexities of memory, trauma, and representation, ensuring its continued relevance in Irish theatre and beyond. Keywords: Carthaginians, Frank McGuinness, Bloody Sunday, Troubles theatre, cultural memory, archival research

Collaborative action for Sustainability: Designing Effective Core Teams at Canisius Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis Nijmegen - A qualitative study of the challenges and solution for sustainable actions

    No full text
At Canisius Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis (CWZ) and other Dutch hospitals, growing attention is given to sustainability. However, implementation of promising initiatives is obstructed by disparities between stakeholders, slowing progress. This research explores the potential of a core team to bridge that gap. It starts with an analysis of CWZ’s sustainability objectives, followed by interviews with sustainability coordinators from two other hospitals to understand their collaboration methods and challenges. Further interviews at CWZ identified persistent issues and possible solutions. A focus group with six participants then examined the most promising tasks for a core team and considered alternative approaches. Risks and preconditions for such a team were also discussed. Findings show that challenges stem not only from stakeholder collaboration, but also from low prioritisation of sustainability and unclear criteria for initiatives. A core team, consisting of managers, experts, and healthcare providers could accelerate the development of initiatives. However, limited time and prioritisation remain threats to its effectiveness. Future research should delve deeper into the social implications of collaboration among diverse stakeholders, and how these dynamics affect their roles within CWZ

Leefbaarheid Almelo.

    No full text

Are multilinguals better at learning the grammar of an additional language?

    No full text
In this two-session study, a group of adult participants with varying amounts of language-learning experience learned to use grammar related to the assignment of thematic agent and patient roles in an artificial language. The main aim was to investigate whether bi-/multilinguals had an advantage over language learners with less language-learning experience in the context of additional language grammar learning. The results revealed no evidence in support of a bilingual language learning advantage or main effect of learning conditions. Instead, the two factors interacted with each other in an unexpected way, which may be related to this study’s small sample size and/or the confounding influence of an unmeasured variable (verbal working memory capacity). Individual differences in metalinguistic awareness, on the other hand, were found to positively influence additional language grammar learning success, independent from differences in language-learning experience
