Beyond Fundamentals: The Role of Peer Influence, Salience, and Financial Literacy on Meme Stock Investing
This thesis explores why people invest in meme stocks by evaluating how peer influence, social media, and financial literacy shape these decisions. Using data from the 2021 NFCS Investor Survey, several logistic regression models were created. These models test how different factors, such as the influence of peers, the use of platforms like TikTok, Reddit, or Instagram, and how knowledgeable people feel about investing, affect meme stock participation. The results show that both peer pressure and the use of highly visual platforms play a big role in driving meme investing. Interestingly, people who rate their financial knowledge as high are not necessarily less likely to invest in meme stocks. They might even be more likely to follow others because they possibly feel more confident. The thesis also looked at indirect relationships and found that social media can increase peer effects, and financial literacy might either reduce or strengthen that effect depending on the situation. These results show that investing is increasingly influenced by what people see and feel online and not just by fundamentals. While the study gives useful insights, it is limited by the self-reported and cross-sectional nature of the data. More research is needed to follow these behaviors over time
Beyond the means? A critique of the postphenomenological account of technological mediation
This article critically examines the postphenomenological account of the normativity of technology, articulated as non-neutral “technological mediation” in opposition to the common “instrumentalist” view of technology as neutral. The first part analyses how Don Ihde and Peter-Paul Verbeek seek to move beyond Heidegger’s “essence of modern technology” through their empirical study of concrete technologies, arguing that this rejection ultimately undermines their normative aims. The second part elaborates that Heidegger’s essence of technology remains key to postphenomenology’s aims, suggesting that normative technological mediation is not an alternative to the instrumentalist view but rather the
continuous appeal of instrumentalism
The role of phonology on recognising interlingual homographs in L1 sentence context
Research on bilingualism suggests that the mental lexicon contains words from both languages and that its lexical representations can be activated simultaneously. Interlingual homograph effects, in both isolation and sentence context, in both L1 and L2, support this. Although orthographic and semantic overlap had been studied, the role of phonological overlap remained less clear. The present study therefore investigated how full phonological overlap in interlingual homographs influences bilingual word recognition in L1 sentence context. Using a self-paced reading paradigm, Dutch-English bilinguals read Dutch sentences containing an interlingual homograph or a Dutch control word. Interlingual homographs were phonologically identical or non-identical across languages. Reading times for target words and post-target words were measured. Results showed no significant difference in reading times between interlingual homographs and control words, nor between these word types across the phonologically identical and non-identical conditions. These results indicate that cross-linguistic activation may be subject to certain limitations
On the reach of Pop Song English: ABBA and the accent use of non-native speakers in 1970s pop music
‘Pop Song English’ (PSE) refers to the accent pop singers throughout the Anglosphere use in their music. This thesis expands the social and geographical area of this research field by investigating ABBA’s accent use throughout their career within a language-ideological framework. This study examines ABBA’s realisation of two PSE variables: intervocalic /t/ and non-prevocalic /r/. Realisation rates are investigated using descriptive statistics, conditional inference trees and general linear mixed effects models. Results show that intervocalic /t/ is largely produced in line with PSE norms, whereas non-prevocalic /r/ is not. Moreover, social factors only influence intervocalic /t/. Thus, ABBA do not embrace PSE fully, but do not disregard it either. This complicates the idea that PSE is all-determining. A change of concept is therefore needed. It is suggested we view pop music as a spectrum and means of indexing a pop identity, linguistic or otherwise, as ways to define ones place on it
Science, Myth, and Biopower: Rethinking Biopolitics in Contemporary India
In India, unlike the West, science and religion are not contrasted but syncretised into a mythoscientific discourse. This thesis investigates how Hindu nationalists fuse biology and myth to construct hierarchies of purity and pollution. It argues that Foucauldian biopolitics encounters deficiencies in analysing the sacralised and postcolonial regime of biopower in India as Foucault assumes a Eurocentric and secular genealogy of science and modernity, overlooking their colonial dimensions. Employing conceptual and discourse analysis, the research traces the imbrications of science, religion, and colonialism from British rule to contemporary India. Drawing on postcolonial technoscience and feminist Science and Technology Studies (STS), it develops a culturally situated theorisation of postcolonial biopolitics relevant to both Indian political discourse and broader biopolitical thought
The Effect of Colour Manipulation and Topic Involvement on Intended Behaviour Change Using Icon Arrays.
This study did research on the effects of colour manipulation in icon arrays and the level of involvement to the topic on intended behaviour change to reduce the daily added sugar intake. Participants were exposed to three icon arrays, either in the colour combination red and green or black and white, presenting the impact of added sugar intake on the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire, assessing participant’s level of involvement (low or high) and their intended behaviour change. Results showed no significant effect of the colour manipulation on intended behaviour change. However, participants with a high level of involvement to the topic were significantly more willing to reduce their daily added sugar intake than those with low involvement. These results emphasize the important role of involvement in effective health risk communication
Bovendien
