The influence of Surinamese Dutch and Standard Dutch accents on consumer evaluations in the Netherlands.
This thesis investigates the influence of accents on consumer evaluations in the Netherlands, comparing the Surinamese Dutch accent to the Standard Dutch accent. Using a verbal-guise technique, the study explored how these accents and two product types (hedonic vs. utilitarian) affected attitudes toward advertisements, products, speakers, and willingness to try the product. The moderating role of region of residence on speaker attitudes was examined, with data from 253 native Dutch-speaking participants. Results indicate that hedonic products received more positive evaluations overall. Speakers with a Standard Dutch accent were rated more favourably on speaker attitudes, but this bias did not extend to attitudes toward advertisements or products. Regional differences did not significantly affect evaluations, suggesting consistent perceptions across the Netherlands. The findings underscore the importance of contextual factors, such as product type, in shaping consumer responses to accented speech. Methodological limitations and directions for future research are discussed

Exploring the features, status, and usage of the Ernems city dialect invaried social contexts
The Ernems city dialect is an endangered languoid variety, which has barely been studied by linguists and whose status within the city of Arnhem is rather unknown. This study has
investigated the contemporary usage and status of the Ernems dialect, comparing its usage in the linguistic landscape of Arnhem city centre and the neighbourhood of Klarendal, the supposed heart of dialect usage in the city. Here, it was noted that Ernems is barely preserved in writing, even in Klarendal, with speakers also difficult to recognise. This was then compared to Ernems usage at Vitesse Arnhem football club, which showed that more active, dynamic, and noticeable dialect usage occurred within this communicative context. This highlights a unique scenario where Ernems usage is normalised, which could offer important context to future preservation strategies, as well as highlight the importance of certain identities within the Ernems speech community that link directly to Vitesse
This master’s thesis argues that increasing competition within the contemporary Dutch
festival sector, combined with a lack of structurally targeted (government) support and limited
financial resources, is a key factor behind the substantive erosion of the countercultural
ideological practice in modern music festivals. By offering a historical overview, it shows an
interlinkage of processes of commercialization, commodification, festivalization, and the
development of government policies. Three categories are introduced to demonstrate how sector competition and national cultural policies shape the ideological practices of festivals. These help to conclude that the freedom of festivals to engage in countercultural practice depends primarily on financial support from stable organizations (for 'Industry greats') or government subsidies (for 'Subsidized enterprises'). In contrast, 'Independent enterprises' face a forced erosion of countercultural elements due to a lack of financial stability and supportive policies. Consequentially, the large-scale, unchecked competition within an inherently commercial context, signals a regressive process that undermines the countercultural elements within the music festival concept

From crisis to critique How crises influence the relationship between authoritarianism and Euroscepticism in the European Union
The EU is facing crisis after crisis in today’s changing geopolitical landscape. Since the financial crisis of 2008, the European Union has been stuck in a polycrisis, constantly preparing for whatever challenges the future may bring. In response, the EU has been showing autocratic characteristics, centralizing its authority and increasing its power. Since that time, however, citizen’s opinions on the Union have become less positive. This thesis examines if there is any relation between these phenomenon, building on theory by Tillman (2013, 2021) and using authoritarianism as an explanatory factor for Euroscepticism, investigating to what extent crises influence the effect from authoritarian values on Euroscepticism. By doing three separate quantitative multilevel regression analyses, this thesis looks at the effect of identities on the relationship between authoritarianism and Euroscepticism, analyzes the effect of a single crisis on that relationship and maps the effect of the polycrisis on the relationship over time. The first analysis shows that having a strong national identity makes authoritarian citizens more Eurosceptic, but having a strong European identity does not hold any significant effect on those feelings. The second analysis shows that a single crisis may intensify the effect from authoritarianism on Euroscepticism among EU citizens. The third analysis shows that the polycrisis is likely to have strengthened this effect throughout the last decades. These findings indicate that authoritarianism is a relevant factor in explaining Euroscepticism in combination with crises, specifically in times of high political instability
United Nations Global Compact: Practice what you sign?
This thesis examines whether companies that sign the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) outperform those that do not on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) indicators aligned with the initiative’s ten principles. Using a panel dataset of firms from the S&P 500 and STOXX Europe 600 between 2019 and 2023, this analysis applies a combination of Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Two-Way Fixed Effects (TWFE), and within-firm fixed effects regressions focused on "switcher" firms, those that changed their UNGC signatory status during the period.
The OLS results show that UNGC signatories consistently outperform non-signatories on individual principles and on the overall average, indicating that firms already committed to responsible business conduct outperform those who have not. However, the TWFE models reveal that non-signatory firms improved at a faster rate over time, suggesting there is a performance convergence likely driven by external ESG pressures rather than internal commitments. The within-firm fixed effects model of switchers shows modest but significant improvements in ESG performance post-commitment, especially in human rights and labour-related principles.
Overall, the findings suggest that while a UNGC membership is associated with higher baseline ESG performance, being part of the UNGC does not guarantee accelerated improvement. These results contribute to the literature on voluntary sustainability initiatives by distinguishing between cross-sectional performance advantages and actual within-firm change
The Performativity of Sustainability Accounting Under a Reporting Mandate
Sustainability accounting is a tool that has been proposed to transform organizations towards a more sustainable way of doing business and to increase accountability for the environmental and social impact organizations have through their activities. In this context, the notion of performativity is often used. The performativity of accounting entails the concept that accounting functions as a mediating factor in translating economic theory to practice and has constitutive and transformative features. Drawing on the concept of performativity this paper will present a case study of ASR, a stock-listed Dutch insurance firm, which had to comply with the EU Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD). Through a discourse analysis of publications (2013-2023) from different actors in the case of ASR the study identifies a shift of ASR towards an economic frame with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Conditions which contributed to sustainability accounting becoming performative and indications of potential overflowing of the sustainability frame are identified as well.
